Hyderabad: The Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) has achieved 12 percent growth in coal transportation, 7 percent growth in coal production and 15 percent growth in overburden removal over the last year in the first six months of the current fiscal.

Chairman and Managing Director of the Company N Sridhar on Tuesday said although the company faced some difficulties due to rains during the first six months of the current financial year, it overcame all obstacles and achieved the required target. Stating that there would be a serious demand for coal across the country, he directed officials to produce 2.10 lakh tonnes of coal per day and transport it to achieve the annual target of 720 lakh tonnes by the end of March.

The coal transportation target for the first six months of the current fiscal was fixed at 307 lakh tonnes, but the company exceeded the target by transporting 330 lakh tonnes of coal and recorded a growth of 7 percent, he said. This was 12 percent higher than the coal shipment of 294 lakh tonnes achieved during the same period last year, he said, adding that the coal production target of 314 lakh tonnes for the first half of the year had been achieved with 100 percent target achievement.

“There is a possibility to achieve a turnover of Rs.40,000 crore and a profit of about Rs.3500 crore, if we achieve the target of 720 lakh tonnes of coal production in the current fiscal,” he said.

Mumbai:

BJP MP Pragya Thakur, one of the prime accused in the 2008 Malegaon blast case, got emotional on Tuesday while replying to questions as her statement was recorded by the special National Investigation Agency (NIA) court here.

The trial court on Tuesday started recording the statements of Ms Thakur and six other accused in the case under section 313 of the Code of Criminal Procedure under which an accused person gets an opportunity to explain circumstances appearing in the evidence against him or her.

Around 60 questions related to the testimonies of the doctors who had treated the injured and conducted autopsies after the blast in Malegaon were asked of the accused.

Ms Thakur, seated in the witness box, got visibly emotional at one point and the proceedings were halted for ten minutes.

Her response to all the questions was, “I don’t know”.

Ms Thakur, the Lok Sabha member from Bhopal, got uncomfortable when questions describing the injuries of the blast victims were put to her, her lawyers J P Mishra and Prashant Maggu told reporters later.

The recording of the testimonies of the prosecution witnesses in the case is over. Since the trial began in December 2018, as many as 323 prosecution witnesses were examined, 34 of whom turned hostile or did not support the prosecution case.

Thakur, Lt Col Prasad Purohit, Major (retired) Ramesh Upadhyay, Ajay Rahirkar, Sudhakar Chaturvedi, Sudhakar Dwivedi and Sameer Kulkarni are facing trial under the provisions of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) and Indian Penal Code (IPC).

All seven accused were present before special NIA court judge A K Lahoti for the recording of statements under section 313, which will continue on Wednesday.

Six people were killed and more than 100 injured when an explosive device strapped to a motorcycle went off near a mosque in Malegaon in north Maharashtra, about 200 km from Mumbai, on September 29, 2008.

The case was initially probed by the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) before it was transferred to the NIA in 2011.

New Delhi: The rupee depreciated 15 paise to close at 83.21 (provisional) against the US dollar on Tuesday, as a strong US dollar and weak domestic equities dented investor sentiments.

Forex traders said muted domestic macroeconomic data and sustained FII outflows also mounted downside pressure on rupee.

At the interbank foreign exchange market, the local unit opened at 83.21 against the US dollar and moved in a range of 83.23 to 83.17.

The rupee finally settled at 83.21 (provisional) against the US dollar, down 15 paise from its previous close.
On Friday, the rupee appreciated 13 paise to settle at 83.06 against the US dollar.

On Monday, the domestic forex market was closed on account of Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti.

Meanwhile, the dollar index, which gauges the greenback’s strength against a basket of six currencies, rose by 0.14 per cent to 104.05.

Brent crude futures, the global oil benchmark, declined 0.02 per cent to USD 90.69 per barrel.

“We expect the rupee to trade with a negative bias as the hawkish Fed speak and a strong dollar may continue to put downward pressure on the rupee. Risk aversion in global markets may further weigh on the domestic currency,” said Anuj Choudhary – Research Analyst at Sharekhan by BNP Paribas.

Choudhary further said that decline in crude oil prices and any selling of dollars by RBI may support rupee at lower levels.

“Traders may take cues from JOLTS job openings data from the US. Investors may remain cautious ahead of the RBI’s monetary policy meeting later this week. USDINR spot price is expected to trade in a range of Rs 82.80 to Rs 83.70,” Choudhary said.

On the domestic equity market front, the 30-share BSE Sensex closed 316.31 points or 0.48 per cent lower at 65,512.10. The broader NSE Nifty declined 109.55 points or 0.56 per cent to 19,528.75.

Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) were net sellers in the capital market on Friday as they offloaded shares worth Rs 1,685.70 crore, according to exchange data.

Manufacturing activities in India fell to a five-month low in September as new orders rose at a softer pace, which tempered production growth, a monthly survey said on Tuesday.

The seasonally adjusted S&P Global India Manufacturing Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) fell to 57.5 in September, down from 58.6 in August — the lowest in five months.

Delhi: Editors Guild ‘deeply concerned’ over raids on residences of senior ‘NewsClick’ journalists

Delhi: Editors Guild ‘deeply concerned’ over raids on residences of senior ‘NewsClick’ journalists

The raids came in connection with a case registered on August 17 under UAPA and other sections of IPC, including 153A, and 120 B

New Delhi: Voicing concern over the raids by the Special Cell of the Delhi Police on the residences of journalists linked with the online portal NewsClick, the Editors Guild of India on Tuesday said the crackdown is “yet another attempt to muzzle the media.”

Earlier, on Tuesday, Delhi Police’s Special Cell carried out raids at more than 30 locations linked with the online news portal NewsClick and its journalists. The raids came in connection with a case registered on August 17 under UAPA and other sections of IPC, including 153A (promoting enmity between two groups), and 120 B (criminal conspiracy).

Responding to the incident, the Guild, in a statement, said it was “deeply concerned” about the raids at the residences of senior journalists early this morning. “Their laptops, mobile phones and other devices have been seized. Senior journalists have been taken into custody by the Delhi Police, allegedly for ‘questioning.’ Media reports suggest that the raids have been widespread. The raids are reportedly being conducted in connection with an FIR filed under the draconian UAPA and laws relating to criminal conspiracy and disruption of communal harmony against journalists, including those associated with the website Newsclick.in,” the Guild said in a statement.

“EGI is concerned that these raids are yet another attempt to muzzle the media. While we recognise that the law must take its course if actual offences are involved, due process has to be followed. The investigation of specific offences must not create a general atmosphere of intimidation under the shadow of draconian laws, or impinge on the freedom of expression and the raising of dissenting and critical voices,” it added.

“We remind the government of the importance of an independent media in a functioning democracy and urge it to ensure that the fourth pillar is respected, nurtured and protected,” it added.

Meanwhile, according to sources, the Editor-in-Chief of NewsClick, Prabir Purkayastha and writers Paranjoy Guha Thakurta and Urmilesh were brought to the special cell offices in the national capital on Tuesday as part of the investigation.

Earlier, on August 10, a report in the New York Times had alleged that NewsClick was part of a global network that receives funding from American billionaire Neville Roy Singham.

Singham is known as a socialist benefactor of far-left causes, is at the centre of a lavishly funded influence campaign that defends China and pushes its propaganda.

Singham is also said to have close ties with the Chinese government’s media machine.
