Moscow May Annex More Ukrainian Regions: Former Russian President

Moscow May Annex More Ukrainian Regions: Former Russian President

Dmitry Medvedev is one of Moscow’s most hawkish voices in support of the Ukraine offensive

Moscow:

Russia’s former leader Dmitry Medvedev suggested Saturday that Moscow may annex more regions of Ukraine, as he marked one year since the Kremlin claimed four Ukrainian territories as its own.

Moscow held elections in the four regions this month, but does not fully control any of them and is currently battling a Ukrainian counteroffensive to take them back.

“The special military operation will continue until the complete destruction of the Nazi regime in Kyiv,” said Medvedev, who now serves as deputy chair of Russia’s Security Council.

“Victory will be ours. And there will be more new regions within Russia,” he said.

Russia uses the term “new regions” to refer to the Ukrainian territories of Donetsk, Lugansk, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson that Moscow claimed to annex last September.

President Vladimir Putin addressed the nation earlier to mark the anniversary of the annexations, calling them a historic choice by the people living there to reunite with the “Fatherland”.

Medvedev, once considered a liberal reformer, has since become one of Moscow’s most hawkish voices in support of the Ukraine offensive and often denounces the West in inflammatory posts on social media.

New Delhi:

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has chargesheeted the sole accused in the Kerala train arson case that left three persons, including a child, dead and nine injured in April, an official said on Saturday.

Sharukh alias Sharukh Saifi, who lived in the Shaheen Bagh area of New Delhi and was self-radicalised by following online propaganda of radical Islamic preachers, has been charged under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, Railways Act and Prevention of Damage to Public Property (PDPP) Act, a spokesperson of the federal agency said.

The 27-year-old is accused of committing an act of terror by setting the D1 coach of Alappuzha-Kannur Executive Express on fire on April 2.

“Sharukh, the sole accused in the gory case, had sprinkled petrol on the passengers and set the bogey on fire with a lighter with the intention to kill people,” the spokesperson said, quoting the chargesheet.

The accused had boarded the moving Alappuzha- Kannur Executive Express, committed the terror act and continued to travel in the same train till Kannur, before escaping to Ratnagiri, Maharashtra, from where he was eventually arrested, the spokesperson said.

The official said Sharukh had travelled to Kerala from New Delhi on March 31 and reached the state on April 2.

“The accused purchased petrol from a petrol bunk in Shoranur and a lighter from a nearby store at Shoranur Railway Station,” the spokesperson said.

The official said the investigations show that he had chosen Kerala for the act involving terror and arson as he wanted to commit his “jihadi” act in a location where he would not be recognised.

“He had intended to return to normal life after the commission of the act, aimed at creating terror in the minds of the general public,” the spokesperson said.

The official said the accused was self-radicalised through various online propaganda material available on social media in favour of violent extremism and “jihad”, as propagated by radical Islamic preachers of Indian and foreign nationalities.

“In this process, he followed radical and hardline Islamic preachers including those who are Pakistan-based, on social media platforms. He had committed the arson as a jihadi terror act in pursuance of the online radicalisation,” the spokesperson said.

The case was initially registered at Kozhikode Railway Police Station, Kerala, and later by the Special Investigation Team, Kerala.

On April 17, the NIA took over the investigations of the case under the direction of the Ministry of Home Affairs.

During the course of its investigations, NIA conducted searches at 10 locations in Delhi and seized digital devices. Several witnesses were questioned and CCTV footage from the Railway Station was also seized, the spokesperson said.

Arvind Kejriwal further added, “In the morning I read that somewhere in the market there was a robbery by breaking the lock. This is because the Center and the LG are venting all energy into stopping the work of Delhi. They are engaged in how to stop the work of Mohalla Clinic. I request that let us do our work, and you do your work. If you cannot handle law and order, then give it to us. We will show how to make Delhi the safest city.”

Putin marks anniversary of annexation of Ukrainian regions as drones attack overnight

Kyiv: Russian President Vladimir Putin on Saturday insisted that the residents of four Ukrainian regions that Moscow illegally annexed a year ago “made their choice — to be with their Fatherland.”

In an address released in the early hours to mark the first anniversary of the annexation, Putin insisted that it was carried out “in full accordance with international norms.”

He also claimed that residents of the Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson regions had again expressed their desire to be part of Russia in local elections earlier this month, in which Russia’s Central Election Commission said that the country’s ruling party won the most votes.

The West has denounced both the referendum votes carried out last year and the recent ballots as a sham.

The votes were held as Russian authorities attempted to tighten their grip on territories Moscow illegally annexed a year ago and still does not fully control.

A concert was held in Red Square on Friday to mark the anniversary, but Putin did not participate.

The address came after Russia’s Defense Ministry said Friday it would enlist 130,000 men for compulsory military service this fall, beginning October 1 in most regions of the country.

It announced it would for the first time begin enlisting residents of the annexed territories as part of its twice-yearly military conscription campaign.

Russia says conscripts are not deployed to what it calls its “special military operation” in Ukraine, or to serve in the annexed territories.

However, after their service, conscripts automatically become reservists, and Russia has previously deployed reservists to Ukraine.

Meanwhile, in Ukraine, the governor of Ukraine’s partly occupied southern Zaporizhzhia region, Yurii Malashko, said five people were wounded on Saturday in two missile strikes on the village of Matviivka, located on the northeastern outskirts of the regional capital, also called Zaporizhzhia.

Air defences shot down 30 out of 40 Iranian-made kamikaze drones aimed at the Odesa, Mykolaiv and Vinnytsia provinces overnight, the Ukrainian air force said Saturday.

Vinnytsia regional Gov. Serhii Borzov said that air defenses shot down 20 drones over his central Ukrainian region, but that a “powerful fire” broke out in the town of Kalynivka when a drone struck an unspecified infrastructure facility.

Romania’s Ministry of National Defence said on Saturday that a possible unauthorised entry into its national airspace occurred overnight amid the bombardment.

It said the radar surveillance system of the Romanian Army detected “a possible unauthorised entry” into the national airspace of NATO member Romania, with a signal detected toward the city of Galati, which is close to the border with Ukraine.

“At this moment, no objects have been identified that fell from the airspace onto the national territory,” the statement read, adding that NATO allies were informed in real time and that searches will continue through Saturday.

Emergency authorities issued text message alerts overnight to residents living in the counties of Galati and Tulcea, after detecting what the defence ministry said was “groups of drones heading toward Ukrainian territory” near the border.

In recent weeks, Romania has found drone fragments on its soil from the war next door at least three times as Russian forces carry out sustained attacks on Ukraine’s Danube ports.

Russia’s Defence Ministry said Saturday that it had shot down nine Ukrainian rockets fired at its southern Belgorod region, which borders Ukraine. Belgorod Gov. Vyacheslav Gladkov said that an artillery shell created a crater and shrapnel damaged a house, a store and a gas pipeline in an attack on the regional capital, also called Belgorod.

Local officials in Russia‘s Bryansk region, also bordering Ukraine, reported disruptions to the power supply following an unspecified attack on the town of Pogar.

Drone strikes and shelling in the Russian border regions are a regular occurrence.
