RBI mulls handing over frictionless credit platform to private company: Das

Mumbai: Governor Shaktikanta Das on Wednesday said the Reserve Bank is mulling handing over the newly-launched frictionless credit platform to a private company as it did with the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI).

Under the frictionless platform initiative, banks are extending loans like the Kisan credit cards in under 10 minutes.

Speaking at the Global Fintech Fest here, Das said the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) led the initiative and is involved on a day-to-day basis with it as that requires multi-agency coordination like accessing land records from states’ revenue departments and satellite data.

“… broadly, the idea is eventually we want to make it an open architecture. We do the open platform, we will gradually withdraw and hand it over to a private company like RBI did in the case of NPCI and it will be an open architecture on which any bank or NBFC can onboard,” Das said.

According to Das, the banks and non-bank finance companies can continue with their lending activities even after RBI hands over the platform.

The RBI chief said the platform was launched in select districts of two states in September 2022 and the pilot has enabled successful disbursal of up to Rs 1.6 lakh per borrower sans any collateral in a matter of few minutes as against the six weeks taken earlier with multiple visits to bank branches.

Asia Cup: Why Pakistan Were 'All Out' Despite Losing 8 Wickets vs India

Asia Cup 2023: Why Pakistan Were All Out Despite Losing 8 Wickets Against India

India beat Pakistan by 228 runs in Asia Cup 2023© X (formerly Twitter)

Pakistan were completely outplayed by the Indian cricket team as the Babar Azam-led side succumbed to a 228-run defeat in the Asia Cup 2023 Super 4 match on Monday. The batters never looked quite comfortable against the Indian pace attack but it was Kuldeep Yadav who was the pick of the bowlers with a brilliant five-wicket haul. The game ended when Pakistan lost eight wickets as both Haris Rauf and Naseem Shah were not cleared to bat after suffering niggles during the game. While Rauf did not take the pitch at all on Monday, Naseem bowled 9.2 overs for his side but left the field due to injury.

Pakistan skipper Babar Azam was not pleased with the performance of his side’s batters and in the aftermath of the match, he praised Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj.

“Weather not in our hands – but both bowling and batting. (How Rohit and Shubman attacked Pakistan’s main bowlers) They had a plan for our bowlers. And then KL and Virat followed up and finished very well. (Pakistan fans, disappointed, maybe in the run chase. Never in the hunt.) Jasprit and Siraj bowled very well in first ten overs swinging both ways. Yes we lost back to back wickets, couldn’t build partnerships.”

Virat Kohli (122) and K L Rahul (111) struck unbeaten centuries to steer India to a commanding 356 for two, the team’s joint highest total against Pakistan in ODIs.

Part time spinner Iftikhar Ahmed leaked 52 runs in 5.4 overs and was the second most expensive bowler for Pakistan after Shaheen Shah Afridi (1/79 in 10 overs).

In response, Pakistan were all out for 128 in 32 overs. Kuldeep Yadav was the stand out bowler for India as he ended with a five wicket haul.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un to visit Russia

The visit would be Kim’s first foreign trip since the COVID-19 pandemic, which had forced North Korea to enforce tight border controls for more than three years to shield its poor health care system

Seoul: North Korean leader Kim Jong Un will visit Russia, both countries said Monday, and he is expected to hold a highly anticipated meeting with President Vladimir Putin that has sparked Western concerns about a potential arms deal for Moscow’s war in Ukraine.

A brief statement on the Kremlin’s website said the visit is at Putin’s invitation and would take place “in the coming days”. It also was reported by North Korea’s official Korean Central News Agency, which said the leaders would meet — without specifying when and where.

“The respected Comrade Kim Jong Un will meet and have a talk with Comrade Putin during the visit,” it said.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said delegations from both countries will meet, but he didn’t confirm plans for a bilateral session between Putin and Kim, saying the leaders will meet one-on-one “if necessary”.

The visit would be Kim’s first foreign trip since the COVID-19 pandemic, which had forced North Korea to enforce tight border controls for more than three years to shield its poor health care system.

While Kim has shown to be more comfortable using planes than his famously flight-adverse father, he has also used his personal train for previous meetings with Putin, Chinese President Xi Jinping and former US President Donald Trump, reviving a symbol of his family’s dynastic rule.

Associated Press journalists near the North Korea-Russia frontier saw a green train with yellow trim — similar to one used by the reclusive Kim during previous foreign trips — at a station on the North Korean side of a border river.

It was unclear whether Kim was on the train, which was seen moving back and forth between the station and the approach to the bridge that connects the countries. It had not crossed the bridge as of 7 pm (1000 GMT).

Citing unidentified South Korean government sources, the Chosun Ilbo newspaper reported the train likely left the North Korean capital of Pyongyang on Sunday evening and that a Kim-Putin meeting is possible as early as Tuesday.
The Yonhap news agency and some other media published similar reports. Japan’s Kyodo news agency cited Russian officials as saying Kim was possibly heading for Russia in his personal train.

South Korea’s Presidential Office, Defense Ministry and National Intelligence Service didn’t immediately confirm those details.

US officials released intelligence last week that North Korea and Russia were arranging a meeting between their leaders that would take place within this month as they expand their cooperation in the face of deepening confrontations with the United States.

A possible venue for the meeting is the eastern Russian city of Vladivostok, where Putin arrived Monday to attend an international forum that runs through Wednesday, according to Russia’s TASS news agency.

The city was also the site of Putin’s first meeting with Kim in 2019. According to US officials, Putin could focus on securing more supplies of North Korean artillery and other ammunition to refill declining reserves as he seeks to defuse a Ukrainian counteroffensive and show that he’s capable of grinding out a long war of attrition.

That could potentially put more pressure on the United States and its partners to pursue negotiations as concerns over a protracted conflict grow despite their huge shipments of advanced weaponry to Ukraine in the past 17 months.
North Korea has possibly tens of millions of artillery shells and rockets based on Soviet designs that could potentially give a huge boost to the Russian army, analysts say.

In exchange, Kim could seek badly needed energy and food aid and advanced weapons technologies, including those related to intercontinental ballistic missiles, nuclear-capable ballistic missile submarines and military reconnaissance satellites, analysts say.

There are concerns that potential Russian technology transfers would increase the threat posed by Kim’s growing arsenal of nuclear weapons and missiles that are designed to target the US, South Korea, and Japan.

After a complicated, hot-and-cold relationship for decades, Russia and North Korea have been drawing closer since Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

The bond has been driven by Putin’s need for war help and Kim’s efforts to boost the visibility of his partnerships with traditional allies Moscow and Beijing as he tries to break out of diplomatic isolation and have North Korea be part of a united front against Washington.

While using the distraction caused by the Ukraine conflict to ramp up its weapons development, North Korea has repeatedly blamed Washington for the crisis in Ukraine, claiming the West’s “hegemonic policy” justified a Russian offensive in Ukraine to protect itself.

North Korea is the only nation besides Russia and Syria to recognize the independence of two Russian-backed separatist regions in eastern Ukraine — Donetsk and Luhansk -– and it has also hinted at an interest in sending construction workers to those areas to help with rebuilding efforts.

Russia -– along with China -– have blocked US-led efforts at the UN Security Council to strengthen sanctions on North Korea over its intensifying missile tests while accusing Washington of worsening tensions with Pyongyang by expanding military exercises with South Korea and Japan.

The United States has been accusing North Korea since last year of providing Russia with arms, including artillery shells sold to the Russian mercenary group Wagner.

Both Russian and North Korean officials denied such claims. But speculation about the countries’ military cooperation grew after Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu made a rare visit to North Korea in July, when Kim invited him to an arms exhibition and a massive military parade in the capital where he showcased ICBMs designed to target the US mainland.

Following that visit, Kim toured North Korea’s weapons factories, including a facility producing artillery systems where he urged workers to speed up the development and large-scale production of new kinds of ammunition.

Experts say Kim’s visits to the factories likely had a dual goal of encouraging the modernisation of North Korean weaponry and examining artillery and other supplies that could possibly be exported to Russia.

Jon Finer, US President Joe Biden’s chief deputy national security adviser, told reporters Sunday that buying weapons from North Korea “may be the best and may be the only option” open to Moscow as it tries to keep its war effort going.

“We have serious concerns about the prospect of North Korea potentially selling weapons, additional weapons, to the Russian military. It is interesting to reflect for a minute on what it says that when Russia goes around the world looking for partners that can help it, it lands on North Korea,” Finer said aboard a plane carrying Biden from India to Vietnam.

Some analysts say a potential meeting between Kim and Putin would be more about symbolic gains than substantial military cooperation.

Russia, which has always closely guarded its most important weapons technologies, even from key allies such as China, could be unwilling to make major technology transfers with North Korea for what is likely to be limited war supplies transported over a small rail link between the countries, they say.

6 Syrian citizens killed in ISIL attack in Deir ez-Zur

Six Syrian citizens were killed as a result of the clash between the Al-Busayrah tribe and ISIL in the desert of “Al-Shula” in Deir ez-Zur.

SANA stated that 6 shepherds were killed and two others were injured in the attack by terrorists in the Al-Shula area in the southern countryside.

While the war and crisis in Syria has entered its 13th year, many terrorist groups supported by the Western-Zionist front, including ISIL, have been defeated by the Resistance fighters and the Syrian army, but their Western-Zionist leaders still seek to continue the crisis in Syria.

This trend shows that the only way left for the Syrian people, army, and government is to confront terrorists of any kind, whether American or ISIL.

The remnants of the ISIL terrorist group are currently operating in the Syrian desert region.

Novak Djokovic honors late Kobe Bryant after US Open victory

Before the trophy presentation, Djokovic offered a tribute to Bryant, who sadly lost his life in 2020.

Novak Djokovic honors late Kobe Bryant after US Open victory

New York: Serbian tennis star Novak Djokovic paid a heartfelt tribute to Kobe Bryant after winning the US Open 2023 men’s singles event here.

Djokovic defeated Medvedev in straight sets to win the title at the Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Ahead of the trophy presentation, Djokovic paid a tribute to Bryant, who had tragically passed away in 2020. The Serbian wore a t-shirt that had an image of him with the LA Lakers legend and the message ‘Mamba Forever’ written on it.

“I thought of doing this T-shirt eventually if I got the chance to win the tournament. It was about seven days ago. I didn’t share it with anyone until a few days ago when I asked my people to help me out to make this shirt,” Djokovic was quoted as saying.

“Kobe was a close, close friend. We chatted a lot about the winner’s mentality when I was struggling with an injury and trying to make my comeback, work my way back to the top of the game.”

Earlier, the 36-year-old Serbian won his fourth US Open and a record-tying 24th Grand Slam singles title after eliminating Medvedev in straight sets in the final here.

The battle between the second and the third seed saw Djokovic cruise past Medvedev 6-3, 7-6(5), 6-3. With the victory, he became the oldest US Open men’s singles champion in the Open Era.

Having also won the Australian Open and the French Open this year, Djokovic became the first man to win three Grand Slams singles titles in a season four times.

The win also marked a revenge to Medvedev, who in 2021 in straight sets halted Djokovic’s pace to become the first man to clinch all four Grand Slams in the same year since Rod Laver in 1969.

Following his victory, Djokovic will also return to the world No. 1 spot on Monday.

This Stock Hit 10% Upper Circuit Day After India-Europe Trade Corridor Deal

This Stock Hit 10% Upper Circuit Day After India-Europe Trade Corridor Deal

The upper circuit is the highest possible price that the stock of a firm can trade at.

New Delhi:

It is party time for investors who have put in their bets on shares of companies involved in railways and its allied activities.

An ambitious rail-port economic corridor deal to connect India-Middle East-Europe, seen as an alternate supply chain route in a completely evolved post-pandemic world order, was signed on the sidelines of the successful G20 Summit held in New Delhi — thus putting focus on railway infrastructure.

Shares of Indian Railway Finance Corp, the dedicated funding arm of Indian Railways, have hit a 10 per cent upper circuit minutes after the opening bell on Monday. The upper circuit is the highest possible price that the stock of a firm can trade at on that particular day.

Besides IRFC, Rail Vikas Nigam, RITES, Railtel Corporation of India, and Titagarh Rail Systems were in the range of 3-9 higher at the time of writing this report.

Coming back to the deal, Saudi Arabia, the European Union, India, United Arab Emirates (UAE), France, Germany, Italy, and the US committed to work together to establish the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC).

The corridor is expected to stimulate economic development through enhanced connectivity and economic integration between Asia, the Arabian Gulf, and Europe.

The IMEC will comprise of two separate corridors, the east corridor connecting India to the Arabian Gulf and the northern corridor connecting the Arabian Gulf to Europe.

It will include a railway that, upon completion, will provide a reliable and cost-effective cross-border ship-to-rail transit network to supplement existing maritime and road transport routes – enabling goods and services to transit to, from, and between India, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Israel, and Europe.

Along the railway route, they intend to enable the laying of cable for electricity and digital connectivity, as well as pipe for clean hydrogen export.

Meanwhile, the broader Indian stock indices started Monday’s trade on a firm note, taking cues from the overall successful G20 Summit in New Delhi.

The consensus on the New Delhi declaration by all G20 member countries despite a divided house given the ongoing war in Ukraine and the West’s sanctions on Russia, the ambitious rail-port economic corridor deal to connect India-Middle East-Europe, and the launch of Global Biofuel Alliance on the summit sidelines seemed to have attracted investors to bet in the market.

Sensex and Nifty were 0.3-0.4 per cent higher from their Friday close of 66,861.16 points and 19,910.10 points, with all sectoral indices in the green. Last week, Indian stocks ended at a high to log their best week in over two months

Going ahead, August inflation data in India and the US, expected to be released on Tuesday and Wednesday are likely to be the next market trigger for fresh cues.

Retail inflation in India rose sharply in July to 7.44 per cent and in the process breached RBI’s 6 per cent upper tolerance target, largely due to a sharp spurt in vegetable, fruit, and pulses prices.

5-Year-Old Girl Dies Days After Being Misdiagnosed With Common Cold

5-Year-Old Girl Dies Days After Being Misdiagnosed With Common Cold In Australia

Cathy’s lips turned blue and her mother called the ambulance

A five-year-old girl died from a bacterial infection after being misdiagnosed with a common cold. However, the medics later discovered that Cathy Kassis had been struck down with Strep A- a type of bacteria that can cause sore throats, scarlet fever and skin sores, reported News.com.au. But by the time she was diagnosed with the infection, it was sadly too late and her body had gone into failure.

Cathy’s stepfather Justin Sutton recounted the ordeal to 7 News, he said that he and Cathy’s mother Jasmine Worobez, were concerned from the onset of her illness and their fears continued to grow as she became sicker. Despite their concern, the doctors told them that she was suffering from a virus and advised them not to be concerned.

“After three days she had lost her voice completely, so we were obviously a bit concerned,” he told the local channel. The medics told them that it was merely a viral infection that needed to run its course.

However, her health deteriorated and the young girl struggled to breathe. The parents rushed her to hospital. “She wasn’t breathing properly … it was almost like an asthma attack or what it’s like to watch someone with emphysema trying to breathe,” Mr Sutton said.

After running COVID-19 and RSV tests which came back negative, the hospital advised the family she was suffering from a viral infection and sent her home. A few days later, Cathy’s lips turned blue and her mother called the ambulance. “She was going in and out of consciousness and had sort of collapsed in Jazz’s arms,” Mr Sutton recounted the ordeal.

He even performed CPR while on the phone with emergency services for around 15 minutes, then the paramedics arrived and took over while he set up the defibrillator. She was airlifted to Westmead Children’s Hospital where she was pronounced dead.

“They told us she had been pronounced brain dead. The coroner found the cause of death was strep A, and Westmead had found that out through a simple throat swab.”

Mr Sutton informed that he is proud of his daughter for donating her organs a few days later. “She donated three organs, and all three recipients are now expected to make a full recovery,” he said.

The family is now raising about Strep A, “It could’ve been treated with just a normal course of antibiotics,” Sutton lamented, emphasizing the importance of trusting one’s instincts when something doesn’t feel right.

Mumbai:

A special court in Mumbai on Monday extended till September 14 the ED remand of Jet Airways founder Naresh Goyal, who has been arrested in a money laundering case linked to an alleged fraud of Rs 538 crore at Canara Bank.

Naresh Goyal was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on September 1 under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) following a long session of questioning at the central agency’s office in Mumbai.

The 74-year-old businessman was produced before the special PMLA court at the end of his initial remand on Monday.

The central probe agency sought his custody for another four day for further investigation in the case.

The ED told the court that maximum money siphoned off has been stacked in foreign accounts and there is a person in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to look after it.

Special judge for cases under PMLA, MG Deshpande, then extended Goyal’s custody till September 14.

The money laundering case stems from an FIR of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) against Jet Airways, Goyal, his wife Anita and some former executives of the now grounded private airline in connection with an alleged Rs 538-crore fraud case at Canara Bank.

The FIR was registered on the government-run lender’s complaint which alleged that it sanctioned credit limits and loans to Jet Airways (India) Ltd to the tune of Rs 848.86 crore of which Rs 538.62 crore was outstanding.

Meghalaya Woman Claims To Have Found Nails In Tablets Health Centre Gave

The woman discovered two nails inside amoxicillin tablets prescribed by doctors (Representational)

Shillong:

In a bizarre case, a woman in Meghalaya’s East Khasi Hills district has alleged that she found nails inside antibiotic tablets prescribed by doctors at Pomlum Primary Healthcare Center (PHC) for her 12-year-old daughter, prompting the authorities to launch a probe into the matter, officials said on Monday.

The incident had taken place on Saturday when the mother discovered two nails inside two of the 10 amoxicillin tablets prescribed by doctors at the PHC, they said.

The mother, who did not disclose her name, told a local news channel in Shillong that two nails were found inside a strip containing 10 tablets the health centre had given to her daughter.

She had lodged a complaint with the PHC officials urging the authorities to take action against anyone involved in such grave misconduct.

Health Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh constituted a medical team headed by senior specialists and an inspector of drugs from the department which rushed to the PHC for verification and investigation.

“Upon arrival, it was found that the nail that was supposedly inside the capsule was actually bigger than the capsule itself,” Mr Lyngdoh told news agency PTI.

She said this in itself raises doubts about the genuineness of the complaint.

According to the minister, the capsules in other facilities were also checked if there was any similar complaint but there was none.
