Asia Cup: Heavy rains during morning in Colombo on India-Pakistan match reserve day

Colombo: Ahead of the start of the Asia Cup Super Four clash between India and Pakistan at Colombo on the reserve day, there are some discouraging signs from the Island nation that have put the possibility of finishing the game under doubt.

The electrifying match between India and Pakistan in the Super Four stage of Asia Cup 2023 was been called off and moved for a reserve day as rain did not allow any play after 24.1 overs on Sunday.

The play was halted for almost four hours today as the rain kept on coming back. India will resume their innings today at 147/2, with Virat Kohli (8*) and KL Rahul (17*) unbeaten. Skipper Rohit Sharma (56) and Shubman Gill (58) had hit delightful fifties. There was heavy rains in Colombo at 7 AM on the reserve day. The skies are extremely cloudy.

Moreover, the onfield faced immense damage as there were noticeable wet patches at the R Premadas Stadium, where the match is taking place. More rain will only make these patches worse, delay the game further or even cause an abandonment without any further action.

If this match is washed off, India and Pakistan will take one point each. Pakistan will move to the top of the Super Four standings with three points, having won against Bangladesh. Sri Lanka has already registered a win against Bangladesh too, worth two points, almost knocking them out of the competition.

In this case, India’s next two matches against Sri Lanka (September 12) and Bangladesh (September 15) will be must-win matches for India and reach a total of five points.

Losing even one of these matches or two more washouts will reduce India to just three points, which will put India’s qualifying chances in danger. It will be down to how the points table plays out for the rest of the teams due to their results, rain and net-run-rate if India is to qualify for the final with three points.

India vs Sri Lanka, Sri Lanka vs Pakistan and India vs Bangladesh are the remaining fixtures before the finals on September 17 in Colombo.

"Nehru Gave Away UN Security Council Seat To China On Platter": BJP

'Nehru Gave Away UN Security Council Seat To China On Platter': BJP

Nehru gave away UNSC Seat to China on a platter, said BJP

New Delhi:

The BJP on Monday attacked the Congress, alleging that former prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru had “given away” the UN Security Council’s permanent seat to China “on a platter”.

On Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi made a renewed push for expansion of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) and reforms in all global institutions to reflect the world’s “new realities”, as the G20 Summit drew to a close with the US, Russia and France praising the meeting’s outcomes under Indian presidency.

“Today, while India, under the leadership of PM Modi is shaping the world, and the world is backing the country’s bid for a permanent UNSC seat, which Nehru gave away to China on a platter…The unpatriotic deeds of the Gandhi family haunt our history, to date,” the BJP said in a post on X.

The UNSC has five permanent members — the US, China, France, Britain and Russia.

Making a fresh pitch for expansion of the UNSC and reforms in global institutions, Modi had also said that in order to take the world towards a better future, it is necessary that the global systems are according to the present realities.

“Today, the United Nations Security Council is also an example of this. When the UN was established, the world was completely different from what it is today. At that time, there were 51 founding members in the UN. Today the number of countries included in the UN is around 200,” Modi had said.

“Despite this, the number of permanent members in the UNSC remains the same. The world has since changed a lot in every aspect. Be it transport, communication, health and education, every sector has been transformed. These new realities should reflect in our new global structure,” he had said.

A day after Prime Minister Modi’s renewed push for expansion of the UNSC, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva on Monday echoed similar views and called for reform of the powerful UN body to reflect contemporary realities.

Brazil is the next chair of the G20 bloc. The president also said that his country wants the equality issue to be the “core issue” during its presidency.

On Sunday at a press briefing, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Turkiye would be “proud” if a country like India becomes a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).

At the same time, Erdogan had said all non-P5 members should have an opportunity to become members of the Security Council by rotation.

In a joint statement on Friday, US President Biden had lauded India’s G20 Presidency for further “demonstrating” how the G20 as a forum is delivering important outcomes.

Continuing to share the view that global governance must be more inclusive and representative, President Biden reaffirmed his support for a reformed UNSC with India as a permanent member, the joint statement said.

India has been at the forefront of the years-long efforts to reform the UNSC, saying it rightly deserved a place as a permanent member of the United Nations.

Iran dismisses ‘baseless’ reports on troop deployment on Azerbaijan border

Iran has dismissed as “baseless” reports about the deployment of its troops on the northern border with Azerbaijan under the current tense circumstances in the South Caucasus.

Deputy Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces for International Cooperation Brigadier General Mohammad Ahadi addressed the allegations during an interview to Azerbaijani Press Agency (APA) on Sunday. The senior military official, leading an Iranian military delegation, was in Baku to participate in the Azerbaijan-Iran Joint Commission meeting.

These are “completely groundless” reports, he said, playing down suggestions that Iran sought to dispatch forces for engagement in a possible war between Azerbaijan and Armenia.

Iran and Azerbaijan enjoy “very good” relations, he said.

Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces Major General Baqeri and Azeri Defense Minister Colonel General Zakir Hasanov recently held a phone conversation over the situation in the region.

On Saturday, the Azerbaijani defense minister received the Iranian delegation and discussed the reconstruction work undertaken in the liberated territories under the leadership of Azerbaijan’s President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces Ilham Aliyev and the operational situation on the Azerbaijani-Armenian conditional border and in the Karabakh economic region.

During the meeting, the sides also exchanged views about the prospects for the development of military cooperation, regional security, and other issues of common interest.

In a phone conversation with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan on Saturday, President Ebrahim Raeisi said Iran was ready to play an effective role in preventing new clashes and any geopolitical change in the disputed Caucasus region of Nagorno-Karabakh.

The president reiterated Iran’s support for the territorial integrity of all regional countries.

Located in the South Caucasus, the landlocked region of Nagorno-Karabakh has been at the center of a dispute between Azerbaijan and Armenia for more than three decades. Since gaining independence from the former Soviet Union in 1991, the two neighboring countries have fought two wars, in 1994 and 2020, over the mountainous territory.

Karabakh, while acknowledged as a part of Azerbaijan by the international community, has a predominantly Armenian population that has persistently opposed Azerbaijani governance since a separatist war in 1994.

Tensions remain high and skirmishes along the shared border are a regular occurrence despite mediation efforts by the European Union, the United States and Russia.

New Saudi ambassador submits credential to Iran FM

Abdullah bin Saud al-Anzi in a meeting on Sunday at the foreign ministry compound submitted a copy of his credential to the top Iranian diplomat.

Al-Anzi was formerly Saudi Arabia’s ambassador to Oman.

Saudi Arabia’s new ambassador has started his mission in Iran after a seven-year hiatus.

Speaking upon arrival in Tehran last Tuesday, Abdullah bin Saud al-Anzi said the directives of the Saudi leadership stress the need to “enhance relations and intensify communication and meetings between the kingdom and Iran … toward broader horizons.”

The two countries agreed to resume diplomatic ties back in March following a Chinese-brokered deal after a seven-year estrangement.

Iran officially reopened its embassy in Riyadh in June, followed by its consulate in Jeddah and representative office with the Organization of Islamic Cooperation.

The Saudi embassy in Tehran and its consulate in Mashhad have also resumed operations.

Manila: Germany defeated Serbia 83-77 to clinch its first FIBA Basketball World Cup title here. Dennis Schroder was named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the tournament.

Schroder, boasting an average of 17.6 points, 6.1 assists, and 2 rebounds throughout the World Cup, delivered a game-high 28 points in the final. Franz Wagner contributed 19 points and seven rebounds, while Johannes Voigtmann added 12 points and eight rebounds, reports Xinhua.

For Serbia, Aleksa Avramovic led the scoring with 21 points, and Bogdan Bogdanovic chipped in with 17 points and five assists. Nikola Milutinov, however, struggled, missing all four of his attempts and ending the game with just two points and four assists.

The Mall of Asia Arena felt like a home game for Serbia, thanks to their passionate fans. However, concerns arose early on when Ognjen Dobric sustained an injury and had to leave the court just three minutes into the game.

Historically, in each of the previous five finals in the 21st century, the team leading at half-time emerged victorious. But Sunday’s final saw both teams tied at 47 points at halftime.

A pivotal moment occurred in the third quarter when a contentious foul was called on Aleksa Avramovic as he attempted to block Schroder’s shot from behind the arc. Capitalizing on it, Germany went on a 9-0 run after Schroder converted two of his three free throws. Serbia faced offensive challenges, scoring only 10 points in the quarter and lagging by 12 points into the final quarter.

Avramovic, however, ignited in the fourth quarter. The 28-year-old guard netted 16 points, helping Serbia reduce the deficit to just three points with 1:21 remaining.

Schroder, demonstrating resilience under pressure, executed a layup and sank two free throws to secure the victory for Germany.

Germany remained undefeated by winning all eight games, and became the fourth European country and seventh overall to win the world crown. It also marked the first time a nation clinched the FIBA World Cup title in its debut in the final since Spain faced Greece in 2006.

Working on with health insurers to ensure 100 pc cashless claim settlement soon: IRDAI

Mumbai: Insurance sector regulator IRDAI on Wednesday said it is working on with health insurance providers to ensure 100 per cent cashless settlement of medical expense claims as soon as possible.

Currently cashless claim process is tiresome and insurers deduct 10 per cent or more from the total billing in the name of consumables and other heads.

Also, most hospitals don’t allow cashless admissions even though the insurance product offers such a facility, citing one or other excuses.

Addressing the three-day global fintech festival here on the second day, IRDAI (Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India) chairman Debasish Panda said the regulator is working with health insurers and the national health authority and also the insurance council to roll out 100 per cent cashless claim settlements as soon as possible.

However, he didn’t give any time frame.

IRDAI is also working closely with the Insurance Council and the National Health Authority to onboard more hospitals onto the National Health Exchange for this, he said.

Panda said the regulator is working with insurers to facilitate better and affordable pricing of health insurance for the elderly, which, he said, is an area of critical concern now as current pricing make mediclaim policies beyond the reach of most of the elderly.
On the drive for ‘insurance for all’ by 2047 when the nation will be celebrating a century of independence, panda said, “we should work for achieving the target much before the terminal date”.

Clear need in India to redouble efforts to uphold rights of all minorities: UN rights chief

United Nations: United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk on Monday said that there is a clear need in India to redouble efforts to uphold the rights of all minorities in the country.

Speaking at the 54th Session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva, Turk said that his office in India frequently receives information that marginalised minority communities are subjected to violence and discrimination.

“Muslims are often the target of such attacks, most recently in Haryana and Gurugram, in northern India. In Manipur, other communities have also been facing violence and insecurity since May,” he said in his global update.

“There is a clear need to redouble efforts to uphold the rights of all minorities, by dealing in a forthright manner with intolerance, hate speech, religious extremism and discrimination,” he added.

India in the past has said that the Indian authorities at all levels, including the judiciary, are seized of the situation in Manipur and are taking steps to maintain peace and harmony and law and order.

Earlier this month, India strongly rejected comments by UN experts on Manipur, terming them “unwarranted, presumptive and misleading” and asserting that the situation in the Northeast state is peaceful.
