Rupee depreciated for the 4th straight day by 9 paise, reaching a lifetime low of 83.22 to the dollar
New Delhi:
The Rupee depreciated for the fourth straight day and settled 9 paise lower at its lifetime low of 83.22 (provisional) against the US dollar on Thursday amid a firm American currency and elevated crude oil prices.
Positive trend in the domestic equity markets, however, provided a cushion to the rupee, according to forex traders.
Crude oil breached the USD 90 per barrel-mark after oil producing countries agreed to extend supply cut till December this year while dollar stayed firm on safe-haven demand.
At the interbank foreign exchange, the domestic unit opened at 83.15 against the dollar and traded in the range of 83.12 to 83.22 against the greenback. It ended at the lowest level of 83.22 (provisional) against the dollar, registering a fall of 9 paise from its previous close.
On Wednesday, the rupee settled 9 paise lower at 83.13 against the dollar. Earlier, the Indian currency had closed at the same level of 83.13 on August 21.
The domestic unit has declined 60 paise since Monday when it had closed 9 paise lower at 82.71 against the greenback. On Tuesday, the unit had plunged 33 paise, the sharpest fall this week.
“We expect rupee to trade with a negative bias on strong dollar and elevated crude oil prices. Disappointing European data may further support dollar. Rising US treasury yields and concerns over global economic growth may also weigh on rupee,” Anuj Choudhary – Research Analyst at Sharekhan by BNP Paribas, said.
Meanwhile, the dollar index, which gauges the greenback’s strength against a basket of six currencies, rose by 0.09 per cent to 104.95.
Brent crude futures, the global oil benchmark, was trading 0.39 per cent lower at USD 90.25 per barrel.
On the domestic equity market front, the BSE Sensex closed 385.04 points or 0.58 per cent higher at 66,265.56 points while the broader Nifty jumped 116 points or 0.59 per cent to end at 19,727.05 points.
Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) were net sellers in the capital market on Wednesday as they offloaded shares worth Rs 3,245.86 crore, according to exchange data.

Top Congress leader Sonia Gandhi would announce release the five poll guarantees at the rally on September 17, state Congress president and MP A Revanth Reddy has said.

Hyderabad: The Congress would announce five ‘guarantees’ to Telangana people ahead of the Legislative Assembly elections at a public meeting to be held here on September 17.
Top Congress leader Sonia Gandhi would announce release the five poll guarantees at the rally on September 17, state Congress president and MP A Revanth Reddy has said.
Congress has already announced that the first meeting of the newly-constituted Congress Working Committee under party chief Mallikarjun Kharge will be held in Hyderabad on September 16.
An extended Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting will be held on September 17 that will include all Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) chiefs.
The Congress had released ‘Farmers Declaration’, ‘SC, ST Declaration’ and ‘Youth Declaration’, comprising its promises to the Telangana voters in the assembly polls scheduled to be held in a couple of months.
In the Legislative Assembly polls in neighbouring Karnataka, the ‘five guarantees’ announced by Congress is believed to be a major factor in the party’s success.
The ruling BRS in Telangana has already announced candidates for 115 of the total 119 Assembly seats.
Meanwhile, Telangana is set to witness hectic activity on September 17, the day the erstwhile Hyderabad State under Nizam rule merged with the Indian Union in 1948.
The Union Government and different political parties have planned to organise events in Hyderabad to celebrate the day.
This has assumed significance in view of the upcoming elections.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah had participated in the official celebration of the ‘Liberation Day’ held by the Centre in Hyderabad last year and he is expected to attend the event in the Telangana capital this year as well.
September 17, the day the then princely state of Hyderabad merged with the Indian Union in 1948, is interpreted differently by different parties in Telangana.
The CPI has decided to conduct week-long events from September 11-17 to mark the Telangana Peasant Armed Struggle (1946-51) which was spearheaded by the Communists.
The CPI says that the struggle forced the Nizam to merge Hyderabad State with the Indian Union.
The Asaduddin Owaisi-led AIMIM would organise a bike rally and public meeting on September 17 which it would celebrate as ‘national integration day’.
Describing September 17, 1948 as ‘Liberation Day’, the BJP has been fighting for its official celebration by government for about two decades now.
The BRS government had declared the day last year as National Integration Day.
Union Tourism Minister and BJP president in Telangana G Kishan Reddy on Saturday hit out at the Congress and BRS for not officially celebrating September 17 during their tenure in office allegedly under the influence of AIMIM.
Russian state news agency Ria Novosti reported on Tuesday that a train carrying Kim entered Primorsky region in Russia’s Far East.
According to North Korea’s official KCNA news agency, Kim, accompanied by officials from the military, the government, and his ruling Workers’ Party of Korea had left for Russia from Pyongyang by his private train on Sunday afternoon.
Kim does not travel abroad frequently, and the visit is his first trip abroad in four years.
“It will be a full-fledged visit,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told Russian media. “There will be negotiations between two delegations, and after that, if necessary, the leaders will continue their communication in a one-on-one format.”
Putin is currently in Vladivostok for the plenary session of the Eastern Economic Forum, which runs through Wednesday.
Peskov said that the meeting between Putin and Kim would take place after the forum, and would discuss “sensitive” subjects.
“Obviously, as neighbors, our countries also cooperate in sensitive areas that should not be the subject of public disclosure and announcements. This is perfectly normal for neighboring states,” he said.

Palestinian resistance factions have launched large-scale military exercises across the besieged Gaza Strip amid threats by the far-right Israeli administration of Benjamin Netanyahu to assassinate high-profile leaders of the groups.
The drills, codenamed al-Rukn al-Shadid 4 (Mighty Pillar 4), kicked off at 7.00 a.m. local time (0400 GMT) on Tuesday in various neighborhoods of the coastal enclave and involved various units. They were scheduled to wrap up at 11 a.m.
Palestinian fighters annihilated designated targets in the sea by firing homegrown missiles and rockets during the exercise, which marks the 18th anniversary of the Israeli military withdrawal from the Gaza Strip.
Gaza’s Interior Ministry announced in a statement that field operations would also be carried out as part of the drills, and security forces would be deployed in conjunction as well.
The ministry noted that the exercises would also include assaults on the hypothetical enemy’s positions in addition to extensive movements of resistance units, armored vehicles, ambulances and paramedic teams.
The Joint Operations Room of the Palestinian Resistance Factions confirmed on Sunday that it had conducted a reconnaissance and inspection tour of military sites and surveillance points along the separation barrier between the Gaza Strip and the 1948 occupied territories.
It stressed that the tour was undertaken to ensure Palestinian resistance fighters’ preparedness to confront any military confrontation with Israeli forces in the highly strategic Gaza Strip.
The joint operations room praised the vigilance and dedication of Palestinian fighters and called on them to raise their readiness level.
Last December, Palestinian resistance forces staged Rukn al-Shadid 3 drills in the northern Gaza Strip. The exercises featured elite fighters and involved light and medium-range weapons in close combat situations.
Rukn al-Shadid drills were first held in 2020. The exercises have been staged annually ever since and involve various units showcasing their military capabilities.
The maneuvers also serve as a platform for different divisions of Palestinian resistance factions to share their experience in order to enhance coordination on the field.
India will take on Pakistan in their Super Four Asia Cup clash at Colombo on Sunday
Updated On – 09:09 PM, Sat – 9 September 23
Colombo: Ahead of his side’s Asia Cup Super Four clash against arch-rivals Pakistan, Indian batter Shubman Gill said on Saturday that not playing against a quality Pakistani bowling attack has proved to be a reason why Men in Blue are struggling to take on them at times.
India will take on Pakistan in their Super Four Asia Cup clash at Colombo on Sunday. Talking about India’s struggles with Pakistan’s left-arm pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi, Gill said in a pre-match press conference, “When you are playing at this level, you play left-armer pacers previously at some point of your career. We do not play Pakistan that much as compared to the other sides. They have a quality bowling attack. When you do not face such a bowling attack frequently and are not used to it, it makes a difference.”
Talking about how contrasting him and his opening partner skipper Rohit Sharma are, Gill said that this contrast makes it difficult for bowlers to contain them. “I am someone who likes to play along the ground in the powerplay. Rohit takes on bowlers aerially.
This combination works well for us. How different we are as players makes it difficult for bowlers to contain us,” said Gill.
Talking about his brief slump after the Indian Premier League (IPL), Gill said that sometimes it is just the quality of bowling that outpowers a batter. “Yes you go back to the good times (during a slump). Sometimes it is not even about technique. It is just about the bowlers, they are also there to take wickets. You can get some good deliveries.
When you play well, there are things that go in your favour. You just have to trust your game and keep going to get those big runs,” he said. Questioned if the players see and follow Pakistan skipper Babar Azam’s batting, Gill agreed and termed him a “World-Class player”. “Yes, definitely we follow him. When a player is doing well. Everyone watches him to find out why they are doing so good, what their speciality. The same thing goes for Babar. He is a world-class player and we all do admire him,” said Gill.
Talking about the differences in bowling of Pakistan pacers Shaheen and Naseem Shah, Gill said that the former offers more swing, but the latter has more pace and bowls in good areas. Gill said that the team is clear about their roles, batting positions heading into the ICC Cricket World Cup, which will start from October 5 onwards.
Talking about the team’s plans with their batting, Gill said, “Our plans will be the same, to give a solid foundation and then dominate. In that last game against Pakistan, our top order did not do well. But still, we made around 260 and looked set to make 310-320 runs at some point at such a wicket.
These are good signs.” Pakistan: Babar Azam (c), Abdullah Shafique, Fakhar Zaman, Imam-ul-Haq, Salman Ali Agha, Iftikhar Ahmed, Mohammad Rizwan, Mohammad Haris, Shadab Khan, Mohammad Nawaz, Usama Mir, Faheem Ashraf, Haris Rauf, Mohammad Wasim Jnr, Naseem Shah, Shaheen Afridi, Saud Shakeel, Tayyab Tahir (travelling reserve).

Mumbai: The rupee recovered 8 paise to close at 82.62 against the US dollar on Friday due to forex inflows and strong macro data.
The domestic currency also found support from positive sentiment in equity markets while a stronger dollar and a spike in crude oil prices restricted gains.

The American currency stayed firm tracking cues from positive GDP numbers in the US while forex traders awaited employment and manufacturing growth numbers.
Anuj Choudhary, Research Analyst at Sharekhan by BNP Paribas, said: “We expect rupee to trade with a slight negative bias on rising US dollar and surge in crude oil prices. However, rise in risk appetite in global markets may support rupee at lower levels. Traders may remain cautious ahead of US non-farm payroll report and ISM manufacturing PMI data. USDINR spot price is expected to trade in a range of Rs 82.30 to Rs 83.20.” Meanwhile, the dollar index, which gauges the greenback’s strength against a basket of six currencies, rebounded 0.59 per cent to 104.23.

It was alleged that Police Constable Dharni failed to use the appropriate force.
London:
An Indian-origin police officer has been dismissed from Scotland Yard after a misconduct hearing found she had used “unreasonable force” on duty while arresting a man in north London two years ago.
Police Constable (PC) Mandeep Dharni, attached to the Metropolitan Police’s North West Basic Command Unit (BCU) in the UK capital, appeared at a misconduct hearing last week related to the incident which occurred in September 2021 in a car park in Barnet.
It was alleged that PC Dharni failed to use the appropriate force and failed to act with authority, respect and courtesy when restraining a man, who was later charged with criminal damage and public order offences.
The hearing concluded Dharni had “breached the Standards of Professional Behaviour at the level of gross misconduct in relation to Authority, Respect and Courtesy, Use of Force and Discreditable Conduct after she used unreasonable force on duty during the arrest of a man”.
“All our officers know they will be held to account for any use of force while on duty,” said Chief Superintendent Dan Knowles, in charge of the Met’s policing in north-west London.
“On this occasion, PC Dharni went beyond what was acceptable or reasonable in the situation, especially as there were a number of other officers in attendance helping to detain the suspect,” he said.
A video of the incident was shared on social media and the officer was placed on restricted duties. The matter was referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct and they referred it back to the Met’s Directorate of Professional Standards (DPS). After hearing all the evidence, the misconduct panel found the allegations proven and she was dismissed without notice.
