Commerce ministry to organise workshops on promoting exports through e-commerce

The Foreign Trade Policy 2023 has mandated to handhold and conduct outreach programmes to promote e-commerce exports

New Delhi: The commerce ministry on Friday said it has decided to organise monthly workshops to raise awareness about ways to promote exports through e-commerce mediums.

The Foreign Trade Policy 2023 has mandated to handhold and conduct outreach programmes to promote e-commerce exports.

In addition to increasing awareness about e-commerce-related rules and processes, actions for capacity building and skill development for the promotion of exports through online medium is also mandated.

“In this regard, monthly workshops on e-commerce exports are proposed by this directorate,” according to a trade notice of DGFT (Directorate General of Foreign Trade).

The workshops will cover aspects related to cross-border logistics, postal and customs compliances and cross-border payment mechanisms.

“The proposed workshops shall be held during the 1st week of each month through Video Conference. In-person workshops shall also be organised where feasible,” it said.

The DGFT has also invited experienced e-commerce exporters to share their experiences and advise new entrepreneurs.
Think-tank Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI) in its report has stated that India should target USD 350 billion worth of goods exports through e-commerce by 2030 and for that the government needs to address pain points of the sector by taking steps like formulating a separate policy.

With Global business-to-consumer (B2C) e-commerce exports estimated to grow from USD 800 billion to USD 8 trillion by 2030, India’s strengths in high-demand customized products, expanding seller base, and higher profit margins per unit of export place it in a prime position to benefit from this trend.

GTRI has identified 21 action points for accelerating the country’s exports through online medium.

India’s current e-commerce export numbers remain far below their potential. Currently, e-commerce exports account for only USD 2 billion, less than 0.5 per cent of the country’s total goods export basket.

“The country must plan to export USD 350 billion, or about one-third of its total goods, through e-commerce by 2030. This will require focus on developing the ecosystem for e-commerce exports to fully realize its potential,” the report has said.

The GTRI suggestions include redefining the responsibilities of sellers; simplifying payment reconciliation and processes; developing business ecosystem; and setting up a National Trade Network for the medium.

North Korean leader arrives in Russia for talks with Putin

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has arrived in Russia for a meeting with President Vladimir Putin that will involve discussing “sensitive” subjects, according to the Kremlin spokesman.

Russian state news agency Ria Novosti reported on Tuesday that a train carrying Kim entered Primorsky region in Russia’s Far East.

According to North Korea’s official KCNA news agency, Kim, accompanied by officials from the military, the government, and his ruling Workers’ Party of Korea had left for Russia from Pyongyang by his private train on Sunday afternoon.

Kim does not travel abroad frequently, and the visit is his first trip abroad in four years.

“It will be a full-fledged visit,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told Russian media. “There will be negotiations between two delegations, and after that, if necessary, the leaders will continue their communication in a one-on-one format.”

Putin is currently in Vladivostok for the plenary session of the Eastern Economic Forum, which runs through Wednesday.

Peskov said that the meeting between Putin and Kim would take place after the forum, and would discuss “sensitive” subjects.

“Obviously, as neighbors, our countries also cooperate in sensitive areas that should not be the subject of public disclosure and announcements. This is perfectly normal for neighboring states,” he said.

The US has claimed that Kim and Putin are likely to discuss providing Russia with weapons for the war in Ukraine.

On Monday, Washington warned Pyongyang not to sell weapons to Russia that will be used in the war in Ukraine.

Peskov downplayed US “warnings” over the talks, saying “In building our relations with our neighbors, including North Korea, the important thing for us is the interests of our two countries, not Washington’s warnings.”

US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said, “I will remind both countries that any transfer of arms from North Korea to Russia would be in violation of multiple United Nations Security Council resolutions.”

“We, of course, have aggressively enforced our sanctions against entities that fund Russia’s war effort, and we will continue to enforce those sanctions and will not hesitate to impose new sanctions if appropriate.”

Moscow and Pyongyang have further enhanced ties since the start of the war in Ukraine last year.

Kim has described the war in Ukraine as a US “proxy war” to destroy Russia. He has condemned Western military aid to Kiev and blamed the “hegemonic policy” and “high-handedness” of the United States and the West for the conflict.

Russia began what it calls a special military operation in Ukraine on February 24, 2022. Moscow said the operation was aimed at defending Ukraine’s pro-Russia population in Donetsk and Luhansk, eastern Ukrainian regions, against persecution by Kiev.

Moscow has frequently warned that a continued supply of Western arms and military equipment for the Ukrainian military would only prolong the war.

Russia developing weapons based on new physical principles

“If one looks into the security sphere, new physical principles weapons will ensure the security of any country in the near historic perspective. We understand this very well and are working on it,” Putin said during a meeting with the moderators of key sessions at the 8th Eastern Economic Forum (EEF).

Developing weapons based on new physical principles involves the use of novel technologies and principles of action. Such weapons include laser, ultrasonic, radio-frequency arms and others, state news agency TASS reported.

Indore: Reserve Bank Governor Shaktikanta Das on Friday said the central bank expects inflation to moderate from September onwards.

The RBI Governor said that while citing a fall in the prices of vegetables like tomatoes, restrictions imposed on the export of non-basmati rice and cut in the prices of domestic LPG cylinders.

Das was addressing a programme at Devi Ahilya University here.

“We expect overall inflation to start moderating from September onwards. August inflation will be again very high, but we expect from September onwards inflation to go down,” he said.

Das said that the prices of tomatoes have already fallen and retail prices of other vegetables are also expected to come down from this month.

The RBI Governor said the government has taken several steps to ensure the supply of tomatoes and other items of common need to the people at affordable prices.

“The restrictions have been imposed on the export of non-basmati rice. The prices of domestic LPG cylinders have been cut recently,” he said.

According to government data, retail inflation had gone up to 7.44 per cent in July, which was its highest level in the last 15 months.

Das said that the rate of (retail) inflation was at a very high level in July.

“Everyone was surprised by this. But mainly due to high prices of tomatoes and other vegetables, we were expecting that it would be substantially higher in July,” he said.

Straighter Run-Up, Aggressive Rhythm Key To My ODI Success: Kuldeep Yadav

Left-arm wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav believes tweaks in his technique, including a straighter run-up and an aggressive rhythm, has helped him to improve his bowling and achieve success in ODI cricket. The 28-year-old has taken 27 wickets from 14 matches this year, the highest by an Indian bowler in ODIs. “After the (knee) surgery (last year), my run-up has become much straighter, and rhythm has become aggressive. My hand used to fall over but that has been controlled and now it (hand) is facing the batsman,” said Kuldeep in the post-match press conference.

Kuldeep said he had worked on spin and drift post his surgery to improve his efficiency.

“I exerted care not to lose my spin and drift without losing my pace. If a leg-spinner lands the ball on a good length, he can pick up wickets more regularly and loose balls can be reduced. You can be consistent,” he added.

Kuldeep said he worked with NCA physio Ashish Koushik post his surgery to reduce the burden on his knee while landing in the crease.

“I did not want to lose my zip, nip or drift. After surgery I went for a three-month recuperation at NCA and physio Ashish Koushik said I had to reduce the load on my knee. So, I worked to make my rhythm faster,” he said.

However, Kuldeep said it took him some time to make the remodelled action work at the top level cricket.

“I tried the new action in a practice game in Kanpur. The batsmen were struggling to face me. But even in the IPL and during the tour of the West Indies I was struggling with it (action).

“It took some 6-7 matches for me to make work at this level,” said Kuldeep.

‘Performing against a top opposition like Pakistan motivates me’

His (5/25) five-wicket haul helped India outclass Pakistan by a massive 228-run margin and Kuldeep said he will always remember this effort as it came against a top opposition.

“I will always remember that I picked up five wickets against Pakistan when I retire. It is a big thing for me because Pakistan players can play spin well. If you perform against a side that plays spin well in the subcontinent, it motivates you,” said he said.
