Russian-Held Regions In Ukraine Express Their Desire To Join Moscow: Putin

Russian-Held Regions In Ukraine Express Their Desire To Join Moscow: Putin

Putin said that residents of Moscow-held regions in Ukraine expressed their desire to be part of Russia.

Moscow:

Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin said early on Saturday that residents of Moscow-held regions in Ukraine expressed their desire to be part of Russia in recent local elections, reaffirming referendums last year that Western countries denounced as illegal.

In a video address released on the one-year anniversary of Russia’s controversial announcement it was annexing four parts of Ukraine, Putin said the choice to join Russia was reinforced by this month’s local elections that returned officials supporting Russia’s annexation.

“Just as a year ago in the historic referendums, people again expressed and confirmed their will to be with Russia and supported their countrymen who, through their labour and real actions, proved worthy of the people’s trust,” he said in a video of just over four minutes issued at midnight.

Putin reiterated his stance that Russia’s February 2022 invasion of Ukraine saved people from nationalist leaders in Kyiv who had unleashed a “full-scale civil war” and “terror against those who think differently”.

On Sept. 30, 2022, parts of four Ukrainian regions — Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia — were formally incorporated into Russia after referendums that Moscow said returned overwhelming majorities in favour.

Western countries dismissed the outcomes as meaningless and illegal annexation, underpinned by mass coercion of voters.

Russian forces do not control any of the regions in full.

Ukrainian forces, helped by Western arms, withstood initial Russian attempts to advance on Kyiv and the war shifted to areas held by Russia in the east and south. Ukrainian forces in June launched a counteroffensive to recapture those areas.

Cop Offers To Pay For Ujjain Rape Survivor's Education, Health Expenses

There has been one arrest in the horrific rape case.

Ujjain (Madhya Pradesh):

A Madhya Pradesh police official who was involved in the investigation into the rape case of a minor girl in Ujjain has come forward to take responsibility of the girl’s medical treatment, education and marriage.

“I have said that I will take care of the girl’s treatment, education and her marriage. Many other people have also come forward for this initiative. I am quite hopeful that all the responsibilities will be fulfilled soon. After she is discharged from hospital, I will also admit her to another hospital for further treatment,” the investigating officer and Mahakal police station in-charge Ajay Verma told ANI.

“I always try to give back to society as it made me,” he said.

The shocking incident was reported within the jurisdiction of the Mahakal police station on September 25 after which a case was registered on medical grounds and a Special Investigation Team (SIT) was formed for further investigation.

The police launched a probe and collected all available technical evidence based on which an auto driver was taken into custody. The autorickshaw driver identified as Rakesh Malviya has been charged with suppressing evidence.

Ujjain Superintendent of Police (SP) Sachin Sharma said, “During Malviya’s questioning, some crucial facts came to light. Notably, a bloodstain was found in the backseat of the auto rickshaw. The auto driver confessed that he was with the girl at the time of the incident. Even after this, we continued our investigation, and we have managed to determine that the girl is from Satna.”

Later on Thursday, the police arrested the main accused Bharat Soni, a resident of Ujjain who is also an auto driver and registered a case against him under IPC section 376 and the POCSO Act.

NC leader Omar Abdullah criticises govt over Eid Milad-un Nabi holiday

NC leader Omar Abdullah criticises govt over Eid Milad-un Nabi holiday

Srinagar: National Conference leader Omar Abdullah Friday criticised the Jammu and Kashmir government’s decision to declare Eid Milad-un Nabi holiday a day earlier.

Abdullah, who offered the Friday congregational prayers at the Hazratbal shrine which houses the relics of the Prophet of Islam, said it was an unfortunate decision.

Eid Milad-un-Nabi is celebrated as the birthday of Prophet Mohammad.

“I want to greet the people on this occasion. But, I have a grudge against the government. I do not understand how they make a decision sitting inside an office.

The sacred day is today, why was the holiday declared yesterday? What is the meaning of declaring a holiday a day before, when all of us knew that the sacred day was today,” Abdullah told reporters after the prayers.

The NC vice president asked the government to do the same for any other religious occasion.

“Let them declare a holiday on Diwali a day before. These things prove that they do not care about our sentiments. And, when we complain about these things, they remove our reels from channels rather than analysing them and taking corrective measures.

“Let them remove the reels, but they cannot hide the reality. They wanted to make their job easier by declaring a holiday a day earlier. This is very unfortunate. Such things are not good,” he said.

The former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister said he prayed for peace and calm, and for the improvement in the situation in J-K.

“I also prayed for success in the case we fought in the Supreme Court,” he said, referring to the challenge put up by the party and others against the abrogation of Article 370.

Asked about the delay in conducting the assembly elections in J-K, Abdullah said the government is waiting to find courage to hold the election.

In Ujjain Rape Case, Those Who Didn't Help Teen May Face Charges: Police

In Ujjain Rape Case, Those Who Didn't Help Teen May Face Charges: Police

New Delhi:

Those who did not help a 15-year-old girl in Ujjain – who had been raped and left half-naked and bleeding, and went door-to-door begging for help – may be charged under child sex abuse laws, a senior Madhya Pradesh police officer told NDTV on Friday. They may face action under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act for ‘failing to report or register the commission’ of a crime.

Jayant Singh Rathore, an Additional Superintendent of Police in Ujjain, said that at least one such individual had been identified – an auto rickshaw driver who “knowingly did not inform the police”.

“Action has been taken against him. CCTV footage will be studied. If more people are found, and it is clear they did not help (the girl) or did not inform the police, we will take legal action,” he said.

The auto-rickshaw driver has been identified as Rakesh Malviya. Police said he ferried the young girl in his vehicle – they found blood stains on the seat – but did not tell the police of her condition.

The question now is – will others who similarly refused to help her also face police action? Will they act against the people who saw and ignored a young girl bleeding and in clear distress?

“Some Gave Her Rs 50, Some Rs 100”: Cop’s Shocker

NDTV earlier reported on CCTV footage of a man shooing the bleeding girl away; the heart-breaking clip showed him leaning nonchalantly against his front door and refusing to help.

Police review of that footage showed others had been equally heartless, but Ujjain top cop Sachin Sharma disagreed with the statement that no one helped the girl.

“We traced the video and questioned people in the area. When we found her, she had Rs 120 people from the locality gave her… people may have had reservations, but financially they tried.”

Mr Sharma also told NDTV, “She crossed a toll booth on the way. The staff there gave her money and some clothes. At least seven-eight people tried to help.”

None of those, however, took her in off the streets and called the police. Not till she came upon a priest who protected her and alerted the authorities.

Good Samaritans In Police Too

Fortunately for the young girl, there were still some people willing to help. Apart from the priest, two policemen donated blood and another said he wants to sponsor her education and healthcare.

“We were on duty for the President’s visit… we came forward and reached the hospital to donate blood,” Jaipal Goyal, one of the policemen, said.

Accused’s Father Wants Death Penalty

Meanwhile, the father of the main accused – Bharat Soni – has said his son must be punished and asked “what other punishment would there be other than death?” “This is very wrong. He should be punished… I would have killed him,” Raja Soni told NDTV.

The main accused is also an auto-rickshaw driver and was caught after an extensive investigation that included scanning through footage from nearly 700 CCTV feeds. “30-35 people were engaged. No one slept for three-four days,” Ajay Verma, a senior police officer, told NDTV.

Once caught, he was taken to where he allegedly raped the girl. There, however, he tried to escape but was run down by two police officers. All three men suffered injuries in the fight that followed.

“Today, we reached the spot to… recover the clothes worn by the girl. Sensing an opportunity, Bharat Soni tried to escape. Police personnel chased and caught him. During this, he fell on a cemented road, injuring his arms and legs,” another police officer told reporters.

“Daughter Of Madhya Pradesh”

Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan – who faces an Assembly election in November – said his government will ensure the accused is severely punished.

“The victim is the daughter of Madhya Pradesh. We will take care of her in every way. She is my daughter, as well as the state’s daughter and we will ensure that the accused gets stringent punishment,” he declared.

Shot Putter Kiran Baliyan Wins India's First Athletics Medal With Bronze

Kiran Baliyan became the first Indian woman to win an Asian Games medal in shot put event in 72 years as she picked up a bronze on the opening day of competitions in Hangzhou on Friday. The 24-year-old Baliyan hurled the iron ball to a distance of 17.36m in her third attempt for her best effort of the day to open India’s medal account. Baliyan, thus, became only the second Indian to win a medal in women’s shot put in Asian Games after Barbara Webster, an Anglo-Indian from then Bombay, won a bronze in the inaugural edition in New Delhi in 1951.

(Medals Tally | Asian Games 2023 Full Schedule)

Baliyan has a season’s as well as personal best of 17.92m which she had produced while finishing second in the Indian Grand Prix 5 in Chandigarh on September 10.

“I did not know the history (first Indian woman shot putter to win an Asian Games medal after 1951). My focus was to produce my best performance. I could not do that and I am not happy with my performance. But I won a medal, so I am very happy,” she said later.

Baliyan, daughter of a traffic police head constable in Meerut, was an accidental shot putter as her name was entered in a junior tournament by mistake nine years ago.

The other Indian in the fray, Manpreet Kaur finished fifth with a best throw of 16.25m.

In women’s 400m race, Himanshi Malik ran an excruciatingly slow race for the second time in less than three weeks as she finished fifth in her heat and failed to qualify for the finals.

The 21-year-old Malik clocked 57.82 seconds in heat number three, even worse than the 57.59 second effort at the Indian Grand Prix 5 in Chandigarh on September 10.

She ran the race at the ‘Big Lotus’ stadium here with a knee brace, giving credence to the murmur that she was injured and could be left out of the Asian Games team.

Her timing on the opening day of athletics competition was more than six minutes outside her season’s as well as personal best of 51.76 seconds which she had clocked while finishing second in the National Inter-State Championships in June.

Interestingly, in a video uploaded by the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) earlier in the day, Malik said she was ready for the race.

“I am running my 400m race in the Asian Games today and hopefully I will do well,” she said in the video.

The other Indian in the fray, Aishwraya Mishra qualified for the final round after finishing second in heat number one with a season’s best time of 52.73 seconds.

In the men’s 400m race, Muhammed Ajmal qualified for the finals after finishing second in his heat with a time of 45.76 seconds while Muhammed Anas Yahiya failed to make the grade after clocking 46.29 for a third-place finish in his heat.

The first two in each heat and the next two fastest across the three heats advance to the final.

In the women’s hammer throw final, Tanya Chaudhary and Rachna Kumari finished seventh and ninth with performances of 60.50m and 58.13m respectively.

In the morning, national record holder Priyanka Goswami finished fifth in women’s 20km race walk event with a time of 1 hour 43 minute 7 seconds, well outside her season’s best of 1:28:50 and personal best of 1:28:45.

In the men’s 20km event, Vikash Singh, who was drafted in the team due to injury to national record holder Akshdeep Singh, also finished fifth, clocking 1:27:33. He has a season’s as well as personal best of 1:20:05.

The other Indian in the fray, Sandeep Singh was disqualified during the race.

India men lose to China in basketball

The Indian men’s team on Friday went down fighting 15-18 against China in a 3×3 basketball group stage game, while the women’s side beat Mongolia in 5×5 event in the Asian Games. India managed to finish second in Pool C and will compete in the quarterfinal playoff against Iran on Saturday.

Only the top team from each group is granted a direct berth in the quarterfinals.

The loss to hosts and last edition’s gold medallist China was India’s maiden defeat, who had previously won against Malaysia (20-16) and Macau (21-12).

In Shaoxing, India’s women’s side did well to get the better of Mongolia in a preliminary round Group A 5×5 match. The Indians, who were made to work hard for their win by the Mongolian side, emerged victorious by a margin of 68-62.

The women’s side had earlier recorded a 66-46 win over Indonesia in their first match.

Indian Women’s team will play its final group stage game against China on Sunday, with the top eight teams from the three groups of 12 sides each making it to the quarterfinals.

Elon Musk's X Corp In Another Legal Fight Over Unpaid Rent

Elon Musk’s X has faced an array of legal actions over unpaid rent.

San Francisco:

Elon Musk’s X Corp, facing its own legal claims over unpaid rent, has sued a financial services company to recoup more than $713,500 in allegedly past due rent and other fees stemming from a sublease agreement for San Francisco office space.

X, formerly known as Twitter, sued Atlas Exploration in San Francisco Superior Court on Thursday in a complaint alleging breach of contract.

Atlas, formerly Point Up Inc, markets itself as “an invite-only charge card” that gives members access to exclusive dining and travel.

Atlas and X entered a sublease agreement for space at 650 California Street in San Francisco’s financial district in April 2021, the lawsuit said. The complaint said Atlas sought last year to terminate the sublease early.

X said Atlas owes it more than $340,263 for September to November rent from last year. X also accused Atlas of failing to pay any of its early-termination fee.

An attorney who has represented Atlas in the dispute, Kevin Hill, did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Friday.

Hill said in a letter to X in April the company was unfairly demanding rent for certain months last year after Atlas had already made payments on its new office space.

X has faced an array of legal actions over unpaid rent and other invoices following Musk’s $44 billion buyout last October.

In one case, the owner of X’s main office at 1355 Market Street in San Francisco sued X for more than $3.1 million in unpaid rent. X is disputing the claims in court.

Britain’s Crown Estate, which manages the property portfolio belonging to the monarchy, in January filed claims against X over alleged unpaid rent on its London headquarters.

Separately, X faces myriad employee lawsuits challenging terminations, unpaid severance and other benefits.

A lawyer for X, Jonathan Hawk, did not immediately respond to a message seeking comment. A representative from X had no immediate comment.

The case is X Corp v Atlas Exploration Inc, San Francisco Superior Court, No. CGC-23-609391.
