Illicit trade casts shadow on India’s progress towards achieving $5trn economy: Anurag Thakur

New Delhi: Anurag Thakur, Minister for Information & Broadcasting and Youth Affairs & Sports said on Friday said that the surge in illicit trade is a troubling consequence of globalisation which casts a shadow on our progress toward achieving 5 trillion-dollar economy.

“Illicit trade, whether conducted through activities like smuggling, counterfeiting, or tax evasion, exacts a considerable socio-economic toll. It not only hinders our advancement but also drives up expenses, pushing these crucial goals even further from our reach,” he added.

Addressing the 9th edition of FICCI CASCADE’s ‘MASCRADE 2023’, Thakur said that by addressing the nexus between illicit trade, organised crime and terrorism, we not only protect our economy but also contribute to a safer and more peaceful world.

“The fight against illicit trade is not just an economic battle; it is a battle for peace, stability, and the future of our world,” he highlighted.

Speaking on the various initiatives by the government, Thakur said, “We have been enacting laws that not only align with our international commitments but also exhibit a progressive outlook. However, given the intricate and alarming expansion of illicit trade, it underscores the need for enhanced intergovernmental collaborations and public-private partnerships to formulate a comprehensive strategy.”

The Minister said that illicit trade is a multi-billion-dollar business with severe economic, social, and environmental impacts, which are especially accentuated during periods of economic downturn.

He said that illicit trade has risen steadily in recent years and the effects of illicit trade are particularly damaging for developing economies.

“It is our duty to safeguard our citizens and the world from these threats. To do so, we must strengthen our law enforcement agencies, enhance international cooperation, and enact stringent measures to combat illicit trade at its roots,” he added.

Thakur said that with India’s ascent as a formidable global economic force, the imperative of safeguarding the rights of businesses through robust regulations and their vigilant enforcement becomes increasingly intertwined with our nation’s burgeoning global influence.

“The intertwined relationship between illicit trade, organised crime and terrorism poses a clear and present danger to global security, making it imperative that we confront this issue head-on.”

“Combating the pervasive social and economic detriments inflicted by illicit trade now stands as an imperative, reflecting India’s steadfast commitment to preserving its hard-earned economic strength and securing a prosperous future,” he added.

Anil Rajput, Chairman, FICCI CASCADE, said: “Illicit trade has been seen mostly from the prism of loss to the exchequer. However, it has many more facets that impact our society. This unscrupulous global business has its tentacles reaching far and wide and compromises the safety and security of nations due to their sinister linkages with organized crime networks and terror financing.”

“PM Modi has been underscoring the need to eliminate the root cause for terror funding. A clear mandate from the highest office of the government makes it evident that India is focused in building a global momentum against terror funding by eradicating the streams of finance,” he added.

Highlighting that India is already a powerhouse and one of the world’s most dynamic consumption environments, Rajput said that we must work concertedly to ensure that illicit trade does not dent our growth trajectory.

“While action is being taken to refine policy frameworks, strengthen cooperation and administer stricter enforcement, the role of our citizenry to ensure that only legal products are consumed holds great significance and to achieve this awareness will be key. For this a robust mass awareness generation strategy is imperative,” he added.

Justice KV Viswanathan, Judge, Supreme Court of India, during the Valedictory Address said: “One suggestion for policymakers to make counterfeiting less attractive is they should adopt suitable tax measures for genuine products. If you make counterfeiting less attractive in terms of price by having a rational tax structure, it could be a serious disincentive for them to resort to this. We need to ensure that all stakeholders come together to tackle this issue. Judiciary can come in to play a stellar role but it can only be one of the components.”

Anil Sinha, Former Director, CBI and Think Tank Member, FICCI CASCADE also shared his perspective on the impact of illicit trade and emphasised on the need to work together to fight the menace of illicit trade.

'Unlucky' Sergio Ramos Own Goal Helps Barcelona beat Sevilla

Real Madrid legend Sergio Ramos‘s own goal handed his old enemy Barcelona a narrow 1-0 win over Sevilla on Friday in La Liga, taking the Catalans top of the table. Veteran centre-back Ramos deflected Lamine Yamal‘s header into his own net in the 76th minute to break the deadlock in a tight clash. The 37-year-old said this week he had planned a special goal celebration if he scored against Barca after his summer return to Spain from Paris Saint-Germain, but putting through his own net was not part of the plan.

“Ramos is a spectacular defender, today he had the misfortune of scoring an own goal but he had a good game,” Barcelona coach Xavi told reporters.

“It was unlucky for him but for us it was good.”

He continued: “Sergio grows in these atmospheres, it’s an unfortunate goal, it hits him and bounces in.”

Barcelona’s victory helped the Catalans overtake Girona at the top of the table, with their neighbours hosting third-place Real Madrid on Saturday.

Xavi’s side were leapfrogged by Girona and Madrid after they drew at Mallorca on Tuesday.

“Tomorrow I have a birthday party, I can’t watch the game, imagine that. I’ll follow it but I can’t watch, it’s a pity – may the best team win,” said Xavi.

“The only thing that we can control was today, we feel good about it, we deserved more goals and we had a great game against a great team.”

Before the game Sevilla caused a stir by announcing their directors would not attend the traditional lunch or sit in the presidential box in protest at Barcelona’s involvement in the refereeing corruption scandal.

The Catalan club and some of their former directors were charged with bribery on Thursday.

Xavi started winger Raphinha in attacking midfield with Lamine Yamal on the flank, looking for more dynamism behind striker Robert Lewandowski.

Joao Felix crashed a shot off the crossbar after a fine run by Joao Cancelo as Barcelona made the early running, but Sevilla were sharp on the counter-attack.

Marc-Andre ter Stegen clawed away an effort from former Barcelona midfielder Ivan Rakitic and a shot by Dodi Lukebakio, while Gavi superbly blocked with his chest to foil Lucas Ocampos.

Unlikely source

Xavi’s experiment with Raphinha was cut short when the Brazilian went down injured and he was replaced by La Masia graduate Fermin Lopez, who rescued Barcelona at Mallorca with a late strike.

The midfielder was quickly teed up by 16-year-old starlet Yamal but could only manage a soft shot, his one disappointing moment on an otherwise impressive outing.

Gavi’s shot was deflected narrowly over as Barcelona turned the screw in search of the opening goal.

Eventually it came, from an unlikely source, with Ramos inadvertently knocking Yamal’s header back into the danger area past Orjan Nyland.

Ramos’s touches has been greeted by whistles by Barcelona fans for his history in the Spanish capital, which turned to ironic cheers as his own goal was replayed on the big screen at the Olympic Stadium.

At the age of nine Yamal had stood beside Ramos as a Barcelona mascot in 2016 when the centre-back captained Real Madrid in a Clasico.

Until his own goal, Ramos had played well and helped keep Barcelona at bay.

The defender made a fine block to foil Lewandowski in stoppage time, but by then the damage was done.

“In that move Ramos was defending well, he had bad luck,” said Sevilla coach Jose Luis Mendilibar.

“The ball hit him and he didn’t have time to react how he wanted.”

1 Killed, 1 Injured After Whale Strikes Boat Off Australia

Water Police said whale had breached near or possibly onto small “run-about” boat. (Representational)

Sydney, Australia:

A whale struck a boat off the coast of eastern Australia on Saturday morning, killing one man and injuring another.

The two men were on the boat when it was hit and flipped at about 6 am local time (2000 GMT) in the waters off La Perouse, 14 kilometres (nine miles) southeast of Sydney, police said.

The first man was pulled from the water unconscious and died at the scene. The second was treated by paramedics and is in stable condition in hospital.

The collision was “a tragic accident”, Water Police acting superintendent Siobhan Munro said in comments reported by public broadcaster ABC.

She said the whale had breached near or possibly onto the small “run-about” boat.

“Right now there are lots of whales out there and there are lots of examples of whales breaching next to boats,” she added.

It comes less than two weeks after a four-metre humpback whale was struck in the head by a boat propeller off the coast of Western Australia.

Manipur Governor Visits Families Of Youths Killed After Being Kidnapped

Manipur Violence: Over 150 have died and thousands were displaced since the violence began in Manipur.

Imphal:

Manipur Governor Anusuiya Uikey on Friday visited the family members of two youths who were killed after being allegedly kidnapped, leading to violent protests in the northeastern state.

The governor met the family members of the two students at their respective residences in Imphal West district, a statement issued by the Raj Bhavan said.

A fresh bout of violence broke out in the state capital Imphal on Tuesday, a day after photos of the bodies of the two youths, who went missing in July, went viral on social media.

“The governor consoled the parents of the two students and gave water to the mothers who were on fast for many days, ” the Raj Bhavan statement said.

Ms Uikey expressed her pain and condolences to the bereaved families.

The governor assured them that action would be taken against the perpetrators as per the law.

Ms Uikey was also informed “by the local people on the extensive use of force by the security personnel on the students” who launched protests on Tuesday against the killing of the two youths.

A CBI team is currently investigating the killing of the two students – a man and a girl- in the northeastern state which has been witnessing ethnic strife for nearly five months.

The state government on Thursday constituted a committee to verify complaints of alleged use of excessive force on protesters, mainly students, by security forces here over the last two days, an official said.

While briefing the media, Ms Uikey appealed to all the parents to “advise the students for peaceful forms of agitation and not to take law in their hands as injuries from such agitations will have a lasting impact on the future of the students”, the Raj Bhavan statement said.

Later, in the evening, the governor also visited the injured students during the protests and met their parents at Shija Hospital, Langol. She handed over some financial assistance to them.

The governor wished them a speedy recovery and assured them of the required medical assistance.

Peddha Kapu 1 Review: A small film with strong characters and top performers

Peddha Kapu 1 is a kind of reincarnation of the writer and director Srikanth Addala. Yes, you read it right.

Hyderabad: Peddha Kapu 1 is a kind of reincarnation of the writer and director Srikanth Addala. Yes, you read it right. We all know Srikanth Addala as a soft storyteller, but in Peddha Kapu 1, the director showcases his raw characters and rugged story. Peddha Kapu 1 is released in theatres today, and here is our review of the film.

Peddha Kapu 1 stars Virat Karna as the lead actor. Rao Ramesh, Aadukalam Naren, and Anasuya played the main roles. Mickey J. Meyer composed the music for the film. Dwaraka Creations produced it.

Peddha Kapu 1 is a fictional story set in the original times, the days when NTR founded the TDP party in 1982. The film opens with the same setup. The screenplay of Peddha Kapu 1 runs towards the rise of a youngster with the name Peddha Kapu, going against the two local political parties in a village. The rest of the film is about how Peddha Kapu takes control of village politics and gets noticed by the legendary NTR.

The beauty of Peddha Kapu 1 is its characters, created by Srikanth Addala. All the characters look so raw and intense in their emotional graphs. Credit goes to Srikanth Addala for writing the characters and their backstories so deeply. Peddha Kapu 1 is one such film in ages that showcases the strength and importance of every main character equally in the film apart from that of the hero.

Srikanth Addala also excelled in bringing out the best technical output in the making of the film. His style and tone of the films add a special touch to the output. Srikanth Addala’s vision enhanced the works of the cinematographer Chota K. Naidu and the editor Marthand K. Venkatesh. Mickey J. Meyer intensifies every dramatic and action scene with his background score. And of course, Peter Hein’s action composition will leave you in awe.

Here are a few scenes that Peddha Kapu 1 definitely needs to be watched out for. The opening scene of the actual story, where the TDP flag is mounted on a huge tree, all the episodes that show caste discrimination in detail, beautifully pictured A-rated violence and murder scenes, the inspirational rise of women in politics, revolutionary songs, and the interval and climax portions.

Virat Karna got a great launch with this film, and he proved his worth with a mature performance. Rao Ramesh is the show stealer in the entire film. One would definitely be mesmerised by his body language and expressions without uttering any dialogue. Anasuya and Naren are great in their roles. Srikanth Addala is a special package for the film with his mass transformation in acting.

Peddha Kapu 1 is definitely worth being on the list of the best political action drama movies in Telugu. There was Prasthanam once, there was Rangasthalam later, and today it is Peddha Kapu 1 that one shouldn’t miss watching in theatres despite looking at it as a small film.

Rajasthan CM Gehlot urges PM Modi to enact social security law at Centre

The chief minister said the opposition leaders in the poll-bound state are misleading people by calling the state’s welfare schemes ‘revadi’ (freebies).

Rajasthan CM Gehlot urges PM Modi to enact social security law at Centre

Jaipur: Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Friday appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to enact a social security law at the Centre and said India would become a “vishwaguru” or world leader only when starvation and malnutrition end in the country.

Addressing the second national conference of Rajasthan Nursing Council at the Birla Auditorium here, Gehlot said everyone in the nation should get social security along with health services and education, adding that there should be no shortage of water and electricity.

He added that India will become a global leader only when “hunger and malnutrition will end in our country”, asserting that “the ‘Right to Social Security Act’ should be implemented at the Centre.” Referring to other welfare schemes, including gas cylinders for Rs 500, 100 units of free electricity and Annapurna food kits for poor families, Gehlot said they were not needed if the right to social security was made a law in the country.

According to an official statement issued here, the chief minister said the state government is continuously making important decisions in the field of education and health.

“Unprecedented work has been done in the field of medicine and health in the last five years,” Gehlot said, adding that government medical and nursing colleges are being opened in all the districts of the state, while public health colleges in every division.

“All these decisions have paved the way for Mission-2030 to make the state the leader in the country,” he added.

The chief minister said the opposition leaders in the poll-bound state are misleading people by calling the state’s welfare schemes ‘revadi’ (freebies).

Gehlot said that the state government has been able to bring such schemes only because of its excellent financial management.

“We have given what the public needs. We have given good governance in every sector,” he added.

He said the Congress will come to power in Rajasthan once again.

“I can feel the mood of the public for the upcoming elections. I am confident that you all bring our government to power again,” said Gehlot.

The assembly elections are to be held in the state later this year.

After the conference, the chief minister laid the foundation stone for the construction of the North Block at the Government Secretariat here and addressed the swearing-in ceremony of the Rajasthan Secretariat Employees Union.

Heavy rains flood streets in New York's Hudson Valley

A sustained round of torrential downpours after a week of mostly steady rainfall triggered flash flooding in New York on Friday (September 29), disrupting subway service in the most populous US city, inundating basements and turning some streets into small lakes.

A flash flood warning was in effect for New York until 2:30 p.m. EDT, with as much as 6 inches (15 cm) of rain falling in some locations, including Brooklyn, lower Manhattan and John F. Kennedy International Airport in the borough of Queens, said the National Weather Service.

Across the region, another 2 to 3 inches (5 to 8 cm) could fall before the system pushed out to sea, and some locations could see even more, according to the service’s Weather Prediction Center.

The extreme rainfall prompted New York Governor Kathy Hochul to declare a state of emergency for New York City, Long Island, and the Hudson Valley, and some National Guard troops were deployed to assist in the response.

Flooding caused major disruptions to New York’s subway service and the Metro-North commuter rail service, according to the Metropolitan Transportation Agency, which operates both. Some subway lines were suspended entirely, and many stations were closed.

New York Mayor Eric Adams declared a state of emergency for the city.

Systems producing intense rainfalls such as Friday’s have become more common in many parts of the U.S., including the New York City area.

Global warming has produced more extreme weather patterns in many parts of the world, according to climate scientists.

The rain capped one of New York’s wettest Septembers on record, with 13.74 inches (34.9 cm) of rain falling during the month as of 11 a.m. on Friday, and more on the way, said a forecaster with the weather service’s office in the city. The all-time high was set in September 1882 when 16.82 inches (42.72 cm) of rain fell.

Friday’s deluge followed a bout of heavy downpours and unrelenting winds last weekend from the remnants of Tropical Storm Ophelia. That storm soaked New York City and caused widespread power outages in North Carolina, Virginia, Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

In New York, intermittent rain this week further saturated the ground, setting up conditions conducive to flash flooding.

Not Ashwin, Yuvraj Wanted This Star As Axar's Replacement In India's Squad

The Indian squad is packed with quality players but either wrist spinner Yuzvendra Chahal or Washington Sundar should have found place in the home team’s line-up, reckons 2011 World Cup hero Yuvraj Singh. All-rounder Axar Patel was ruled out of the global event due to quadriceps tear and the management replaced him with senior off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin. Ashwin was summoned for the ODI series against Australia and eventually he was included in the final 15-man squad as Chahal and Washington miss out.

“I personally feel the only miss in this side is Yuzvendra Chahal. I think the only aspect that is missing from this team is a leg-spinner,” Yuvraj told PTI in an exclusive interview.

“I was very keen to see Washington Sundar in the side if we are not picking up Yuzi. But maybe the team wanted an experienced bowler, so that is why I think they went with R Ashwin,” said one of India’s greatest ODI cricketers.

Yuvraj spoke on the sidelines of an event, organised by Vicks, to release the World Cup anthem.

The performance of Jasprit Bumrah will have a massive bearing on India’s campaign in the World Cup at home, felt former India batter.

Bumrah returned to the Indian side during the T20I series against Ireland recently after a long injury lay-off and he also produced intense efforts in the Asia Cup.

“Jasprit is a match-winner, like Zak (Zaheer Khan) did for us back in 2011. What makes Jasprit a threat is he has skill and pace. He is an asset to the team.

“To make a comeback from the back injury at this stage is quite big too. As a team you feel confident to have bowlers like that, they win you matches from any situation.” Yuvraj, who was the player of the tournament during the 2011 World Cup, was pleased to see the growing maturity of Bumrah as a cricketer. “Bumrah has matured in the last couple of years, he has captained India and has become a smart bowler. Rohit knows how to use him wisely, especially because he has captained Bumrah in the Mumbai Indians,” said Yuvraj.

“The advantage with Bumrah is that initially he can get wickets with pace but when he starts going for runs, his skillset will come into play. There will be days when you will win a game after scoring 300 or 350-plus but these kinds of bowlers like Bumrah are needed to defend scores like 250s and 260s,” he said.

The 41-year-old was also chuffed to see the form of India’s middle-order batters.

“It is a good thing that all our middle-order batters – KL (Rahul), Ishan (Kishan) and Shreyas Iyer – are in good form. But the team management needs to decide the 11 and combination ahead of the tournament that will give the team a settled look,” he said.

Yuvraj knows a thing or two about winning the World Cup as he was a part of India’s triumphant sides in 2007 (T20 WC) and 2011 (50-over WC).

He said India had started their preparation for the 2011 World Cup the moment Gary Kirsten joined the team as the head coach.

“We started planning for the World Cup from the day Gary came on board. The first step was to get to the No. 1 ranking in all formats – whether it is ODI cricket or Tests. When the World Cup came, we had a lot of players who were at the peak of their careers. The younger generation too had matured. So, it became a complete team effort,” he said.

On personal front, Yuvraj was battling injuries and other health issues, which was later diagnosed as cancer, ahead of the 2011 big bash.

So, how did he manage to rise above those obstacles? “I was battling injuries ahead of the World Cup…neck, fingers…and other health-related issues as I was not able to breathe properly. I had to put aside all of those things and concentrate on one goal, which is the World Cup.

“When you were playing in a physical state like that, you had to put the body on the line. I think to win a World Cup after 28 years, an effort like that was needed.” India had then won a 50-over World Cup, their second, after a gap of nearly three decades, and Yuvraj hoped that Rohit Sharma and his bunch would end India’s 12-year wait for a third trophy at home next month.

“I love these guys as I get along with every one of them and I have also played with some of them. I feel that Virat and Rohit deserve a World Cup. So, everyone needs to put their body on the line for such a big stage,” he said.

Yuvraj also advised the present bunch to stay away from distractions during the World Cup. “I would tell them to stay away from distractions for the next 40 or 45 days…media, friends and everything. They need to focus on the game exclusively. Sachin paaji (Tendulkar) used to tell us that,” he signed off.
