For The First Time in 50 Years, US Won't Have Any Panda. Here's Why

For The First Time in 50 Years, US Won't Have Any Panda. Here's Why

For all panda lovers in the US, there is sad news. The  National Zoo, in Washington DC, which has been the home to three giant pandas for 50 years, will soon send them back to China.

The three pandas are set to return in December this year following the end of a three-year-long agreement with China’s wildlife agency, reported Bloomberg.

With the ones in Washington DC gone, only four giant pandas will remain in the Atalanta Zoo which is expected to shift back by next year, unless both countries strike a new deal among themselves, the report added.

Chee Meng Tan, who is an associate professor at the University of Nottingham in Malaysia and studies panda diplomacy, told the Washington Post, “This is perhaps Beijing’s way of signalling to the West that they may not be very happy with how things are going.”

He added, “This may be one way of telling people that you’re not treating us very well, so maybe we’ll pull out our pandas.”

Before this, the pandas from San Diego and Memphis had left in 2019 and April 2023, respectively, the report added.

The first instance of China’s Panda Diplomacy can be dated back to 1941 but it wasn’t until President Nixon visited China in 1972 that the US were rewarded with any. After his visit, the US were gifted two pandas which were kept at the National Zoo in Washington DC, the report added.

Over the years, beyond political motives, the pandas – named Mei Xiang and Tian Tian – have also served the purpose of entertainment. Recently, their 3-year-old male cub, Xiao Qi Ji had also become a centre of attraction for the crowd of the zoo.

Some experts have also suggested that the decision to send back the pandas might not be solely political reasons. They have risen to the point that pandas are no longer under the classification of ‘Endangered Species’.

So, they feel, China is trying to establish their network of national parks and sanctuary. This may have added to the fact that they do not need to send the pandas abroad anymore to conserve and breed.

Hyderabad: The ruling Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) has come down heavily on the Congress party’s tactics of levying an ‘election tax’ on builders in Karnataka, saying that this was to fund the Congress unit in Telangana in the ensuing elections and stated that Telangana people could not be fooled by offering money.

Industries Minister and BRS working president KT Rama Rao on Saturday tweeted: “Apparently Karnataka’s newly elected Congress Government has started levying a “political election tax” of Rs.500 per square foot to Bengaluru builders to fund Telangana Congress… Old habits die hard. “No matter how much money they pump, people of Telangana can not be fooled. Say NO to SCAMGRESS in TS…” he added.

"The Indian Crowd Gave…": Rizwan's Special Praise For Fans In Hyderabad

Pakistan faced a five-wicket defeat against New Zealand in their ODI World Cup warm-up match in Hyderabad on Friday. Opting to bat first, Pakistan posted 345/5 in 50 overs with Mohammad Rizwan smashing 103 while skipper Babar Azam scoring 80 runs. Later, New Zealand chased down the target in just 43.4 overs as Rachin Ravindra playing a terrific knock of 97 runs. Apart from him, skipper Babar Azam also scored a half-century, who was playing his first match, since March.

Despite being on the losing side, the match turned out to be memorable one for Pakistan wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Rizwan, who scored a century in 93 balls. After the first innings of the match, Rizwan expressed gratitude towards the people of Hyderabad for giving a warm welcome to the team on their arrival.

“A hundred is a hundred, proud and happy of it. Scoring a century for Pakistan is always special. The Indian crowd gave us a lot of love at the airport itself, just like how our fans love us back in Pakistan. We were welcomed in India in a great way,” Rizwan said during the mid-innings.

Rizwan further spoke about his batting position in the team and stated that he can bat wherever the team needs him.

“In T20Is I open for Pakistan, in Tests I bat at 6-7 and in ODIs I bat at number 4, I play according to the team requirements. Saud Shakeel is in great form and he played a classy knock today. Hopefully he turns out to be a great player in the ODI format as well. I and Babar try to rotate the strike, we bat similarly, our communication is good and that helps us,” he added.

Talking about the match, Kane Williamson showed his class in his first competitive outing in six months while Rachin Ravindra sizzled at the top of the order as New Zealand gunned down a 346-run target.

Barring the openers, Pakistan batters including Mohammad Rizwan (103 retired hurt off 91), Babar Azam (80 off 84) and Saud Shaukeel (75 off 53) had a good hit in the middle, helping their team post a daunting 345 for five in 50 overs.

New Zealand cruised to the target in 43.4 overs with contributions from Ravindra (97 off 72), Williamson (54 off 50), Daryl Mitchell (59 retired hurt off 57) and Mark Chapman (65 not out off 41).

Sinsheim: Borussia Dortmund held on with 10 men to beat Hoffenheim 3-1 in the Bundesliga on Friday but it was another unconvincing win ahead of a potentially crucial Champions League game against AC Milan.

The win put Dortmund top of the table — though only until other teams play Saturday — but the game continued a pattern of Dortmund edging wins in tight games after giving its opponents plenty of chances.

Some Dortmund players were clearly frustrated as Ramy Bensebaini was sent off for a second booking after kicking the ball away at a routine throw-in in the 71st minute with the score 2-1. Marco Reus had scored Dortmund’s second goal but was later booked for throwing a water bottle onto the field from the bench.

Dortmund coach Edin Terzic acknowledged Thursday that his team was struggling to find its “magic” and key figures at Dortmund have spoken of needing to get over losing the Bundesliga title to Bayern Munich in the final minutes of last season.

Niclas Füllkrug opened the scoring in the 18th minute with his first goal for Dortmund since signing from Werder Bremen last month. The striker applied the finish after Hoffenheim’s American defender John Brooks failed to control a simple throw-in and gave the ball away to Julian Brandt, who played in Füllkrug.

Five minutes later, Dortmund defender Mats Hummels gave away a penalty for a lunging challenge on Anton Stach and Andrej Kramaric converted the spot kick.

Dortmund restored its lead deep into first-half stoppage time when Reus pounced to score after Hoffenheim goalkeeper Oliver Baumann deflected Donyell Malen’s cross into his path. Hoffenheim had chances to level the score but Dortmund’s Julian Ryerson scored a third deep into stoppage time after sprinting from inside his own half on the counterattack.

Dortmund hosts Milan on Wednesday in a game which could have an outsized effect on who qualifies from a competitive group. Dortmund lost its opening game 2-0 to Paris Saint-Germain and Milan is coming off a 0-0 draw with Newcastle.

The loss ended a four-game win streak for sixth-place Hoffenheim and its American coach Pellegrino Matarazzo.

"How Would Other Countries React If…": S Jaishankar On Canada Row

'How Would Other Countries React If...': S Jaishankar On Canada Row

S Jaishankar said that India does not require lessons from others on the concept of freedom of speech.

Washington:

Stating that India does not require lessons from others on the concept of freedom of speech, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar,in an apparent reference to Canada, said that freedom of expression should not extend to incitement of violence.

Addressing a press conference in Washington DC on Friday, Jaishankar said, “…I flagged here (in US), and I flagged this to the Canadians as well. We are a democracy. We don’t need to learn from other people what freedom of speech is about, but we can tell people this…we don’t think freedom of speech extends to incitement to violence. That to us, is the misuse of freedom, that’s not defence of freedom”.

He further posed a question, asking how other countries would react if they were in India’s position, with their diplomats, embassies, and citizens facing intimidation.

“How would you react if you were in my shoes? If it was your diplomats, your embassy, your people, what would be your reaction?” he added.

On being asked about Indian concerns regarding the attack on Indian consulate in San Francisco in July this year, the EAM said that the issue was raised during his visit to the US and described it as an ongoing discussion.

“Yes, of course we raised, it. What is the status…it’s an ongoing conversation…Yes, I did spend some time on it…Yes, we discussed other things…Our relationship has many dimensions, many areas of cooperation. When we look at the world, there are areas we have convergences, and intersections of interest where we work very closely together, we are doing all of that,” Mr Jaishankar said.

He added, “Look, I want to be fair. If something is discussed, I am transparent about it. I have no problem saying yes we discussed it. I don’t want you to think that in the India-US relationship, there is only one issue. I would say yes, it’s an ongoing conversation”.

In July this year, a group of pro-Khalistan supporters allegedly attempted to set fire to the Consulate in San Francisco. There was no major damage nor any injuries and police were carrying out an investigation into the incident.

Following the incident, the US strongly condemned the reported vandalism and attempted arson by pro-Khalistan supporters against the Indian Consulate in San Francisco.
