Table Tennis: Manika Batra, Manush-Manav Pair Bow Out Of Asian Games

Commonwealth Games gold medallist Manika Batra produced an error-filled game to get knocked out in the quarterfinals of the women’s singles table tennis competition at the Asian Games in  Hangzhou on Saturday. Manika went down against world No. 4 Yidi Wang of China 8-11, 12-10, 6-11, 4-11, 14-12, 5-11 and her defeat also marked the end of India’s campaign in the singles event at the Hangzhou Games. The ace Indian paddler lost the first game 8-11, as she showed a distinct weakness on her backhand.

Even when she won the second and fifth games, it was more about the Chinese player making unforced errors in her eagerness to close out the points.

The classic example came in the fifth game when the Chinese sprayed an easy forehand while leading 11-10, which allowed Manika to claw back.

But in the sixth game, Wang regained her focus and peppered Manika’s backhand with powerful shots that the latter failed to reply properly.

Manika tried to fight back with a couple of powerful forehands but Wang’s astonishing retrieving ability left the Indian frustrated.

Fittingly, a backhand error from Manika that brought the match to an end.

Wang’s laser-guided forehand found Manika fumbling as her backhand return sailed well wide of the table.

Earlier, India’s men’s double pair of Manush Shah and Manav Thakkar also bowed out in the quarterfinals.

They were beaten by South Korean pair Woojin Jang and Jonghoon Lim 8-11, 11-7, 10-12, 11-6, 9-11 in the last eight.

The Indians were leading 6-2 in the fifth game which later transpired to 9-9, but they squandered the chances to go down against the Koreans.

“We fought really well. We took the game to 9-9 in the last set. We were very close to winning but we have to take the learnings and move forward,” said Manush after the defeat.

On the experience of playing against the World No. 1 Korean pair, Manush said: “They are probably the toughest opponents. We had some strategies and moves that we wanted to execute, and which we did. But in the end, we couldn’t prevail.” Later in the day, India’s Sutirtha Mukherjee and Aihika Mukherjee will face China’s Meng Chen and Yidi Wang in the women’s doubles quarterfinals.

12-hour bandh called by Tripura’s main opposition party the Tipra Motha affected normal life in the tribal areas of northeastern state

Agartala: The 12-hour bandh called by Tripura’s main opposition party the Tipra Motha affected normal life in the tribal areas of northeastern state on Saturday.

The Tipra Motha which controls the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) had called the bandh demanding an early constitutional solution to the problems of the indigenous people.

All offices, educational institutes and shops in the TTAADC areas were closed while the vehicles were off the roads including Assam-Agartala national highway as bandh supporters put up road blockades in several key locations.

Train services were affected while long-distance buses were off the roads. However, flights operated normally from Agartala.

In Agartala and other non-tribal areas of the state shops, markets and offices were open.

“The bandh is peaceful in the autonomous district council areas with bandh supporters staging road blockades in 70/80 locations amidst tight security. There has been no report of any violence till the report last came in”, Assistant Inspector General (AIG), Law & Order, Jyotishman Das Chowdhury told PTI.

“The 12-hour bandh in the autonomous district council has been successful and peaceful. The road connectivity came to a grinding halt in non-tribal council areas too. No train was allowed to cross the autonomous district council areas”, senior Tipra Motha leader Jagadish Debbarma told reporters at Chandrasadu Para in West Tripura district.

Debbarma who is the chairman of TTAADC said the Tipra Motha called the bandh to put pressure on the Centre for an early constitutional solution to the problems of indigenous people.

“We want the Centre to form Greater Tipraland by inclusion of TTAADC areas as well as indigenous people living in non-TTAADC areas for survival of the native tribes of the northeastern state”, he added.

"Must Talk To Each Other To Resolve": S Jaishankar Amid Row With Canada

'Must Talk To Each Other To Resolve Issue': S Jaishankar Amid Row With Canada

S Jaishankar said if there is a requirement for India to look at something, the country is open to it.

Washington:

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has said India and Canada should talk to each other to resolve their differences over the death of a Khalistani separatist, but the larger issue of the Canadian government’s “permissiveness” to terrorism, extremism and violence must be flagged and addressed.

During an interaction with Indian journalists here on Friday, he said India was ready to look into the information related to Canada’s allegations of the “potential” involvement of Indian agents in the killing of Khalistani extremist Hardeep Singh Nijjar on June 18 in British Columbia.

“The issue is as follows, which is that the Canadians have made some allegations. We have pointed out to them that this is not the government of India’s policy, but if they are prepared to share with us specifics and anything relevant, we are also open to looking at it. So in that sense, that’s where the matter stands,” Mr Jaishankar said.

“But what we do not want to see is an incident treated in isolation because then that somewhere does not convey the right picture,” he said.

“Let’s not normalise what is happening in Canada. What is happening in Canada, had it happened anywhere else, do you think the world would’ve taken it with equanimity?” he asked.

S Jaishankar said India has had an ongoing problem with Canada and its government for some years now, and the problem really revolves around the “permissiveness” regarding terrorism, extremism, and violence.

“This permissiveness is also reflected in the fact that some important extradition requests have not been responded to from their side, in the fact that there are individuals and organisations who are clearly involved with violence and illegal activities in India who themselves declared it. I mean, it is not a secret that they continue to carry on with their activities in Canada,” he said.

Mr Jaishankar said one of the problems is that no incident is isolated and in totality, as there is a context for everything.

“There are multiple problems out there. So, I guess in the case of individual incidents, the concerned governments will have to talk to each other and see how they sort of take it forward,” he said.

“But there is a larger issue. And I think it’s important that the larger issue should be flagged. The larger issue is this permissiveness that I have spoken about,” he said.

He said he discussed the ongoing diplomatic row between India and Canada with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan.

“Most important, the fact that our diplomatic missions and our diplomatic personnel have been consistently and continuously intimidated in Canada to a point where today it is not safe for them really to carry on with their work.

“The fact that we’ve had to temporarily suspend our visa operations, it’s not something we would’ve liked to do. It is just that they made it very difficult for us to operate those services,” Mr Jaishankar said.

Tensions flared between India and Canada following Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s explosive allegations of the “potential” involvement of Indian agents in the killing of Nijjar on his country’s soil. India had designated Nijjar as a terrorist in 2020.

India angrily rejected the allegations as “absurd” and “motivated” and expelled a senior Canadian diplomat in a tit-for-tat move to Ottawa’s expulsion of an Indian official over the case.

Earlier in the day, Mr Blinken told reporters he hoped that this issue would be resolved by Canada and India.

“We are very concerned about the allegations that have been raised by Canada, by Prime Minister Trudeau,” he said.

“We have been in close contact with Canada about that. And at the same time, we have engaged with the Indian government and urged them to work with Canada on an investigation, and I had the opportunity to do so again in my meeting yesterday with Foreign Minister Jaishankar,” Mr Blinken said.

“Those responsible need to be held accountable, and we hope that our friends in both Canada and India will work together to resolve this matter,” he said.

When asked if there is a deadlock between India and Canada on resolving the issue, S Jaishankar said: “I don’t know if I would use the term deadlock.” He said India’s point is that today there is a climate of violence and an atmosphere of intimidation.

“Just think about it. We’ve had smoke bombs thrown at the mission. We’ve had our consulates, violence in front of them. Individuals have been targeted and intimidated. There are posters put up about people,” he said.

“So tell me, do you consider this normal? Would, I mean for a moment, okay, this is about us. If this had happened to any other country, how would they react to it? I think it’s a reasonable question to ask.”

Mr Jaishankar said it is necessary to call out what is happening in Canada.

He also asserted that it was not acceptable to make threats and intimidate diplomats in the name of freedom of speech.

“We don’t need to learn from other people what freedom of speech is about. But we can tell people this. We don’t think freedom of speech extends to incitement, to violence. That to us is a misuse of freedom,” Mr Jaishankar said.

“It’s not a defence of freedom. I always ask people one question, how would you react if you were in my shoes? If it was your diplomats, your embassies, your people, what would be your reaction?” he asked.

S Jaishankar said if there is a requirement for India to look at something, the country is open to it.

He said a lot of Americans are astonished if they are told what most Indians know, that there are people in Canada who are advocating violence and separatism.

“I suspect very few Americans notice. So in a way, a lot of what I said at the meetings I think was new to the Americans. When Americans look at Canada, they see something. When we in India, look at Canada, we see something else.”

“And that’s part of the problem. So it’s also important that we talk it out with the Americans. After all, they are very close to Canada. They are good friends of ours,” he said.

“So it’s important that they also have an accurate picture, that they have our point of view on this matter as well. I’m not pre-judging issues. I’m not taking absolutist positions. What we have taken is a very reasonable stance,” he added.

S Jaishankar said the entire debate should not focus only on issue one and not on issue two and the bigger picture, which has been going on for some time and which is a very serious picture.

“After all, I was thinking back, when was the last time that any of our missions was intimidated to a point where it could not continue with its normal function? I will really have to think back. And if someone says this could happen in a G-7 country, in a commonwealth country, it gives you a lot to think about,” Mr Jaishankar said.

India raises with UK denial of envoy’s entry into Scotland Gurdwara

India raises with UK denial of envoy’s entry into Scotland Gurdwara

New Delhi: India has raised with the United Kingdom foreign office and the police the incident in which its High Commissioner Vikram Doraiswami was prevented from entering a gurdwara in Scotland, according to government sources.

“Doraiswami was on Friday stopped by a few radicals from entering a gurdwara in Glasgow. The Indian High Commissioner decided to leave instead of getting into an argument,” as per the sources.

According to a purported video posted on the Instagram channel of ‘Sikh Youth UK’ a man reportedly a pro-Khalistani activist was seen blocking Doraiswami from entering the Glasgow gurdwara located on Albert Drive.

This comes amid a diplomatic row between India and Canada over the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Saturday has condemned the incident.

“I strongly condemn this (that Vikram Doraiswami was allegedly stopped from entering a gurdwara in Scotland). Anyone from any religion or community can come here (gurdwara). We are not that religion that believes in violence instead we are among those who are saviours of humanity. Sikhs are the saviours. PM Modi has praised the work of our community. Sikhs are represented everywhere in the world. The safest place for the Sikhs in the world is in India,” BJP leader Manjinder Singh Sirsa said.

The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has also condemned the action. SGPC General Secretary Grewal said that the UK Envoy should not have been stopped from entering the gurdwara and that gurdwaras are for every religion.

Meanwhile, in the purported video posted on social media by the ‘Sikh Youth UK’, a protestor is heard saying, “They are hurting Sikhs in Canada and other places, every Sikh should protest against any Indian Ambassador like we did here in Glasgow”. The ‘Sikh Youth UK’ claims that there is an ongoing ban on Indian officials visiting the gurdwara in their official capacities.

The video shows two men near the High Commissioner’s car in the parking area. One of them is seen attempting to open the car door, which has been locked from the inside.

The purported video then shows the high commissioner’s car leaving the gurdwara premises. The video then shows another man speaking to the camera that this is how any Indian ambassador or any Indian government official who visits the Gurdwara will be treated.

“We know what games they are playing, what’s happening in Canada. The Canadian PM has openly condemned India and expelled Indian diplomats,” he said.

Meanwhile, a formal reaction from the Indian High Commission in London and the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on the incident is awaited.

The UK incident comes amid a growing strain in India-Canada ties following Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s allegations regarding the Indian government’s involvement in the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar India has outrightly rejected the claims, calling it “absurd” and “motivated” Notably, Canada has yet to provide any public evidence to support the claim about the killing of Nijjar.

Rs 2,000 Note Exchange Deadline Ends Today. What Happens Next?

Last Date To Exchange Rs 2,000 Note Today. Will Banknotes Be Valid After Deadline?

After September 30, the Rs 2,000 notes can only be exchanged with the RBI.

The last day for returning or exchanging Rs 2,000 denomination banknote is today. According to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), from October 1, the Rs 2,000 currency note will cease to have its value and will be just another piece of paper. This comes months after the central bank announced that the Rs 2,000 denomination banknotes would be taken out of circulation. Notably, the RBI started printing the Rs 2,000 note in November 2016 after Prime Minister Narendra Modi scrapped high-value Rs 1,000 and Rs 500 notes overnight.

Now, here’s what will happen to Rs 2,000 currency note after today’s deadline:

According to RBI, the Rs 2,000 currency note will remain legal tender even after the September 30 deadline, however, they will not be accepted for transactions. After today, the notes can only be exchanged with the RBI.

Therefore, today marks the final opportunity for people to exchange or deposit Rs 2,000 notes at their respective banks without any specific limit. A non-account holder could also exchange the banknotes up to a limit of Rs 20,000 at a time at any bank branch.

However, it is important to note that the usual KYC (Know Your Customer) requirements and other legal deposit norms will still be applicable.

How to exchange Rs 2,000 notes

Individuals have the facility to exchange Rs 2000 notes at 19 Regional Offices (ROs) of the RBI. Besides that, one can also exchange Rs 2000 banknotes at any nearby bank branch.

According to RBI’s guidelines, as these notes are legal tender, the exchange should be done without the requirement of a request slip or ID proof. However, some public sector banks have implemented a different approach. Therefore, it is advisable to have an ID proof handy when exchanging this currency to ensure a smooth transaction.

Meanwhile, earlier this year, the RBI announced that about 93% of the Rs 2,000 banknotes have returned to the banking system since the central bank in May decided to withdraw the high-value note from circulation.

Indian Diplomat Stopped From Entering UK Gurdwara By Khalistani Extremists

Indian Diplomat Stopped From Entering UK Gurdwara By Khalistani Extremists

A pro-Khalistani activist was seen blocking Vikram Doraiswami’s car in the purported video.

New Delhi:

The Indian High Commissioner to the UK, Vikram Doraiswami, was stopped from entering a gurdwara in Scotland by Khalistani extremists. The incident comes amid a row over Canada accusing India of involvement in the killing of terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar.

According to a purported video going viral on social media, a pro-Khalistan activist was seen blocking Mr Doraiswami from entering the Glasgow Gurdwara on Albert Drive.

The video shows two men near the High Commissioner’s car in the parking area. One of them is seen attempting to open the car door, which has been locked from the inside. The high commissioner’s car then leaves the gurdwara premises.

Indian High Commissioner was invited by the gurdwara managing committee. A longer version of purported video shows the Khalistani extremists threatening the gurudwara managing committee staff as well.

There is no immediate reaction from the Indian government. As it is related to the security of the high commissioner, sources say that a police complaint has been filed.

A row erupted after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s alleged that “Indian government agents” were involved in killing of terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar’s killing. India rejected Trudeau’s charges as “absurd”.

Trudeau has offered no evidence to support his allegation against India, but reports said this was a shared information among an intelligence alliance also including US, UK, Australia and New Zealand. Rejecting the charge, India has accused Canada of providing safe haven to terrorists.

Tensions had been brewing between the two countries since Prime Minister Narendra Modi scolded Trudeau over rising secessionist activities in Canada, during a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of G20 summit in Delhi. In 2018, India had reportedly handed him a list of nine Khalistani operatives.
