Ukraine missile attack on Crimea leaves 24 injured

The situation in the air continues to be monitored as all operational services remain on standby, he went on to underscore.

A subsequent release issued by the Russian Ministry of Defense stated the overnight strike by the Kyiv regime included the use of 10 cruise missiles and three drone boats, Sputnik reported.

“Tonight, the Ukrainian armed forces conducted a strike against the shipyard named after Ordzhonikidze in the city of Sevastopol using 10 cruise missiles and attacked a group of ships of the Black Sea Fleet during the movement in the sea using drone boats,” the ministry said.

“Air defenses destroyed seven cruise missiles, and the Vasily Bykov patrol ship destroyed all drone boats. As a result of cruise missiles hitting the shipyard, two ships, which were in repair, were damaged.”

Over the last several months, Ukraine has repeatedly carried out drone strikes against Russian territory, more recently in the face of its failed counteroffensive.

Damascus: Syrian state media said the Israeli military carried out airstrikes in a coastal province on Wednesday, killing two soldiers, wounding six and causing material damage. There was no comment from Israel on the reported strikes.

Syria‘s state news agency quoted an unnamed military official as saying the missiles hit air defense units in the province of Latakia and that they were fired by warplanes flying over the Mediterranean Sea.

It was the latest attack since an Israeli airstrike hit the international airport in the city of Aleppo in northern Syria on August 28, damaging a runway and putting it out of service.

Israel has carried out hundreds of strikes on targets inside government-controlled parts of war-torn Syria in recent years, including attacks on the airports in the capital of Damascus, but it rarely acknowledges or discusses the operations.

The strikes often target Syrian forces or Iranian-backed groups. Israel has vowed to stop Iranian entrenchment in Syria.

'US proclaiming NATO nuclear alliance highly dangerous'

Russia views Washington’s statements proclaiming NATO a nuclear alliance as highly dangerous and fraught with escalation, Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said at a briefing within the framework of the 8th Eastern Economic Forum (EEF), TASS reported.

“We think that these statements by the US where it proclaims itself a nuclear alliance, NATO that is, are highly dangerous. We think that this wordplay only heightens risks and promotes the escalation of an already tense situation,” the diplomat said. She noted that Moscow had “repeatedly registered statements and actions by Western countries in the nuclear realm which are hard to see as anything other than inciting or threatening.”

In this context, Zakharova commented on the fact that the G20 final declaration contained a statement on the inadmissibility of using nuclear weapons. “I think that the inclusion of this provision is related to the international community realizing the sharp increase in strategic risks fraught with a nuclear escalation,” she said.

“The rhetoric as well as practical actions in this sphere have toughened,” the diplomat added. “Such as, for example, the Americans holding military drills as part of the framework of so-called nuclear groups within NATO, that is, those very countries that the US has made the testing grounds of its nuclear weapons in Europe,” she concluded.

Operation to extract American researcher from one of world’s deepest caves advances to 700m

A rescue operation began Saturday afternoon with doctors, paramedics and experienced cavers from across Europe rushing to help

Taseli plateau: Rescue teams on Sunday in Turkey successfully carried an American researcher up from the depth of a cave at 1040 metres (3412.07 feet) to the 700-metre (2296.59 feet) mark where he will rest at a base camp before they continue the taxing journey to the surface.

An experienced caver, Mark Dickey, 40, started vomiting on Sept 2 because of stomach bleeding while on an expedition with a handful of others in the Morca cave in southern Turkey’s Taurus Mountains, one of the deepest in the world, according to experts.

A rescue operation began Saturday afternoon with doctors, paramedics and experienced cavers from across Europe rushing to help. They set up small medical base camps at various levels along the shaft, providing Dickey an opportunity to rest during the slow and arduous extrication.

“Mark was delivered to the campsite at -700 metres as of 03:24 local time (GMT+3). At this stage, he will set out again after resting and having the necessary treatments,” the Speleological Federation of Turkey wrote on its official account on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Turkish authorities said there are 190 personnel from eight countries taking part in the operation, 153 of them search and rescue experts.

The most challenging part of the rescue operation is widening the narrow cave passages to allow stretcher lines to pass through at low depths, Yusuf Ogrenecek of the speleological federation previously said.

The extraction is expected to take up to 10 days depending on his condition.

Representatives for both Musk and Grimes did not immediately respond to People’s request for comment.

According to People, Musk and Grimes welcomed son ‘X Æ A-12’, whose name was later changed to ‘X Æ A-Xii’ and is nicknamed ‘X’ on May 4, 2020. Musk has six children with his ex-wife, Canadian author Justine Wilson, in addition to the three children he shares with Grimes.

Musk and Wilson had their first child, Nevada Alexander, in 2002, but he died when he was 10 weeks from sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).

At least 40 civilians killed in Sudan's Nyala

“Forty civilians have been killed in an air strike that hit two markets and a number of the city’s neighborhoods,” the medical source told AFP from a hospital in Nyala, the capital of South Darfur. The source asked for anonymity out of security concerns, France 24.

Witnesses in the area had earlier reported air strikes falling on two markets and causing civilian casualties in Sudan’s second-biggest city, where fighting intensified last month.

The vast region of Darfur – the size of France and home to a quarter of Sudan’s population – has seen some of the worst fighting in the five-month war between the regular army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, led by Burhan’s former deputy Mohamed Hamdan Daglo.

Since April 15, nearly 7,500 people have been killed, according to a conservative estimate from the Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project.

Wednesday’s attack came a day after a medical source reported 17 civilians killed in Khartoum’s sister city of Omdurman. Witnesses described the attack as RSF shelling.

On Sunday, at least 51 people were killed and dozens wounded in air strikes on southern Khartoum, according to United Nations human rights chief Volker Turk.

The armed forces control the skies over Khartoum, while RSF fighters continue to dominate the city’s streets.

The war between Sudan’s army, led by Gen Abdel Fattah Al Burhan, and the Rapid Support Forces, under the control of Gen Mohamed Dagalo, has raged on since April 15.

The conflict, which started in the capital Khartoum, has spread to the western region of Darfur, Kordofan and Jazira state, killing thousands and forcing millions to flee their homes.

Nepal aims to develop 30,000 MW of electricity by 2035

Laying the foundation for the construction of a hydropower project here on Tuesday, Basnet said that the government was preparing to develop a comprehensive energy development programme supported by a concrete action plan to generate 30,000 MW of power by 2035.

Kathmandu: Nepal aims to develop 30,000 MW of electricity within the next 12 years as the market for the Himalayan nation’s hydropower is growing in India and Bangladesh, the Minister for Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation, Shakti Bahadur Basnet has said.

Laying the foundation for the construction of a hydropower project here on Tuesday, Basnet said that the government was preparing to develop a comprehensive energy development programme supported by a concrete action plan to generate 30,000 MW of power by 2035.

“Our target under this programme is to produce electricity in the range of 25,000 MW-30,000 MW by 2035,” Basnet said while performing the groundbreaking ceremony for the 216 MW Upper Trishuli-1 hydropower project.

Pointing out that Nepal’s domestic demand for electricity is expected to reach 15,000 MW in the next 12 years, the minister said that besides developing hydropower projects, the roadmap will also involve constructing required transmission and distribution facilities and institutional reforms.

According to Basnet, Nepal’s existing hydropower generation capacity has reached around 2,800 MW.

“Several projects with a combined capacity of around 5000 MW are under construction,” he said.

In August, an understanding was reached in principle for the supply of electricity from Nepal to Bangladesh via an Indian transmission line, according to officials at the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA), and a formal agreement between the three nations will be signed soon.

Basnet praised South Korea for investing in the hydropower project here and called it a significant, high-quality investment for Nepal’s hydropower sector.

Nepal Water and Energy Development Company, a joint venture between Nepal and South Korea, is developing the project located at Dhunche in Rasuwa district, 75 km north of Kathmandu.

In 2022, the company completed its financial closure for the project, where it plans to invest around USD 647.4 million to develop the medium-sized hydroelectric project.

South Korean companies have a 75 per cent stake in the company’s equity, while the International Finance Corporation (IFC) has a 15 per cent stake, and a Nepali local partner has a 10 per cent stake, according to officials.

Speaking at the function, South Korean Ambassador to Nepal Park Tae-Young said that Upper Trishuli-1 is the third hydropower project in Nepal that got financing from South Korea. Chameliya and Modi Khola are the other two projects completed earlier with South Korean funding.

Construction of Upper Trishuli-1 is expected to be completed in the next five years. The run-of-river type project, built under the Build, Own, Operate and Transfer modality, will come under the ownership of the Nepal government after 30 years.
