Hezbollah calls for immediate ceasefire in Ain Al-Hilweh camp

In a statement issued on Monday, Hezbollah boldly opposed and categorically rejected the infighting, stressing that the Zionist enemy is the only beneficiary and that the Palestinian people and cause are the most affected.

“At a time when the Palestinian resistance fighters in the inside are engaging in the greatest epics aimed at liberating the soil of Palestine, this pointless fighting … destroys people and stones, deepens the tragedy, and greatly harms Palestinian national unity and the future of national action.”

Hezbollah called for an immediate ceasefire and commitment to the stipulations as well as mechanisms of the solution approved within the framework of the Palestinian national action, in coordination with the Lebanese security services and the active and influential forces.

“Deeply pained by the fall of the innocent victims”, Hezbollah asked God Almighty to grant the casualties families mercy and patience and the wounded wellness and recovery.

Hezbollah finally praised all the efforts exerted by all parties to decisively end this fighting, cope with its repercussions, and prevent it from erupting again.

Russia Claims Ukraine Attempted Putin Assassination, 2 Drones Shot Down

Russia today accused Ukraine of attempting to kill President Vladimir Putin. It claimed it shot down two drones which were used in the alleged attack.

It said Russia reserved the right to retaliate – a comment that suggested that Moscow might use the alleged incident to justify a further escalation in the 14-month-old war with Ukraine.

Putin was not injured and there was no material damage to the Kremlin building, it said, adding it considered the alleged attack “a planned terrorist act and an attempt on the life of the President of the Russian Federation.”

“Two unmanned vehicles were aimed at the Kremlin… the devices were put out of action,” the Kremlin said in a statement. The Russian president was not on the premises at the time of the attempted drone attack, the Kremlin added.

Ukraine has said it has “nothing to do” with alleged Kremlin drone attack.

“Ukraine has nothing to do with drone attacks on the Kremlin,” presidential spokesman Mikhaylo Podolyak said. “Ukraine does not attack the Kremlin because, firstly, that does not solve any military aims,” he added.

An unverified video circulating on Russian social media including the channel of the military news outlet Zvezda showed pale smoke rising behind the main Kremlin Palace in the walled citadel after the purported incident. Another showed one of the drones, right above the dome of the presidential palace, being shot down by Russia.

In a statement, mayor Sergei Sobyanin said drone flights would be prohibited unless a special permit had been obtained from “government authorities”. He added that the ban was meant to prevent unauthorised drone flights that could “obstruct the work of law enforcement”.

Meanwhile, the Kremlin said that the May 9 Victory Day parade would go ahead in Moscow despite the incident, the state-run TASS news agency reported.

Victory Day is a key anniversary for Putin, who often evokes the spirit and sacrifice that helped the Soviet Union repel Hitler’s Nazis at a cost of some 27 million lives to boost patriotic sentiment.

Earlier, the Kremlin said the Russian security services are working to ensure that Moscow’s annual Victory Day parade across Red Square on May 9 can go ahead safely despite the risk of a threat from Ukraine.

Russian energy, logistics and military facilities have been hit in drone and other attacks since Moscow launched what it calls its “special military operation” in Ukraine. Kyiv has not taken official responsibility for such attacks, but has often made cryptic or sarcastic comments welcoming them as it resists what it calls a Russian war of conquest.

Iran FM says to meet Saudi counterpart soon

In a press conference with journalists on Sunday, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian answered a question on the recent agreement on the restoration of ties between Tehran and Riyadh, saying, “In the political relations with the neighbors, in the middle of this Iranian year of 1401 (which ends on March 20), the relations of the two neighboring countries of the UAE and Kuwait with the Islamic Republic of Iran were enhanced to the level of ambassadors, and in the past days, we witnessed the return of Iran and Saudi Arabia relations to normalcy. We had held five rounds of security talks with Saudi Arabia in Baghdad, and during Mr. Raeisi’s trip to Beijing, the President of China had already proposed an initiative, which had been approved by the heads of state of Iran and Saudi Arabia.”

He said that in the exchange of messages, the Saudi side stressed the need for a round of high-level security negotiations between the two countries, so as a result, the person introduced by the Saudi side and the counterpart of Rear Admiral Shamkhani and a team consisting of security departments, the military and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs accompanied Mr. Shamkhani and his Saudi counterpart [in the talks.]”

He emphasized, “I will meet with the Saudi Foreign Minister in the near future, until now we have agreed that the technical delegations from both sides will visit the embassies and consulates general and provide practical preparations for the reopening of the embassies.”

The foreign minister said that Iran considers the issue of Yemen to be completely an issue related to the Yemenis, adding, “This is an issue that the Yemeni parties should decide on. Of course, the emphasis on peace, stability and sustainable security in the region has been one of the issues agreed upon by Tehran and Riyadh in these talks.”

Beijing asks bankrupt Pakistan to release dues for CPEC power firms and allow import of coal

Beijing asks bankrupt Pakistan to release dues for CPEC power firms and allow import of coal

New Delhi: The Chinese embassy in Islamabad has asked Pakistan to release overdue payments to the tune of $1.5 billion to Chinese Independent Power Plants (IPPs) working under the mega $64 billion China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).

The embassy also asked the embattled country to loosen forex restrictions which pose a hurdle in coal imports due to which Chinese power plants in Punjab, Balochistan and Sindh are not working optimally.

Pakistani newspaper The Express Tribune says that the urgent messages from China were conveyed to Special Assistant to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif Syed Tariq Fatemi to the Planning Commission on March 13, 2023.

Fatemi’s letter to the planning commission said in a meeting with China’s Charge d’ Affaires, Pang Chunxue, she conveyed her apprehension of major problems in CPEC power projects.

Pang reportedly told Fatemi that overdue payments to the Chinese power companies are close to $1.5 billion, causing concern among Chinese businesses.

Pang also said that currency exchange restrictions levied by the State Bank of Pakistan owing to precarious forex reserves too are hindering coal imports, which will eventually impact power production.

The two all-weather friends have at least 16 power projects under the CPEC with another five under consideration. Most of the 16 power projects are thermal, while there are a few solar, wind and hydropower plants as well.

Many problems haunting Chinese power plants are due to policy decisions. Several other problems are due to the financial crisis that Pakistan is facing since last year. And other issues exist due to poor administrative coordination between Pakistan and China.

Chinese power plants cannot import coal due to low forex with Pakistani banks. They cannot also purchase coal from the local market as it has to be cheaper than the imported coal. But the power plants cannot compare the prices due to exchange rate fluctuation and rupee devaluation.

Pang told Fatemi that the power plants were running below capacity because of shortage of coal and because of low production, these are being penalised by the Pakistani authorities.

The worst affected coal-fired power plants are located at Hub in Balochistan, Sahiwal in Punjab and Port Qasim in Karachi.

Separately, the China Power Hub Generation Company (CPHGCL) has urged Pakistan to provide it with increased funds for uninterrupted power supply to the National Grid.

China’s plants face severe problems also because of the constantly squabbling Pakistani politicians. A joint committee established by the Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to resolve problems faced by Chinese power producers has not met since December last year leading to escalation.

She suggested that their concerns could have been discussed in meetings of a joint committee, a forum specifically established by the prime minister to resolve the issues facing the Chinese IPPs.

However, the committee, which was to meet every two weeks, has not had any meeting since the inaugural huddle in December last year.

Raeisi: Enemies seek to instill despair, turn Iran’s strengths into weaknesses

Iranian President Ebrahim Raeisi has lauded the Islamic Republic’s achievements and progressive movement over the years, saying the enemies seek to induce despair among the people and turn the country’s strengths into weaknesses.

Raeisi made the remarks in an official ceremony to inaugurate the launch of several new urban railway routes in the capital Tehran on Saturday.

“Today, the enemies seek to instill despair, hopelessness and helplessness in the society, but we, the Iranian nation, believe in the culture of ‘we can’,” Raeisi said.

Underling the heartfelt cooperation between the Iranian government and nation, the president said a lot of work has been done in the country and a lot more is also underway, which will be accomplished through the efforts and perseverance of the country’s youths.

“Today, the atmosphere of work and effort prevails in the country, and such an atmosphere will surely bring about satisfaction and trust of the people, and generate strength for the country,” Raeisi noted.

“The enemy does not want the country to progress and the people to hear good news, so it tries to mask the strengths and magnify the weaknesses that exist in every corner,” he noted.

In a speech in November, Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei said arrogant powers are disgruntled by Iran’s scientific advances and tremendous achievements, adding that the West’s enmity towards Iran is rooted in the Islamic Republic’s continuous progress, which the West cannot stand.

“The enemy is trying to make not only the people and the youths, but also the officials lose hope, and unfortunately, the enemy has an internal extension that they are also trying to instill hopelessness and despair,” Ayatollah Khamenei said.

Touching upon some instances of progress and forward movements in Iran in recent weeks, the Leader recounted Iranian scientists’ new method to treat leukemia, localization of one of the oil and gas extraction equipment, opening of a railway line in a part of Sistan and Baluchistan Province, which is an important part of the North-South railway, opening several factories, setting up the first offshore refinery, operating 6 power plants, unveiling one of the largest telescopes in the world, launching a satellite-carrying rocket and unveiling a new rocket.

Ayatollah Khamenei said such achievements were obtained at a time that the enemy was trying to prevent this forward-heading movement with riots and by the imposition of draconian sanctions.

Quito: After the 6.8 magnitude quake hit southern Ecuador on Saturday afternoon, leaving at least 12 people dead, CNN reported citing government officials.

“Notable quake, preliminary info: M 6.7 – 6 km NNE of Balao, Ecuador,” United States Geological Survey Earthquake tweeted.

According to Ecuador’s communications department for President, 11 people were killed in the province of El Oro and one person died in the province of Azuay.

In an earlier statement, authorities said the person in Azuay was killed when a wall collapsed onto a car and that at least three of the victims in El Oro died when a security camera tower came down, reported CNN.

People who were injured were being treated at hospitals, the Presidency added, but did not provide further details.

The USGS gave the tremor an “orange alert”, saying “significant casualties are likely and the disaster is potentially widespread.” “Past events with this alert level have required a regional or national level response,” the USGS added. It also estimated damage and economic losses were possible, as per the report in CNN.
