Asia Cup: Why Pakistan Were 'All Out' Despite Losing 8 Wickets vs India

Asia Cup 2023: Why Pakistan Were All Out Despite Losing 8 Wickets Against India

India beat Pakistan by 228 runs in Asia Cup 2023© X (formerly Twitter)

Pakistan were completely outplayed by the Indian cricket team as the Babar Azam-led side succumbed to a 228-run defeat in the Asia Cup 2023 Super 4 match on Monday. The batters never looked quite comfortable against the Indian pace attack but it was Kuldeep Yadav who was the pick of the bowlers with a brilliant five-wicket haul. The game ended when Pakistan lost eight wickets as both Haris Rauf and Naseem Shah were not cleared to bat after suffering niggles during the game. While Rauf did not take the pitch at all on Monday, Naseem bowled 9.2 overs for his side but left the field due to injury.

Pakistan skipper Babar Azam was not pleased with the performance of his side’s batters and in the aftermath of the match, he praised Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj.

“Weather not in our hands – but both bowling and batting. (How Rohit and Shubman attacked Pakistan’s main bowlers) They had a plan for our bowlers. And then KL and Virat followed up and finished very well. (Pakistan fans, disappointed, maybe in the run chase. Never in the hunt.) Jasprit and Siraj bowled very well in first ten overs swinging both ways. Yes we lost back to back wickets, couldn’t build partnerships.”

Virat Kohli (122) and K L Rahul (111) struck unbeaten centuries to steer India to a commanding 356 for two, the team’s joint highest total against Pakistan in ODIs.

Part time spinner Iftikhar Ahmed leaked 52 runs in 5.4 overs and was the second most expensive bowler for Pakistan after Shaheen Shah Afridi (1/79 in 10 overs).

In response, Pakistan were all out for 128 in 32 overs. Kuldeep Yadav was the stand out bowler for India as he ended with a five wicket haul.

This Stock Hit 10% Upper Circuit Day After India-Europe Trade Corridor Deal

This Stock Hit 10% Upper Circuit Day After India-Europe Trade Corridor Deal

The upper circuit is the highest possible price that the stock of a firm can trade at.

New Delhi:

It is party time for investors who have put in their bets on shares of companies involved in railways and its allied activities.

An ambitious rail-port economic corridor deal to connect India-Middle East-Europe, seen as an alternate supply chain route in a completely evolved post-pandemic world order, was signed on the sidelines of the successful G20 Summit held in New Delhi — thus putting focus on railway infrastructure.

Shares of Indian Railway Finance Corp, the dedicated funding arm of Indian Railways, have hit a 10 per cent upper circuit minutes after the opening bell on Monday. The upper circuit is the highest possible price that the stock of a firm can trade at on that particular day.

Besides IRFC, Rail Vikas Nigam, RITES, Railtel Corporation of India, and Titagarh Rail Systems were in the range of 3-9 higher at the time of writing this report.

Coming back to the deal, Saudi Arabia, the European Union, India, United Arab Emirates (UAE), France, Germany, Italy, and the US committed to work together to establish the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC).

The corridor is expected to stimulate economic development through enhanced connectivity and economic integration between Asia, the Arabian Gulf, and Europe.

The IMEC will comprise of two separate corridors, the east corridor connecting India to the Arabian Gulf and the northern corridor connecting the Arabian Gulf to Europe.

It will include a railway that, upon completion, will provide a reliable and cost-effective cross-border ship-to-rail transit network to supplement existing maritime and road transport routes – enabling goods and services to transit to, from, and between India, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Israel, and Europe.

Along the railway route, they intend to enable the laying of cable for electricity and digital connectivity, as well as pipe for clean hydrogen export.

Meanwhile, the broader Indian stock indices started Monday’s trade on a firm note, taking cues from the overall successful G20 Summit in New Delhi.

The consensus on the New Delhi declaration by all G20 member countries despite a divided house given the ongoing war in Ukraine and the West’s sanctions on Russia, the ambitious rail-port economic corridor deal to connect India-Middle East-Europe, and the launch of Global Biofuel Alliance on the summit sidelines seemed to have attracted investors to bet in the market.

Sensex and Nifty were 0.3-0.4 per cent higher from their Friday close of 66,861.16 points and 19,910.10 points, with all sectoral indices in the green. Last week, Indian stocks ended at a high to log their best week in over two months

Going ahead, August inflation data in India and the US, expected to be released on Tuesday and Wednesday are likely to be the next market trigger for fresh cues.

Retail inflation in India rose sharply in July to 7.44 per cent and in the process breached RBI’s 6 per cent upper tolerance target, largely due to a sharp spurt in vegetable, fruit, and pulses prices.

5-Year-Old Girl Dies Days After Being Misdiagnosed With Common Cold

5-Year-Old Girl Dies Days After Being Misdiagnosed With Common Cold In Australia

Cathy’s lips turned blue and her mother called the ambulance

A five-year-old girl died from a bacterial infection after being misdiagnosed with a common cold. However, the medics later discovered that Cathy Kassis had been struck down with Strep A- a type of bacteria that can cause sore throats, scarlet fever and skin sores, reported News.com.au. But by the time she was diagnosed with the infection, it was sadly too late and her body had gone into failure.

Cathy’s stepfather Justin Sutton recounted the ordeal to 7 News, he said that he and Cathy’s mother Jasmine Worobez, were concerned from the onset of her illness and their fears continued to grow as she became sicker. Despite their concern, the doctors told them that she was suffering from a virus and advised them not to be concerned.

“After three days she had lost her voice completely, so we were obviously a bit concerned,” he told the local channel. The medics told them that it was merely a viral infection that needed to run its course.

However, her health deteriorated and the young girl struggled to breathe. The parents rushed her to hospital. “She wasn’t breathing properly … it was almost like an asthma attack or what it’s like to watch someone with emphysema trying to breathe,” Mr Sutton said.

After running COVID-19 and RSV tests which came back negative, the hospital advised the family she was suffering from a viral infection and sent her home. A few days later, Cathy’s lips turned blue and her mother called the ambulance. “She was going in and out of consciousness and had sort of collapsed in Jazz’s arms,” Mr Sutton recounted the ordeal.

He even performed CPR while on the phone with emergency services for around 15 minutes, then the paramedics arrived and took over while he set up the defibrillator. She was airlifted to Westmead Children’s Hospital where she was pronounced dead.

“They told us she had been pronounced brain dead. The coroner found the cause of death was strep A, and Westmead had found that out through a simple throat swab.”

Mr Sutton informed that he is proud of his daughter for donating her organs a few days later. “She donated three organs, and all three recipients are now expected to make a full recovery,” he said.

The family is now raising about Strep A, “It could’ve been treated with just a normal course of antibiotics,” Sutton lamented, emphasizing the importance of trusting one’s instincts when something doesn’t feel right.

Mumbai:

A special court in Mumbai on Monday extended till September 14 the ED remand of Jet Airways founder Naresh Goyal, who has been arrested in a money laundering case linked to an alleged fraud of Rs 538 crore at Canara Bank.

Naresh Goyal was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on September 1 under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) following a long session of questioning at the central agency’s office in Mumbai.

The 74-year-old businessman was produced before the special PMLA court at the end of his initial remand on Monday.

The central probe agency sought his custody for another four day for further investigation in the case.

The ED told the court that maximum money siphoned off has been stacked in foreign accounts and there is a person in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to look after it.

Special judge for cases under PMLA, MG Deshpande, then extended Goyal’s custody till September 14.

The money laundering case stems from an FIR of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) against Jet Airways, Goyal, his wife Anita and some former executives of the now grounded private airline in connection with an alleged Rs 538-crore fraud case at Canara Bank.

The FIR was registered on the government-run lender’s complaint which alleged that it sanctioned credit limits and loans to Jet Airways (India) Ltd to the tune of Rs 848.86 crore of which Rs 538.62 crore was outstanding.

Meghalaya Woman Claims To Have Found Nails In Tablets Health Centre Gave

Meghalaya Woman Claims To Have Found Nails In Tablets Health Centre Gave

The woman discovered two nails inside amoxicillin tablets prescribed by doctors (Representational)

Shillong:

In a bizarre case, a woman in Meghalaya’s East Khasi Hills district has alleged that she found nails inside antibiotic tablets prescribed by doctors at Pomlum Primary Healthcare Center (PHC) for her 12-year-old daughter, prompting the authorities to launch a probe into the matter, officials said on Monday.

The incident had taken place on Saturday when the mother discovered two nails inside two of the 10 amoxicillin tablets prescribed by doctors at the PHC, they said.

The mother, who did not disclose her name, told a local news channel in Shillong that two nails were found inside a strip containing 10 tablets the health centre had given to her daughter.

She had lodged a complaint with the PHC officials urging the authorities to take action against anyone involved in such grave misconduct.

Health Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh constituted a medical team headed by senior specialists and an inspector of drugs from the department which rushed to the PHC for verification and investigation.

“Upon arrival, it was found that the nail that was supposedly inside the capsule was actually bigger than the capsule itself,” Mr Lyngdoh told news agency PTI.

She said this in itself raises doubts about the genuineness of the complaint.

According to the minister, the capsules in other facilities were also checked if there was any similar complaint but there was none.

4 Key Takeaways From India's Dominating Win Over Pakistan In Asia Cup

At the end, it was worth the wait for Indian cricket team fans. A one-day match that spilled over to two days, due to rain in Colombo, provided the Rohit Sharma-led Indian cricket team an opportunity to test their mettle against world No. 2 ODI side Pakistan. And, they ticked the all right boxes. The India vs Pakistan Super 4 clash has always been billed as the ‘Big One’. The special status of the India vs Pakistan match can be gauged from the fact that it was the only Asia Cup 2023 Super 4 match that was given a reserve day. Although controversial, the move helped the fans see a full India vs Pakistan ODI game over two days.

Indian cricket team set Pakistan a massive 357-run target. The Babar Azam-led team could only notch 128 runs.

India had some major takeaways from the match:

Firstly, after the India vs Pakistan match, KL Rahul‘s position as the No. 4 batter can be safely said to be safe. Playing an international game after a long gap, Rahul stepped up with the team under pressure. He scored a brilliant century and was involved in a record stand with Virat Kohli. he also kept the wickets. With this innings Rahul has shut up his detractors.

Secondly, Kuldeep Yadav‘s form. India needs a bowler who can provide them the breakthroughs in  the middle overs. The Chinaman bowler proved that he is the answer to the problem by spinning a web around the Pakistan batters. He finished with a five-wicket haul on a pitch where pacers looked to have the upper-hand initially.

Thirdly, the form of the Indian top-order batters. Sachin Tendulkar summed up this point beautifuuly in a post in X on Monday. “Congratulations to Virat and KL for their 100s. One big positive sign for #TeamIndia is that all our top 6 batters – Rohit, Shubman, Virat, KL, Ishan and Hardik have scored runs at various stages in the 2 matches. Well played! Keep it up,” he wrote. With Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill to hitting classy half-centuries on Sunday, Indian top-order will feel more confident going forward.

Fourthly, and most importantly, the form of Virat Kohli. The master batter slammed his 47th ODI century and absolutely lorded over the Pakistan bowlers. He stayed unbeaten on 122* off 94 balls. If India are to do well in the Asia Cup and then the Cricket World Cup, Kohli’s form will be crucial. He is a big match player and he proved that once again.

India still need to do well in its remaining matches of the Asia Cup. But the signs are positive.

West Bengal CM Mamata on 11-day tour of Spain, Dubai from Tuesday

Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday said she will attend business summits and hold meetings with several businessmen during her 11-day tour of Spain and Dubai to attract investments to the state.

Speaking to reporters at the state secretariat Nabanna, Banerjee said she will leave for Dubai on Tuesday morning, where she will spend the night due to the unavailability of connecting flights, before flying to Spain’s capital Madrid the next day.

“We will stay in Madrid for three days, during which we will attend a business summit and meet non-resident Bengalis. From there, we will take a train to Barcelona, where we will participate in a two-day meeting for the Bengal Global Business Summit (BGBS),” she said.

She said this will be her first foreign tour in five years as the Centre “had not given her necessary permission earlier”.

“I am going (abroad) after five years. We did not get the necessary permission in the last five years. There are several invitations… I do not want to go to far-off places so that I can return quickly in case of any emergency,” she said.

Banerjee will be accompanied by Chief Secretary H K Dwivedi and senior office-bearers of renowned Kolkata football clubs Mohun Bagan, East Bengal and Mohammedan Sporting.

She said former Indian cricket team captain Sourav Ganguly will join her team in Madrid.

“Spain was the theme country of this year’s International Kolkata Book Fair, and it also participated in our film festivals. They are good in (apparel) manufacturing. We hope they will participate in this year’s BGBS,” she said.

Banerjee said she and her team will return to Dubai, where one meeting on BGBS and some other meetings are scheduled.

“We will stay in Dubai for one-and-half days before returning to Kolkata on September 23,” she said.

On whether she will meet any office-bearer of any football club during her stay in Barcelona, which is known to be the home of several world-famous football clubs, Banerjee said, “Let there be some surprises. When I am going there, I want to do something for Bengal.” Sources in the state government said Banerjee may meet La Liga president Javier Tebas during her stay in Barcelona.

Banerjee urged the people of the state to take proper measures to diffuse any attempts to disrupt law and order during her absence and said that she has held meetings with senior officials and given necessary instructions to them.

Clashes, arson mar Chile march to commemorate Pinochet victims

Chileans have clashed with police and committed acts of arson in the capital Santiago during a Sunday march to commemorate the victims of Augusto Pinochet’s military dictatorship, 50 years after the coup d’etat that brought him to power.

Civilians and police skirmished outside the presidential palace, La Moneda, where then-president Salvador Allende was overthrown on September 11, 1973, and at the cemetery that houses a memorial to the victims of Pinochet’s brutal regime.

Police used tear gas and water cannon in confrontations that left three officers injured, according to the government. Three people were arrested.

President Gabriel Boric, who had briefly joined the procession of some 5,000 people, according to official estimates, condemned the lawlessness after demonstrators broke through security barriers at La Moneda and damaged the building’s façade.

“As President of the Republic, I categorically condemn these events without any nuance,” he wrote on X social media platform, formerly known as Twitter, adding, “The irrationality of attacking what Allende and so many other Democrats fought for is vile.”

Half-a-century after the coup, Chile remains divided among those who defend the dictatorship and those who repudiate it.

Boric on Sunday became the first president to take part in the annual commemoration since the end of the dictatorship in 1990.

There were also clashes with police at other points during the march, with some marchers hurling Molotov cocktails and setting up burning barricades.

Inside the cemetery, some mausoleums were damaged, including the tomb of a right-wing senator killed in 1991.

“Those responsible for this violence are adversaries of the government,” said Manuel Monsalve, deputy interior secretary.

The bulk of the participants, bearing Chilean flags and chanting slogans such as “Truth and justice now!” or “Allende lives,” marched peacefully.

“September 11 is a date that fills us with memories, but also gives us some anguish, because instead of advancing we have regressed,” 76-year-old Patricia Garzon, a former political prisoner, told AFP along the route.

“With this march, we remember that 1973 broke democracy in Chile, and now we continue fighting to maintain and strengthen it,” said Luis Pontigo, 72, a retired teacher.

More than 3,200 people were killed or “disappeared” — abducted and presumed killed — by Pinochet’s security forces, and about 38,000 were tortured.

The general died of a heart attack on December 10, 2006, aged 91, without ever setting foot in a court.

Fifty years later, Chile is still trying to find its post-coup identity and shape a new political system.

In May, the far-right Republican Party led by conservative lawyer Jose Antonio Kast — a Pinochet apologist — won 23 of 51 seats on the council that will write a new constitution to replace the one dating from the dictatorship era.

In the morning, Boric inaugurated an exhibition dedicated to Allende’s memory at La Moneda, in the presence of the deceased Marxist leader’s family members.

Virat Kohli is the PLAYER OF THE MATCH for his brilliant ton. Kohli says that he always prepares his game to help his team and credits KL Rahul for getting a good start. He mentions that his job was the rotate the strike and once he completed his half-century he started taking on the bowlers. His target was the keep the partnership going. He talks about that cheeky shot where he opened the face of his bat and says that he doesn’t play that shot often and that he is a conventional player along with KL Rahul who bats the same way. He mentions that it is a memorable partnership for him and credits KL Rahul for coming back from an injury. He says that matches on back-to-back days is a different challenge and that he is ready for the next match and adds that he will take care of his recovery. He also thanks the groundsmen for their unwavering effort for the match to happen smoothly.

The Indian skipper, Rohit Sharma says that they wanted to get some game time which is very important for an ODI. He credits the groundsmen for their effort and thanks them for doing a terrific job. He adds that it is not easy to manage the ground. He mentions that it was a fantastic batting performance and they knew that the wicket was good but the interruptions were a hindrance. He adds that it was a terrific effort from the two centurions. He credits Kuldeep Yadav and Jasprit Bumrah for bowling brilliant spells and appreciates Bumrah for coming back strongly after a long injury. He says that it was an all-round performance and applauds KL Rahul for coming into the team at the last minute and playing a fantastic innings and credits his mindset.

The Presentation ceremony…

Babar Azam, the skipper of Pakistan says that his team were not up to the mark. He adds that he was surprised that the batters attacked their bowlers from the start and credits KL Rahul and Virat Kohli for finishing well. He mentions that Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj bowled very well in the first Powerplay and ends by saying that they failed to build strong partnerships.

The man of the moment, Kuldeep Yadav is down for a chat. Kuldeep says that he is very happy for his fifer and owes it to his practice and his consistency. He adds that he has got 4 wickets before on numerous occasions but bowling on a good length helped him achieve this milestone. He mentions that he plans when he is playing against a top side and focuses on his variation. He anticipated that the batters would try to play his across the line so he bowled according to that.

The top-ranked ODI side in the world has had an outing to forget and have crumbled under pressure here but these things are bound to happen every now and then. Pakistan just didn’t get the start with the ball like in the previous game between these two sides and even when they looked to have made a comeback, the rain came. When play finally resumed on the reserve day, they found themselves without the services of the in-form Haris Rauf who picked up a niggle and were forced to use the part-timers in his absence. But even their frontline bowlers couldn’t make a mark and it was a daunting task ahead for the batters. The opening pair of Imam-ul-Haq and Fakhar Zaman hardly managed to get bat onto ball with the former getting out early. Babar Azam was then dismissed by a gem of a delivery by and so was Mohammad Rizwan. After that, the innings never got back on track and it just kept on going downhill. Agha Salman and Iftikhar Ahmed did manage to get into the 20s but had no answer to the spin of Kuldeep Yadav and ended up losing the game by 228 runs.

India had the platform laid down for them by the two openers when the game started on Sunday and it was all about starting strongly on the reserve day. KL Rahul and Virat Kohli were on the top of their game from the get go and took India to a mammoth total thanks to their twin centuries. With the ball, under the floodlights, Jasprit Bumrah found his rhythm and bowled like he has been playing throughout the year. Bumrah got the ball to talk and got the early wicket and Mohammed Siraj too troubled the batters but once Hardik Pandya and Shardul Thakur came on to bowl, they got quick wickets that put India in the driving seat. Kuldeep Yadav then came on and weaved his magic as he ripped through the Pakistani middle order ending up with five out of the 8 wickets that fell, paving the way for India’s biggest ever victory over Pakistan in terms of runs.

Just under 32 hours before the first ball was bowled, this highly-anticipated contest has reached a conclusion and it is India who have cruised to the win. Haris Rauf was injured before play began on the reserve day and Naseem Shah too picked up a late niggle in the first innings and that means Pakistan will finish with 128/8. All the excitement leading up to the contest, all the rain delays and the use of the reserve day but in the end, this has turned out to be a one-sided affair between these two colossal giants of ODI cricket.

31.6 overs (0 Run) OUT! TIMBER! A FIFER FOR Kuldeep Yadav! He bowled this one a little short and on top of middle and leg. Faheem Ashraf shuffles away trying to cut it but gets an inside edge sending the ball crashing into the middle stump. India has clinched a massive victory over their arch-rivals as Haris Rauf and Naseem Shah will not come out to bat. Kuldeep Yadav will be a happy man with his five-wicket haul.
