Why This New Arunachal Tunnel Is Strategically Crucial For Indian Forces

The tunnel was part of 90 projects constructed by Border Road Organisation at a cost of Rs 2,941 crore

Itanagar:

A newly-built 500-metre tunnel in Arunachal Pradesh will provide all-weather connectivity to the strategic Tawang region along the Line of Actual Control. The Nechiphu tunnel will benefit armed forces as well as tourists and is part of the Centre’s massive infrastructure push in the region amid the border tension with China.

The tunnel was part of 90 projects constructed by Border Road Organisation at a cost of Rs 2941 crore. These projects were dedicated by Defence Minister to the country yesterday.

Here is a 10-point explainer on the Nechiphu tunnel

  • The Nechiphu tunnel has been built at an altitude of 5,700 feet on the Balipara-Charduar-Tawang road in Arunachal’s West Kameng district.
  • The 500-metre tunnel will reduce distance by 6 kilometres and cut travel time by 20 minutes.
  • According to defence experts, Nechiphu tunnel will play an important role in neutralising any threat from China.
  • The Nechiphu Tunnel, along with an under-construction Sela Tunnel, will provide all-weather connectivity. It will also reduce the carbon footprint in the eco-sensitive region.
  • The tunnel, built for two-way traffic, has modern lighting and has been equipped with safety facilities.
  • Previously, dense fog in the area disrupted civilian and military movement. The tunnel would now counter such visibility challenges.
  • State-of-the-art electro-mechanical system and firefighting devices will be set up inside the tunnel for any emergency situation.
  • The tunnel has also been equipped with an automatic illumination system and Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition controlled monitoring systems.
  • Raised footpaths have been built on both sides of the tunnel for safe movement of pedestrians. These footpaths will also have ducts for power cables, optical fibre cables and utility lines.
  • The foundation for the tunnel, which will benefit tourists too, was laid by the Defence Minister in October 2020.

California: Tech giant, Apple unveiled its much-awaited iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus at its “Wonderlust” event on Tuesday with USB-C type charging. According to The Verge, an American technology-based website, all models of the iPhone 15 will come with the Dynamic Island. That’s the pill-shaped cutout that first debuted on the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max, providing a new way to see certain notifications and interact with apps. The iPhone 15 also has an OLED Super Retina display, which supports Dolby Vision content with 1,600 nits of brightness. The peak brightness of this display is 2,000 nits in sunlight, double that of the iPhone 14.

The biggest noticeable upgrade to the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus outside of the visible USB-C and Dynamic Island changes is an improved camera system. The main camera sensor is moving to a 48-megapixel one, up from the 12-megapixel one found on the previous iPhone 14. There’s also a 12-megapixel telephoto and improvements to the portrait mode mean you won’t have to manually switch to portrait mode anymore, reported The Verge.

The iPhone 15 will come with a 6.1-inch display while iPhone 15 Plus comes with a 6.7-inch display. The iPhone 15 is priced starting at USD 799 (approx. 67,000 INR) for a 128GB model and the iPhone 15 Plus starts at USD 899 (approx. 74,000 INR) for a 128GB version.

Apple is also promising “all-day battery life” with the iPhone 15 thanks to a larger battery. The iPhone 15 also includes a second-generation ultra wideband chip, just like the new Apple Watch Series 9. This improves connectivity to other devices that are further away, and it can enable precision finding in Find My so you can find friends easier if they have the latest iPhone 15 models, as per The Verge.

Iran’s oil exports to China hit historic record in August: Report

Iran’s oil exports to China reached a historic record of 1.5 million bpd in August.

Iran’s exports of oil to China hit an all-time record in August despite continued US pressure on the country, according to a report published in the local media citing data from a major international energy data company.

The Sunday report by Fars news agency said Iran’s oil exports to China had reached an average of 1.5 million barrels per day (bpd) in August according to data released by Kpler, a French data firm based in Belgium.

The figure was the highest recorded in the history of Iran’s oil exports to China and was even higher than volumes reported before Iran came under US sanctions in 2018, said the report.

It said that previous records in Iranian oil exports to China had been reported in February 2023 at 1.3 million bpd and in November 2022 at 1.2 million bpd.

The report estimated that Iran’s revenues from August sales of oil to China had amounted to some $3.5 billion which it said was equal to Iran’s entire oil sales to China in 2020.

The estimate was based on average prices used to trade crude oil supplies from members of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) in August and considered the $10 discount Iran offers on those prices to make its oil grades competitive despite US sanctions.

The figures are the latest sign Iran has effectively emerged from the impacts of US sanctions on its oil industry.

Oil exports from Iran had reached as low as 0.3 million bpd in mid-2019 months after Washington toughened its sanctions on Iran by cancelling waivers given to Asian buyers of Iranian oil.

Binance Removes US CEO, Fires Over 100 Employees Amid Crypto Crackdown

Binance Removes US CEO, Fires Over 100 Employees Amid Crypto Crackdown

Binance US’s share of the global market has shrunk to about 0.6% from around 2.39% in April

Binance US Chief Executive Officer Brian Shroder has left the crypto trading platform and been replaced on an interim basis by Chief Legal Officer Norman Reed, according to a company spokesperson.

The departure comes as the company controlled by embattled digital entrepreneur Changpeng “CZ” Zhao is eliminating about one third of its workforce, or more than 100 positions, as a regulatory crackdown erodes its business. The exchange, which is formally called BAM Trading Services Inc., was started in 2019 for US users, who are prohibited from using Binance Holdings.

It’s the second round of job cuts this year at the Miami-based firm as it faces a series of mounting legal and operational challenges. In June, the US Securities and Exchange Commission accused Binance Holdings, Zhao and Binance.US with mishandling customer funds, misleading investors and regulators, and breaking securities rules. Zhao and the companies have denied the allegations.

In March, the US Commodity Futures Trading Commission charged Binance and Zhao with “willful evasion of federal law.” The Justice Department is probing Binance as well; it hasn’t accused the company of any wrongdoing.

Soon after the SEC action, customers of Binance.US became unable to deposit or withdraw dollars, a consequence of multiple banking partners cutting ties with the platform. The company has had to resort to an alternative method for Binance US’s users to convert dollars into crypto.

Binance US’s share of the global market has shrunk to about 0.6% from around 2.39% in April, according to Jacob Joseph, an analyst at researcher CCData. Monthly trading volume has fallen below early 2020 levels, he said.

“The actions we are taking today provide Binance.US with more than seven years of financial runway and enable us to continue to serve our customers while we operate as a crypto-only exchange,” a spokesperson said in a statement. “The SEC’s aggressive attempts to cripple our industry and the resulting impacts on our business have real world consequences for American jobs and innovation, and this is an unfortunate example of that.”

Binance.US laid off an unspecified number of workers after the SEC action, Bloomberg reported in June.

Binance Holdings has been shedding executives and other employees in recent months as well. This month, two executives overseeing regions including Eastern Europe and Russia left. In August, Binance lost its Asia-Pacific’s head and in July, a slew of executives including its chief strategy officer.

Focus On China Border, Defence Minister Inaugurates 90 Infra Projects

Focus On China Border, Defence Minister Inaugurates 90 Infra Projects

The border projects also include the Nechiphu Tunnel in Arunachal Pradesh.

Jammu:

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has dedicated to the nation 90 infrastructure projects of Border Roads Organisation (BRO) worth over Rs 2,900 crore spread across 11 States/Union Territories.

The projects were inaugurated by the Defence Minister at an event in Jammu on Tuesday.

In his address, Rajnath Singh described the BRO as the ‘bro (brother)’ of the Armed Forces, asserting that, through its infrastructure projects, BRO is not only securing India’s borders but also playing a key role in the socio-economic development of the far-flung areas.

Rajnath Singh credited the timely completion of these projects to the hard work and dedication of its personnel as well as the commitment of the government under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

“Together with BRO, we are ensuring that the nation is secure and border areas are developed. Timely completion of infrastructure projects in far-flung areas has now become the new normal of New India,” he said.

These include the Nechiphu Tunnel in Arunachal Pradesh, two airfields in West Bengal, two helipads, 22 roads and 63 bridges. Of these 90 projects, 36 are in Arunachal Pradesh, 26 in Ladakh, 11 in Jammu & Kashmir five in Mizoram, three in Himachal Pradesh and two each in Sikkim, Uttarakhand & West Bengal and one each in Nagaland, Rajasthan and Andaman & Nicobar Islands.

The BRO has completed the construction of these strategically important projects in record time, most of them in a single working season using state-of-the-art technology.

The event was organised at Devak Bridge on Bishnah-Kaulpur-Phulpur Road, which was inaugurated by the Raksha Mantri.

The state-of-the-art 422.9 meter-long Class 70 RCC Devak bridge is of strategic importance as it will enhance the operational preparedness of the Armed Forces and boost the socio-economic development of the region.

An important infrastructure project inaugurated by Rajnath Singh was the 500-metre-long Nechiphu Tunnel on Balipara-Charduar-Tawang Road in Arunachal Pradesh. This tunnel, along with the under-construction Sela Tunnel, will provide all-weather connectivity to the strategic Tawang Region.

It will be beneficial to the Armed Forces deployed in the region and the tourists visiting Tawang. Rajnath Singh had laid the foundation stone of the tunnel in October 2020.

The revamped Bagdogra and Barrackpore Airfields in West Bengal were also dedicated to the nation. These airfields, reconstructed at a cost of over Rs 500 crore, will not only bolster the preparedness of the Indian Air Force (IAF), but also facilitate commercial flight operations in the region.

In addition, Rajnath Singh virtually laid the foundation stone of Nyoma Airfield in Eastern Ladakh. This airfield, to be developed at a cost of approx. Rs 200 crore, will boost the air infrastructure in Ladakh and augment IAF’s capability along the Northern border.

The Defence Minister exuded confidence that this airfield, which will be one of the world’s highest, would prove to be a game-changer for the Armed Forces.

He also expressed hope the BRO will soon set another unique record with the construction of the Shinkun La Tunnel, the world’s highest tunnel at an altitude of 15,855 feet.

The tunnel will connect Lahaul-Spiti in Himachal to the Zaskar Valley in Ladakh and provide all-weather connectivity, he said, commending the BRO for developing infrastructure in border areas and making an invaluable contribution to the security of the nation.

Rajnath Singh emphasised that infrastructure development in border areas is not only effective for national security, but also promotes connectivity with a neighbouring country that functions with a spirit of cooperation with India.

He pointed out that the BRO has constructed infrastructure projects in several countries such as Myanmar & Bhutan and helped strengthen peace and cooperation with them.

The Defence Minister termed the working style and projects of the BRO as a shining example of civil-military fusion.

“Civil-military fusion is the need of the hour, as the responsibility of the nation’s security lies not only with the soldiers but also with the civilians. The BRO is developing infrastructure for the security of the country by coordinating with the civil and military sectors. This collaboration will write a number of golden chapters in the field of border infrastructure,” he said.

While Rajnath Singh underlined the need to work together to protect India’s borders, he lauded the cooperation of state governments, despite ideological differences, towards securing national interests.

He also called upon the BRO to involve local bodies & the people by understanding their needs and taking inputs for the projects in border areas.

“Your job is not only to connect one place with another. It is also to connect the hearts of the people with your actions. The constructions should represent the spirit of ‘for the people, of the people and by the people’,” he said.

The Defence Minister appreciated the BRO for being conscious about its responsibilities towards the environment and using modern techniques & technologies for infrastructure development. He urged them to keep focusing on the developmental activities while laying equal emphasis on environment protection.

“Till now, we have worked with the mantra of ‘minimum investment, maximum value’. Now, we need to move forward with the mantra of ‘minimum environment degradation, maximum national security, maximum welfare’,” he said.

Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) Science & Technology and Minister of State in Prime Minister’s Office Jitendra Singh, Member of Parliament, Jammu Jugal Kishore Sharma, Director General, Border Roads Lt Gen Rajeev Chaudhry and Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Western Air Command Air Marshal Pankaj Mohan Sinha were among those present on the occasion. Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu joined the event virtually.

With today’s inauguration of 90 projects worth Rs 2,900 crore, a record 295 infrastructure projects of the BRO, at an overall cost of approx. Rs 8,000 crore, have been dedicated to the nation since 2021. In 2022, 103 projects worth approx. Rs 2,900 crore were inaugurated; while in 2021, 102 projects at a cost of over Rs 2,200 crore were dedicated to the nation.

iPhone 15 Pro's Titanium Finish, USB Port Stands Out In First Look At Device

iPhone 15 Pro's Titanium Finish, USB Port Stands Out In First Look At Device

In the first hands-on testing of the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max, the new materials and charging port stand out as the most distinct changes from last year’s models.

The new phones’ use of titanium along the sides, which replaces stainless steel, is an attention-grabbing addition. The material is meant to make the phones more lightweight and durable, and that comes across immediately when you hold the device.

After unveiling the iPhone 15 lineup on Tuesday, Apple offered demonstrations to attendees at its Steve Jobs Theater in Cupertino, California. The new product – especially the higher-end versions – represents one of the company’s biggest upgrades in years. And Apple is counting on the new features to help reverse a rare sales slump.

Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook appeared on the demo-room floor, taking selfies with attendees and getting up close and personal with the handsets on display. He has described the iPhone 15 Pro as the culmination of “Apple innovations, advancing features across design, camera, performance and more.”

But much of the attention Tuesday focused on a more mundane change. When grabbing the new phone, attendees immediately flipped the device upside-down to examine the new USB-C port.

The connector is a switch from Lightning, which the iPhone has used since 2012, and the change is bound to irk some consumers. But the technology offers faster data-transfer speeds, at least on the higher-end iPhones. And Apple didn’t have much of a choice in the matter: The switch to USB-C was mandated by the European Union, and it didn’t make sense for Apple to produce a specific iPhone just for that market.

Aesthetically, the new connector makes little difference, but the disappearance of the Lightning port still felt like a big occasion for the technology enthusiasts and analysts gathered in the demo room.

The sizes of the Pro and Pro Max remain unchanged from the previous generation, at 6.1 inches and 6.7 inches. One twist: The colors on the higher-end phones are actually more muted than on the cheaper iPhones, giving the titanium more of a chance to shine.

The entry-level models – the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus – feature pastel versions of pink, blue, green and yellow, in addition to black. Seeing all the models side by side, the regular iPhone colors definitely provide more of a pop.

The technology behind the new colors is something Apple highlighted as well. During the presentation, the company explained that metal ions were used to dye color into the glass on the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus. The effect is clearly visible when you hold the phone in your hand and get up close to the frosted glass black.

Of course, the biggest features of the iPhone 15 Pro are ones you can’t immediately see. The A17 chip, Apple’s fastest in-house smartphone processor, will make it a more powerful gaming device. It supports a technology called ray tracing – a buzzy topic at the Apple event – that enables smoother graphics and improved color accuracy.

Pricing was also a big source of discussion among attendees. Most iPhone models will stay the same level this year, but the Pro Max will get a $100 bump to $1,199. One caveat: The device now starts with 256 gigabytes of storage, compared with 128 on the prior generation.

New Dress Code For Parliament Staff Kicks Off Row

New Dress Code For Parliament Staff Kicks Off Row

The safari suits of security personnel inside the building will be replaced with camouflage dresses

The new Parliament building is all set to host its first session on September 18. While the agenda of the special session is still unclear, it is certain that the parliament proceedings will move to the new building on September 19, Ganesh Chaturthi.

Apart from the revamped building, the uniforms of Parliament staff will also be new. The outfit has been designed by the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT). Sources close to the development suggest that the uniform change was supposed to happen in the last parliament session but could not be done for some reason.

The usual bureaucrats’ band gala suit will be replaced with a magenta or deep pink Nehru jacket with a shirt of a similar colour, featuring a lotus flower design. The employees will be seen wearing khaki-coloured pants.

Female staff, however, will be seen in saree uniforms like before.

The marshals of the Rajya Sabha and the Lok Sabha will be wearing a Manipuri turban after the uniform change. The safari suits worn by the security personnel inside the building will be replaced with camouflage dresses, similar to the military.

However, ahead of the lined-up changes, controversy has erupted over the use of Lotus, which also happens to be the election symbol of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Opposing the move, Congress’ Manickam Tagore said that instead of a lotus, the designs could have national symbols like peacock and tiger.

Controversy over the lotus theme for Rajya Sabha has played out earlier as well.

The new parliament building was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in May this year. Calling the building a “testament of the dawn of Aatmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India), PM Modi added, “Some moments in the developmental journey of a nation get immortalised, today is one such day…The new Parliament complex will witness the realisation of our ‘developed India’ resolution.”

The new parliament building has been built keeping in mind the possible future requirements. It can host meetings of 888 members in the Lok Sabha and 384 members in the Rajya Sabha. A joint session of both houses will be held in the Lok Sabha Chamber.

The devices feature a strong and lightweight titanium design with new contoured edges, a new Action button, powerful camera upgrades, and A17 Pro for next-level performance and mobile gaming.

Pre-orders begin from September 15, with availability beginning September 22.

“This is the most pro lineup we have ever created, with a state-of-the-art titanium design, the best iPhone camera system yet that enables game-changing new workflows, and the A17 Pro chip, which ushers in a new chapter of performance and games never before seen on iPhone,” said Greg Joswiak, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing.

The customizable Action button allows users to personalise their iPhone experience.

Powerful camera upgrades enable the equivalent of seven pro lenses with incredible image quality, including a more advanced 48MP Main camera system that now supports the new super-high-resolution 24MP default, the next generation of portraits with Focus and Depth Control, improvements to Night mode and Smart HDR, and an all-new 5x Telephoto camera exclusively on iPhone 15 Pro Max, the company said.

A17 Pro unlocks next-level gaming experiences and pro performance. The new USB-C connector is supercharged with USB 3 speeds “up to 20x faster than USB 2” and together with new video formats, enables powerful pro workflows that were not possible before.

The premium titanium used on iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max has one of the highest strength-to-weight ratios of any metal, making them Apple’s lightest Pro lineup ever.

Coming later this year, iPhone 15 Pro will add a new dimension to video capture with the ability to record spatial video for Apple Vision Pro.

Users will be able to capture precious moments in three dimensions and relive those memories with incredible depth on Apple Vision Pro when it is available early next year in the US.

UK trade union files complaint with UN over govt.’s anti-strike law

Members of the National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers gather outside Liverpool Lime Street station, July 2023.

Britain’s Trades Union Congress (TUC) has lodged a complaint with the United Nations against the government’s newly enforced controversial anti-strike law, which the union brands illegal.

The UK government adopted the new law in July. It will require some employees to work during industrial action – or face being sacked.

The TUC said it will be lodging the case at the International Labor Organization (ILO) since the new law “falls far short” of international legal standards.

“The right to strike is fundamental. Without the right to withdraw our labor, workers become disposable, replaceable and exploitable,” TUC General Secretary Paul Nowak told the congress on Monday.

“This new law isn’t about preserving services for the public,” he said. “It’s about telling us to get back in our place and to not demand better.”

The government, however, argues the new rules “protect the lives and livelihoods of the general public” as well as access to public services.

The UK government adopted the legislation following a year of unprecedented industrial action by hundreds of thousands of workers, amid a cost-of-living crisis.

Once implemented, the Strikes (Minimum Service Levels) Act will apply to a wide range of workers, including those in the rail industry and emergency services.

There would also be no automatic protection from unfair dismissal for an employee who is told to work through a notice but chooses to strike.
