Ben Stokes Shatters Records With Explosive 182-Run Knock For England

Ben Stokes struck the highest score by an England batsman in a one-day international on Wednesday, smashing a blistering 182 as the hosts piled up 368 against New Zealand at The Oval. But either side of his remarkable innings, fast bowler Trent Boult kept New Zealand in the game with an impressive return of 5-51 in 9.1 overs. England were set for a colossal total at 348-5 when Stokes was dismissed. But they lost their last five wickets for 20 runs, Boult wrapping up the innings with 11 balls to spare. England were wobbling at 13-2 following Boult’s early double strike in the third of a four-match series currently level at 1-1. But Stokes, who only recently reversed his ODI retirement ahead of next month’s 50-over World Cup in India, turned the tide in spectacular fashion.

His stunning 124-ball innings, including 15 fours and nine sixes, surpassed Jason Roy‘s previous England record of 180 against Australia at Melbourne in 2018.

Stokes, whose previous ODI top score was 102 not out, received excellent support in a third-wicket partnership of 199 with Dawid Malan (96).

Earlier, Boult again troubled an England top-order once more missing Roy after the opener suffered a fresh back spasm.

The left-arm quick struck with his first ball when Jonny Bairstow clipped him off his pads only to be well caught by a leaping Devon Conway at backward square-leg.

Boult then had Joe Root (four) inside-edging a drive into his stumps.

But Malan, back in the side after missing England’s 79-run win in Southampton on Sunday to attend the birth of his son, steadied the innings during a 52-ball fifty as he looked to cement his place in England’s final 15-man squad for the World Cup.

Stokes reached the landmark in just 44 balls, taking 15 runs off a single Lockie Ferguson over, including three fours, despite the paceman reaching speeds of 94 mph.

Test captain Stokes, in the absence of the injured Mitchell Santner, punished New Zealand’s spinners.

He was especially severe on Rachin Ravindra (0-28 in two overs), hoisting the slow left-armer for three big sixes.

Malan, fell just shy of what would have been his fifth hundred in 20 ODIs when he got a faint edge to wicketkeeper Tom Latham.

Stokes, as the sun came out in south London, went to 150 by slamming occasional off-spinner Glenn Phillips for six over midwicket.

He broke Roy’s record in style with a six off Ben Lister, only to hole out off the paceman two balls later to spark an England collapse from 348-5 to 368 all out.

"Baseless, Did Nothing Wrong": White House On Biden Impeachment Inquiry

'Baseless, Did Nothing Wrong': White House On Biden Impeachment Inquiry

The 80-year-old Democrat Joe Biden remained silent on impeachment inquiry so far.

Washington:

The White House on Wednesday rejected “baseless” allegations of wrongdoing against US President Joe Biden after Republican lawmakers launched an impeachment inquiry against him.

While the 80-year-old Democrat remained silent when asked by reporters about the probe, his spokeswoman pushed back against the investigation by his political foes.

“They have spent all year investigating the president… and have turned up with no evidence, none, that he did anything wrong,” Biden’s Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters.

“That’s because the president didn’t do anything wrong.”

Republican House Speaker Kevin McCarthy bowed to intense pressure from his party’s hard right and authorized the launch on Tuesday of an impeachment investigation.

Republican House members accuse Biden, a Democrat, of having “lied” to the American people about his son Hunter’s controversial business dealings abroad.

But Jean-Pierre said Republicans did not even have enough support for a vote in the House to approve an impeachment probe.

“Even House Republicans have said the evidence does not exist,” she said. “This is a political stunt.”

The probe comes as Biden faces low poll ratings ahead of a likely rematch with former president Donald Trump in next year’s presidential election.

Biden ignored impeachment questions from reporters at the White House while leading a meeting of his “Cancer Cabinet” which aims to eradicate the disease, part of a recent effort by the administration to put the focus back on his domestic agenda.

– ‘Good things’ –

Cancer is personal for Biden, whose eldest son Beau died from brain cancer aged 46 in 2015. Biden had a cancerous skin lesion removed in February while doctors removed two from First Lady Jill Biden a month before.

Biden has stood resolutely by his sole surviving son, Hunter, 53.

The younger Biden’s business dealings in Ukraine and China while his father was vice president under Barack Obama have been a constant target of Republicans.

Hunter Biden, a recovering drug addict, is currently under investigation by a Justice Department special counsel for possible tax evasion and is expected to be charged by the end of this month on a firearms violation.

However, he has not been charged with crimes related to his foreign business dealings, and no credible evidence has emerged so far that the president was involved in anything illegal.

The probe however threatens to distract the White House and give Republicans fresh material for attacks ahead of the November 2024 election.

Biden holds a slim one-percent lead over Trump — 47 percent to 46 — in a hypothetical match-up, according to a new national poll by Quinnipiac University.

Half of voters thought Joe Biden was involved in Hunter’s business dealings with China and Ukraine, while 35 percent thought the president did something illegal, the poll found.

Man Puts Wife's Body In Freezer To Collect Pension, Jailed For 3.5 Years

Husband Puts Wife's Body In Freezer To Collect Pension, Gets 3.5 Years In Prison

The man told investigators that he put his wife in a freezer after finding her dead

A 57-year-old Norwegian man was sentenced to 3.5 years in prison by a Swedish court on Monday for fraud and falsifying records, according to Fox News. The man had preserved his wife’s body in a freezer for almost five years in order to collect her pension.

The man’s lawyer told local paper Nya Wermlands-Tidningen, “They didn’t want to be buried at a public cemetery but at the farm, actually. So he put her in the freezer to later bury her outside and then it fell by the wayside.”

The man allegedly told his friends and family that his 60-year-old was alive even after she died from cancer in 2018. According to an English-language Norwegian news site, the woman’s family reported her missing after losing contact with her, but the man kept telling them that she was either sleeping or unavailable before eventually telling them she no longer wanted to speak with them.

The police found her body in March following a tip, and the man admitted that he hid her death and body.

The man told investigators that he put his wife in a freezer after finding her dead in their home. The couple lived in Arjang, which is about 340 kilometres west of Stockholm.

According to a few local media reports, the man had stored the body in the freezer which he also used to store food. In the meantime, the man kept claiming the woman’s pension and tax rebates, a total sum of more than 1.2 million Norwegian kroner ($116,000).

“The man also used the freezer for other purposes which I argue means that the deceased person’s sanctity of the grave was violated every time the man opened and closed the freezer, which is an aggravating circumstance,” said prosecutor Linda Karlsson in a statement.

The court has convicted the man on charges of gross breach of civil liberties, gross fraud, mutilating a corpse, and falsification of documents, among others.

AP Skill Development Corp established by flouting rules, says CID; Chandrababu Naidu named A1

AP Skill Development Corp established by flouting rules, says CID; Chandrababu Naidu named A1

Amaravati: The Andhra Pradesh Crime Investigation Department on Wednesday said as many as 13 signatures of TDP chief N Chandrababu Naidu were found in various documents pertaining to the Skill Development Corporation, which was set up by flouting the rules.

Speaking to reporters here, AP CID chief N Sanjay said owing to the alleged role played by Naidu in the ‘scam’, he was arraigned as accused one (A1) in the case. Initially, he was named as A37.

Due procedure was not followed when the corporation was established, and funds were channeled to private parties through the government entity.

Investigation has led to the conclusion, prime facie, that the then TDP government’s head and highest executive of the regime, Chandrababu Naidu had orchestrated the entire scheme, he said.

To set up a corporation, it is mandatory to obtain the Cabinet’s approval, which was not followed, the official pointed out.

“In the wake of widespread speculation over the Skill Development Corporation scam in various fora such as media houses, political parties and the general public, it is pertinent to set the record straight,” he said, noting that Naidu was the chief architect of this scam.

The skill development case pertains to setting up of clusters of centres of excellence (CoE) in the southern state with the total estimate of the project valued at Rs 3,300 crore but allegedly ended up causing a loss in excess of Rs 300 crore to the state exchequer.

Before the private entities, Siemens Industrial Software India and Design Tech System, involved in this project could spend any money, the state government released an advance of Rs 371 crore, which is 10 percent of the government’s commitment.

Citing reasons for naming the TDP chief as A1, he said Naidu set up the Corporation without getting the Cabinet nod and delegated key responsibilities to private individuals like Ganta Subba Rao by appointing him the head of the corproration.

Further, Sanjay noted that Naidu had personally sanctioned Rs 371 crore in a Finance department note.
The Skill Development Corporation was set up by a government order (GO), which mentioned that funding would be in the ratio of 90:10. But when the actual agreement was observed, there was no mention of the 90 percent component.

Further, the value of Siemens Industrial Software India’s software, which was bought by the Corporation for just Rs 58.8 crore was falsely mentioned in the account books as Rs 2,700 crore.

Sanjay added that Rs 241 crore funds are proceeds of crime in the case, which were routed through several layers to around 30 companies by involving private persons.

Naidu was arrested in connection with the fraud case involving siphoning off of funds from the Skill Development Corporation, leading to a loss of over Rs 300 crore to the state government.

Taiwan holds drill to prepare for nuclear emergencies

Taiwan holds drill on September 13 to prepare for nuclear emergencies.

Taiwan conducted a drill on nuclear emergencies on Wednesday, where it simulated scenarios inspired by drone attacks and natural disasters.

The annual drill organized by the Taiwan Atomic Energy Council involved the evacuation of local residents, detection of radiation levels with manned and unmanned vehicles, as well as decontamination of nuclear wastewater.

A local resident who had concerns about the Ukraine crisis and had felt a heightened sense of threat in Taiwan said she felt more at ease after witnessing the drills held in New Taipei City.

Organizers said one of the key differences in this year’s exercise is the upgrading of the scenario’s severity level from peacetime to wartime, in an effort to be better prepared, amid the war in Ukraine.

Iyer's Injury Keeps India Worried Ahead Of Aus Series Squad Announcement

Shreyas Iyer’s back injury isn’t apparently very serious but concerns remain about his availability for India’s final Super 4 game against Bangladesh on Friday as the national selection committee is set to name the squad for the three-match series against Australia sometime during the week. Iyer, who has come back after a long lay-off and a back surgery to cure his stress fracture, played against Pakistan and Nepal in the group league stage before pulling out of the match against the arch-rivals at the eleventh hour, complaining back spasms. A clearer picture will emerge on Thursday during the optional training ahead of the Bangladesh game.

Those in the know of the things said that there seems to be “some amount of stiffness”, which will definitely impact his movements during fielding but they are hopeful that it won’t turn out to be very serious.

The Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee is expected to name the squad for the Australia series sometime during the ongoing week. It could be on the day of the Bangladesh game or prior to the Asia Cup final on Sunday.

While the preliminary World Cup squad has been named, the Indian team management will be worried about Iyer’s fitness and if he misses the Australia series, he would be really short of match practice with only two warm-up games left before the first match against Australia in Chennai on October 8.

KL Rahul has put an end to all fitness worries with his 100 and 39 in the two Super 4 games and even though he still looked a tad rusty initially while keeping to Kuldeep Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja, he did regain a lot of confidence after gathering a few.

Ishan Kishan is now a designated outfielder and it is there to be seen whether Iyer, if fit, replaces Kishan in the final Super 4 game against Bangladesh.

Kishan, despite a great run in recent ODIs, did seem to struggle on slow tracks but to be fair to him, none of the batters save skipper Rohit Sharma and to some extent Rahul, looked comfortable against left-arm spin of Dunith Wellalage.

Travelling reserve Sanju Samson has returned home and Tilak Verma is supposed to join the Asian Games camp after the end of this tournament.

Possibly Tilak being a left-hander could pip a more experienced Sanju in worst possible case where he is unable to recover in time. However with two weeks (September 27) left to announce final squad, every stakeholder in Indian cricket will keep its fingers crossed.

Mexican Drug Lord El Chapo's Wife Released From US Jail

The U.S.-born 34-year-old was sentenced to three years in prison in 2021 in Sinaloa drug cartel case.

Los Angeles:

Emma Coronel, the wife of imprisoned drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, is not facing charges in Mexico, the country’s prosecutors’ office said, after she was released from a U.S. federal institution on Wednesday.

An official from Mexico’s state prosecutor’s office said Coronel was not facing charges “for now.”

The U.S.-born 34-year-old was sentenced to three years in prison in 2021 after pleading guilty to helping Guzman’s Sinaloa drug cartel, including conspiracy to launder money and distribute illegal drugs and engaging in financial dealings.

The Federal Bureau of Prisons confirmed she had been released on Wednesday from a low-security confinement institution in Los Angeles, but did not give further information, citing privacy, safety and security reasons.

Coronel has two daughters with Guzman, whom she met when she was a young beauty queen and married in 2007 at age 18.

Guzman is meanwhile serving a life sentence in the U.S. after being extradited there in 2017 following two escapes from Mexican maximum-security prisons.

Avoid Sanatan Debate, Target Centre's Failures: MK Stalin To Party Workers

Avoid Sanatan Debate, Target Centre's Failures: MK Stalin To Party Workers

The BJP-led Centre should be targeted on “corruption”, MK Stalin told party workers. (File)

Chennai:

The BJP-led Centre should be targeted on “corruption” and Sanatan Dharma debate must be avoided, DMK President and Chief Minister M K Stalin advised his party workers on Wednesday.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi telling his Cabinet colleagues days ago to defend Sanatan Dharma is a clear pointer that he is trying to derive political mileage out of the row, the Tamil Nadu’s ruling party chief said in a statement.

One of the Union Ministers is trying everyday to divert people’s attention by deliberately attempting to make Sanatan a talking point. “Our people should not fall prey to the trick of the BJP to hide its failures.” Dravidar Kazhagam chief K Veeramani has pointed out that the BJP wants to prevent debate on corruption and hence it is diverting attention by focusing on Sanatan Dharma, the Chief Minister said. Veeramani has underscored that “we should talk more on BJP’s corruption.” Hence, Mr Stalin urged his party cadres, office-bearers and leaders of alliance parties including the Congress and Left parties to keep the focus on graft.

“Let us work with dedication to win our cherished goal of protecting the country and democracy by defeating the graft tainted, communal and despotic BJP regime and I appeal to everyone to not give room to attention diversion.” People knew pretty well that those belonging to the BJP are adept in making people forget real issues and divert attention.

The Chief Minister listed alleged irregularities in Central schemes, including the Bharat Mala and Dwaraka expressway projects to the tune of Rs 7.50 lakh crore and claimed the CAG report has exposed it.

Referring to the Manipur violence, Mr Stalin said the BJP regime is spineless to “douse fire” and it is trying to change the course of national discourse. The recent victory of INDIA alliance partners in the bypolls is a precursor, symbolising a nation-wide win for the combine in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.
