Nasser Hussain lambasts England’s ‘Bazball’ approach, says it’s about individual performances

Dharamsala: Former England captain Nasser Hussain reflected on England’s 1-4 series loss in India, when the visitors were humbled in Dharamsala by an inning and 64 runs following two batting collapses and said “it is about individual performances in those conditions.”

The former captain defended pitches and praised a depleted Indian team for winning a series for the 17th time in a row at home. A five-wicket haul on his 100th Test by Ravichandran Ashwin broke the back of England’s batting line-up, handing the Three Lions’ ‘Bazball‘ school of cricket a blow as India won the Test by an innings and 64 runs at Dharamsala.

“The final Test was like the old-school England in India in the last decade or so – it was a very one-sided affair. They were 100-1 on the first morning having won the toss, so to lose so comfortably inside three days was a capitulation – but they had their chances in the series,” Hussain said as quoted by Sky Sports.

In Test matches, it essentially means continuing to dominate periods and preventing the opposition from winning. Since this is England’s first series loss since the period of Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum, who invented this style of play, they have failed to Bazball in India.

Hussain stated that the reason James Anderson and R Ravichandran Ashwin are two of the greatest players in the game today is because they are constantly striving for improvement. He claimed that England seemed to be lost in the word “Bazball” and that self-improvement has suffered.

“There is too much said and written about Bazball. We get lost in that term and the team do not like it. It is about individual performances in those conditions. The reason James Anderson, who took his 700th wicket in the Test, and Ravichandran Ashwin, who took nine wickets in his 100th Test, have ended up greats of the game is because they are constantly trying to improve,” he added.

“After a poor Ashes series, Jimmy wanted to increase his run-up speed going into the crease, feeling he needed a bit more zip at the age of 41. Ashwin is learning all the time, about seam positions and how to deliver the ball. You also look at Version Two of India spinner Kuldeep Yadav. That is so much better than Version One because he has tried to improve,” Hussain said.

He questioned why certain players stuck to their formula throughout the series, not trying to improve upon it in any way.

“Try to learn why you collapsed. Why does Zak Crawley keep getting starts and then getting out? Does Ben Duckett need to charge the bowler when the ball is so new and spinning? Ollie Pope – a brilliant 196, then nothing else. Look at your own game and improve. That is how you get better as a player and better as a team,” the former England captain said.

India consolidate top spot in WTC table after 4-1 series win over England

Dubai: The Rohit Sharma-led Indian team consolidated its top position in the World Test Championship rankings following its 4-1 series win over England.

India, following their innings and 64-run victory in Dharamsala on Saturday, improved their percentage points from 64.58 to 68.51 after nine matches.

India have won six, lost two and drawn one match in the current World Test Championship (WTC) cycle.

New Zealand, with 60 percentage points, are at second spot.

Despite lacking several frontline players and starting the five-match series with a loss in the first Test at Hyderabad, India bounced back remarkably to decimate England.

“The victory by an innings and 64 runs in Dharamsala helped them gain 12 crucial WTC points, taking their tally to 74. This has lifted their point percentage from 64.58 to 68.51,” ICC said in a statement.

India had jumped from second to first spot on the WTC table earlier this week after New Zealand lost to Australia by 172 runs in the opening Test at Wellington.

Australia are third on the table with 59.09 percentage points.

England are at eighth spot with 17.5 percentage points following the series loss to India.

Coming in to bat in the second innings with a 259-run deficit, the England team was in tatters at Dharamshala, in the fifth and the final Test match of the series against India. Though star batter Joe Root held up one end, wickets kept tumbling at the other end as the Indian bowlers ran through the English batting line up to wrap the five-match Test series with an innings victory on Saturday.

Tail-ender Shoaib Bashir kept the Indian bowlers at bay as he stood guard alongside Joe Root for an hour-long 9th wicket partnership. Just as things started getting slightly frustrating for the Indians on-filed, Ravindra Jadeja was handed over the ball to bowl the 46th over of England’s second innings.

Bashir, who was batting on 13 off 28 balls, faced the penultimate ball of the over when Jadeja rattled his off-stump. Completely unaware of his stumps being broken by Jadeja’s delivery, Bashir straight up sought a review assuming that the Indians were celebrating a caught-behind dismissal.

However, his partner at the other end had a wide smirk on his face before pointing out to Bashir that he was not given out caught behind but the ball had in fact clipped the bails off. The young player was then left embarrassed, even as players around him, including compatriot Joe Root broke out into laughter.

England captain Ben Stokes and Paul Collingwood who witnessed the funny moment from the balcony also broke into laughter when the ninth wicket fell in the form of Bashir.

Joe Root (84) was soon dismissed by Kuldeep Yadav, handing India the victory.

India lost the first Test of the series in Hyderabad, before winning the subsequent Tests in Visakhapatnam, Rajkot, Ranchi and Dharamsala.

Dharamsala: After a five-match Test series against England in which India suffered multiple setbacks be it player injuries and unavailability which forced the hosts to apply many changes and handed over five Test debuts, the head coach Rahul Dravid reserved special praise for chief selector Ajit Agarkar and his team “guided us in the right direction.”

India secured a massive victory in the fifth and final Test in Dharamsala with an innings and 64 runs, propelling hosts to a 4-1 series win over England.

At many moments throughout the series India were missing Mohammed Shami, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, Jasprit Bumrah, Ravindra Jadeja and Mohammed Siraj, however, the hosts came out victorious with a 4-1 victory against the visitors.

During the series youngsters Rajat Patidar, Dhruv Jurel, Sarfaraz Khan, Akash Deep and Devdutt Padikkal made their Test debut for India and the players did not disappoint the hosts, leaving their stamp with phenomenal performances.

“I’d just like to give a big shoutout to Ajit [Agarkar, chairman of selectors] and his team as well. A lot of the youngsters that come in, honestly, as a coach and as a captain, we don’t actually get to see them because we don’t see as much domestic cricket as Ajit and his team of selectors do. And they’ve pushed us and they’ve challenged us to pick some of these young players and they’ve picked the right ones and they’ve come out here and performed,” Dravid said during a post-match presentation.

One of the successful picks was wicketkeeper Dhruv Jurel, who had only played 15 first-class matches. Jurel saved India from going down by a large margin in only his second Test in Ranchi, earning him Player of the Match honours.

“It is really good to see them step up. All of them in their own way put in some performances and played a part for this team which is heartning to see. I would like to give credit to Ajit and his team as a coach and as a captain we dont get to see Test cricket. So we have to rely on Ajit and his team to tell us who are the guys in domestic cricket who they feel can step up and fill in the gaps when required. They have been spot on and guided us in the right direction,” he added.

Dravid said he want to appreciate the contribution made by Ajit and his team as the selectors usually don’t receive the credit they deserve.

“We pick the playing XI finally but they are the ones who guide us when it comes to the domestic cricketers. Sometimes they don’t get the credit that they deserve as selectors and I would like to really just acknowledge their contribution as well. All of these guys were playing in the A tour and it really helped us to see which of the guys are performing doing well currently and all those guys just came in and performed in the series as well,” he said.

I have been a part of it during my time with NCA. We have got a lot of domestic cricket and I think the A team is the bridge between these two standards and it really helps you identify the players who are doing well,” the head coach added.

Pietersen, Gambhir hail BCCI secretary Jay Shah for new Test incentive scheme

Mumbai: The Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) announcement of introducing a new Test incentive scheme for India’s senior men’s team has come in favour of Kevin Pietersen with the former England captain lauding BCCI secretary Jay Shah for the “highly commendable” action.

Shortly after India thrashed England by an innings and 64 runs to win the fifth and final Test at HPCA Stadium in Dharamshala to clinch the series 4-1, BCCI secretary Jay Shah announced the initiation of the Test Cricket Incentive Scheme for the senior men’s team.

According to the new initiative, the BCCI will give an additional match fee to India’s senior men’s team regulars with cricketers who play more than 75 per cent of Test matches in a season for India set to receive an additional fee of Rs 45 lakh per Test match.

Hailing Jay Shah as a “powerful leader” Pietersen said, “NOW WE TALKING! Highly commendable that @JayShah is doing his utmost to protect Test Cricket! We need powerful leaders to stand up for Test Cricket like this? Thank you!” Pietersen wrote in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

The incentive scheme serves as a financial boost for the players who prioritise playing Test cricket and comes on top of the existing match fee of INR 15 lakh per match.

“I am pleased to announce the initiation of the ‘Test Cricket Incentive Scheme’ for Senior Men, a step aimed at providing financial growth and stability to our esteemed athletes.

“Commencing from the 2022-23 season, the ‘Test Cricket Incentive Scheme’ will serve as an additional reward structure on top of the existing match fee for Test matches, set at INR 15 lakh,” wrote Shah on his X account.

According to the incentive structure posted by Shah, players featuring in more than 50 per cent of Tests in a season since 2022/23, will benefit the most.

A player who plays five to six Tests in a nine-match season will receive INR 30 lakh per match as a playing eleven incentive, while 15 lakh per match is kept as a non-playing eleven incentive.

Every player who features in at least 75 per cent of matches (which is seven or more matches in a nine-game season), will get a playing incentive of INR 45 lakh per match, while the non-playing eleven incentive is fixed at INR 22.5 lakh.

The incentives’ structure does not apply to those who play less than four Tests in a season. India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin also praised the BCCI for the new incentive scheme while World Cup winner Gautam Gambhir hailed Jay Shah and BCCI for this initiative.

“Freedom from uncertainty is extremely important for performance! Great step! @BCCI @JayShah.” Gambhir said in his post on X.

I am full of admiration for India’s bench strength: Ben Stokes

‘Ignore ‘Bazball’ at your own peril’  However, Stokes did not see the series defeat as a failure of the cricketing ethos that England have been following under him and coach Brendon McCullum.

I am full of admiration for India’s bench strength: Ben Stokes

Dharamsala: England captain Ben Stokes on Saturday said staying true to the ‘Bazball’ approach did not work and conceded that India were too good in their own conditions, always finding a way to wriggle out of tight curves. England won the Hyderabad Test to go up 1-0 but from thereon they resembled a jalopy under constant pressure from hosts under Rohit Sharma to lose the series 1-4.

“I’m full of admiration for India and the beast they are in their home conditions. Obviously, a lot was said about certain (Indian) players not being here.

But this series has shown the depth of Indian cricket,” Stokes said in the post-match press conference, speaking about absence of senior players like Virat Kohli and Mohammed Shami.

“We have seen a lot of young players come in and do extremely well (for India). Since that first game, India have been the much better team and obviously 4-1 reflects that.”

England came into the five-match series after extensive preparation in Abu Dhabi and even amidst the rubber they flew back to the Middle East nation for further ironing out the creases.

But all of those efforts did not bring the desired result for England. Stokes was understandably disappointed.

“I’m very disappointed, not only in myself but I’m disappointed for the team because of how much hard work has gone into this tour itself. If we weren’t disappointed, if we weren’t frustrated at how the series has ended up, I don’t really know what other emotions you could have,” said Stokes.

The Durham man accepted that they were outplayed by a far superior side. “We came here with very high hopes and confident about what we could achieve and started off very well. But obviously losing the series 1-4, not just myself but the team are big enough to say we’ve been completely outplayed in the last four games,” said Stokes.

So, what caused England’s downfall after that bright start at Hyderabad where Ollie Pope’s miracle hundred turned the tide for them?

“The team who seizes those opportunities and moments, theirs are the team that are going to come out on top. Whenever we managed to wrestle back any type of momentum with the ball or bat, India were always able to put it back on to us. “That was where the Tests after the first one were won and lost. It’s obviously very disappointing. But I’m always man enough to say that we got beaten by the better team,” he detailed.

‘Ignore ‘Bazball’ at your own peril’  However, Stokes did not see the series defeat as a failure of the cricketing ethos that England have been following under him and coach Brendon McCullum.

“Failure is a great teacher to sports teams. You either let failure and disappointment eat you up, but you can learn from failures and you make sure you don’t lose the enthusiasm of what we do. “We’ve got a massive summer coming up with six home Tests – Pakistan and New Zealand. I am obviously disappointed but write this team off, write me off at your own peril,” the all-rounder said.

Stokes reserved a special word of accolade for pacer James Anderson, who picked up his 700th Test wicket during the Dharamsala Test.

“Jimmy takes everything in his stride. He doesn’t play the game for the milestones. He plays for his team-mates and England. It was a pretty subdued celebration for 700. He’s just an unbelievable ambassador for the game and fast bowling.” “If someone came up to me and said: who should I emulate if I want to be a good fast bowler, the first name I’d say is Jimmy Anderson,” he said.

Stokes viewed his bowling here, a first since last year’s Ashes, and the efforts of batters Ben Duckett, Zak Crawley, spinners Tom Hartley and Shoaib Bashir as some of the positives from the series. Would bowl more in days to come

Stokes promised to work on his bowling harder in the days to come.

“I was just so focused to run in and get it down as hard and fast as I could. That’s why you didn’t see too much emotion. But I just love being back in the game with the ball in hand. “I know how much that helps the team, the dynamic. I will go back and work even harder to make sure in the summer I’ll play a full role as an all-rounder,” he signed off.

Bundesliga: Stuttgart cruises past union Berlin

Berlin: Third placed Stuttgart narrowed the gap with runners-up Bayern Munich to one point after moving 2-0 past 10-man Union Berlin at the opener of Bundesliga’s 25th round on Friday.

The visitors from the capital started brightly as Yorbe Vertessen shrugged off two Stuttgart defenders before pulling wide from promising position three minutes into the game, reported Xinhua

The Swabians gained the upper hand and opened the scoring as Enzo Millot missed the target from inside the box before Serhou Guirassy tapped home Atakan Karazor’s square pass in the 19th minute.

Stuttgart dominated possession and should have doubled the lead, but Josha Vagnoman couldn’t overcome Union goalkeeper Frederik Ronnow, who showed a great reflex on the goal line just before the break.

Union came out strong after the restart but neither Lucas Tousart nor Kevin Volland was able to beat Stuttgart custodian Alexander Nubel.

Clinical Stuttgart made it two after Chris Fuhrich benefitted on Diogo Leite’s misplaced clearance before curling the ball past hapless Ronnow in the 65th minute.

Things went from bad to worse for Union as Andras Schafer was sent off for a rude foul play.

Stuttgart remained on the front foot but couldn’t utilize its numerical advantage. Ronnow neutralized Vagnoman’s 20-meter effort in the closing stages.

With the result, Stuttgart cemented its third spot with 53 points after securing the second straight win, while Union stay on the 14th spot with 25 points.

“It is a deserved win for Stuttgart, but we also had the chance to score here today. If we had scored in the opening stages then things can go the other way,” said Union defender Robin Gosens.

“Overall, a deserved three points for us. We staged a good performance It is not all roses though as we gave Union room to create chances,” commented Stuttgart coach Sebastian Hoeness, who penned a contract extension until 2027.
