Sreenidi Deccan edge past Delhi FC with narrow win

Hyderabad: Sreenidi Deccan Football Club battled to a narrow 1-0 victory over Delhi Football Club in matchweek 18 I-League clash at Namdhari stadium, Sri Bhaini Sahib, Punjab on Sunday.

Lalromawia’s first half goal gave the Deccan Warriors all three points and kept them in second place in the I-League standings, five behind leaders Mohammedan SC. Head Coach Carlos Vaz Pinto made three changes to the side that lost to Real Kashmir in the previous match, bringing in Mayakkannan, Brandon Vanlalremdika and Arijit Bagui in place of Sajid Dhot, Lalnuntluanga and Kean Lewis.

Having switched to a 3-4-3 since the turn of the year, Sreenidi Deccan were back in their old 4-3-3 formation as they aimed for their first win in three games. Hosts Delhi FC controlled possession in the early stages but it was Sreenidi Deccan who broke the deadlock as winger Rilwan Hassan continued his rich vein of form to supply another assist, this time to Lalromawia who headed in from close range at the back post in the 22nd minute.

Thereafter, it was all Delhi FC but they failed to create any chances of note. The closest they came was five minutes before half-time as Sreenidi Deccan goalkeeper Albino Gomes failed to deal with a corner but defender Pawan Kumar bailed him out with a clearance.

The second half also played out in a similar vein as a scrappy midfield battle and an even worse pitch contributed to a game starved of quality. Delhi FC saw more of the ball but Sreenidi Deccan kept them in check and threatened on counter attacks. Substitute Rosenberg Gabriel had a chance to seal it in the dying moments of the game but he shot straight at goalkeeper Naveen Kumar and the match ended 1-0.

Kohli will have to master Chepauk challenge for RCB against CSK: Harbhajan

Chennai: For the unrelenting run-machine that Virat Kohli has been in the IPL, the MA Chidambaram Stadium here remains a peak that the Royal Challengers Bangalore batter is yet to scale.

Kohli stands miles away from the rest in IPL, scoring 7263 runs from 237 matches with seven hundreds and striking at 130. But that supremacy dips at the Chepauk, where he averages just 30 and has a strike-rate of 111.

In that context, former India off-spinner Harbhajan Singh said it was imperative for Kohli to produce a better effort when RCB face defending champions Chennai Super Kings in the inaugural match of this year’s IPL at the Chepauk on March 22.

“The greatness of Virat has been reduced in terms of his overall performance at that venue. It is a tricky venue to bat, especially as an opening batsman against a sort of weird tennis ball type bounce.

“They’ve (CSK) got the great (Ravindra) Jadeja bowling stump to stump. He’ll get the oddball to turn and then the oddball to stay low. It’s really tricky,” Harbhajan told Star Sports.

In fact, Kohli has gotten out in the Power Plays three times in his last five innings against CSK, and Harbhajan said the star batter will have to find a way to bat longer.

“If he’s actually prepared to bat about 20 overs, then he can put together a match-winning performance because two hundreds at the accessible Chinnaswamy do not necessarily guarantee the same at Chepauk,” he said.

Kohli has not been able to score an IPL century at Chepauk so far, and has a middling record against the Super Kings. The 35-year-old has made 985 runs against CSK from 30 matches with a highest of 90.

Harbhajan, himself a former CSK player, said Kohli needed to recapture his 2016 form for RCB to have a real crack at the elusive IPL title.

“It’s important for him to have a season like 2016, because if Virat goes on to score runs, the team will go forward. I don’t know if they will go on to win the cup or not.

“But with the brilliant individuals they have in their team—Virat, (Glenn) Maxwell, (Cameron) Green, and a few more like Patidar— I believe they have a lot of good batting. and everyone wants Virat to have a repeat of 2016,” he added.

During that year, Kohli made 973 runs from 16 matches with four hundreds and seven fifties, still the highest run-aggregate in an IPL season.

IPL 2024: Excited to work under Gautam Gambhir-Chandrakant Pandit combination, says KKR’s Venkatesh Iyer

IPL 2024: Excited to work under Gautam Gambhir-Chandrakant Pandit combination, says KKR’s Venkatesh Iyer

New Delhi: Ahead of the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League (IPL), all-rounder Venkatesh Iyer said he is excited to work under the combination of coach Chandrakant Pandit and mentor Gautam Gambhir in the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) camp.

“Gautam sir coming back is going to be a huge plus for KKR. I am really looking forward to working with him. Whatever conversations I’ve had with him in the past, he has always talked about creating an impact for the team’s goals rather than personal milestones.”

“He is an amazing leader and Iâ’m also excited to see the combination of him and Chandu sir (Chandrakant Pandit). Both are amazing tacticians and have the experience of winning trophies,” Venkatesh told kkr.in on Sunday.

After a lukewarm IPL 2022 season, Venkatesh had an impressive IPL 2023 as a specialist batter, amassing 404 runs as a number three and four batters at a strike rate of 145.85, with the highlight being a 49-ball century against Mumbai Indians.

“It’s always exciting to be a part of KKR and I feel honoured and privileged to play for this amazing franchise. The ultimate goal is to win the trophy. We know we have it in us to win it so we’re looking forward to going out there and putting our best foot forward. I â’m looking forward to contributing with both bat and ball, so let’s hope for the best,” added Venkatesh, who played two ODIs and nine T20Is for India. In the recent Ranji Trophy season,

Venkatesh had a good time with the bat for Madhya Pradesh, amassing 547 runs in eight matches, at an average of 45.58, including a century and four fifties.

“It was amazing to represent Madhya Pradesh in the domestic season under Chandu sir (Chandrakant Pandit). This was my first full season after almost four years. We did well as a team and there are a lot of positives for me to pick up. Coming in the camp on the back of a Ranji Trophy has given me a sense of conïfdence in my skills both with bat and ball,” he said.

In the Ranji Trophy matches, Venkatesh Iyer, associated with KKR since IPL 2021, also picked eight scalps with his medium-pace bowling, something which he didn’t do in IPL 2023 due to coming back in the game post an ankle injury which sidelined him for some time.

“The domestic tournaments help build confidence of executing your best balls under pressure situations. I have got a lot of confidence in my skills and once you’re confident about your skills, then the execution part becomes easy.” “Whenever the captain would want me to bowl an over or two, I’ll always be there. Shreyas has always had that confidence in me and he trusts that I can get the job done for the team in pressure situations,”he concluded.

KKR, the two-time IPL winners, will commence its main pre-season camp in Kolkata ahead of the 2024 edition on March 15. Their IPL 2024 campaign starts against 2016 champions Sunrisers Hyderabad at their home ground Eden Gardens on March 23.

India return to top in ICC Test team rankings after series win over England

Dubai: Following a 4-1 series win over England India reclaimed the top position in the ICC Men’s Test Team Rankings, taking over defending Australia.

India now has 122 rating points in the rankings table. Australia are second with 117 rating points, while England are at the third place with 111 rating points.

India secured a massive victory by an innings and 64 runs in the fifth and final Test in Dharamsala, propelling them to a 4-1 series win over England on Saturday.

After losing the first Test in Hyderabad by 28 runs, India fought back in style to win the remaining four Tests against England. Wins in Vizag, Rajkot, Ranchi, and now Dharamsala have helped the side to overtake Australia return and reclaimed top position in the ICC Test Team Rankings.

India had slipped to second place in Test Team Rankings after a drawn 1-1 series against South Africa this January with Australia overtaking Rohit Sharma-led side at the top of the Test rankings, after sweeping the three-Test series at home against Pakistan.

India will remain at the top regardless of the outcome of the second New Zealand-Australia Test in Christchurch, ICC reports. The ICC World Test Championship 2023 winners Australia currently lead the two-Test series 1-0 following their 172-run victory in Wellington.

After returning to top in Test rankings, India are now at the summit of rankings in all three formats. They have 121 rating points in the ODI rankings, with Australia sitting a close second with 118 rating points. In the T20Is, India have 266 rating points, with England (256) at the second place.

Djokovic survives scare to make winning return to Indian Wells

Indian Wells: The World No. 1 and five-time champion Novak Djokovic survived an opening-round scare in his return to Paribas Open, taken the distance by World No. 69 Australian Aleksandar Vukic before eventually grinding out a 6-2, 5-7, 6-3 victory.

Playing for the first time since his loss in the 2024 Australian Open semifinals to Jannik Sinner, Djokovic recorded his 400th Masters 1000 win, and improved to 51-9 lifetime at Indian Wells with his triumph on Saturday night.

“Five years is a very long time for a tennis player. It’s amazing to be a part of this tournament as a player. There’s a great community, culture and love for the sport, and for tennis – you can feel it,” Djokovic told the crowd after his win.

The 24-time Grand Slam champion was out of the blocks quickly in his first appearance in the California desert since 2019, breaking for 1-0, and then solidifying his hold on the set with another break for 5-2. But it wasn’t all smooth sailing for the 36-year-old legend.

The Aussie rebounded in set two, and he made his opportunity to prolong the match count when he scorched a forehand inside-out return to break Djokovic and claim the second set, 7-5, at the 90-minute mark.

Djokovic put his best serving on repeat and dropped a mere five points on serve across the stanza.

Vukic, sensing the inevitability of the situation, yielded a break in the fifth game, and another in the final game of the contest, Djokovic blew kisses to the raucous crowd, the match done and dusted in two hours and 10 hard-fought minutes.

The Serb will next meet Italian lucky loser Luca Nardi, who defeated China’s Zhang Zhizhen 6-3, 3-6, 6-3. It will be the first ATP Head-to-Head meeting between the pair.
