James Anderson makes history with 700th test wicket against India

The iconic fast bowler joins an elite club, comprising Sri Lanka’s Muttiah Muralitharan (800) and leg-spinner Shane Warne (708), as only the third cricketer to achieve this milestone in Test cricket.

James Anderson makes history with 700th test wicket against India

Dharamshala: Veteran England pacer James Anderson on Saturday became the first-ever pace bowler to pick up 700 Test wickets during the third day of the fifth match against India at HPCA.

The legendary fast bowler became only the third man after Sri Lanka’s Muttiah Muralitharan (800) and leg-spinner Shane Warne (708) to achieve the feat in the longest format of the sport.

With 698 wickets in his account going into the fifth Test in Dharamsala, Anderson’s start with the ball was less than ideal as he was the victim of Shubman Gill’s masterpiece. Ultimately, though, the seasoned pacer prevailed over the youthful Indian player to bag his own 699th victim.

Anderson dismissed Kuldeep Yadav on Day 3 of the fifth Test against India on Saturday to reach the milestone. An off-cutter from around the wicket lured Kuldeep into the drive. The ball took the outside edge and Ben Foakes did the rest behind the stumps.

As Warne and Muralitharan were both under 40 when they became members of the enigmatic 700-wicket club, the 41-year-old Anderson is the oldest bowler to reach the milestone.

Warne, meanwhile, was the one who kicked off the elite club on December 26, 2006, when he got the wicket of Andrew Strauss in the Boxing Day Test against England. A year later Muralitharan joined him on the list, meanwhile, it took around 17 years for any player to join the two greats on the list.

For England, off-spinner Shoaib Bashir took his second five-wicket haul in Tests as England bowled out India for 477 in their first innings early on Day Three. India now have a lead of 259 runs over England, with Shubman Gill and Rohit Sharma making 100 and 103 respectively. The hosts’ were also helped by a fine 65 from debutant Devdutt Padikkal and 56 from Sarfaraz Khan.

5th Test: Ashwin, Kuldeep put England at 103/5 at Lunch, trailing India by 156 runs

Off-spinner Shoaib Bashir claimed his second five-wicket haul in Tests, while veteran pacer James Anderson achieved a historic milestone as England bowled out India for 477 in their first innings.

5th Test: Ashwin, Kuldeep put England at 103/5 at Lunch, trailing India by 156 runs

Dharamshala: Ravichandran Ashwin and Kuldeep Yadav took five wickets collectively to reduce England to 103/5 in 22.5 overs at lunch on day three of fifth and final Test at the HPCA Stadium on Saturday. As of now, England trail India by 156 runs and one would surely believe the match will be over soon.

In the morning, off-spinner Shoaib Bashir took his second five-wicket haul in Tests while veteran pacer James Anderson becomes the first fast-bowler to pick 700 wickets in the format as England bowled out India for 477 in their first innings.

Kuldeep Yadav and Jasprit Bumrah added four more runs to the overnight total before Anderson picked his 700th Test wicket in the form of the former. Anderson lured Kuldeep into poking outside the off-stump and got a healthy nick behind to keeper Ben Foakes, ending the 49-run stand for the ninth wicket.

It made Anderson only the third bowler to pick 700 or more Test wickets after Sri Lanka’s Muttiah Muralitharan (800 wickets) and Australia’s Shane Warne (708 wickets). Bashir then got his five-wicket haul when he drew Bumrah forward on the front foot and had him stumped from behind to end India’s innings quicky.

Bashir also became the first England bowler to claim a five-wicket haul twice in Tests before the age of 21. Though India captain Rohit Sharma could not take the field due to a stiff back, as per the BCCI, with Jasprit Bumrah taking charge of the proceedings, taking a lead of 259 runs meant the hosts’ had done enough to put almighty pressure on England.

That came true when Duckett tried to take the attacking route against Ashwin, but totally played down the wrong line after dancing down the pitch and see his off-stump being rattled. Crawley was next to fall for a 16-ball duck, with short leg catching his flick off Ashwin.

An unsettled Ollie Pope top-edged to running square leg, giving Ashwin his third wicket of the innings. Jonny Bairstow was aggressive in his strokeplay to make 39 off 31 balls, laced with three fours and as many sixes. But he was trapped lbw after unable to account for sharp turn from Kuldeep, with replays showing the ball clipping top of leg-stump.

Ashwin came back for another over and that move paid off when his slider castled Ben Stokes through the gate at the stroke of lunch. Joe Root has held up one end with his 34 not out off 52 balls, but with not much batting to follow, fancy India to finish off the game in next session.

Brief Scores: England 218 and 103/5 in 22.5 overs (Jonny Bairstow 39; Ravichandran Ashwin 4-55) trail India 477 in 124.1 overs (Shubman Gill 110, Rohit Sharma 103; Shoaib Bashir 5-173, James Anderson 2-60) by 156 runs

5th Test: Bashir takes five, Anderson’s 700th wicket as England bowls out India for 477

Shubman Gill and Rohit Sharma’s centuries propel India to a 259-run lead over England.

La Liga: Teen sensation Lamine Yamal secures narrow win for Barca against Mallorca

Madrid: Teenager Lamine Yamal scored the only goal of the game to give FC Barcelona a narrow 1-0 win at home to Mallorca to keep their slim hopes of this season’s title alive.

Yamal, born in July 2007, produced a moment of magic to move Barca to within five points of Real Madrid, who entertain Celta Vigo on Sunday, reported Xinhua

Barca coach Xavi Hernandez produced a surprise in his starting line-up, with Robert Lewandowski rested and young striker Marc Guiu given a chance, ahead of January signing Vitor Roque.

With Pedri and Frenkie de Jong both injured, Joao Felix was picked to play in midfield, while 17-year-old Marc Cubarsi was also selected in defense, with Andreas Christensen again playing in midfield.

A close opening 20 minutes were interrupted when Barcelona were awarded a penalty after Copete clipped Raphinha’s heel in the penalty area.

Without Lewandowski on the pitch, Ilkay Gundogan took responsibility from the spot, but his kick was too central and comfortably saved by Mallorca keeper Predrag Rajkovic.

Rajkovic produced another save to frustrate Felix, before Raphinha had to leave the game with an ankle injury, and he also saved a header from Fermin Lopez, who replaced the Brazilian.

There were timid boos as the Barca players left the pitch at halftime, but the home side still struggled to break down the Mallorca defense at the start of the second half, with Vedat Muriqi hitting the post.

Yamal cut inside and hit the crossbar in the 57th minute, with Rajkovic getting his fingertips to the shot, before Xavi made a double change with Lewandowski and Vitor Roque on for Guiu and the ineffective Felix.

Yamal broke the deadlock with 18 minutes left when he cut in from the right of the area and curled a shot into the far corner of the net beyond Rajkovic’s reach.

New Delhi: Deepti Sharma bagged only the second hat-trick in the history of the tournament, after her exploits with the bat to hand UP Warriorz a thrilling one-run win over Delhi Capitals in the Women’s Premier League here on Friday.

Deepti scored 59 off 48 balls to take the Warriorz to 138 for 8 in their must-win match. She then returned to pick up a four-wicket haul, including a hat-trick to turn the match on its head for the UP side. Skipper Meg Lanning’s (60 off 46) master-class knock went in vain as DC suffered a bizarre batting collapse.

From 93 for 3 and needing less than 50 runs to win, DC were bowled out for 137 in 19.5 overs. With the victory, Alyssa Healy and Co arrested their two-match losing streak. Chasing a below-par total, the Delhi batters looked in a hurry to finish the game. Lanning took a particular liking to Gouher Sultana. The Australian slammed three back-to-back fours off the spinner in the 13th over, bringing her third consecutive fifty of the tournament in style.

The Australian slammed 12 boundaries in total and by the time Deepti trapped her leg before in the last ball of the 14th over, it seemed that the damage had already been done. However, the tenacious Deepti returned in the 19th over to get rid of Annabel Sutherland and Anuradha Reddy to complete her hat-trick and give UP a fighting chance for a win. The India all-rounder then accounted for Shikha Pandey in the same over.

Needing 10 off the last over, the Delhi batters struggled to keep their calm as Grace Harris picked to wickets, and UP also effected a run out to claim a famous win. Earlier the in-form Deepti, who was elevated to the number three spot, anchored the Warriorz innings. The Indian all-rounder scored 59 off 48 balls with the help of six boundaries and a six. However, she couldn’t find anyone to complement her once skipper Alyssa Healy (29) departed.

Asked to field, Titas Sadhu (2/23) got the early breakthrough for the home team. The 19-year-old cleaned up opener Kiran Navgire (5). Healy (29) and Deepti stitched a 46-run stand for the second wicket. The two collected 44 runs off the powerplay and kept the scoreboard ticking by collecting boundaries every over.

Off-spinner Alice Capsey (1/5) broke the partnership as she bowled a slower one which was on the shorter side to the dangerous Healy, who came out of her crease to whack the ball, only to find an eager Annabel Sutherland (0/12) at long-on.

Healy’s wicket changed the complexion of the match as it triggered a batting collapse. Tahlia Mcgrath’s (3) stay in the middle was cut short by Arundhati Reddy (1/15) as the ball hit the stumps. But that didn’t stop Deepti, who smashed two boundaries each in the next overs off Sutherland and Jess Jonassen (1/31).

However, the UP innings started unravelling as DC bowlers struck at regular intervals. Harris (14) received a reprieve in the 14th over when DC skipper Meg Lanning dropped her but the Australian couldn’t make use of it, falling to a Radha Yadhav delivery a couple of balls later. As wickets continued to tumble for the Warriorz, the boundaries dried up as well. Sadhu returned to claim the wicket of Shweta Sehrawat (4) while Radha accounted for Poonam Khemnar (1).

Brief Scores: UP Warriorz 138/8 (Deepti Sharma 59; Radha Yadav 2/16) bt Delhi Capitals (Meg Lannings 60; Deepti Sharma 4/19).
