New Delhi: Air India on Friday said Vistara routes and schedule as well as the in-flight experience will continue and the flights operated with Vistara planes will have the code ‘AI2’ post-merger.

The merger of the two full service carriers is scheduled to be completed on November 12, following which Singapore Airlines will have a 25.1 per cent stake in Air India.

Vistara is a joint venture between Tata Group and Singapore Airlines. Post the merger, the vintage ‘Maharaja’ will be retained through the frequent flyer programme of the integrated entity.

“The existing members of Club Vistara will be seamlessly transferred to Air India’s Flying Returns program. With this merger, Flying Returns will also evolve into an all-new avatar ‘Maharaja Club’,” Air India said in the statement.

Reiterating that the experience offered by Vistara will continue for customers post-merger, Air India said Vistara will be identified by a special four-digit Air India code beginning with the digit ‘2’.

“For instance, UK 955 will become AI 2955 helping customers identify them while booking… after November 12,” the statement said. Further, it said the routes and schedule operated by Vistara aircraft will continue to be the same, alongside the airline’s in-flight experience that includes the product and service such as menu and cutlery on the Vistara aircraft.

There are concerns in certain quarters on whether Vistara passengers will continue to get the same services such as now, post-merger as Air India, which is in the transformation phase, has been facing certain service issues in recent times.

Air India, on October 2, also said that Vistara experience will remain post-merger. On Wednesday, Vistara Chairman Bhaskar Bhat said the integrated entity will share the best practices of the two airlines and the livery of Vistara will stay for sometime.

The Air India-Vistara merger, announced in November 2022, will also see Singapore Airlines acquiring a 25.1 per cent stake in the merged entity.

Christmas Market Attack Suspect Warned Of "Slaughtering" Germans: Report

Berlin:

The Saudi man– identified as 50-year-old psychiatrist Taleb al-Abdulmohsen– has been remanded in custody for driving a car into a German Christmas market in an attack, that killed at least five people and injured over 200 others, on charges of murder and attempted murder, police said on Sunday. The suspect, an anti-Islam activist, is a residence status in Germany, where he has been living for almost two decades.

Several media reports highlighted that the suspect attacker had made online death threats against German citizens in the past and had a history of quarrelling with state authorities. According to a report by the magazine Der Spiegel, the Saudi secret service had warned Germany’s spy agency BND a year ago about a tweet in which Abdulmohsen threatened Germany would pay a “price” for its treatment of Saudi refugees.

Later in August, Abdulmohsen wrote on social media: “Is there a path to justice in Germany without blowing up a German embassy or randomly slaughtering German citizens?… If anyone knows it, please let me know.”

However, Die Welt daily reported, citing security sources, that German state and federal police had carried out a “risk assessment” on Abdulmohsen last year but concluded that he posed “no specific danger”.

Scholz Govt Faces Criticism

With German media digging into Abdulmohsen’s past, questions are being raised if the Chancellor Olaf Scholz-led government could have done more to prevent the Christmas market car-ramming attack. Mass-circulation German daily Bild asked: “Why did our police and intelligence services do nothing, even though they had the Saudi on their radar?… And why were the tips from Saudi Arabia apparently ignored?”

It charged that “German authorities usually only find out about attack plans in time when foreign services warn them” and called for sweeping reforms after the election for a complete “turnaround in internal security”.

Criticism also came from both the far-right and far-left parties already bitterly opposed to the Scholz government. Per a report by news agency AFP, the far-right AfD’s parliamentary head Bernd Baumann demanded Scholz call a special session of the Bundestag on the “desolate” security situation, arguing that “this is the least that we owe the victims”.

The head of the far-left BSW party, Sahra Wagenknecht, demanded that Interior Minister Nancy Faeser explain “why so many tips and warnings were ignored beforehand”.

Meanwhile, Chancellor Scholz has condemned the “terrible, insane” attack on Friday in the city of Magdeburg and made a call for national unity amid high political tensions as Germany heads towards elections on February 23.

German Christmas Market Attack

A driver rammed a car into a large crowd of revellers at a Christmas market in central Germany on Friday evening, killing five people and injuring some 205, of which 40 remain critical. The suspect, Taleb al-Abdulmohsen was arrested at the scene next to the heavily damaged car. A magistrate ordered him into pretrial custody after prosecutors pressed charges of murder on five counts, multiple counts of attempted murder and grievous bodily harm, according to a police statement.

Authorities said on Saturday the motive was not clear. However, the Magdeburg prosecutor, Horst Nopens, said one possible factor could be what he called the suspect’s frustration with Germany’s handling of Saudi refugees, according to a Reuters report.

About The Suspect

In an unpublished interview with AFP from 2022, Abdulmohsen reportedly referred to himself as “a Saudi atheist”. As an activist, he reportedly helped women flee Gulf countries and have in the past complained that German authorities were not doing enough to help them.

At the same time, he has criticised the entry of other Muslim migrants and war refugees to Germany and backed conspiracy theories about the planned “Islamisation” of Europe. A harsh critic of Germany’s past welcome to many Muslim migrants, he wrote on X that he wished ex-chancellor Angela Merkel could be jailed for life or executed.

In previous brushes with the law, he was first fined by a court in the city of Rostock in 2013 for “disturbing the public peace by threatening to commit crimes”, according to Der Spiegel. This year he was investigated in Berlin for the “misuse of emergency calls” after arguing with police at a station in Berlin.

He had been on sick leave since late October from his workplace, a clinic near Magdeburg that treats offenders with substance addiction problems. The chairwoman of the group Central Council of Ex-Muslims, Mina Ahadi, said that the Saudi suspect “is no stranger to us because he has been terrorising us for years”.

She labelled him “a psychopath who adheres to ultra-right conspiracy ideologies” and said he “doesn’t just hate Muslims, but everyone who doesn’t share his hatred,” according to the AFP report.

Trudeau’s future hangs in balance as key ally vows to topple government

New Democratic Party leader Jagmeet Singh, a key ally, says he will introduce a motion to topple the minority Liberal government

Trudeau’s future hangs in balance as key ally vows to topple government

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau

Toronto: The future of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau‘s leadership appeared increasingly uncertain after New Democratic Party (NDP) leader Jagmeet Singh, a key ally, said he would introduce a motion to topple the minority Liberal government.

Singh, whose party has been helping keep Trudeau in office, announced in an open letter posted on social media that he would declare a loss of confidence in the Trudeau-led Liberal government next year, a move that would trigger an early election if other opposition parties support his move.

Canada’s next election must be held on or before October. Singh is the last of Canada’s three main opposition parties to turn on Trudeau. In his letter, Singh said the Liberals were undeserving of “another chance.” “That’s why the NDP will vote to bring this government down and give Canadians a chance to vote for a government who will work for them,” he wrote.

He said the New Democrats plan to use their next opposition day in the House of Commons — during which opposition priorities are given precedence over government business — to introduce the vote. The House is currently on its winter break and is set to resume on January 27.

Singh’s letter came as questions swirled about the future of Trudeau, with at least 21 Liberal MPs now calling for him to resign, CBC News reported. Singh’s announcement is the latest in a series of political setbacks suffered by Trudeau this week after the resignation of Chrystia Freeland, his deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister.

Freeland quit hours before she was set to deliver an economic statement on Monday, citing political disagreements between her and Trudeau on the “best path forward for Canada” in light of tariff threats posed by US President-elect Donald Trump. “No matter who is leading the Liberal party, this government’s time is up,” Singh’s letter read.

Singh also said the Liberals have frequently not lived up to their promises and that the time for change is now. The letter was released just before Trudeau announced his revamped front bench on Friday morning. The New Democrats ended their parliamentary alliance with the Liberals in early September, but have repeatedly declared confidence in the government when the Conservatives have introduced votes to bring the Liberals down.

Yemen's Ansarullah says obtained new weapons technology

Hizam al-Assad, a member of the Political Office of Yemen’s Ansarullah, said that the Arab state’s war with the Zionist regime and the US government is intensifying.

“Yemen has acquired new weapons technologies that it will unveil later. Sana’a will continue firing missiles against the occupied territories and its drone operations,” he stressed.

Saying that Yemen’s war against the enemies is unlimited, al-Assad stressed, that the vital military and infrastructure areas of the Zionist regime are among the targets of the Yemeni armed forces.

“All the targets in the occupied territories are within our range with the help of new missile systems.”

Yemenis have declared their open support for Palestine’s struggle against the Israeli occupation since the regime launched a devastating war on Gaza on October 7 after the territory’s Palestinian Resistance movements carried out a surprise retaliatory attack, dubbed Operation Al-Aqsa Storm, against the occupying entity.

Yemeni Armed Forces have said that they won’t stop their attacks until unrelenting Israeli ground and aerial offensives in Gaza, which have killed at least 27,948 people and wounded another 67,459 individuals, come to an end.

The United States and Britain in December announced a military coalition to target Yemen in support of Israel.
