Biden extends national emergency against Iran

Biden extends national emergency against Iran

In a statement, Biden said the national emergency regarding Iran, which was declared in Executive Order 12957, will continue for another year, according to Reuters.

The so-called national emergency was first proclaimed by former President Bill Clinton in an Executive Order on March 15, 1995 citing “unusual and extraordinary threats the actions and policies of the Iranian government create against the national interests, foreign policy, and economy of the United States”.

About two months later on May 6, 1995, Clinton signed another Executive Order to impose comprehensive sanctions on Iran.

The Clinton-era measures against Iran differ from a state of emergency declared by the United States under President Jimmy Carter following the takeover of the American embassy in Tehran over espionage in 1979, the year of the victory of the Islamic Revolution.

From Carter’s time until today, all American presidents have extended the declaration issued against Iran that was added with another brought up during Clinton’s presidency.
