A passenger aboard the Boeing 787 aircraft operated by LATAM Airlines that dropped abruptly mid-flight recounted the incident on Tuesday, saying “It became out of nowhere.”
Brian Adam Jokat, a Canadian citizen residing in the UK and currently traveling around the world, said he was not hurt when the aircraft dropped but witnessed other passengers hitting the ceiling of the aircraft and flying through the air, adding that he feared for his life.
“I just looked out the window and I said ‘alright, this is it, you know, it’s done, we’re done.’ And then it straightened out instantly,” Jokat said via Zoom from Auckland, where he was staying for a few weeks amid his travels.
Jokat added that after the aircraft landed, the pilot told him his instrument panel had gone black for one or two seconds during the drop and then came back on.
Having departed from Sydney with 263 passengers and nine cabin crew members aboard, the flight landed at Auckland airport as scheduled on Monday afternoon.
