Russia says foiled Ukrainian ‘terrorist’ drone attack

Russia says foiled Ukrainian ‘terrorist’ drone attack

Ukrainian soldiers of the Achilles 92nd Brigade unload a Vampire combat drone near the front line city of Bakhmut on February 1.

Russia says it has foiled an overnight “terrorist” drone attack by Ukraine in the border region of Belgorod.

The Russian defense ministry said on Telegram on Tuesday morning that “an attempt by the Kiev regime to carry out a terrorist attack using seven aircraft-type UAVs against targets on the territory of the Russian Federation was stopped.”

The ministry stressed that no drone reached its target.

“All Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicles were intercepted by air defense systems on duty over the territory of Belgorod region,” the ministry added, without mentioning the exact location of the attack.

In recent months, Ukraine stepped up drone attacks against Russia as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky hinted at a change in Kiev’s failed tactics against Russia.

Russia launched a military operation in Ukraine in February 2022 partly to counter NATO’s further eastward expansion and to stop Kiev’s persecution of the pro-Russian population in eastern Ukraine.

President Vladimir Putin said the goals were “demilitarization and de-Nazification” of the East European country.

Most of the Ukrainian attacks against Russia are reportedly carried out by Western-supplied ammunition.

The West, the United States in particular, has supplied Ukraine with tens of billions of dollars worth of weapons and munitions to fight against the Russian nation.

Moscow has repeatedly warned against flooding Kiev with weapons and munitions, saying it will only prolong the conflict.
