'March for Equality': Hundreds of demonstrators rally against new immigration law in Paris

Over a thousand demonstrators marched in Paris on Sunday to voice their opposition to the “Darmanin” immigration law and to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the 1983 “march for equality”.

Footage shows protesters marching through the French capital while beating drums and holding placards, flags and banners.

The immigration law proposed by French Minister of the Interior and Overseas Gerald Darmanin is currently being debated in the National Assembly.

Under the “Darmanin law”, migrants living in France would have to meet several requirements, including proficiency in the French language, to remain in the country.

“There is a lack of labor immigration in the country. And the major problem is above all the problem of welcoming immigration,” said Eric Coquerel, an MP from the “Insoumis” party.

“Instead of tackling it head-on, i.e. how best to welcome migrants, how best to integrate them and how best to regularize undocumented workers, we prefer ever more sectarianism legislation,” he continued.

Minister Darmanin claims the proposed law sets the goal of promoting the integration of migrant workers in France while enabling the government to deport undocumented migrants. However, media reports denounce the draft as the most restrictive immigration law ever passed in France.
