Watch: 100 In 40 Balls – Maxwell Sets World Record With Fastest WC Ton

Australia star Glenn Maxwell rewrote history books as he slammed an ODI ton in just 40 balls against Netherlands in a Cricket World Cup match in New Delhi on Wednesday. In a supreme exhibition of power-hitting, Maxwell shred Netherlands bowling to pieces. Glenn Maxwell broke the record of fastest ton at the ODI Cricket World Cup set by Aiden Markram (49 balls), which the South African hit earlier in  the 2023 edition.

“Feels pretty good, I was not feeling well, wasn’t expecting much today, cleared my head. The situation when Davey and Greeny got out, had to rein myself in,” Maxwell said after his supreme effort.

“Patty was good as well. Even if they are banging it into the wicket, I feel I have enough time to go after it. And when they are bowling quick, my hands have to be faster. Just generally try to get it over the infield. They were outstanding (Netherlands fielding), they saved certain boundaries in the first 25 overs. It was a rock-hard outfield and they did so well. The ball seems to travel here, hopefully we get through the top order and put pressure on their middle order. Also put run-rate pressure. Nice to have the kid here – it’s been a while.”

Glenn Maxwell struck the fastest century of the World Cup, while David Warner hit his second successive ton to power Australia to 399 for eight against Netherlands on Wednesday. Maxwell (106 off 44) blew away the Dutch attack to score his century off just 40 balls, bettering the record of South Africa’s Aiden Markram, who had smashed 106 off 49 balls against Sri Lanka at the same ground here on October 7.

Maxwell hit nine fours and eight sixes during his whirlwind knock. Maxwell reached the 50-run mark in 27 balls in the 47th over. He then took only 13 more balls to reach the triple figure mark in the 49th over. The likes of Paul van Meekeren, Bas de Leede and , Logan van Beek bore the brunt as Maxwell unleashed fury.

Warner struck 104 off 93 balls after Australia won the toss and opted to bat.

Steve Smith also made a fine 71 off 68 balls, while Marnus Labuschagne scored 62 off 47 balls.

Logan van Beek (4/74) and Bas de Leede (2/115) shared six wickets between them.

Australia defeated Pakistan in their last match .
