Iranian wushu fighters win two golds at Asian Games


Afshin Salimi won the first gold medal for Iran’s wushu team in the 19th edition of the Asian Games in China.

Iranian wushu practitioners Yousef Sabri and Afshin Salimi have won two gold medals in the men’s final of the 19th edition of the Asian Games in China.

Sabri defeated Feilong Cai of Macau in the 75-kilogram weight class of the Sanda category at a competition in the XSG Sports Center in the city of Hangzhou on Thursday.

Salimi competed in the minus 65-kilogram weight class of the Sanda category and managed to win a gold medal for Iran earlier in the day.

In addition to the two gold medals, Iran’s wushu team has won four silver and one bronze medals during the continental event that kicked off on Saturday

The 19th edition of the Asian Games, delayed a year due to China’s measures to combat the COVID-19 pandemic, is the country’s biggest sporting event in more than a decade in several metrics, with approximately 12,000 athletes from 45 nations competing in 40 sports.

The Games are underway in 56 venues, out of which 12 have been newly built.

A record high of nearly 12,500 athletes from 45 countries and territories compete across 40 sports in the Asian Games.

Iran has sent 289 male and female athletes to the Games in 34 sports events.
