Brazil’s southern industrial city of Sao Leopoldo has manifested its support for the Palestinian cause by reopening the Palestine Square.

Extensive refurbishment of the structure finished last week.

On Monday, people took part in the reopening event waving Palestinian flags.

The square was first built in the 1990s in honor of the Palestinian diaspora who traditionally live in the neighborhood where the structure is built.

The refurbishment included a new playground for children and new benches as well as newly-created green spaces.

Mayor Ary Vanazzi led the inauguration ceremony, which was attended by Elayyan Aladdin, the Palestinian Embassy representative, Ualid Rabah, the president of the Palestinian Arab Federation of Brazil (FEPAL), and members of the Palestinian community in Brazil.

“I am very happy to carry out the reopening of Palestine Square in our city,” Vanazzi told the event participants.

“We built a square here so that Palestinian children can play with their families while many children in Gaza are being killed by Israel. It is very important to know that this is as an expression of the solidarity of the city’s residents with the struggle of the Palestinian people.”
