In a joint statement on Saturday, the four countries said they will hold maritime cooperative activity in the Philippines’s exclusive economic zone (EEZ) to demonstrate “collective commitment” to strengthen cooperation in support of a free and open Indo-Pacific, Asia Nikkei reports.
“Ultimately, the Maritime Cooperative Activity will strengthen the interoperability of our defense/armed forces doctrines, tactics, techniques, and procedures,” the joint statement read.
Five warships are set to participate in the drills, according to the Philippines defense department. Two Philippine warships, BRP Gregorio del Pilar and BRP Ramon Alcaraz, will join the drills alongside the US’ USS Mobile, Japan’s JS Akebono, and Australia’s HMAS Warramunga.
In the statement, Philippines Defense Secretary Gilbert Teodoro said, “This first in a series of activities demonstrates the enduring friendship and partnership” among the four countries.
A separate statement from the Embassy of Japan in the Philippines said the exercises will include anti-submarine warfare training.
