China ‘firmly opposes’ US military aid to Taiwan

China says it “firmly opposes” the United States’ approval of new military aid to Taiwan, warning that the move “seriously violates” the one-China principle and threatens China’s sovereignty and security interests.

On Saturday, President Joe Biden approved the delivery of a new military package worth $571 million to Taiwan. His administration also approved the sale of new arms sales worth $295 million to the self-ruled Island.

The decision is a “severe breach of the US leaders’ commitment of not supporting Taiwan’s independence,” a spokesperson for China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said on Sunday.

It sends “a gravely wrong signal to ‘Taiwan independence’ separatist forces,” the spokesperson continued.

The spokesperson stated that China strongly deplores and firmly opposes these actions and has lodged serious protests with the US.

“The Taiwan question is at the core of China’s interests, and the first red line that cannot be crossed in China-US relations.”

The Chinese diplomat emphasized that “China urges the US to immediately stop arming Taiwan and stop the dangerous moves that undermine peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait and [China] will take all measures necessary to firmly defend national sovereignty, security and territorial integrity.”

The US does not officially recognize Taiwan diplomatically, but is the self-ruled island’s strategic ally and largest supplier of weapons.

China, which has increased its political and military pressure on Taiwan in recent years, has repeatedly called for Washington to cease sending arms and assistance to the island, which it considers part of its territory.

Gaza: At least nine people were killed in Israeli shelling on the Gaza Strip, according to Palestinian sources. Israeli warplanes targeted in the morning a gathering of Palestinians west of the al-Shati refugee camp on Saturday, said Mahmoud Basal, spokesman for Civil Defence in Gaza.

Basal told Xinhua that seven people were killed and some others injured in the strike, all of whom were taken to the Baptist Hospital in Gaza City. Medical workers also recovered a body and a number of wounded persons after an Israeli airstrike on a house in the vicinity of al-Ta’min school in central Gaza, according to Basal. Meanwhile, in southern Gaza’s Rafah, medics said that a Palestinian was killed by an Israeli drone in the Khirbet al-Adas area, north of the city, Xinhua news agency reported.

Sources and eyewitnesses reported the Israeli army has been blowing up residential buildings in the al-Janina neighbourhood, east of Rafah, since morning hours. The Israeli army has not commented on these incidents. Also on Saturday, Hussam Abu Safiya, director of Kamal Adwan Hospital in Beit Lahia, northern Gaza, warned of the seriousness of the situation inside the hospital.

“Shells landed Friday on the third floor and at the doors. Fortunately, there were no casualties reported. However, it caused terror and fear among the wounded and children,” Abu Safiya said. “Until now, we have not received all the necessary electricity, water, and oxygen supplies,” he complained. Abu Safiya noted that the Israeli army “has not agreed to allow the entry of all the required medical supplies, and medical staff are prevented from entering.”

The Palestinian death toll from ongoing Israeli attacks in the Gaza Strip has risen to 45,227, Gaza-based health authorities said in a statement on Saturday.

PCB Ropes In Abdul Razzaq To Head Country-Wide Scouting Program

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has picked former Test all-rounder Abdul Razzaq to head a country-wide scouting program to find new talent for the national T20 squad. The program titled “Strike Force” aims to unearth hidden talent from all corners of Pakistan where T20 remains a popular format. An official of the PCB said that Razzaq has been given the task of initially spotting 50 players and shortlisting them so that some of them can go on to play for Pakistan.

“We have been struggling in T20 cricket for a while and the idea is that with so much T20 cricket being played in the country, and Razzaq himself being a class hitter and all-rounder, can unearth some unknown talent,” the official said.

Pakistan is presently lagging in the eighth position in the ICC T20 rankings and has lost the recent T20 series in Australia and South Africa besides losing a match in Zimbabwe.

Tape Tennis ball cricket matches in Pakistan are a big hit and some unknown players even command a good fee to appear in these local events and display their big hitting skills.

“Pakistan is clearly lagging behind other countries when it comes to hitting sixes and fours and unconventional strokes and the idea is some of those players who are limited to playing in local events can be good enough to play in international cricket,” the PCB official said.

Razzaq was previously associated with the board as a national selector until a few months back.

At Least Nine Killed As Small Plane Crashes Into Brazilian Tourist City

Sao Paulo:

At least nine people died when a small plane crashed on Sunday morning in Gramado, in southern Brazil, authorities said, slamming into a commercial area of the tourist city.

The aircraft crashed into the chimney of a building, struck the second floor of a house and then “fell on a furniture store,” the Rio Grande do Sul state security secretariat said in a statement.

An inn was also damaged, it added.

“There are nine deaths confirmed by the civil defense, and there are no survivors of the plane,” Cleber dos Santos Lima, director of the Interior Police Department of the state civil police, told AFP.

Authorities have not yet confirmed how many passengers and crew were traveling on the plane, a Piper Cheyenne 400 turboprop, but earlier said they thought it was carrying 10 people.

At least 15 people were taken to the hospital, most for smoke inhalation from the fire caused by the crash.

The plane had taken off from the municipality of Canela, another tourist town in Rio Grande do Sul.

Gramado is a popular tourist city in Brazil, with a significant influx of visitors during the Christmas season.

Hyderabad:

Hyderabad Police Commissioner CV Anand on Sunday issued a stern warning to bouncers against misbehaving with police personnel, stating that VIPs they accompany would be held accountable for their actions.

“In the recent incident at Sandhya Theatre, we saw 40-50 bouncers behaving recklessly. Despite the presence of the public and police, they pushed everyone aside. Their sole focus was on the VIP. This is a warning to all bouncers: if they misbehave with the police, strict action will be taken against them. The behaviour of the bouncers is the responsibility of the VIPs they accompany. VIPs cannot shift the blame to the bouncers; the liability rests with them,” said Mr Anand.

The warning came in the wake of a stampede-like situation at Sandhya Theatre during the premiere of the film Pushpa 2.

Meanwhile, Telugu superstar Allu Arjun responded on Saturday to allegations holding him responsible for the tragedy at Sandhya Theatre during the premiere of his movie Pushpa 2: The Rule.

Speaking at a press conference on Saturday evening, Allu Arjun described the incident as “very unfortunate” and criticised what he called “misinformation” and “character assassination” against him.

“It is a very unfortunate incident, completely accidental. My condolences to the bereaved family. I am receiving updates every hour about the child who was hospitalised, and his condition is improving. There is a lot of misinformation and false allegations being spread. I do not wish to blame any department or politician. However, my character is being unjustly assassinated,” Arjun told the media, referring to the December 4 incident at Sandhya Theatre, where a woman was killed and her child injured.

“I’m staying updated on the child’s condition. The good news is that he is improving. Despite this tragedy, the child’s progress brings some solace,” he added.

The tragedy unfolded on December 4, when Allu Arjun attended the premiere of his movie Pushpa 2: The Rule. A large crowd had gathered to see the star, and the situation escalated when Arjun waved to fans from the sunroof of his vehicle, resulting in the death of a woman named Revathi.

Following the incident, Allu Arjun was arrested but was released the next day after securing bail from the Telangana High Court by furnishing a bond of Rs 50,000.

Meanwhile, Allu Arjun’s latest release, Pushpa 2: The Rule, directed by Sukumar and co-starring Rashmika Mandanna and Fahadh Faasil, continues to break box office records.

Hyderabad: The Amrabad and Kawal tiger reserves have been listed in the top five among 52 tiger reserves in the country for the highest forest fires detections within the reserves.

The Nagarjunasagar Srisailam Tiger Reserve in neighbouring Andhra Pradesh recorded 2,644 forest fire detections in the 2023-24 fire season. After the Indravati and Valmiki tiger reserves, Kawal recorded 1,243 detections and Amrabad 1,224 detections during the same season.

For sustaining tiger population, a good prey base is required, which, in turn, depends on good spread of palatable grasses.

Hence, fires play a major role in the management of tiger reserves, both as a management tool to maintain grasslands and as an ecological threat, according to the Indian State of Forest Report released on Saturday.

According to the report, it is important to detect forest fires for taking up remedial measures. It is equally important to assess forest area affected by forest fires and assess the damage to forest and biodiversity.

The number of forest fires detected by the Forest Survey of India using MODIS and SNPP-VIIRS sensors also increased in Telangana. Compared to SNPP-VIIRS sensor detections of 13,117 during November 2022-June 2023, the numbers have increased by a notch — 13,479 detections during the November 2023-June 2024 season.

Telangana was also among the States with the maximum decrease of forest cover inside the Recorded Forest Area. After Tripura, with 116.90 square km, Telangana stood second with 105.87 square km and Assam with 86.66 square km.

The maximum fire-affected forest areas have also been observed in Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and Telangana.

The highest per cent of Recorded Forest Area affected by forest fire has been observed in Telangana (14.82 per cent), followed by Andhra Pradesh (13.94 per cent) and Bihar (10.71 per cent).

In the State-wise burnt area assessment, Telangana stand third in the chart. The total burnt area in Andhra Pradesh (leads the chart) during the November 2023-June 2024 season was recorded at 5,286.76 square km.

The total burnt area in Maharashtra was recorded at 4,095.04 square km, followed by Telangana, which recorded 3,983.28 square km during the season.

Israel indicts two settlers over suspected spying for Hezbollah

At least two Israeli settlers have been arrested in occupied al-Quds for allegedly passing on information to contacts in the Hezbollah resistance movement during the Israeli aggression against Lebanon.

The Israeli Attorney’s Office filed an indictment against the pair, who allegedly made contact with operatives from the Lebanese group and sent news articles about the security situation in Israel.

According to the indictment, Abd al-Salam Qawasameh and Taar Asili were in contact via a WhatsApp group with a Hezbollah operative. The pair also allegedly were asked to speak with a senior Hezbollah intelligence officer.

They are now charged with “contact with a foreign agent” and passing information to the enemy.

Qawasameh was also hit with weapons offenses after he took a photo with an assault rifle that belonged to a Palestinian gunman during a visit to the occupied West Bank city of Jenin.

They are also accused of sending photos and videos from Caesarea, where the Israeli regime’s prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu has a private residence.

Qawasameh sent to the Hezbollah handler photos from the coastal town of Caesarea and Asili sent her news articles about Israel and the security situation, the indictment says.

The prosecution has asked a district court in occupied al-Quds to have them kept in custody until the end of the legal proceedings.

Last month, Israeli media reported that the Shin Bet arrested several suspects in Netanyahu’s office on charges of leaking highly classified information related to the genocidal war on Gaza.

Several suspects were arrested concerning a leak of classified documents from the prime minister’s office (PMO). A report from Ynet back then stated that one of those arrested was a spokesman who worked with the PMO.

Back in October, Israeli prosecutors said authorities had arrested seven Jewish settlers from the northern part of the occupied territories on charges of carrying out tasks for Iran and gathering information on the regime’s strategic installations.

Hezbollah had been responding to the Israeli aggression against Lebanon with hundreds of successful retaliatory strikes on various sensitive and strategic military targets across the occupied territories.

The Lebanese resistance movement announced than 100 Israeli troops have been killed and upwards of a thousand others injured during the strikes.

Regional resistance groups say the ceasefire Israel eventually clinched with Hezbollah has shattered Netanyahu’s “illusion” of reshaping West Asia by force.

Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati recently censured Israel for its daily violations of the 60-day ceasefire agreement, asserting that the regime is not meeting its obligations.

Boxing Day Test: Rohit, KL Rahul injured during practice session

Melbourne: Ahead of the Boxing Day Test against Australia, India skipper Rohit Sharma and opener KL Rahul suffered injury scares during the side’s practice session at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) on Sunday.

While facing throwdowns, Rohit took a painful blow on the side of his left knee. Though he tried to continue his practice session, Rohit was forced to seek medical attention and was seen sitting on a chair, with his left knee being nursed by an ice pack for almost 25 minutes. If that wasn’t enough, Rahul also got hit on his right hand in the training session and needed immediate medical attention.

There has been no official statement from the BCCI or the Indian team about the status of Rohit and Rahul after suffering injury scares. Seamer Akash Deep was also hit on his hand during the practice session, but said in the press conference, “The practice pitch is probably meant for white-ball cricket, the ball kept low at times. As for these minor injuries, these things happen at training, and there are no major concerns because of that. I am fine.”

Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Rohit and Rishabh Pant had long batting sessions in the nets, while Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj and other pacers went about their practice with full intensity. The Indian team will have a rest day on Monday, ahead of the fourth Test starting in Melbourne on December 26.

The five-match Border-Gavaskar Trophy series is currently locked at 1-1. India began the series with a comprehensive 295-run win in Perth, followed by Australia bouncing back with a ten-wicket victory in Adelaide, before the two teams were held on to a draw in a rain-hit match at Brisbane.

PM Modi to attend Christmas celebrations hosted by Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India tomorrow

A delegation from the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India called on PM Narendra Modi to attend the Christmas celebrations organised by the CBCI

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to attend the Christmas celebrations organised by the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI) at the CBCI Centre in New Delhi at 6.30 p.m. on Monday – marking a historic occasion as it will be the first time a Prime Minister will be present at the festive event at the headquarters of the Catholic Church in the country.

During the event, PM Modi is expected to interact with key leaders from the Christian community, including Cardinals, Bishops, and prominent lay figures.

His presence highlights the government’s commitment to fostering inclusive cultural dialogue and strengthening relations with the Christian community, a PMO statement said.

The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India, established in 1944, is a significant body that represents the interests of Catholics across India. It plays a crucial role in promoting faith-based initiatives and addressing social issues affecting the community.

Earlier this week, on December 19, PM Modi attended another Christmas celebration at the residence of Union Minister George Kurian. There, he engaged with eminent members of the Christian community, underscoring the spirit of inclusivity and celebration.

In a post on the social media platform X, PM Modi shared: “Attended the Christmas celebrations at the residence of Union Minister George Kurian Ji. Also interacted with eminent members of the Christian community @GeorgekurianBjp.”

Kurian, who hails from Kerala, was inducted into the Union Cabinet on June 9, and his ministerial appointment is seen as an outreach to the Christian community.

A long-time BJP leader, Kurian is well-known for his calm demeanour and his extensive involvement in various capacities within the party. Christmas holds great religious and cultural significance for Christians, as it marks the birth of Jesus Christ, revered for his teachings of love, sacrifice, and compassion.

The occasion is commemorated with religious services, prayers, and carol singing, reflecting on the spiritual message of hope and humanity’s transformation through Christ’ sacrifice.
