Air India-Vistara merger becomes reality; Singapore Airlines to invest Rs 3,195 cr in integrated entity

Ahmedabad: Employees wave at a Vistara plane on the last day of the airlines operation before its integration with Air India, in Ahmedabad, Monday, Nov 11, 2024. UK 986 was Vistaras last domestic flight that took off from Mumbai to Delhi while its last international flight, UK 115 took off from the national capital for Singapore, on Monday night.

New Delhi:  Marking a significant consolidation in the fast-growing Indian aviation space, Air India on Tuesday completed the Vistara merger to create an integrated airline, partly owned by Singapore Airlines, that will be flying over 1,20,000 passengers daily and connect more than 90 destinations.

The completion of the much-awaited amalgamation, which was announced in November 2022, comes within six weeks of the integration of Air India Express and AIX Connect. The two mergers have created a full service carrier and a low-cost carrier of scale for the Tata Group, which is seeking to establish a “world class global aviation company with an Indian heart”. Earlier in the day, the nearly 10-year-old Vistara — a joint venture between Tatas and Singapore Airlines — flew into the sunset and its last flight was from Delhi to Singapore.

As part of the merger, Singapore Airlines (SIA) will invest an additional Rs 3,194.5 crore in the enlarged entity.

The enlarged Air India will operate over 5,600 weekly flights, connecting more than 90 domestic and international destinations with a fleet of 210 aircraft, according to an Air India release.

Also, the new entity will fly over 1,20,000 passengers every day and offers an extended worldwide connectivity to over 800 destinations through more than 75 codeshare and interline partners.

It is now the country’s largest international carrier and the second-largest domestic carrier.

“Post-merger, Air India Group operates a combined fleet of 300 aircraft covering 55 domestic and 48 international destinations, with 312 routes and 8,300 flights per week. The collective staff strength stands at over 30,000,” the release said.

While the Vistara flight code ‘UK’ has faded away, the airline’s flights will have the code starting with the prefix ‘AI2’ to help customers choose at the time of booking as Vistara was well regarded for its services whereas Air India, which is in the transformation phase, has been grappling with some service issues.

“The merger of Air India and Vistara completes the consolidation and restructuring phase of the Air India Group’s post-privatisation transformation journey, and is thus a significant milestone. Over the past two years, teams across the four airlines have worked closely together and with other stakeholders to ensure that the transition of people, assets, operations and, most importantly, customers, was as seamless as possible,” Air India Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Campbell Wilson said.

The iconic ‘Maharaja’, once synonymous with Air India for a long time, will remain in a different form in the merged entity. Around 4.5 million Club Vistara frequent flyer accounts have been transferred to Air India’s flying returns programme, which has been renamed as ‘Maharaja Club’. Amongst many other aspects, Air India said more than 4,000 vendor contracts have been consolidated and 2,70,000 customer bookings migrated.

UK115 flight from Delhi to Singapore was the last flight of Vistara with the code ‘UK’ while UK986 from Mumbai to Delhi was the carrier’s last domestic flight.

Starting a new chapter, the merged entity operated its first flight with the code ‘AI2286’ from Doha to Mumbai. In the domestic sector, the integrated entity’s first flight AI2984 took off from Mumbai to Delhi. All the four flights landed at their respective destinations early in the morning on Tuesday.

The Air India-Vistara merger also marks the second major airline industry consolidation in the country after 2006-2007. Now, Air India is the lone full service Indian carrier.

In 2006-07, Indian Airlines merged with Air India and Air Sahara merged with Jet Airways. During the same period, Air Deccan was amalgamated with Kingfisher Airlines.

Air India, Vistara, and AIX Connect together had a domestic market share of little over 29 per cent in September, as per latest official data.

Singapore Airlines (SIA) said the merger has been completed and Air India will be an associated company of the airline, adding that it will invest an additional Rs 3,194.5 crore in the enlarged entity.

The airline intends to fund the cash amount for the additional capital injection by way of SIA Group’s internal cash resources.

“A lower additional capital injection amount, expected at about Rs 31,945 million (equivalent to approximately USD 498 million). The expected additional capital injection amount remains unchanged to date, based on the current targeted share allotment and issuance date of November 21, 2024.

“There will be no change to SIA’s equity interest of about 25.1 per cent in the enlarged AI, arising from the lower additional capital injection amount,” it said in a filing to the Singapore Stock Exchange.

Mentioning about the transformation journey, Air India said Vihaan.AI programme has seen commitment to more than 500 new aircraft and the commencement of a USD 400 million interior retrofit programme for legacy aircraft, among others.

Tatas has a long association with the airlines industry dating back to the 1930s. Jehangir Ratanji Dadabhoy (JRD) Tata founded an airline in 1932 and named it Tata Airlines. In 1946, the aviation division of Tata Sons was listed as Air India and in 1953, Air India was nationalised.

2nd Hindu Priest Arrested In Bangladesh Amid Protests: ISKCON Member

Days after the arrest of Spiritual leader Chinmoy Krishna Das, another Hindu priest was arrested in Bangladesh’s Chattogram, sources said on Saturday. The arrested priest was identified as Shyam Das Prabhu, who reportedly went to meet Chinmoy Krishna Das in jail.

He was arrested without any official warrant, the sources said, adding that the practice allows authorities to detain someone and release them later.

Radharamn Das, Vice-President and Spokesperson, ISKCON Kolkata also posted about the monk’s arrest on X (formally Twitter) on Friday, and said, “Another Brahmachari Sri Shyam Das Prabhu was arrested by Chattogram Police today.”

Hindu Monk’s Arrest & Violence In Bangladesh

Hindu priest, Chinmoy Krishna Das, a former member of the International Society of Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) of Bangladesh, was arrested on Monday in connection with a sedition case. His arrest triggered protests by Hindu community members in various locations in Bangladesh, including in the capital Dhaka and Chattogram.

Chinmoy Krishna Das was denied bail by a Chattogram court on Tuesday, which followed clashes between the police and protestors demanding his release. Assistant public prosecutor Saiful Islam was killed in the clashes.

Bangladesh police have so far arrested nine persons in connection with the lawyer’s murder, police said on Saturday. They were arrested after a case was filed against 46 persons, mostly cleanliness workers belonging to the minority Hindu community.

Meanwhile, three Hindu temples were vandalised by a slogan-shouting mob on Friday in Chattogram, which has witnessed protests and violence since a former ISKCON member was booked under sedition charges.

The attack took place around 2:30 pm in the port city’s Harish Chandra Munsef Lane, where the Shantaneshwari Matri Temple, the nearby Shoni Temple, and the Shantaneshwari Kalibari Temple were targeted, news portal BDNews24.com reported.

“A group of several hundred slogan-shouting people threw brickbats at the temples, damaging the Shoni Temple and the gates of the other two temples,” the news portal quoted temple authorities as saying.

Kotwali Police Station chief Abdul Karim confirmed the attack, saying that assailants attempted to damage the temples.

Violence Against Minorities In Bangladesh

Chinmoy Krishna Das’s arrest came amid tensions over minority rights in Bangladesh, which has seen widespread political violence since former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s ouster. Since the ouster of former PM Sheikh Hasina, the new military-backed interim government led by Mohammed Yunus has faced criticism for failing to curb a spike in violence against minorities.

Hindus comprise approximately 8 per cent of Bangladesh’s 170 million people.

Iranian forces chased away US troops on high seas

“Without personnel and equipment, we approached the core of the Great Satan at the depth of the oceans and drove them away and cheered the name of Iran with authority,” Irani said during Friday prayers in Tehran.

He also noted that the popular Islamic Republic of Iran Army has an effective presence worldwide relying on its high knowledge and capabilities.

Meanwhile, he referred to Operation Morvarid (Pearl) in November 1980, which resulted in a decisive victory for the Iranian Navy during the Iraqi-imposed war.

The operation, he added, permanently maintained Iran’s authority in the Persian Gulf.

November 27 marks the Iranian Navy Day in remembrance of the bravery of the Iranian naval forces in the face of former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein.

In another address to mark the day in Mashhad on Friday, Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari, deputy chief of the Iranian Army for coordination, stressed Iran’s capabilities to build its required naval equipment.

“We currently have the capability to build destroyers, missile-armed ships, and submarines within the country, and all existing equipment, weapons, and smart munitions in this field are domestically produced,” he said, adding, “All naval equipment is indigenous, and we are at the cutting edge of maritime technology.”

Pointing to the Navy’s efforts to maintain security in international waters, he said that the Navy forces have ensured the security of maritime exchanges and have protected over 6,000 ships from pirates.

In recent years, Iran’s Navy has achieved self-sufficiency in manufacturing surface and sub-surface vessels. It has also increased its presence in international waters to protect naval routes and provide security for merchant vessels and tankers.

The Iranian naval forces have also staged military drills with different countries to promote their combat readiness.

They have also been involved in joint efforts aimed at countering piracy and maritime terrorism, exchanging information in naval rescue and relief operations as well as sharing operational and tactical experience to enhance the security and stability of international maritime trade.

Palestine still most important human cause: Iran FM spox.

In a post on his X account on the occasion of the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, Baghaei wrote, “#Palestine, the most universal human cause, remains the most outstanding crisis of our humanity and symbolizes unrealized rights & unfulfilled promises.”

“On International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, we hail their epic #resistance & resilience as they continue to endure extreme pain and suffering under long time brutal occupation & apartheid exacerbated by incessant genocidal attacks during the past 14 months. The ‘colonial erasure’ project is now violating Palestinians’ basic right to life in the most brutal way.”

“The world is legally and morally obliged to stand in solidarity, both in words and in action, with the Palestinian people in their just struggle for inalienable right of self-determination and to live in peace and dignity.”

Israel waged a genocidal war on the besieged Gaza on October 7, 2023, after the Palestinian Hamas Resistance group carried out a historic operation against the occupying entity in retaliation for the regime’s intensified atrocities against the Palestinian people.

Israel has imposed a complete siege on the densely populated territory, cutting off fuel, electricity, food, and water to the more than two million Palestinians living there.

Warangal Architect makes history: Shashank Bhoopathi chosen as Telangana’s first ISRO Space Tutor

Hyderabad: Shashank Bhoopathi, an architect from Warangal, has been selected as Telangana’s first Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) Space Tutor.

Recently, ISRO selected a few Space Tutors across the country to promote space education. Bhoopathi was the candidate chosen from Telangana. Bhoopathi graduated in Architecture from JNAFAU University, founded Ancient Technologies Design Research Lab to explore how ancient knowledge can solve modern challenges.

His work involves studying ancient architectural sites, developing theories based on their design principles, and building prototypes. These prototypes are designed to be integrated into future space missions, aiming to make space exploration more efficient. Bhoopathi’s projects include modular spacecrafts, lightweight and collapsible astronaut housing, and innovative satellite designs.

Space Research Architecture is a rare field, with very few experts globally and only two companies in India. Bhoopathi’s company is the only one in South India, making his work even more significant. His innovative designs have earned him invitations to universities across India, where he conducts workshops and shares his vision for blending ancient and modern science.

As an ISRO Space Tutor, Bhoopathi says he plans to inspire students through workshops and seminars. Priyanka Gandhi to hold her first public meeting in Wayanad today

Priyanka Gandhi

New Delhi: Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi, who recently took oath as the Wayanad MP, is set to address her constituency for the first time on Saturday after her historic victory in the just-concluded bypolls.

The MP will hold a joint public meeting with her brother and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi.

The meeting is scheduled to take place on Saturday at Mukkam in the Thiruvambadi Assembly constituency of Kozhikode district. Priyanka Gandhi clinched her electoral victory in the Wayanad Lok Sabha bypoll with a commanding margin of 4,10,931 votes.

Later in the day, receptions will be held for Priyanka Gandhi at Karulai in Nilambur, Wandoor, and Edavanna in Eranad by 2.15 P.M., 3.30 P.M. and 4.30 P.M. respectively.

Priyanka Gandhi officially assumed her role as Wayanad MP amidst loud cheers and chants of “Bharat Jodo” from Congress supporters earlier on Thursday.

Holding a booklet of the Indian Constitution, a symbolic gesture popularised by the INDIA bloc during this Parliament session, she exuded confidence as she took the oath.

The bypoll was necessitated after Rahul Gandhi vacated the seat earlier this year. During the campaign, the primary question revolved around whether Priyanka could surpass her brother’s record-breaking margin.

Priyanka’s victory marks a significant moment in her political journey, coming nearly 20 years after she first campaigned for her mother, Sonia Gandhi, in Raebareli and her brother in Amethi during the 2004 Lok Sabha elections.

Her debut as an elected representative is seen as a pivotal step in solidifying the Congress’ presence in Kerala and revitalising the party’s fortunes at the national level.

Telangana’s once pro-active government now specialises in ‘U’ turns

One step forward, two steps backward has been the functioning style that is becoming all the more identifiable with the Congress as it completes one year in power

Telangana’s once pro-active government now specialises in ‘U’ turns

Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy

Hyderabad: Telangana was once praised by world leaders for having a pro-active, fast moving (remember Foxconn Chairman Young Liu’s ‘Telangana Speed’ remark) and foresighted government. Those were the days when the BRS was at the helm. That image, however, is fast crumbling. The Congress dispensation in the State now appears to be fast building a dubious recognition for flip flop decisions over different issues. One step forward, two steps backward has been the functioning style that is becoming all the more identifiable with the Congress as it completes one year in power.

Right from the decision to reject the Rs.100 crore donation from the Adani Group, to the retracted orders on assessment of Class 10 students, the ‘U’ turn on decisions taken by the State government in the last one week alone reflects the state of governance in Telangana.

On Tuesday, Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy said the State government has decided to turn down the Rs.100 crore donations for Skills University announced by Adani Group. This was after earlier defending the investments and donation from Adani Group.

During the recent assembly elections in Maharashtra, the Chief Minister had openly defended Adani Group’s investments in Telangana. However, soon after Congress MP Rahul Gandhi spoke against deals with the Adani Group, Revanth Reddy’s bus with Adani screeched to a halt and the donation was “rejected”.

Soon after this came the Lagacherla embarrassment. This was after several attempts to put up a brave face against the relentless fight put up by tribal farmers in Lagacherla and other villages against the Chief Minister’s pet Pharma Village project in his own constituency. With attempts to pull conspiracy theories out of the air against the BRS backfiring, and national agencies including the National Human Rights Commission descending on Lagacherla, Revanth Reddy first tried to say that there was no proposal for a pharma village and came up with an industrial corridor story.

Even that version changed with the State government withdrawing the controversial land acquisition notification on Friday. Interestingly, on Saturday, the government took another U-turn, and a fresh notification was issued for acquiring land, this time with the announced purpose being a multipurpose industrial park.

The U-turns did not end there. On Thursday, the State government issued a memo to award 100 percent marks to external assessments in SSC public examinations without any marks for internal assessments from the academic year 2024-25. The orders did not stand straight even for 24 hours. On Friday, the government took a U turn on awarding 100 percent marks to external assessments and decided to retain the existing assessment system i.e., 80 percent marks to external assessment and 20 percent to internal assessment for the academic year 2024-25 only.

The government also decided to implement allotment of 100 percent marks to external assessment in the SSC examination from the academic year 2025-26.

Repeated U-turns make a circle, and that is how the Revanth Reddy administration appears to be functioning.,
