"What Happened, Please Tell": 3 Chilling Calls To Kolkata Doctor's Parents

The rape and murder of the Kolkata doctor has shaken the country and sparked massive protests

Kolkata:

It was just another morning at the middle class household in north Kolkata. The daughter who had made her parents proud by becoming a doctor and was studying further, was at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital for a long shift. Around 11.30 pm the previous night, she had called her mother and spoken to her, as always. Her mother did not prolong the call. She would have, had she known it was her last.

On the morning of August 9, three calls within half an hour shattered their little world and set them off on a fight for justice. NDTV has accessed the audio of the calls to the parents the morning after the 31-year-old doctor’s rape and murder at the Kolkata hospital. Their voices capture the shock and confusion two elderly parents endured long before reaching the hospital to find their daughter’s brutalised corpse.

The First Call

The parents of the rape-murder victim have told the court that the first call came at 10.53 am. The caller was a woman, who has since been identified as the Assistant Superintendent of the hospital. The Kolkata Police timeline submitted in Supreme Court says that the official called the parents at this time and “informed them”, but does not elaborate on the conversation. The cops’ timeline mentions only one call. The three audio files, however, reveal that three calls were made and it was only in the last call that the victim’s parents were told that she had died.

Victim’s Father: What has happened, please tell me

Caller: Her condition is very bad, please come as soon as possible

Victim’s Father: Please tell us what has happened

Caller: The doctor will say that, you come fast.

Victim’s Father: Who are you?

Caller: I am the assistant super, not doctor

Victim’s Father: There are no doctors there?

Caller: I am the assistant super. We have brought your daughter to the Emergency. You come and contact us.

Victim’s Mother: What happened to her, she was on duty

Caller: You come fast, as soon as possible.

The Second Call

In the second call, a male voice is heard. By then, the parents have already left for the hospital.

Caller: I am speaking from RG Kar (hospital)

Victim’s Mother: Yes, please say

Caller: You are coming, right?

Victim’s Mother: Yes, we are coming. How is she now?

Caller: You come, we will talk, come to RG Kar Hospital’s chest department HOD

Victim’s mother: Okay

The Third Call

It was in the third call that the victim’s parents were told she had died by suicide. This has come up repeatedly in court and judges have asked why the parents were misled. This call was from Assistant Superintendent, who made the first call.

Victim’s Father: Hello

Caller: This is the Assistant Super.

Victim’s Father: Yes

Caller: The matter is that your daughter has probably died by suicide. She is dead, police are here, we are all here, please come as soon as possible.

Victim’s Father: We are coming, right away

Victim’s Mother (screams in the background): My daughter is no more.

The hospital administration’s communication with the victim’s parents is one aspect of this horrifying incident that has repeatedly come under scrutiny in both the Calcutta High Court and the Supreme Court. In their petition in the high court, the parents said they were made to wait for three hours. They suspect that this delay was intentional.

Kolkata Police, however, has contested this. Their timeline claims that the parents reached the hospital at 1 pm and they were taken to the seminar hall, where the body was found, 10 minutes later. The courts have also questioned why the hospital administration, led by then principal Dr Sandip Ghosh, did not file a formal police complaint and the cops had to register an unnatural death case. An FIR was filed only late at night after the victim’s father filed a formal complaint.

Speaking to NDTV, the victim’s father had described the devastating moment when they saw her daughter’s body. “Only I know what I went through when I saw her. There were no clothes on her body. She was only draped in a bedsheet. Her legs were apart, with one hand on her head,” he had said.

Iran’s top general vows ‘calculated’ response to Israel

Major General Mohammad Baqeri, the chief of staff of the Iranian Armed Forces

The chief of staff of Iran’s armed forces has reiterated the country’s intention to give a “calculated” response to the Israeli assassination of late Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh.

Major General Mohammad Baqeri made the remarks on Wednesday in reference to the much-anticipated retaliation for the Israeli assassination of Haniyeh, which occurred in Tehran in late July.

Iran and resistance factions in region have vowed to respond to the Israeli attacks after the failure of the UN Security Council to take any action to punish the regime.

General Baqeri said the Israeli regime is now in a precarious situation and is ready to commit any act of atrocity following the October 7 attacks by the Hamas resistance movement, as it sees itself on the verge of collapse.

“Today we witness the crisis situation in the region following the Al-Aqsa storm and the Zionist regime is worried over its existence and is in dangerous conditions, so it won’t spare any criminal move to continue its shameful life.”

On the US role in the region, General Baqeri said the US power is certainly not comparable to five years ago, as the regime is on the decline and is struggling to restore its power.

In his remarks, the general also said Iran’s armed forces have a very crucial responsibility to boost military preparedness and they should not waste a second in improving rapid response capabilities, strengthening infrastructures, and increasing the quality of products.

Michael Olise Called Up To Full France Squad For Nations League Matches

English-born winger Michael Olise was rewarded for his impressive performances for France at the Olympics by being called up to the full French national team Thursday for the start of their UEFA Nations League campaign next month. The 22-year-old, who was born and brought up in London to a Nigerian father and French-Algerian mother, was arguably the standout player in Thierry Henry‘s France team that won the Olympic silver medal at the Paris Games earlier this month.

He has also recently joined Bayern Munich from Crystal Palace for a reported 60 million euros ($66.6m), off the back of scoring 10 goals in 19 games in the Premier League last season.

“Michael did great things with Thierry Henry’s Olympic team and he has moved up into a new category with his transfer to Bayern Munich,” coach Didier Deschamps told reporters.

“It is quite logical that he should now come with us. He still has progress to make but potentially he has a lot of quality.”

France host Italy at the Parc des Princes in Paris next Friday, September 6, before taking on Belgium three days later in Lyon.

Olise is not the only member of the Olympic squad to make the step up, with 23-year-old Borussia Moenchengladbach midfielder Manu Kone also getting the call from Deschamps.

There is also a return to the squad for Chelsea centre-back Wesley Fofana, 23, whose only cap so far came in a Euro 2024 qualifier against Gibraltar over a year ago.

Kylian Mbappe will feature for France for the first time since making his debut for new club Real Madrid.

Players who went to Euro 2024 in Germany — where France reached the semi-final — but have been left out this time, include Inter Milan defender Benjamin Pavard, Bayern winger Kingsley Coman, and midfielder Adrien Rabiot.

The latter was a regular at the Euros but his absence from the squad is related to the fact he currently has no club after leaving Juventus when his contract expired.

Veteran striker Olivier Giroud, now playing for Major League Soccer outfit Los Angeles FC, retired from international duty after the European Championship.

Les Bleus, who won the Nations League in 2021, will also play Israel in League A Group 2, with remaining matches taking place in October and November.

France squad:

Goalkeepers: Alphonse Areola (West Ham United/ENG), Mike Maignan (AC Milan/ITA), Brice Samba (Lens)

Defenders: Jonathan Clauss (Nice), Wesley Fofana (Chelsea/ENG), Theo Hernandez (AC Milan/ITA), Ibrahima Konate (Liverpool/ENG), Jules Kounde (Barcelona/ESP), Ferland Mendy (Real Madrid/ESP), William Saliba (Arsenal/ENG), Dayot Upamecano (Bayern Munich/GER)

Midfielders: Youssouf Fofana (AC Milan/ITA), N’Golo Kante (Al Ittihad/KSA), Manu Kone (Borussia Moenchengladbach/GER), Aurelien Tchouameni (Real Madrid/ESP), Warren Zaire-Emery (Paris Saint-Germain)

Forwards: Bradley Barcola, Ousmane Dembele (both Paris Saint-Germain), Antoine Griezmann (Atletico Madrid/ESP), Randal Kolo Muani (Paris Saint-Germain), Kylian Mbappe (Real Madrid/ESP), Michael Olise (Bayern Munich/GER), Marcus Thuram (Inter Milan/ITA)

Case Filed Against Another Malayalam Director; Special Team To Probe Siddique

An SIT has been formed to look into rape allegation against actor Siddique

New Delhi:

A special investigation team (SIT) will look into rape allegations against Malayalam actor Siddique. A first information report (FIR) has also been filed against director VK Prakash as the #MeToo storm hits Malayalam cinema, with several actors accused of rape and sex harassment.

So far 10 FIRs have been filed against actors and directors in the Malayalam cinema #MeToo movement.

The allegations inside Mollywood – as Malayalam cinema is known – surfaced after the Justice K Hema Committee released a report on sexual harassment faced by actors.

The Thiruvananthapuram City District Crime Branch is in charge of the SIT that will look into the allegations against Siddique. The team includes the Museum Police.

The survivor’s statement was recorded today, after which the decision to form the SIT was taken.

In the FIR against VK Prakash, the case was filed based on the confidential statement of the survivor to the Kollam police.

In another development, a local court told police not to arrest rape accused actor-politician K Mukesh till September 3. Mr Mukesh, a CPI(M) MLA from Kollam, had approached the court seeking protection from arrest after the Kerala Police filed a rape case against him.

Well-known names of Malayalam cinema, including Mukesh and Jayasurya have been charged by the police for alleged rape and sexual assault of a woman colleague.

Akasa Air Served Showcause Notice Over Regulatory Violations

New Delhi:

Akasa Air has been issued a show-cause notice by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation over regulatory breaches identified during a recent review of flight operations.

Spot audits by the aviation regulator had revealed that practical training sessions for crew were being simulated and completed without mandated regulatory approvals, raising significant concern regarding adequacy of training standards and operational readiness.

The company has one week to provide an explanation, the DGCA has said.

Akasa began operations in August 2022; its first flight was from Mumbai to Ahmedabad. In March the company began its first international service, flying from Mumbai to Doha. According to government data, Akasa carried over six lakh passengers in July for a market share of around 4.7 per cent.

Last week co-founder and CEO Vinay Dube said he expected Akasa Air to achieve profitability within the next three years. This is despite running into losses of more than Rs 2,400 crore in its first two.

In an interview with the Economic Times, Mr Dube also said he plans to go public by 2028.

DGCA’s Notice To SpiceJet

Meanwhile, earlier today the DGCA also issued an “enhanced surveillance” notice to SpiceJet.

Earlier this month the aviation regulator – acting on reports the carrier had to cancel flights from Dubai over non-payment of dues – conducted a special audit that revealed “certain deficiencies”.

As a result the DGCA said the airline, “has once again, and with immediate effect, been placed under enhanced surveillance”, explaining this means increased spot checks and/or night-time audits with a view to ensure operational safety.
