Stealth Disease Claims Four Lives In Milan, Origin Remains A Mystery

Stealth Disease Claims Four Lives In Milan, Origin Remains A Mystery

Legionnaires’ disease, a serious pneumonia caused by the Legionella bacteria.

A recent outbreak of Legionnaires’ disease in Milan, Italy, has killed at least four people and hospitalised several dozen more, according to The Metro. The health authorities say that at least 53 cases have been confirmed in two regions inside the Milan metropolitan area of a severe lung infection.

In response, local authorities are taking urgent measures to control the situation, including deploying chemicals to disinfect the city’s water supply. However, despite extensive testing of water supply systems in private residences and cooling towers, the exact source of the outbreak remains unidentified, according to the news report.

The continuous investigation of finding the source of infection has left the city in great suspense, and sensitivity has developed regarding what efforts should be present to prevent further cases.

What is Legionnaires’ disease?

According to a Washington Post report, Legionnaires’ is a serious form of pneumonia caused by the bacteria Legionella. The pathogen can also cause Pontiac fever, a flu-like illness considered to be a less serious disease.

The bacteria was first discovered decades ago when a mysterious illness sickened dozens attending a 1976 convention of the American Legion in Philadelphia. In that outbreak, 221 people were infected, and 34 died.

The disease initially alarmed health officials, who feared the sickness might spread beyond the conferencegoers. Ultimately, scientists found the bacteria bred in the water of a cooling tower of the air-conditioning system at the Bellevue-Stratford Hotel, where the conference was being held.

How does Legionnaires’ disease spread?

Legionella grow in biofilms lining water pipes, pipes that lead to showers, drinking faucets, and HVAC systems for cooling, said Panagis Galiatsatos, an associate professor of medicine in pulmonary and critical care medicine at the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Centre at Johns Hopkins University.

Legionella can even grow in the tanks that hold windscreen wiper fluid in a car, according to the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention.

People can become infected by breathing in mist or swallowing water into the lungs that’s contaminated with the bacteria. “Less commonly, people can get sick by aspiration of drinking water containing Legionella,” a CDC spokeswoman said Tuesday.

Pezeshkian: Iran’s policy is peace but to change tack under pressure

President Masoud Pezeshkian says Iran condemns any aggression in the world, stressing that the Islamic Republic’s principled policy is to foster peace and friendship, prevent tensions and interact with world countries.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran has always tried to spread peace and friendship, condemned aggression anywhere in the world, and is ready to cooperate to stop wars, violence and insecurity in the world,” Pezeshkian told Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre over phone.

The Iranian president criticized the US for violating the 2015 nuclear deal, officially known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), and complained about the European parties’ failure to fulfill their obligations under the accord.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran fulfilled all its obligations under the JCPOA, but it was the United States that, in addition to breaking the agreement and unilateral withdrawal from it resorted to increasing pressure and sanctions against our country and nation and the European countries unfortunately did not implement even one clause of their commitments, contrary to expectations,” Pezeshkian noted.

“Our policy is peace and friendship, avoiding tension and conflict, and interacting and expanding relations with all the countries of the world, but if our country is forced to do something under sanctions and pressure, then our approach and behavior will definitely move in another direction,” he added.

He denounced the double standards of the US and certain Western countries vis-à-vis human rights and democracy.

“America and some Western countries accuse other countries of violating human rights because of the mistreatment of one person, but they are not only silent toward the bloodshed against tens of thousands of innocent women, children, young and old in Gaza and the bombing of civilian areas, schools and hospitals by the Zionist regime, they also provide financial support and weapons to this regime. Which criterion and logic is this compatible with?”

Pezeshkian appreciated the positions of the Norwegian government in support of the Palestinian nation, calling on the Norwegian prime minister to work more closely with other European countries to immediately stop Israeli atrocities against oppressed Palestinians in Gaza.

For his part, the Norwegian prime minister described relations between Oslo and Tehran as friendly and historical, stating that Norway has always considered Iran as a friend and wished for the development and prosperity of the Iranian nation and will continue to do so.

Støre also expressed concern about the uptick in tensions in the West Asia region, especially Israeli offensives against the residents of the besieged Gaza Strip.

“We have condemned Israel’s war against Gaza and its disastrous consequences. Norway, along with Ireland and Spain, was among the first European countries to have recognized the Palestinian people’s right to establish an independent state. We hope these bitter and unfortunate developments will come to an end as soon as possible,” he noted.

Zionist regime needs to await big surprises: al-Houthi

Secretary General of Yemen’s Ansarullah Movement Abdul-Malik al-Houthi delivered a speech on Thursday about the latest developments in the region, especially the continued aggression of the Zionist regime in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank.

The developments in the Gaza Strip and its expansion to the West Bank are solid evidence that once again showed the true nature of the Zionist enemy, he said, adding that Israeli invasion of the West Bank in the occupied territories and Gaza Strip shows the real process of drawing a new scene in Palestine with the support of the United States.

The continuation of the Zionist regime’s crime with all their assertiveness and genocide is a disgrace for the mankind, al-Houthi emphasized.

He also referred to the desecration of the Holy Quran by the Zionist forces in one of the mosques in the north of Gaza Strip and stated, “Whoever remains indifferent towards the Zionist forces’ tearing the Holy Quran, has no faith. Anyone who neglects the holy things and neglects them may also neglect their reputation, honor and country, and this is a dangerous situation that Muslims should reconsider it.”

The Secretary General of Yemen’s Ansarullah Movement pointed out that the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip are suffering from severe and continuous hunger and famine, while some Arab regimes are providing food to the enemy.

In order to deceive public opinion, the US government claims to support the ceasefire negotiations in the Gaza Strip, but its deception is evident and it [US] does not stop providing Israeli regime with the most lethal types of weapons to kill children and women in Gaza, the leader of Yemen’s Ansarullah Resistance Movement added.

Al Houthi further said that the Yemeni armed forces will continue to increase their military capabilities, warning the Zionist regime to await big surprises.

He further said that the sailing of the ships related to the Zionist regime, the UK, and the US in the Red Sea has decreased significantly, adding that the Yemeni armed forces will see no limit to the extent of their operations in support of Palestinians.

“Big surprises are on the way that the enemy does not expect,” the Ansarullah leader further stressed.

Al Houthi further said that Iran’s response to the martyrdom of Ismail Haniyeh, the Hamas political chief, is definite, adding that preparations for the retaliation agains tthe Israeli enemy is underway and the response time will be surprising to the regime.
