Editorial: Boost for geriatric care

The growing population of elderly people in India poses a new set of challenges in geriatric care. This calls for more public investments in healthcare, housing and pensions. By 2050, India’s elderly population is expected to double, touching about 319 million. This would mean that one in every five Indians will be over the age of 60. Obviously, this will have a profound implication not only for our healthcare system but for society at large. Against this backdrop, the expansion of the Ayushman Bharat health insurance scheme to cover all senior citizens above 70 years marks a significant step towards alleviating the financial burden of healthcare on the elderly. However, to ensure sustainability, the expansion of the scheme must be complemented with a comprehensive primary healthcare system that is focused on prevention and health promotion at every age. This will allow people to arrive at an older age healthier and stay healthy longer. With an ageing population with inadequate health coverage, the expansion of the scheme for those over 70 years across all income groups is expected to have a significant impact, adding nearly 4 crore new beneficiaries to the scheme. According to the Longitudinal Ageing Study in India (LASI), India’s population over the age of 60 years is estimated to increase from 8.6% in 2011 to 19.5% by 2050.

The current allocation of Rs 7,300 crore for the scheme, with only a Rs 100 crore increase from the previous Budget, raises concerns about the adequacy of funding for such an expansion. As healthcare costs for the elderly continue to rise, the scheme’s sustainability and its ability to provide comprehensive coverage to all senior citizens will be a critical area of focus for policymakers. In a country where a visit to a private hospital pushes over 5 crore people below the poverty line every year because of the exorbitant treatment costs, the Ayushman Bharat scheme amounts to significant government intervention to alleviate the suffering of the people. It is expected to significantly reduce out-of-pocket expenditure for healthcare by covering nearly 40% of the population, including secondary and tertiary hospitalisations. The country needs to chart a transformative multi-pronged path, with supportive institutions such as the private sector, academia and civil society, to put in place a robust social security net for the elderly. There is a need to make substantial investments, both in terms of finances and human resources, in geriatric care. It acquires urgency given the steady weakening of traditional support systems over the decades and the rise of nuclear families. At present, most medical colleges don’t have specialised training wings in geriatrics. This gap needs to be addressed immediately keeping in view the future demand. Geriatric care is now confined to some tertiary hospitals in urban areas and is prohibitively expensive.

Pro-Palestinian protest in Netherlands challenges govt. stance on Gaza war

Large crowds gathered in Amsterdam, the capital of the Netherlands, to protest against Israel’s ongoing military operations in Gaza, condemning the Dutch government for its failure to call out Israel’s actions.

Hundreds of pro-Palestinian protesters, holding anti-war banners and chanting slogans like “Free Palestine”, marched through the streets, urging the Dutch government to take action against Israel’s actions in Gaza.

“Since October, I’ve been going to all the demonstrations with my kids because that’s all we can do. I can’t believe what I’m seeing with my eyes. I hope this, Inshallah (God willing in Arabic), will end soon because this is not normal. For almost a year, we’ve been watching blown-up children, blown-up mothers, fathers. I don’t have words. It breaks me. It breaks us all. This just has to stop now,” said a protester named Marleen.

“We have to stop supporting the Israeli regime and we have to stop providing weapons. It is the end of humanity, and as human beings, we have to make a decision now before it’s too late,” said Ramin, another protester.

The Palestinian death toll from the ongoing Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip has risen to 40,099, with a total of 92,609 people wounded since the latest round of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict began on October 7, 2023, according to health authorities in the besieged Palestinian enclave on Sunday.

"Going On Record…": Zaheer's On IPL Rule; Differs With Kohli, Rohit

Zaheer Khan feels ‘Impact Player’ rule has given a huge boost to young Indian players.© BCCI

Despite calls for the ‘Impact Player’ rule to be removed, there is still no official word on whether it will be in place for the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) season or not. Several top stars, including Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, have suggested that they are not big fans of the Impact Player rule. However, some players have also claimed that the ‘Impact Player’ should keep its place for the upcoming season and beyond. India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin backed the Impact Player rule, saying that it adds a bit more value for “strategy”.

“Why I think the Impact Player rule is not so bad is because it gives a little more value for strategy. The other side of that argument is it doesn’t encourage all-rounders. But no one is stopping them,” Ashwin said on Kris Srikkanth’s YouTube show Cheeky Cheeka.

Now, former India pacer Zaheer Khan, who was appointed as the mentor of the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), has also thrown his weight behind Ashwin. Zaheer suggested that the ‘Impact Player’ rule has given a huge boost to young Indian players.

“There has been a debate around the impact sub rule. I’m going on record to say that I’m all for it. It has definitely given opportunities to a lot of uncapped Indian talents. It is something you will see this in the mega auction when teams will be looking at them,” Zaheer said at a press conference organised by LSG.

“That opportunity goes a long way with improving Indian cricket on the whole. The time spent in match time, it’s something you cannot beat. That’s the biggest plus.” “As far as all-rounders are concerned, right now there is no space for a half all-rounder because of the impact sub (rule). But if you are a genuine all-rounder, (then) no one can stop you. There is always going to be a value addition with the ability with bat and ball,” he added.

Meanwhile, Kohli said last season that the ‘Impact Player’ rule has disrupted the game’s balance while India skipper Rohit admitted he was “not a big fan” of it.

US Open: Swiatek saves three set points to defeat Rakhimova in first round

New York: 1221694of Poland survived a scare at the US Open on Tuesday, overcoming a gritty challenge from lucky loser Kamilla Rakhimova in the first round of women’s singles at the Arthur Ashe Stadium here.

Swiatek, the 2022 US Open winner, saved three set points in the second-set tiebreak before advancing 6-4, 7-6(6) in 1 hour and 52 minutes at the Flushing Meadows.

Rakhimova held some initiative in their first encounter, which initially threatened to be a one-sided rout after Swiatek raced out to a 4-0 lead for the loss of just three points. But Rakhimova, who took Aryna Sabalenka to three sets in Washington four weeks ago, pushed the Pole hard for the rest of the match.

Swiatek, who has won five majors so far, was unable to close out the World No.104 serving at 5-4 in the second set and ultimately needed to squeak past in a tiebreak that went down to the wire. This was her 80th win in Grand Slam matches so far.

Swiatek, who has won the French Open in 2020, 2022, 2023 and 2024, is bidding to add a second US Open crown to her 2022 title. Her 21st victory in 22 career Grand Slam first-round matches sets up a four-time, second-round clash with either Daria Saville or qualifier Ena Shibahara, the former doubles No.4 who has turned her focus to singles this year.

In other first-round matches on Tuesday, Caroline Dolehide of the United States stunned 11th-seed compatriot Danielle Collins 1-6, 7-5, 6-4 while 31st-seeded Katie Boulter of the United Kingdom too needed three sets to overcome Aliaksandra Sasnovich 7-5, 6-2, 6-1 and 25th seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova defeated Taylah Preston of Australia 6-2, 6-0 in just over one hour.

Amazon India cuts selling fees by up to 12% for festive season

Mumbai: Amazon India on Saturday announced an up to 12 per cent reduction in selling fees across multiple product categories on the marketplace ahead of the festive season.

The reductions in fees, which is effective from September 9, will enable sellers to expand their product portfolio on the platform besides providing a boost to growth, Amazon India said.

“With the changes, sellers on Amazon India will benefit from a drop in selling fees, ranging from 3-12 per cent, across various product categories”, the company said.

The new rate card will particularly benefit sellers offering products priced below Rs 500, it said.

“At Amazon, we are invested in supporting businesses of all sizes, from small and medium businesses to emerging entrepreneurs to established brands. The fee reduction is directly in response to feedback from our sellers, especially small businesses,” Amit

Nanda, Director Selling Partner Services at Amazon India, said.

While the timing of the fee cuts aligns with the festive season, these changes are not temporary measures, the company said.

The reduction in fee will give sellers an opportunity to optimise their operations in time for the Diwali shopping rush as well as beyond the festivities.

“Sellers, particularly those selling affordable products, will experience a significant decrease in fees on Amazon. This will provide them with an opportunity to reinvest in their business for accelerated growth,” Nanda added.

Kamala Harris Unveils $50 Million "Fearless" Ad Campaign Against Trump

Kamala Harris Unveils $50 Million 'Fearless' Ad Campaign Against Trump

The First ad in campaign shows images of Kamala Harris as a little girl following her progression (File)

Washington:

Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris launched a $50 million advertising blitz on Tuesday, capitalizing on the momentum of a fledgling campaign against Republican rival Donald Trump with a one-minute spot titled “Fearless.”

It was Harris’ first big ad buy since consolidating support for the Democratic nomination after President Joe Biden dropped out of the race on July 21 and endorsed her.

In addition to garnering the backing of big-money donors, Harris has sparked newfound energy among groups such as young voters that Biden had been struggling to win over.

Public opinion polls in the last week have shown Harris, 59, closing the gap with 78-year-old Trump, who still leads in some national surveys.

The ads will be rolled out on television as well as streaming and social channels across election battleground states in the weeks before the Democratic National Convention that starts on Aug. 19.

The first ad in the campaign begins with images of Harris as a little girl and follows her progression to a prosecutor, attorney general and U.S. vice president. “The one thing Kamala Harris has always been: fearless,” the ad says.

Since stepping into her new role, Harris has focused on Trump’s felony convictions in a hush-money trial involving a porn star and the other criminal charges he faces, and portrayed him as responsible for a wave of anti-abortion measures in Republican-led states around the country.

The Harris campaign’s ad buy dwarfed the $10 million advertising buy announced by Trump’s campaign on Monday, to be launched in six battleground states this week as it tries to counter a surge of voter enthusiasm and donations for Harris.

That was Trump’s biggest ad buy since January.

Iranian president: ‘We are looking for removal of illegal sanctions’

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian says his government is looking for ways to get illegal sanctions removed that have been imposed against the Islamic Republic.

Pezeshkian made the remarks on Tuesday while speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a ceremony held at the Foreign Ministry premises to honor and introduce the new foreign minister.

“The actions of enemies against our country are cruel. We adhered to our commitments and they must stick to their commitments,” Pezeshkian said.

He said that strengthening and developing relations with neighbors is one of the government’s priorities.

“Connections and development of relations [with neighbors] make sanctions ineffective,” the president added.

Pezeshkian said his government’s priorities are based on the policies of the Leader of the Islamic Revolution which is establishing ties and doing other affairs with countries with honor, wisdom and in Iran’s interest.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi also made brief remarks.

“The most important priorities of his ministry are opening the way and removing obstacles in the economic field, the honor and pride of Iran and Iranians in all fields, as well as securing national interests and helping the country’s national security,” he said.

Earlier in the day, the new president and other members of his cabinet met with the Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, where he said that maintaining national unity and keeping people happy with the government policies is the best way to defeat the oppressive US and EU sanctions.

“If unity is achieved inside the country and among the Islamic Ummah, the United States, Europe and other countries that cruelly support the crimes of the genocidal Zionist regime will fail,” he said

“The people’s satisfaction with the officials depends on their behavior with the people,” he added.

On Friday, Araghchi said the government was given a mission by the Leader of the Islamic Revolution to neutralize illegal sanctions imposed on the Islamic Republic and their possible impacts on the Iranian nation.

“Our foreign policy will be active and not passive. We’ll try to be present on international forums. If a new order is being formed, we should not be passive. We must play a role for our interests, for the region and the Islamic world,” said the foreign minister, a former nuclear negotiator.

Araghchi said that Leader of the Islamic Revolution emphasized two missions: “The first mission is to neutralize sanctions, which the whole government should follow. Our first goal is to neutralize the sanctions and its impacts on the people.”

The new Iranian foreign minister added, “Our priority is our neighbors. Our second priority is to expand the field of diplomacy to Africa and East Asia. The third priority is the countries that stood by Iran in difficult situations.”
