T20 WC: South Africa finishes undefeated in Super Eights with three wins in three matches

St John’s: In a fine show of nerves and calm, Marco Jansen and Kagiso Rabada defied heroic spells by Roston Chase and Alzarri Joseph to extend their unbeaten run in the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup to seven matches and reaching the semifinals with a three-wicket win over West Indies at Antigua on Monday.

With this victory, South Africa has ended their Super Eights campaign undefeated, with three wins in three matches. England is the other team to move to the semifinals, with two wins and a loss in three matches. West Indies, the hosts of the competition, have been knocked out, with just a win and two losses to their name in the Super Eights.

In the run-chase of 136 runs, South Africa started with a bang as Quinton de Kock hammered spinner Akael Hossein for three fours in the first over, with some fine lofted hits and pulls.

However in the next over, Proteas was pushed on the backfoot as all-rounder Andre Russell got Reeza Hendricks caught by Nicholas Pooran for a golden duck to start off the over while the over concluded with De Kock being caught by Sherfane Rutherford for 12 in seven balls. SA was 15/2 in two overs. The rain interrupted action at this point.

After the game was resumed, South Africa’s fresh target was 123 runs in 17 overs, which meant they still needed 108 runs in 15 overs.

Tristan Stubbs and skipper Aiden Markram resumed the proceedings, with both batters striking some clean boundaries. At the end of the powerplay in five overs, SA was at 41/2, with Markram (18*) and Stubbs (11*) unbeaten.

Markram’s horror T20 WC with the bat continued as pacer Alzarri Joseph got him caught by Kyle Mayers at mid-off for 18 in 15 balls, with two fours. SA was 42/3 in 5.2 overs.

SA reached their 50-run mark in six overs.

Klaasen and Stubbs changed the complexion of the game, with the former taking on West Indies’ key spinner Gudakesh Motie and hitting him for three fours and a six.

Joseph ended this threatening stand between Klaasen and Stubbs, with Pooran taking a fine catch to remove Klaasen for 22 in 10 balls, with three fours and a six. SA was 77/4 in eight overs.

Stubbs and Miller carried the chase forward, however, the run flow slowed down. The pressure ultimately got the best of South Africa, as David Miler was cleaned up for four runs by Roston Chase. SA was 94/5 in 12 overs, needing 29 runs to win in five overs.

SA reached the 100-run mark in 13 overs, needing 23 more runs in four overs.

Stubbs’s resilient knock of 29 runs in 27 balls was ended by Chase, who was having a wonderful outing.

Mayers took the catch to reduce SA to 100/6 in 13.1 overs.
Windies bowlers bowled really well, taking the match down the wire with 13 runs needed in 12 balls. Chase got his third wicket, removing Keshav Maharaj for two runs in six balls, with Alzarri taking a catch near long-off. SA was 110/7 in 15.2 overs.

In the final over, SA needed five runs, thanks to a four by Kagiso Rabada to end the 16th over.

Proteas completed the run-chase successfully, with Jansen smashing the match-winning six on the first ball of the final over by Obed McCoy. SA ended at 124/7, with Jansen (21*) and Rabada (5*) unbeaten.
Chase (3/12) was the top bowler for West Indies, with Russell and Joseph also taking two wickets.

Earlier, South Africa left-arm seamer Tabraiz Shamsi’s magnificent bowling performance of 3/27 restricted West Indies to 135/8 in 20 overs at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium on Monday.

Proteas skipper Aiden Markram won the toss and opted to bowl first in an all-important Super 8 clash. The winner of this game will qualify for the semifinals of the ongoing marquee event.

Batters Kyle Mayers and Shai Hope came out in the middle to open the innings for the hosts.

The Caribbeans didn’t get the start they wanted as the side lost their first wicket on the third ball of the match as left-arm seamer Marco Jansen dismissed Hope after scoring just one run.

The next batter to come out in the middle was the left-hand batter Nicholas Pooran but he was sent back by Markram on the first ball of the second over.

Following Pooran’s dismissal, right-hand batter Roston Chase came out in the middle to bat along with Mayers.

After the end of the powerplay (6 overs), West Indies were 47/2 with Chase (21) and Mayers (19) unbeaten on the crease.

The Rovman Powell-led side brought up their team’s fifty in 6.2 overs.

Both batters completed their 50-run partnership in the eighth over as Chase took a single on the bowling of the South African captain.
After the completion of 10 overs, the Caribbeans were 69/2 with Chase (33) and Mayers (29) unbeaten on the crease.

West Indies lost their third wicket, which was of Mayers, who scored 35 runs in 34 balls with three fours and two sixes in the 12th over when the team score was 86 and the fourth wicket (Rovman Powell) in the 13th over when the team score was 89.

Chase completed his half-century in 39 balls in the 14th over with the help of three fours and two sixes, as he took a single on the bowling Shamsi. In the same over the West Indies side lost their fifth wicket as Rutherford was sent back

Andre Russell came out to bat in the middle after the fall of the team’s first five wickets inside 100 runs.
After the end of 15 overs, West Indies were 97/5 with Chase (52) and Russell (1) unbeaten on the crease.
Chase was sent back to the dressing room in the 16th over on the bowling of Shamsi. He went back after playing a brilliant innings of 52 runs in 42 balls which was laced with three boundaries and two maximums in the innings.

After Chase’s wicket, Akeal Hosein came out to bat in the middle. On the last ball of the over Hossein slammed a boundary which brought up the the side 100.

In the 18th over, right-arm seamer Kagiso Rabada came to bowl his first over of the match. This over witnessed two wickets, one was through a runout of Russell (15 runs off 9 balls, 2 sixes) and the other one was of Hossein who was dismissed after scoring just six runs.

West Indies finished their innings at 135/8 in 20 overs.

The pick of the bowlers for the Aiden Markram-led side was Shamsi, who snapped three wickets in his spell of four overs where he conceded 27 runs. One wicket each was bagged by Marco Jansen, Markram,Keshav Maharaj, and Rabada in their respective spells.

Brief Score: West Indies: 135/8 in 20 overs (Roston Chase 52, Kyle Mayers 35, Tabraiz Shamsi 3/27) vs South Africa.

Probe Agency Records Statements Of NEET Candidates, School Owner In Gujarat

Godhara, Gujarat:

A CBI team investigating the NEET-UG malpractices case on Thursday recorded statements of three candidates who had allegedly paid an accused for helping them clear the medical entrance test held at a private school near Godhra in Gujarat.

Besides the three candidates and their parents, the investigators were also questioning Dixit Patel, owner of the local Jay Jalaram School, at the Godhra circuit house, an official said.

A Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) team has been camping in Gujarat for the last four days to probe alleged malpractice during the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test held on May 5.

The school run by Dixit Patel was one of the exam centres.

The team had on Wednesday visited two private schools in Gujarat’s Kheda and Panchmahal districts as part of its probe. CBI officials first visited Jay Jalaram International School on Sevaliya-Balasinor highway in Kheda district, and later the Jay Jalaram School at Godhra in Panchmahal district.

Both the schools, located 100 km apart, are owned by Patel.

A case was registered by Godhra Police on May 8 against three persons under various Indian Penal Code provisions including criminal conspiracy, cheating and criminal breach of trust for allegedly trying to help 27 candidates clear the NEET-UG by charging Rs 10 lakh each.

On June 23, the CBI filed a fresh FIR (first information report) against unidentified persons under IPC sections 120-B (criminal conspiracy) and 420 (cheating), among others, amid countrywide protests and litigation by students for a probe into paper leak claims.

The CBI has taken over the investigation of five new cases of alleged malpractices in NEET-UG being probed by police in Gujarat, Rajasthan and Bihar.

The Gujarat police had arrested five persons, including the principal and a teacher of a school in Godhra, in these cases.

The racket was unearthed after the Panchmahal district collector received a tip-off that some persons were involved in malpractices linked to the exam, as per the FIR registered on May 8 by the Godhra police.

Since the tip-off was received in advance, authorities prevented malpractices at the centre (Jay Jalaram School in Godhra) and the exam was conducted without a hitch, the FIR said.

Physics teacher Tushar Bhatt, school principal Parshottam Sharma, Vadodara-based education consultant Parsuram Roy, his aide Vibhor Anand and alleged middleman Arif Vohra were arrested by police.

As per the FIR registered at the Godhra taluka police station on a complaint of the district education officer, Rs 7 lakh in cash were recovered from Bhatt who taught at Jay Jalaram School and was appointed the deputy centre superintendent for NEET in the city.

Out of 27 students who had either paid in advance or agreed to pay money to Roy and others, only three were able to clear the exam, according to sources.

The accused had asked the candidates to solve a question if they knew the answer, and leave the remaining paper blank. The answers of remaining questions were be filled in by Bhatt when the papers were collected after the exam, as per the FIR.

More than 24 lakh students appeared for the NEET UG 2024 across centres in 571 cities. Results were released on June 4.

Quader’s passion for acting led him to Hyderabad to pursue a career in acting. His introduction to Swarna, and their shared interest in Karra Samu sparked a partnership aimed at preserving and promoting this ancient art form.

Their collaborative efforts have borne fruit, with Karra Samu camps now running across various neighborhoods in Hyderabad, including Yousufguda, Kukatpally, Madhapur, Manikonda, and Uppal. The academy has trained over 2,000 students, providing them with the skills and confidence to face life’s challenges.

Opinion: The Great Asian Reconciliation: Can India-China Find Common Ground?

Latest and Breaking News on NDTV

London is known for its open intellectual climate, where no idea is off-limits. But even in this dynamic city – and indeed in Washington too – it’s almost blasphemous to suggest that Russia and the West can be partners, or that the US and China can coexist as global powers. Recently, Nigel Farage, the Reform Party leader in the UK, faced a storm for urging the West to negotiate sensibly with Russia over Ukraine, calling the war a ‘complete stalemate’. People accused him of “echoing Russian propaganda”.

In India, we often hear that we don’t cultivate a society where all ideas are welcome. But let’s hope that suggesting a new chapter of “Hindi-Cheeni bhai-bhai” (India-China brotherhood) isn’t seen as blasphemy. The strong anti-China sentiment after the Galwan Valley clash in 2020 seems to have subsided. We’re buying more Chinese goods now than ever. In 2023, our bilateral trade hit over $136 billion. Hopefully, even those who burnt Chinese products in Gujarat and Delhi following the border skirmishes are more open to the idea now.

Sure, it might sound crazy to suggest that India and China should become trusted partners like the US and India, or Russia and China. But, it’s not entirely out of the question.

Major Geopolitical Shifts

India’s rise to become a global power is unstoppable; even China knows that. Talking to Chinese academics and journalists, you get the sense that they’re open to establishing long-term ties based on mutual respect. They like India, they want more people-to-people interactions, and one of them even wondered recently why India does not try to cast its spell over the dragon through its soft power of Bollywood

Both countries have the responsibility to lift millions of their combined 2.8 billion people out of poverty. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has pledged to make India a developed country by 2047, which is a huge task. There are challenges, but if India and China team up and leverage each other’s strengths, it could be a major geopolitical shift, with far-reaching implications for global politics.

Read | Modi-Hasina Should Worry About China, But Not Too Much

The US and its allies might be shocked and deeply concerned by a close India-China partnership. The West has benefited from the rivalry between the two countries as it aligns with their strategy of counterbalancing China’s rise. A partnership between these two Asian giants could undermine the West’s strategic interests in the region. Kishore Mahbubani, former Singaporean ambassador to the UN, has often said that most of Asia would cheer if this were to happen.

So, can India and China find common ground despite tensions over their disputed border? Prof. Mahbubani believes that while the two may never be best friends, they can have a good working relationship. He even says the 21st century belongs to the CIA (China, India, and ASEAN) countries. With US power on the decline, these countries will drive the world’s economic growth.

A Rollercoaster Ride

The idea of India and China being close friends isn’t new. Historically, they’ve acted like quarrelsome neighbours who fight and make up repeatedly. They share a long history of cultural and economic exchange dating back over two millennia. The Silk Road facilitated trade, and Buddhism, which started in India, found a significant following in China. These ancient ties laid a foundation of mutual respect and cultural affinity. During the colonial era, both countries faced subjugation by Western powers, fostering a sense of shared struggle.

After gaining independence from the British, India faced border issues with China, and they continue to strain their relationship. In the early 1950s, the relationship was marked by camaraderie, epitomised by the slogan “Hindi-Chini Bhai-Bhai“. However, this period of cooperation was short-lived. The border dispute escalated into a full-scale war in 1962, leaving a lasting scar on bilateral relations. The disputed borders, particularly in the Aksai Chin and Arunachal Pradesh regions, remain contentious issues.

Before the Galwan incident, Prime Minister Narendra Modi naturally leaned towards engaging with China. As Gujarat’s Chief Minister, he made four trips to the country to attract investment. As Prime Minister, he has visited China twice, and President Xi Jinping reciprocated with two visits to India. Both countries have emerged as major global economic powers, engaging in significant economic competition and areas of cooperation within multilateral frameworks like BRICS and the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO).

Strategic Rivalry

Strategically, India and China view each other with suspicion. The latter’s close ties with Pakistan, its infrastructure projects in South Asia under the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), and its military presence in the Indian Ocean have heightened India’s security concerns.

Conversely, India’s growing partnership with the US and its participation in the Quad (Quadrilateral Security Dialogue) is viewed warily by China. The 2020 Galwan Valley clash exacerbated tensions and highlighted the fragility of the relationship. Despite several rounds of military and diplomatic talks, a comprehensive resolution to the border disputes remains elusive.

Mumbai’s Shanghai Dreams

Many youth in India might not know that not too long ago, India used to compare itself with Pakistan in all spheres. This attitude changed around the turn of the millennium, when the Maharashtra government launched a mega project to revamp Mumbai in 2004, based on the “Vision Mumbai” report by Bombay First, an organisation comprising some of Mumbai’s super-rich stakeholders. The report outlined strategies for transforming Mumbai into “another Shanghai”. While the project to transform Mumbai is still a “work in progress”, it marked the beginning of India’s comparisons with China. Today, China sees India as its great rival, at least in Asia.

Projections show that the Indian economy will surpass Germany and Japan’s to become the world’s third-largest one by 2027. Currently, however, India’s economy is only 19% the size of China’s, even though it feeds nearly the same number of people. According to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), India’s nominal GDP in 2023 stood at $3.5 trillion, compared to China’s $18.2 trillion. India’s per capita income was $2,411, while China’s was $12,720. China’s exports last year exceeded $3.38 trillion, while India’s exports were $778 billion.

Collaboration Possibilities

Since China opened its economy in 1978, it has lifted 800 million people out of poverty – a feat that hasn’t been matched by any regime in history. India has also succeeded in reducing poverty significantly. Both nations have many more millions to help. Collaborating in economic development, technology, infrastructure, environmental initiatives, healthcare, cultural exchange, and geopolitical stability can benefit both countries and the world. Overcoming historical tensions and building trust through consistent dialogue will be crucial.

The intense rivalry between the US and China will continue, and India will remain under pressure from the US to stay a reliable partner in its effort to manage China. However, India’s strategic positioning between the US and China can work to its advantage. Ultimately, New Delhi’s strategic interests are best served by a balanced approach that navigates the complex dynamics of US-China relations while advancing its own national objectives.

India knows that neighbours with shared borders may fight at times, but they can still continue to believe in the ‘love thy neighbour’ dictum.

Khammam: Posting videos of hunted wild animals on social media platform Instagram has landed a youth in Khammam in jail.

Forest officials arrested and remanded a youth who was hunting wild animals in Kusumanchi mandal in the district on Wednesday. The accused, Tammishetty Vamshi of Polepalli village in the mandal, was accused of killing wild animals such as monitor lizard, rabbits and wild cats. He used to post the videos of the animals on the social media apparently to attract prospective buyers.

Vamshi was arrested following a complaint by an animal activist working with the Stray Animal Foundation of India NGO, Adulapuram Goutham of Karimnagar. He lodged a complaint with the Khammam DFO about the activities of the accused and requested to take action against him after he found the hunter’s videos on social media.

Kusumanchi FRO Srinivas Rao told Telangana Today that the accused was booked under relevant sections of the Wildlife Protection Act and was produced before the district court for judicial remand.
