Mahabubabad: Farmer threatens suicide at Tahsildar office

The 55-year-old farmer said there were some wrong entries in the records and he was roaming around the Tahsildar office for a correction in the records.

Mahabubabad: Tension prevailed for a while at the Narasimulupeta mandal Tahsildar office here on Thursday after a 55-year-old farmer climbed a tree holding a bottle of poison and threatened to die by suicide.

Bhukya Balu, son of Laxma, owned two acres of land, which he got from his ancestors. He was cultivating the land since then. However, he said there were some wrong entries in the records and he was roaming around the Tahsildar office for a correction in the records. From the two acres, a portion of land was recorded on the name of his cousin, whose name was also Bhukya Balu, son of Amaru. Following this, the second Bhukya Balu sold about 28 guntas of land to one Devilal recently to perform his daughter’s marriage. A deal was made and payment of a partial amount was pending by Devilal, who insisted that payment would be made after the patta was generated on his name. Balu then applied for a transfer and a surveyor arrived at the land for conducting the survey.

Upon learning that his cousin had sold a portion of his land, the original owner Bhukya Balu reached the Tahsildar office and climbed up a tree holding the poison bottle. He threatened to die by suicide if the correction was not made and his land was returned to him. Tension prevailed for nearly 30 minutes at the office. After Tahsildar Nagaraju assured that a thorough survey would be conducted in the presence of the police and promised to deliver justice, Balu got down from the tree, according to reports.

"Could've Chosen Better Words": Sam Pitroda After Congress Reappointment

Sam Pitroda’s comments had triggered a huge uproar in the run-up to the general election.

New Delhi:

Sam Pitroda — Congress’s overseas unit chief who is back in the saddle after a seven-week break — today stood by his statement about diversity among Indians that were seen as racist, but admitted that he could have put it better. “It is not about words but about the meaning… but maybe I could have done a better job,” he told NDTV in an exclusive interview.  And about the row that followed that comment, he shrugged it off.

“I have to run my life. They can twist the fact that I live in Chicago and why I am talking about India… I would expect civilised conversation, dialogue… but that is lost… People are not interested in the substance of a conversation, they are interested in the form of the conversation,” he said.

Mr Pitroda had stepped down from the post in May after his two consecutive statements sparked huge controversies. He was reinstated yesterday.

In an exclusive interview with The Statesman in early May, Mr Pitroda had described India as a “diverse country… where people in the East look like the Chinese, people on West look like Arabs, people in the North look like maybe White and people in South look like Africans”.

It had triggered a huge uproar in the run-up to the election, coming on the heels of his comments about inheritance tax.

Barely two weeks before, Mr Pitroda had cited inheritance tax as an example of “new policies that can “help prevent concentration of wealth” which should be discussed and debated. The Congress, he had added, always helps people at the bottom of the economic pyramid.

His remarks were interpreted as advocacy of inheritance tax in India and Prime Minister Narendra Modi had remarked that if elected, the Congress would redistribute the personal wealth of people among “infiltrators” and won’t even spare the mangalsutras of women.

Mr Pitroda today said no one had questioned him about what he meant before jumping to conclusions. “When I made the comment on inheritance tax, I did not mean that I’m proposing inheritance tax. How do you come to that conclusion?”

His comments about diversity were also twisted, he said.

“Next time I said something about – my way of saying how diverse we are, people thought it was racial. There is nothing racial in saying that we came from Africa. It is a fact of life. And who says that being black is racist? No. I am dark. My wife is not very dark. So what?” he said.

“We tend to make issues out of nothing. And that’s the reason I decided that is better to take myself out,” he added. That was the way to bring back the focus on issues that matter, he said.

The row that followed Mr Pitroda’s comments had threatened to derail the Congress focus on bread-and-butter issues like unemployment and inflation and the big picture issues of constitution and democracy.

After he stepped down, the BJP had called it a gimmick. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had remarked  that it was part of the Congress strategy to spread “confusion” and that Mr Pitroda would be back.

The 82-year-old said his return was more a matter of “what needs to be done”, pointing to the elections due this year in many countries, including the US, France, Germany. The Indian election had sent a message across the world, he said. Similar voices are rising across the world.

“Look at what happened in South Africa. The South African people also spoke loud and clear — that we would rather have a coalition with compromises than an authoritarian government.  The message that Indian people have conveyed, that democracy is important, that message has to go across the world. That is a major task,” he said.

In the recently concluded Lok Sabha Election, the Congress had won 99 seats on its own — up from its 2019 tally of 52. The INDIA alliance scooped up 232 seats.

The BJP fell short of a majority, winning in 240 constituencies, but the NDA was comfortably over the 272 mark, ending up with a figure of 293.

Vijayalakshmi shared a fan art on her Instagram account along with a message in which she called her husband’s fans “celebrities” and said that the actor was “touched” by the support he was getting.

“Call for all our celebrities. You all know how much Darshan loves you. It is sad that we are in this situation today and that we have to stay at a distance from him. I have spoken to him in detail about the situation outside and it has touched his heart,” Vijayalakshmi said.

Darshan has urged all his celebrities to stay calm and focus on doing good deeds. He is sure that he will be a part of your prayers, she said.

“We have immense faith in the judicial system of our nation and am sure there will be brighter days ahead. I firmly believe that those attempting to harm Darshan through words/action during his absence will be taken care of by Mother Chamundeshwari,” she said.

Vijayalakshmi urged the actor’s fans to keep supporting him in these hard times, saying, “Your being calm will be our biggest strength. This too shall pass. Truth will Triumph.” A total of 17 people, including Darshan and his friend Pavithra Gowda, are accused in the alleged killing of Renukaswamy.

According to police sources, 33-year-old Renukaswamy, a fan of the actor, had sent obscene messages to Gowda, which enraged Darshan, allegedly leading to his murder. His body was found near a stormwater drain next to an apartment in Sumanahalli here on June 9. Darshan and the other accused are currently in judicial custody.

Revanth admits ‘lack of coordination’; Jeevan Reddy calms down

Revanth Reddy

Hyderabad: Chief Minister and TPCC president A Revanth Reddy, following an uproar within the party over the induction of Jagtial MLA Dr Sanjay Kumar into the party, on Thursday admitted that there was a lack of coordination and that the PCC did not take the necessary steps, which had led to the situation where MLC T Jeevan Reddy had threatened to resign from his post.

The Chief Minister admitted to this folly on part of the PCC, which he heads, while replying to queries on the issues that cropped up within the party after the induction of BRS MLAs Sanjay Kumar and Pocharam Srinivas Reddy, with him personally said to have engineered both the defections.

“There was lack of coordination from our end and the PCC did not take the necessary measures, leading to a chaotic situation,” he admitted, at the same time, stating that the party would utilise the experience and services of Jeevan Reddy.

Meanwhile, Congress MLC T Jeevan Reddy appeared to have mellowed down after meeting the party high command and Revanth Reddy in New Delhi on Thursday. Objecting the entry of the BRS MLA into the party, the Congress MLC had said that he was humiliated that the decision in his constituency was taken without consulting or informing him. Though IT Minister D Sridhar Babu and Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka appealed to the MLC to reconsider his decision, he had stood firm.

After being summoned by the high command to Delhi on Wednesday, Jeevan Reddy met AICC Telangana incharge Deepadas Munshi and Revanth Reddy, after which he calmed down. Though there were rumours that he might be inducted into the State cabinet, the Chief Minister indirectly denied this, and at the same time, also brushed aside speculations about a Cabinet expansion.

“Due to false reports in a section of media, people are in confusion. I am the Education Minister and not a part time Minister. There is no portfolio vacant and there are Ministers for all portfolios,” Revanth Reddy said, also stating that all exams were conducted smoothly and efficiently by the Education department.

US again raises ‘concerns’ over alleged discrimination of minorities in India

The findings come a few weeks after Prime Minister Narendra Modi began his third term in office

US again raises ‘concerns’ over alleged discrimination of minorities in India

Washington: The United States Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF), an organisation India has strongly criticised in the past, has again raised ‘concerns’ over religious freedoms, citing the alleged rise in ‘hate speech‘, demolitions and anti-conversion laws.

The report annually surveys religious freedoms around the world and aims to provide a “fact-based, comprehensive view of the state of religious freedom” in nearly 200 countries and territories.

The findings come a few weeks after Prime Minister Narendra Modi began his third term in office and India and the United States agreed to strengthen cooperation in high technology areas during a visit by White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan to New Delhi.

“In India, we see a concerning increase in anti-conversion laws, hate speech, demolitions of homes and places of worship for members of minority faith communities,” US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said at an event in Washington on Monday.

The US ambassador-at-large for international religious freedom, Rashad Hussain also expressed concerns about the situation in India. “In India, Christian communities reported that local police aided mobs that disrupted worship services over accusations of conversion activities, or stood by while mobs attacked them and then arrested the victims on conversion charges,” he said.

Earlier in May, India rejected a similar report of the US Commission on International Religious Freedom that accused the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of “reinforcing discriminatory nationalist policies” and termed the organisation “biased” with “political agenda.”

“The US Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) is known as a biased organization with a political agenda. They continue to publish their propaganda on India masquerading as part of an annual report,” MEA official spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said at a press briefing.

“We really have no expectation that USCIRF will even seek to understand India’s diverse, pluralistic and democratic ethos. Their efforts to interfere in the largest electoral exercise of the world will never succeed,” he added.

The USCIRF had then alleged that the Indian government “failed to address” communal violence disproportionately affecting Muslims, Christians, Sikhs, Dalits, Jews, and Adivasis (indigenous peoples) in 2023.

Among its key findings, the report calls out several countries including India, China, Russia, and Iran for violations of explicitly targeting members from certain faith communities. A detailed section of the report also mentioned the alleged “targeted attacks against religious minorities in India.”

The report expresses several concerns over India’s religious freedom. It claims religious conversion is “legally prohibited” in multiple States, religious minorities are “attacked on a regular basis”, and alleges that Muslims face systemic discrimination.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken also noted that in the United States, hate crimes against both Muslims and Jews “have gone up dramatically.” The US also raised concerns about Pakistan, where Blinken condemned blasphemy laws that “help foster a climate of intolerance and hatred that can lead to vigilantism and mob violence.”

Secretary Blinken also mentioned the imprisonment and exile of Muslim Uyghurs in China, as well as the repression of Tibetan Buddhists, Christians and Falun Gong practitioners.
