La Paz: Armoured vehicles rammed the doors of Bolivia‘s government palace on Wednesday in an apparent coup attempt against President Luis Arce, but he vowed to stand firm and named a new army commander who ordered troops to stand down.

The soldiers later pulled back as supporters of Arce waved Bolivian flags and cheered in a central square.

In a video of Arce surrounded by Ministers in the palace, the Bolivian leader said: “Here we are, firm in Casa Grande, to confront any coup attempt. We need the Bolivian people to organise.”

Arce confronted the general commander of the army — Juan José Zúñiga, who appeared to be leading the rebellion — in the palace hallway, as shown on video on Bolivian television. “I am your captain, and I order you to withdraw your soldiers, and I will not allow this insubordination,” Arce said.

Before entering the government building, Zúñiga told journalists in the plaza: “Surely soon there will be a new Cabinet of Ministers; our country, our State cannot go on like this.” But, he said, “for now” he recognises Arce as commander-in-chief.

Zúñiga did not explicitly say he’s leading a coup, but in the palace, with bangs echoing behind him, he said the army was trying to “restore democracy and free our political prisoners.”

In a message on his X account, Arce called for “democracy to be respected.” It came as Bolivian television showed two tanks and a number of men in military uniform in front of the government palace.

“We cannot allow, once again, coup attempts to take the lives of Bolivians,” he said from inside the palace, surrounded by government officials, in a video message sent to news outlets.

An hour later, Arce announced new heads of the army, navy and air force amid the roar of supporters. Video showed troops setting up blockades outside the government palace.

“I order all that are mobilised to return to their units, said the newly named army chief José Wilson Sánchez. “No one wants the images we’re seeing in the streets.” Soon after troops and armoured vehicles start pulling back from Bolivia’s presidential palace.

The leadership of Bolivia’s largest labour union condemned the action and declared an indefinite strike of social and labour organisations in La Paz in defence of the government.

The incident was met with a wave of outrage by other regional leaders, including the Organization of American States; Gabriel Boric, the president of neighbouring Chile; the leader of Honduras, and former Bolivian leaders.

Bolivia, a country of 12 million people, has seen intensifying protests in recent months over the economy’s precipitous decline from one of the continent’s fastest-growing two decades ago to one of its most crisis-stricken.

The country also has seen a high-profile rift at the highest levels of the governing party. Arce and his one-time ally, leftist icon and former President Evo Morales, have been battling for the future of Bolivia’s splintering Movement for Socialism, known by its Spanish acronym MAS, ahead of elections in 2025.

Opposition To Raise NEET In Parliament Tomorrow, Government Says "Ready"

New Delhi:

Student protests escalating across the country over alleged irregularities in medical entrance exam NEET (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test) and other competitive exams, the Opposition has said it would raise the issue in parliament tomorrow. The idea is to corner the government, even though the day is dedicated to a discussion on the Motion of Thanks to President’s address to parliament. Projecting confidence, sources told NDTV that the government is ready to answer any questions on the matter even if it comes up during the debate.

Every possible action has been taken on the NEET issue, from starting a Central Bureau of Investigation probe to forming a special committee to look into it, government sources said. The committee report is expected soon. Also, the stringent rules against cheating and paper leak coming into effect in this session, strong action will be taken against the culprits and foundation would be laid for a robust education system, they said.

In case the matter comes up tomorrow, education minister Dharmendra Pradhan will respond to it, sources said. Mr Pradhan was booed by the Opposition over the NEET row when he took oath in parliament on Monday.

The massive row over NEET also came up in President Droupadi Murmu’s address to the joint session of parliament today. The government, President Murmu said, is “committed to a fair investigation”.

“The opposition will be in attacking mode,’ senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said after today’s meeting. “The mandate of the Lok Sabha polls is a personal, political and moral defeat of the Prime Minister. The opposition will remind him of this every day,” he said.

The Opposition decision to raise NEET before any other issue was taken at a meeting this evening amid massive public anger. Since June 4, when the results were declared, protests and demonstrations have swept the country over allegations of paper leak and preferential marking.

This afternoon, the Congress student wing NSUI barged into the office of the NTA (National Testing agency) which conducts the NEET exam, demanding that it be shut down. The protest came shortly after the Youth Congress held a protest near Parliament.

The NEET results coinciding with the results of the general election, the protests and allegations gave the rejuvenated opposition its first opportunity to target the BJP-led government at the beginning of its third term.

Congress’s Rahul Gandhi contended that the BJP-ruled states have become the “epicentre of paper leak”, pointing to the Vyapam scam in Madhya Pradesh 15 years ago, that involved massive irregularities in the entrance exams for government jobs. From there, it has spread to all BJP-ruled states, he said in a reference to the paper leak in the Uttar Pradesh Police Constable exam.

The government retaliated with allegations of a nexus between key INDIA ally Rashtriya Janata Dal’s Tejashwi Yadav and the accused arrested in Bihar in the paper leak case. The RJD has denied the claim.

Private medical colleges in Telangana to collect fee at beginning of academic year

Hyderabad: The Telangana Admission and Fee Regulatory Committee (TAFRC) on Wednesday directed the private medical colleges to collect the fee at the beginning of each academic year and in five equal installments. The committee instructed colleges not to collect the fee from students in advance.

For instance, if a college has a fee of Rs.14.50 lakh per annum, the total fee comes to Rs.65.25 lakh for the entire 4 1⁄2 years course period.

This total fee divided into five equal installments should be collected at the beginning of each academic year.

“The fee fixed by this committee for the entire MBBS course, which is spread over 4 1⁄2 years and divided into 9 semesters. To reduce the burden on students, the total fee is divided into five equal installments for a 4 1⁄2 years course. The committee recommends that the fee should be collected at the beginning of each academic year in five equal installments and managements should not collect the fee in advance,” the TAFRC said.

The committee also asked the colleges not to collect fees from candidates who were detained or failed during their course and later continued since they have already paid the fee for that academic year.

New Delhi: Amid the row over the appointment of the pro-tem speaker, Union Minister HD Kumaraswamy on Monday slammed the INDIA bloc for holding a protest by carrying copies of the Constitution to the Parliament in the national capital. “These are all just gimmicks…” said HD Kumaraswamy.

Speaking on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s remark on the Emergency, the Union Minister called him “right”, adding to that he said, “He remembered what happened at that time.” Meanwhile, Congress MP Manickam Tagore launched a scathing attack against the PM Modi-led centre and said, “Everyday democracy is facing threat in India. For the past 10 years, every activity of Mr Modi has been against democratic forces. Even the statues of Gandhi ji and Babasaheb Ambedkar in Parliament have been removed and kept somewhere else…This is the way they want to run this country and they are lecturing us about democracy. This is very ridiculous for the Prime Minister, Mr Modi. ” Tagore further stated that PM Modi has lost the confidence of the people. “His party is reduced from 303 to 240. So, he will repeat these kinds of things again and again,” he added further.

Speaking on the protest carried out by the INDIA bloc leaders he said that it was an attempt to remind the government that Constitution is everything for this country. “We wanted to show that we stand for the Constitution and we wanted to remind the Government that the Constitution is everything for this country and any step to disturb or change the Constitution won’t be tolerated,” he added.

Earlier in the day, PM Modi lashed out at the opposition over the emergency while addressing media persons outside the new Parliament building before taking oath as a Member of Parliament.

Recalling the 21-month period of emergency that was implemented in the country on June 25, 1975, PM Modi said the new generation of India will never forget that time when the country was turned into a prison, adding that they will take a resolution of a vibrant democracy so that no one will dare to do such a thing in India again.

“Tomorrow is 25th June. 25th June marks 50 years since the blot that was put on the democracy of India. The new generation of India will never forget that the Constitution of India was completely rejected, every part of the Constitution was torn to pieces, the country was turned into a prison, and democracy was completely suppressed,” he said.

“While protecting our Constitution, while protecting the democracy of India and the democratic traditions, the countrymen will take a resolution that no one will dare to do such a thing in India again, which was done 50 years ago. We will take a resolution of a vibrant democracy. We will take a resolution to fulfil the dreams of the common people as per the directions of the Constitution of India,” PM Modi said.

The Prime Minister concluded his address by stating that the country hopes and expects the opposition to maintain the dignity of democracy, adding that the people want substance, not slogans.

Iran’s Judiciary chief urges end to double standard in fighting rights violators

Iran’s Judiciary chief has called for an end to the discriminatory approaches of international bodies influenced by Western powers towards human rights violations, saying such double standards have weakened the rule of law worldwide.

Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei made the remarks in a meeting with foreign ambassadors and heads of offices of international organizations in Tehran on Wednesday.

He said Iran believes the international community must fight against human rights violators without discrimination and not be swayed by Western powers, who have often exploited human rights as a means to further their own agenda.

“We believe that international institutions and organizations have often acted discriminately and have ignored blatant human rights violations, aligning themselves with the goals of global powers; the same powers that have repeatedly instrumentalized human rights to push their desires and political agenda.”

The Iranian official highlighted the crimes of the Zionist regime in Gaza, expressing dismay that international organizations and human rights bodies have not taken effective measures to halt the atrocities.

“In the Gaza situation, the world has been a witness to the regime’s brutal crimes and acts of genocide against the defenseless people for several months now.”

“It is evident how children and infants are being dismembered by missiles and heavy bombs, and, regrettably, human rights organizations and institutions have yet to act decisively to prevent these heinous crimes.”

Mohseni Ejei also addressed the Western double standard in combating terrorism, exemplified by their long-standing support for the terrorist Mujahedin-e Khalq Organization (MKO).

“After the triumph of the Islamic Revolution in Iran, the MKO was responsible for the bloodshed of thousands of our citizens in the streets and markets.”

The Iranian official was referring to a 1981 bombing by the MKO that resulted in the death of over 70 Iranian officials.

“The criminal leaders of the same terrorist group, with this disgraceful record, are under the protection of which countries? Why are these countries not willing to hand over these criminals to us or at least set restrictions against their activities?”

The MKO has perpetrated numerous terrorist attacks against Iranian civilians and government officials since 1979. Of the nearly 17,000 Iranians who have been victims of terrorist attacks over the past four decades, approximately 12,000 have been killed by the MKO’s acts of terror.

The group aligned with Saddam Hussein during Iraq’s imposed war on Iran in the 1980s but lost favor with Baghdad following his overthrow by a US-led invasion in 2003.

The European Union, Canada, the United States, and Japan had previously listed the MKO as a terrorist organization.

In 2012, the group was taken off the US blacklist. The EU followed suit, removing the group from its list of terrorist organizations.

Number of Palestinians who died in Israeli jails since October highest in decades: Report

Israeli soldiers stand by a truck packed with bound and blindfolded Palestinians in Gaza, December 8, 2023.

The number of Palestinians who have died in Israeli jails since October 7 is the highest since 1967, a report says.

The Commission for Detainees Affairs and the Palestinian Prisoners Society said in a report on Wednesday that Israeli authorities have been torturing Palestinians at a level without precedent since that October day.

Israel has been holding more than 9,400 Palestinians from the occupied West Bank, along with thousands from the besieged Gaza Strip and hundreds from the 1948-occupied land since October, the two groups said.

Palestinians recently released by Israel have recounted suffering due to the inhuman treatment and abuse at the hands of Israeli jailers. They spoke of starvation, systematic medical negligence, isolation and denial of basic rights.

“Detainees are subjected to torture and various forms of abuse, including sexual assault and rape,” the report said.

Israeli authorities said earlier in June that they had begun transferring Palestinians from Sde Teiman, a former military base in the Negev desert, after groups demanded the closure of the site.

At least 18 Palestinians along with an unknown number from Gaza have died in Israeli custody since October.

A UN report, prepared by an independent commission of inquiry set up by the UN human rights commission, has accused Israel of committing war crimes and crimes against humanity as well as carrying out a war of extermination against the Palestinian people in Gaza.

The finding suggests Israel deliberately and systematically targeted Palestinian civilians in breach of both international humanitarian and human rights laws.

Trial run of SRLIP’s BG Kothur pump house in Aswapuram mandal in Kothagudem district conducted on Thursday.

Kothagudem: The State government aims to supply Godavari water from the SRLIP to 1.5 lakh acres in Khammam district in this Vanakalam season, informed Agriculture Minister Tummala Nageswara Rao.

The Minister asked the officials to complete the works of the all three pump houses at BG Kothur, Pusugudem and Kamalapuram under Sitarama Lift Irrigation Project in a month’s time on war footing and conduct trial run. Godavari water has to be supplied from the SRLIP main canal to Wyra reservoir through Enkoor link canal in August month, he said.

The trial run of Sitarama Lift Irrigation Project (SRLIP) phase-one pump house at BG Kothur village of Aswapuram mandal in the district was conducted successfully. Godavari water reaches the pump house from Dummugudem anicut through a gravity canal.

The irrigation officials conducted an internal trial run during late night hours on Wednesday and Nageswara Rao switched on the motors on Thursday. Speaking to the media, the minister described the trial run as a key phase in irrigating lands in Khammam district.

The project was aimed at irrigating 10 lakh acres in Khammam, Kothagudem and Mahabubabad districts besides stabilising existing 2.48 lakh acres ayacut under Nagarjuna Sagar left canal, Wyra and Palair reservoirs, he said.

He thanked the officials who were working hard to complete the project works and farmers for giving their lands for the project construction. Bhadrachalam MLA Dr. T Venkat Rao and others were present.

Russia urges its citizens not to travel to Lebanon

Speaking in an interview with Rossiya 24 TV channel, Russian Ambassador to Lebanon Alexander Rudakov urged Russians to wait untill the situation in the country calms down.

Cross-border tension between the Israeli regime and Lebanon’s Hezbollah, continuing since the Gaza war in October, has escalated in recent weeks, stoking fears of an all-out war. The exchange of fire has led to the evacuation of thousands of people from areas in northern occupied Palestinian lands.

The diplomat said an all-out conflict between Israel and Lebanon is “possible,” adding that the embassy has an action plan in such a scenario.

Rudakov emphasized that right now “there are no reasons for serious panic,” adding that the diplomatic mission continues to operate normally and takes the necessary security measures for its employees.
