India Opened Up Its Market That Benefited American Farmers: US

Biden administration official said India agreed to reduce tariffs on several US products

Washington:

After resolving half a dozen WTO disputes last year, India opened up its market for several US products which have benefited American farmers, a top Biden administration official told lawmakers on Tuesday.

The steps taken by India have given more market access for turkey, duck, blueberries, and cranberries benefiting farmers from several American states, US Trade Representative Katherine Tai told members of the House Committee on Ways and Means on President Biden’s 2024 Trade Policy Agenda.

“Last June, India and the United States terminated six WTO disputes, and India agreed to remove retaliatory tariffs on several US products,” Tai said.

“This means improved access for chickpeas, lentils, almonds, walnuts, and apples benefiting farmers across the country, including in Michigan, Oregon, and Washington,” she said.

“Additionally, in September, India and the United States resolved our final outstanding WTO dispute, and India agreed to reduce tariffs on several US products. This means more market access for turkey, duck, blueberries, and cranberries benefiting farmers in North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Wisconsin,” Tai told lawmakers.

BRS criticises delay in paddy procurement

Hyderabad: BRS leader and former Minister Ponnala Lakshmaiah raised concerns over the delay in paddy purchases, questioning the State government’s inefficiency in ensuring smooth procurement witin stipulated time.

He expressed anger, asking how much longer farmers would have to wait to sell their crops at the procurement centres.

“It has been 20 days since the government established paddy procurement centers and only 2.7 lakh tonnes of paddy has been bought. If it progresses at this pace, how many more days will it take to buy 34 lakh tonnes?” Lakshmaiah questioned, while addressing the media at Telangana Bhavan on Tuesday.

Pointing out the inconvenience faced by farmers who are forced to wait near the centres, the BRS leader criticised Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy for mismanagement of power.

He accused the ruling party of undermining the opposition and diverting attention from pressing issues by focusing on irrelevant matters like phone tapping case and giving leaks to select media houses to malign the reputation of former Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao and the previous BRS government.

Meta Seeks Opinion On Action Against AI Images Of Indian, US Celebrities

The Oversight Board did not mention the name or details of the celebrities.

New Delhi:

Social media giant Meta’s Oversight Board has invited public comments to decide on actions to be taken on AI-generated obscene images in two cases related to public figures in India and the US.

One of the two cases involves an AI-generated image of a nude woman posted on Instagram, the board, which decides on content moderation, said.

“The image has been created using artificial intelligence (AI) to resemble a public figure from India. The account that posted this content only shares AI-generated images of Indian women. The majority of users who reacted have accounts in India, where deepfakes are increasingly a problem,” it said.

Meta has sought public opinion on the issue, even though the Ministry of Electronics and IT has already asked social media firms to remove AI-generated fake images and videos and issued an advisory, asking these platforms to strictly adhere to them.

Fake or morphed images and videos of several Indian actresses, including Rashmika Mandanna and Priyanka Chopra Jonas, have gone viral on social media platforms, including Instagram, Facebook, and X.

The board said in the case related to India, a user reported the content to Meta for pornography but the report was automatically closed because it was not reviewed within 48 hours.

“The user then appealed to the Board. As a result of the Board selecting this case, Meta determined that its decision to leave the content up was in error and removed the post for violating the bullying and harassment community standard,” the board said.

As per IT rules of 2021, an online platform is required to remove full or partial nudity within 24 hours of receiving a complaint.

The board has also invited public views on a case in the US where an AI-generated obscene image of an American celebrity was posted in a Facebook group.

The majority of users who reacted to the post have accounts in the US, the board said.

In this case, the image was already considered a violation of Facebook’s Community Standards and was removed.

The public comment window for this case is open for 14 days till April 30, the board said.

The Oversight Board did not mention the name or details of the celebrities.

The post, however, shared a link of a news article which mentioned the names of Indian and US celebrities affected by such content

Gulf and Overseas Workers Welfare Board soon: CM Revanth Reddy

CM Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy addresses the Gulf workers union representatives on Tuesday.

Hyderabad: Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy said the State government was proposing to set up a Gulf and Overseas Workers Welfare Board for the convenience of workers going abroad to eke out a livelihood.

“Due to the election code, the initiative got delayed. I promise that by September 17, the Welfare Board will be set up at Praja Bhavan and will be operated by a senior IAS officer,” Revanth Reddy told Gulf workers union representatives here on Tuesday.

Discussing issues being faced by Gulf and overseas workers, he said the State government would extend insurance coverage of Rs.5 lakh to Gulf workers on the lines of Rythu Bima for farmers. As for the welfare board, it would be equipped with a round the clock toll free number for workers to call in case of any issues.

A passport assistance centre would also be set up as part of the board’s operations. This apart, a one week training programme would be conducted for workers before they board flights for the Gulf to help them understand the rules and about the companies’ operations, the Chief Minister said.

Since the issue was connected with 15 lakh workers’ families, agents would be brought under legal liability. They would also be made to register their details and operations with the government to initiate any action in case of untoward incidents, he said.

When the representatives suggested a few measures, especially over welfare measures, he replied that already the State government had studied the Kerala and Philippines governments’ policy. Accordingly, a policy document was prepared and after the Lok Sabha elections, a meeting would be conducted by the State government to discuss the policy and seek recommendations from the unions for incorporating into the policy, he added.

Netanyahu not Iran should be blamed for regional tensions

Speaking to reporters following a cabinet meeting in the capital Ankara, Erdoğan said Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his administration are responsible for Iran’s aerial attacks on April 13, but Western powers refuse to acknowledge this fact, Daily Sabah reported.

“The main actor responsible for the tension that gripped our hearts on the evening of April 13 is Netanyahu and his bloody administration,” he said.

Noting that the weekend attacks have shown the double standards of the West and the potential of war in the region, the Turkish president said it is crucial to identify the main reason behind the April 13 attack.

“Since Oct. 7, the Israeli government has been taking provocative steps to fuel the fire in the region,” Erdoğan said, adding that Israel’s attack on Iran’s consular building in Damascus, in violation of the Vienna Convention, was the last straw.

He continued by saying that not that many countries reacted against Israel’s attack, which completely disregarded international law.

“Those who have not voiced any opposition to Israeli aggression for months, are now racing to condemn Iran’s response,” Erdoğan said, adding that they should actually condemn and criticize Netanyahu, who is responsible for killing 34,000 civilians, including women, children and babies, journalists.

“Fueling the fire, continuously spoiling Netanyahu administration benefits no one,” he said, adding that such an unjust stance will lead to new tensions until the oppression and genocide in Gaza ends.

Erdoğan also said Turkey did not allow the sale of any materials that could be used for military purposes by Israel, long before the massacres in Gaza.
