Mumbai:

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on Monday said nearly 97.69 percent of the Rs 2000 denomination bank notes have returned to the banking system, and only Rs 8,202 crore worth of the withdrawn notes are still with the public.

On May 19, 2023, the RBI announced the withdrawal of Rs 2,000 denomination bank notes from circulation.

The total value of Rs 2000 banknotes in circulation, which was Rs 3.56 lakh crore at the close of business on May 19, 2023, when the withdrawal of Rs 2000 banknotes was announced, has declined to Rs 8,202 crore at the close of business on March 29, 2024, the Reserve Bank of India said in a statement.

“Thus, 97.69 percent of the Rs 2000 banknotes in circulation as of May 19, 2023, has since been returned,” it added.

The Rs 2,000 banknotes continue to be legal tender.

People can deposit and/or exchange Rs 2000 banknotes at 19 RBI offices across the country. People can also send Rs 2000 bank notes through India Post from any post office to any of the RBI Issue Offices for credit to their bank accounts in India.

Public and private entities holding such notes were initially asked to either exchange or deposit them in bank accounts by September 30, 2023. The deadline was later extended to October 7, 2023. Deposit and exchange services at bank branches were discontinued on October 7, 2023.

Starting October 8, 2023, individuals have been provided with the choice of either exchanging the currency or having the equivalent sum credited to their bank accounts at the 19 offices of the RBI.

The 19 RBI offices depositing/exchanging the bank notes are in Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Belapur, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Jammu, Kanpur, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, New Delhi, Patna and Thiruvananthapuram.

The Rs 2000 banknotes were introduced in November 2016, following the demonetisation of the then-prevailing Rs 1,000 and Rs 500 banknotes.

Swarnagiri temple, an architectural marvel

Hyderabad: Yadadri Tirumala Devasthanam, also known as Swarnagiri Sree Venkateswara Swamy Devasthanam, situated atop Manepally Hills in Bhuvanagiri, has emerged as a captivating new destination just 47.3 kilometres from Hyderabad and a mere 19.7 kilometres from Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy Temple in Yadadri.

Recently opened for devotees, albeit partially under construction, this temple is quickly becoming a focal point of spiritual significance and architectural magnificence. Nestled on a sprawling 22-acre land owned by the Manepally family, the new temple is hailed as one of the largest Balaji temples in South India.

Its location on the picturesque Swarnagiri hill lends it an ethereal charm, especially when the temple is illuminated. Ascending the 108 steps to the temple, visitors are greeted by a blend of Pallava, Vijayanagara, Chola, and Chalukya architectural styles.

Four Rajagopurams adorn the temple walls, leading to spacious mandapams and culminating in a five-storied Vimana Gopuram atop the sanctum sanctorum. Inside the garba gruha stands a majestic 12-feet tall statue of Lord Sri Venkateshwara, said to be the largest in Telangana. Noteworthy features include a 120-feet Hunumana Mandapa housing a 40-feet monolith statue of Hanuman, and a massive bronze bell weighing about one and- a-half tons, the second largest in India.

DNV Prasad Sthapathi, the chief sculptor of Statue of Equality, and related structures on the premises, supervised the entire temple construction, assembling skilled artisans from different States to craft the temple complex. While some areas like Sri Jala Narayana Swami Sannidhi, Sreevari Padapeethamu, and Sri Lakshminarasimha Mandapam are already enchanting visitors, others like Sri Bhuvaraha Mandapam and Karya Siddhi Hanuman Sannidhi are in the midst of construction, promising even grander experiences in the future.

The temple features the Jala Narayana Swami Sannidhi, a water-filled sanctum illuminated with lights in the evening, offering a visual delight to visitors. Additionally, there are the Sreevari Padapeethamu, Lakshminarasimha Mandapamu, Garudalwar Sthambham, Karya Siddhi Hanuman Sannidhi, Garuda Mandapamu, and a Ganesha temple. However, the Annadhana Sathramu and Kalyana Mandapamu are still under construction. Access to the temple is primarily through the highway road from Uppal, with two entry roads available after a u-turn from the highway. There is an ongoing road construction from the National Highway to the temple.

Pandya Booed, This Time At MI's Home. Wankhede Chants "Rohit…Rohit"

A now familiar scene got repeated at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai, as the IPL side’s skipper Hardik Pandya got booed by the crowd. Since he replaced Rohit Sharma as MI skipper after returning to his original franchise following two seasons at the helm of the Gujarat Titans (GT), Hardik Pandya has faced jeers and boos from a section of fans while also facing scrutiny from former India players.

Adding to his woes, the five-time IPL champions got off to the worst possible start this season, losing their lung-opener to GT and also going down in their second to the Sunrisers Hyderabad.

Video of Pandya getting booed went viral. England’s World Cup-winning skipper Eoin Morgan said on Jio Cinema: “I’ve never seen a home captain getting booed like that”.

After being booed by the fans in Hyderabad, the MI skipper didn’t receive a warm reception at the home ground, Wankhede Stadium, as fans continued the trend of booing the all-rounder.

Former India player turned cricket commentator Sanjay Manjrekar asked the Wankhede crowd to “behave” as fans booed Mumbai Indians (MI) skipper Hardik Pandya during the toss against Rajasthan Royals (RR) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season on Monday.

When Manjrekar introduced Hardik as the MI skipper, the fans didn’t shy away from expressing themselves as they booed the 30-year-old.

While introducing the captains of both teams during the toss, Manjrekar asked the crowd to “behave” as they continued to boo the newly appointed MI skipper for the third consecutive game.

“With the two captains with me, Mumbai Indians captain Hardik Pandya, big round of applause, ladies and gentlemen. Behave!” Manjrekar said in a video posted by IPL on X.

Right at that moment, according to news agency PTI, Rohit, in his training kit, was meeting his former teammate Harbhajan Singh who was at the field as one of the commentators doing the pre-match show.

If they were not enough, Pandya again found himself at the receiving end of crowd’s displeasure, especially from the Sachin Tendulkar stand when he walked out to bat with his team reeling at 20/4 in the fourth over.

Additionally, as per officials here, the fans were allowed inside the stadium only after their banners were confiscated due to an election commission directive given to the Mumbai police.

However, there was an element of miscommunication as well as misinterpretation since the directive was about not allowing political banners but fans complained on social media about all banners being taken away.

There were, nevertheless, a few fans who were able to carry their banners inside.

Hezbollah launches artillery attack on Israeli military team

Hezbollah carries out a new attack on an Israeli military site in north of the occupied Palestine.

Hezbollah has carried out a fresh attack on an Israeli military site amid a continued push by the Lebanese resistance movement to force the regime to end its aggression on Palestinians in Gaza.

Hezbollah said in a Monday statement carried by the Al Manar TV channel that it had targeted a group of Israeli military officers in a site located in the north of occupied Palestine.

“Islamic Resistance fighters targeted at 04:00 pm on Monday, April 1, 2024, a technical team of the Israeli enemy while they were conducting maintenance on technical and espionage equipment at the Al-Baghdadi site with artillery shells, causing confirmed injuries,” said the statement.

Hezbollah has been trading fire with Israel on an almost daily basis since the regime began its one-side war on Gaza in early October.

However, Hezbollah has avoided a direct conformation with Israel although senior officials of the group have warned that it will respond decisively if Israel chooses to attack Lebanon.

Diplomatic efforts by Israel’s Western allies, including the United States, to persuade Hezbollah to halt its attacks on Israel have failed so far as the group insists the attacks will continue until Israel’s aggression on Gaza stops completely.

Israel has kept silent about the number of casualties it has suffered in Hezbollah attacks in recent months. That comes as official statements from the Lebanese government and Hezbollah show more than 300 people, including Hezbollah fighters, have been killed in Israeli attacks on Lebanon.

Israel’s aggression on Gaza has claimed the lives of more than 32,000 people so far, with a significant part of the fatalities being women and children living in temporary shelters in the besieged enclave.

Drought due to negligence of Government: Vinod Kumar

Rajanna-Sircilla: BRS leader and former MP, B Vinod Kumar said thousands of cusecs of water at Meddigadda were flowing down without being utilized for any purpose due to the negligence of the Congress government.

Telangana, which had never experienced such a drought in the last ten years, was reeling under a severe drought within hundred days of the Congress party assuming power in the State, said Vinod Kumar, who along with former MLA Sunke Ravishankar, BRS district president Thota Agaiah and others examined the dried up Mid Manair reservoir near Shabashpalli of Boinpally mandal on Monday.

He said that the first ever drought erupted in the Yasangi season as the State government had neglected irrigation projects on the pretext of the sinking of three pillars at Medigadda.

This would not have happened if repair works were taken up and moreover, paddy crop would not have withered.

At least now, the government should construct a cofferdam at Medigadda since the water flow in the Godavari river would increase after July, he said.

Farmers were facing troubles as paddy fields spread in thousands of acres had withered due to lack of water, he said and demanded the government to provide Rs 25,000 compensation for withered crops by completing enumeration process on fast-track mode.
