Google To Destroy Billions Of Browsing Data To Settle Consumer Privacy Lawsuit

The class action involved millions of Google users (Representational)

Google agreed to destroy billions of data records to settle a lawsuit claiming it secretly tracked the internet use of people who thought they were browsing privately.

Terms of the settlement were filed on Monday in the Oakland, California federal court, and require approval by U.S. District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers.

Lawyers for the plaintiffs valued the accord at more than $5 billion, and as high as $7.8 billion. Though users will not receive damages, they may still sue individually for damages.

The class action began in 2020, covering millions of Google users who used private browsing since June 1, 2016.

Users alleged that Google’s analytics, cookies, and apps let the Alphabet unit improperly track people who set Google’s Chrome browser to “Incognito” mode and other browsers to “private” browsing mode.

They said this turned Google into an “unaccountable trove of information” by letting it learn about their friends, favorite foods, hobbies, shopping habits, and the “most intimate and potentially embarrassing things” they hunt for online.

Under the settlement, Google will update disclosures about what it collects in “private” browsing, a process it has already begun. It will also let Incognito users block third-party cookies for five years.

“The result is that Google will collect less data from users’ private browsing sessions and that Google will make less money from the data,” the plaintiffs’ lawyers wrote.

Google did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

According to court papers, Google supports final approval of the settlement but disagrees with the plaintiffs’ “legal and factual characterizations.”

David Boies, a lawyer for the plaintiffs, in a statement called the settlement “a historic step in requiring honesty and accountability from dominant technology companies.”

A preliminary settlement had been reached in December, advertising a scheduled Feb. 5, 2024 trial. Terms were not disclosed at the time. The plaintiffs’ lawyers plan to later seek unspecified legal fees payable by Google.

Temporary Channels Being Created To Aid Baltimore Bridge Response

Temporary Channels Being Created To Aid Baltimore Bridge Response

The port’s ongoing closure has hit the US economy, Maryland’s Governor said (File)

Washington:

US authorities working on the Baltimore bridge collapse told AFP on Monday that they plan to open two small, temporary channels to let ships access the site of the incident.

These channels will initially only be open to vessels involved in the Francis Scott Key Bridge cleanup operation, and will not be big enough to allow cargo and container ships to pass through.

The first of the channels is scheduled to open on Monday, US Coast Guard Petty Officer Kimberly Reaves told AFP, adding that a second channel would open at a later date.

The temporary channels are being created as work continues on the mammoth task of clearing the harbor of the steel structure, which was destroyed in a matter of seconds last Tuesday when an out-of-control ship struck it, killing six people.

The authorities hope that removing the bridge — by cutting it into smaller sections and lifting them out — will help rescuers recover all the victims’ bodies as well as reopen the crucial shipping lane.

No Public Use

“The channel is being opened to people involved in the response,” US Coast Guard Petty Officer Carmen Caver told AFP on Monday.

“We have no plans as of now to open it to public use, but you may see ships transiting if they’re involved with the actual operations,” she added.

The first temporary channel will have a depth of 11 feet, a 264-foot horizontal clearance, and a vertical clearance of 96 feet, the multi-agency task force overseeing the operation said in a statement.

The temporary channel “is not big enough for any container or cargo ships to pass through,” Caver told AFP, adding: “They’re working on a plan to make it slowly open to more and more people.”

The port of Baltimore is a key hub for the auto industry, handling almost 850,000 autos and light trucks last year — more than any other US port — according to Maryland state figures.

It also ranked first for farm and construction machinery, as well as imported sugar and gypsum, and second for coal exports.

The port’s ongoing closure is already hitting the US economy, Maryland Governor Wes Moore told MSNBC on Sunday.

“It’s impacting people all over the country,” he said.

Iranian envoy reacts to Israeli attack on country's consulate

The Israeli regime attacked Iran’s consulate in the Syrian capital of Damascus on Monday evening. The Israeli aggression led to the destruction of the entire building and the martyrdom and injury of the entire people inside it.

Reacting to the incident, Akbari said that the Zionist regime targeted the consulate building and the ambassador’s residence, which was located next to the Iranian embassy.

“The Israeli F35 fighters from the occupied Golan targeted this building with six missiles. I was at my workplace in the embassy and I witnessed from my room that this building was damaged,” he said.

He went on to say that It is not the first time that the Zionist regime has committed such crimes, which is against international rules. “This regime had previously attacked diplomatic centers and embassies.”

“The Zionist regime has acted against international laws, which will result in our decisive response,” the senior Iranian diplomat stressed.

Sayin that the debris removal process has not been completed yet, Akbari underlined that at least 5 people were martyred, three of whom were Iran’s military attachés in Syria.

CS Santhi Kumari calls for strict implementation of MCC in State

Hyderabad: Chief Secretary A Santhi Kumari on Monday directed the officials to enforce the model code of conduct strictly for ensuring free, fair and peaceful conduct of the Lok Sabha elections in the State.

The Chief Secretary held a meeting with officials and reviewed the implementation of the model code of conduct. Issues pertaining to law and order situation, setting up of check posts and daily seizure reports etc were discussed during the meeting.

Officials were directed to intensify surveillance at Shamshabad and Begumpet airports, besides notifying dry days in the border districts when elections are held in the neighboring States as per the Election Commission guidelines.

“Forest department officials should identify clandestine routes in forests that are used by smugglers and increase surveillance,” Santhi Kumari said.

DGP Ravi Gupta informed that interstate meetings with all the neighbouring States were held and 85 border check posts have been set up by Telangana.

Integrated check posts, flying squads and static surveillance teams have stepped up vigil, resulting in seizure of around Rs. 35 crores during this last fortnight after the model code of conduct came into force.

Mukul Rohatgi Says Island No Exchange Of Territory, Was Given to Sri Lanka

New Delhi:

Senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi, amid the huge row about Lankan island Katchatheevu, has said what makes the case of different is that there was no give and take, which is the normal practice when territory is involved. India had given away the island to Sri Lanka, without getting anything in return, he underscored in an exclusive interview with NDTV today.

The tiny island near Rameswaram has become a political talking point over the weekend, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagging the issue at a rally in Meerut and also on social media, hitting out at the Congress.

Katchatheevu — a disputed area since the British period — was given to Sri Lanka by former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1974 under an agreement with the island nation.

It had upset Tamil sentiments and resurfaced on the eve of the general elections. Amid BJP efforts to gain political traction in Tamil Nadu, state BJP chief K Annamalai had filed an RTI query.

In 2014, Mr Rohatgi, who was then the Attorney General, had told the Supreme Court that to retrieve Katchatheevu, “we have to go to war”. Asked about that statement today, he gave a background.

“Normally we have territorial exchanges. We had exchanges with Pakistan in the past… in 1958-1960 we had some exchanges with Pakistan. Because that was an aftermath of Independence and it was understandable,” Mr Rohatgi told NDTV.

“I remember some years ago, the current government also had some exchanges with Bangladesh. It was some enclaves. Some give and take of territory can happen but in this case it was only give… The island was handed over to Sri Lanka. Why the island was handed over, what did we get in return, these are questions the Congress should answer,” he added.

His remarks also address Opposition questions on why the government has not taken action on the issue since coming to power in 2014.

Yesterday, Tamil Nadu’s ruling DMK commented that if PM Modi was keen on Katchatheevu, he could have reclaimed that island during his 10 years in office. “Why did not he take up the Katchatheevu issue?” senior party leader RS Bharathi has said.

Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge had pointed out that the BJP-led government had made a similar “friendly gesture” to Bangladesh regarding the exchange of border enclaves.
