Spain will recognize Palestine state by July: Reports

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez says his country will recognize the Palestinian statehood by July, reports say, days after he publicized his plan on social media.

Sanchez was cited by the state news agency EFE and newspapers El Pais and La Vanguardia on Tuesday.

In a post on X, the prime minister had said he would propose the plan to the Spanish parliament by the end of the current legislature – mid-2027.

“We have to think seriously about doing it in the first half of this year,” Sanchez said.

The Spanish prime minister made the remarks in the Jordanian capital, Amman, on the first day of visits to Jordan, Qatar and Saudi Arabia.

Sanchez said he believed there would soon be a “critical mass” within the European Union to push several member states to take the same stance.

Reports said Sanchez, one of the most vocal critics of Israel’s brutal campaign in Gaza, highlighted ongoing debates on the issue at the United Nations.

The Spanish leader made the comments at a time when Israel has come under mounting international pressure to halt hostilities in Gaza.

Since the start of the campaign in early October, the regime has killed more than 32,800 Palestinians and injured nearly 75,400 others.

On March 22, Spain, Ireland, Malta and Slovenia issued a joint statement on the sidelines of a European Union leaders’ summit in Brussels that were “ready to recognize Palestine” as soon as the conditions for the setting up of a state were met.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has long ruled out Palestinian statehood. Since 1988, 139 out of 193 UN member states have recognized Palestinian statehood.

Northern Territory officials have taken drastic steps to restore order

A wave of violence shattered the peace of Alice Springs, Australia this week. A funeral for an 18-year-old tragically turned chaotic, leaving the community stunned. Tensions escalated, leading to a targeted attack on the historic Todd Tavern, causing significant damage.

Faced with this turmoil, Northern Territory officials have taken drastic steps to restore order. A two-week curfew for minors has been implemented to quell the unrest gripping this iconic Outback town.

Following Tuesday’s violence and reports of armed confrontations, Northern Territory officials are taking decisive action. Chief Minister Eva Lawler declared “Enough is enough” in response to the escalating situation.

To address the unrest, the government has imposed a strict two-week curfew on minors within the Alice Springs central business district. The curfew will be in effect from 6 pm to 6 am.

“This measure aims to ensure the safety of our youth,” Lawler affirmed. “If someone is under the age of 18 and found wandering the town centre during curfew hours, they will be promptly escorted home or to a secure location. Our streets must be safe for our children.”

The recent surge of unrest stems from a tragic event that occurred three weeks ago, in which an 18-year-old lost his life in a car accident. Local reports indicate that the young man was seated precariously on the door of a vehicle suspected to be stolen when the tragedy occurred.

The ensuing expressions of grief and anger materialized into the chaos witnessed on Tuesday, with Darren Clark, the founder of the community group Action for Alice, providing insight into the underlying motivations.

“They’re seeking retribution,” Clark revealed in an interview with radio station 2GB Sydney. “The target appears to be the driver of the car involved in the fatal accident.”

Alice Springs, a remote town in Australia’s vast Outback region some 2,000 km (1,243 miles) northwest of Sydney, is the gateway to major tourist attractions including the giant red sandstone monolith of Uluru, formerly known as Ayers Rock, Reuters reported.

A fifth of the 26,000 residents of Alice Springs are Indigenous Australians, who have been historically marginalised since the island continent was colonised by Great Britain in 1788.

The government has for years curbed alcohol sales in the town in a bid to reduce rampant violence and sexual abuse.

Mumbai Girl Dies By Suicide, Family Says Was "Stressed" By Her 1st Period

Mumbai Girl Dies By Suicide, Family Says Was 'Stressed' By Her 1st Period

The Malad home of the 14-year-old girl who dies by suicide

Mumbai:

She was 14. Had never been to school. Then came her first period. Even though she was informed by her mother that it is “normal”, the girl died a day later by suicide unable to handle the “stress”, says family.

The death of the Mumbai girl, who lived in a chawl in Malad, on March 26 has reignited a national conversation about period awareness.

“She was under stress. We shouldn’t have left her alone. There was pain; she did not understand what happened. I told her it was normal. But I didn’t think she would take such a terrible step,” her mother told NDTV.

The cops say they are recording the statement of the neighbours and will investigate the matter.

Sumita Belare, who has been working on health issues in the same area for many years, said that women and girls shy away from even saying the word period or menstruation.

“The girls refer to it as water. When we take workshops on this subject, family members do not send girls or women and say, what will they do? This is common. Why talk about it. They look down upon it. I am surprised at this thought. And this thinking is prevalent among women of almost every category, not just those who are economically or socially backward,” said Sumita Belare, Malad Yuva Sanstha.

This very important and basic thing of life should be made mandatory in the school curriculum, said Prateek Thorat, a teacher.

“In Marathwada, a girl said that her father told her that God has “punished” her. That’s why she doesn’t go to school. Period is called a punishment. Information about periods and body party should be made mandatory from Class 1. Only then will thinking change,” said Mr Thorat.
