First Batch Of Over 60 Indian Workers Leave For Israel: Envoy

“We have over 18,000 caregivers and other professionals in Israel,” said MEA spokesperson on March 8

New Delhi:

The first batch of over 60 Indian construction workers is going to Israel, Israeli envoy to India Naor Gilon said on Tuesday.

In a post on X, he hoped that the workers would become ‘ambassadors’ of the great people-to-people relations between the two countries.

He said the workers are going to Israel under the framework of a government-to-government agreement and complimented India’s National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) for the initiative.

“Today we had a farewell event from the first batch of 60+ Indian construction workers going to Israel under the G2G agreement. This is an outcome of hard work of many, including @NSDCINDIA,” Gilon said.

“I’m sure that the workers become ‘ambassadors’ of the great P2P relations between India and Israel,” he said.

There is no official announcement yet on firming up any government-to-government agreement on employment of Indian workers in Israel.

Following the Israel-Hamas conflict, there were media reports that said the Israeli construction industry is looking at recruiting 100,000 Indian workers to replace the 90,000 Palestinians. Last month, India said it is focusing on ensuring the safety and security of all its citizens in Israel in the wake of the death of an Indian in that country in a missile attack reportedly launched by Hezbollah.

“We have over 18,000 caregivers and other professionals in Israel. Their safety and security is of prime concern for us,” External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal had said on March 8.

"We Don't Doubt Our Victory": BJP Chief JP Nadda In Madhya Pradesh

'We Don't Doubt Our Victory': BJP Chief JP Nadda In Madhya Pradesh

BJP Chief JP Nadda was addressing a gathering in Madhya Pradesh’s Jabalpur on Tuesday.

Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh:

Highlighting the achievements of the Bhartiya Janata party under PM Modi’s rule, BJP national President JP Nadda on Tuesday said that it is the hard work of the past generations, which has led the BJP on the path of grand triumph.

While addressing a gathering in Madhya Pradesh’s Jabalpur, JP Nadda said, “We have witnessed that era when we were uncertain about our victory as we filed our nomination papers. Today, the BJP is advancing on the path of grand triumph. From the time when we used to file nomination papers, there were doubts in our minds, about if we would win the elections or not? Now when we have entered the battleground we don’t doubt our victory, we rather think what will be the difference in the vote percentage. It is the hard work and sacrifice of the generations who have worked, because of which the party has reached here”.

Highlighting the party’s achievements including the abrogation of Article 370 and a ban on Triple Talaq, Mr Nadda said that all this could happen only under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

“We are an ideology-based party. None of the leaders dared to remove triple talaq. It was the Modi government that brought Muslim women into the mainstream by ending the triple talaq,” Mr Nadda said.

“People used to say that Article 370 won’t be removed. But I am happy to say that under PM Modi’s leadership and due to his desire, and due to Home Minister Amit Shah’s strategy, Article 370 was abrogated and ‘one nation, one mark, one constitution’ was ensured in the country,” he added.

Bharatiya Janata Party national president JP Nadda is on a two-day visit to Madhya Pradesh, during which he will hold a crucial organisational meeting, informed an official press release.

Earlier in an address in MP’s Shehdol, BJP leader JP Nadda lashed out at the Congress party over their ‘divisive politics’ in the country.

“For a long time, Shahdol has seen a period when this area was neglected. The governments that were formed at that time used to fight elections by dividing the society, in the name of casteism, nepotism and appeasement, but under the leadership of PM Modi, by ending casteism and binding the society together, we started the politics of development with the mantra of ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas’,” said Mr Nadda.

Lok Sabha elections in Madhya Pradesh are scheduled to be held in the first four phases of the total seven phases dated April 19, April 26, May 7, and May 13.

UNSC holds emergency meeting on Israeli attack on Iranian consulate

The United Nations Security Council has held an emergency meeting on Israel’s terrorist attack on the consular section of the Iranian embassy in Syria.

Addressing the event on Tuesday in New York, the US, Iran’s mission to the UN called on the world body to categorically denounce Israel’s violation of international regulations.

Zahra Ershadi, Iran’s deputy permanent representative to the United Nations, said Israel is seeking to escalate tensions in the region while avoiding full responsibility for its actions.

She said the regime defies Security Council resolutions and shows disregard for its international obligations. The Russian ambassador also slammed the attack, calling it “flagrant violation” of Syria’s sovereignty.

Moscow said Israel’s actions are set to fuel the ongoing regional conflict further and must immediately stop.

Slamming the “flagrant violation” of Syria’s sovereignty, UN envoy Vasily Nebenzia told a Security Council meeting that Russia was “of the view that such aggressive actions by Israel are designed to further fuel the conflict. They are absolutely unacceptable and must stop.”

The Security Council session was held at the request of Russia over the Israeli strike on Tuesday afternoon.

Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian on Tuesday called on the UN Security Council to take “appropriate and explicit action” to condemn the deadly Israeli attack on Iran’s consulate in the Syrian capital, Damascus.

Amir-Abdollahian said he reminded UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in a phone call that the United Nations and its Security Council are responsible for ensuring international peace and security.

Guterres’ spokesman Stephane Dujarric said on Tuesday that the UN chief “reaffirms that the principle of the inviolability of diplomatic and consular premises and personnel must be respected in all cases by international law.”

On Monday, Israeli warplanes bombed the Iranian consulate in Damascus, located next to the embassy building.

The attack killed two senior Iranian military personnel who were on an advisory mission to Syria as well as five of their accompanying officers.

Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps named Brigadier General Mohammad Reza Zahedi, a commander of the IRGC’s Quds Force, and his deputy General Mohammad Hadi Haji Rahimi were among the seven martyrs of the terrorist attack.

Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei has vowed that Iran will “punish” Israel and make the evil regime “regret” its crime of assassinating the country’s military advisors in Syria.

Iran’s President Ebrahim Raeisi has also said Israel had resorted to indiscriminate assassinations after back-to-back failures in the face of the resistance, warning that the regime’s latest crime against Iranian military advisers in Syria “will not go unanswered.”

"Will Remain A Hero": M Kharge As Manmohan Singh Retires From Rajya Sabha

'Will Remain A Hero': M Kharge As Manmohan Singh Retires From Rajya Sabha

Mr Kharge expressed his gratitude to Manmohan Singh for his wisdom and guidance (File)

Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will retire from Rajya Sabha tomorrow, ending his 33-year-long stint. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge wrote a heartfelt letter dedicated to the 91-year-old’s work, the policies he introduced during his tenure as the PM and finance minister, and his legacy.

Mr Kharge said in the letter that with Manmohan Singh’s retirement, “an era comes to an end”. “Very few people have accomplished as much as you for the nation and its people,” he wrote. Mr Kharge expressed his gratitude to Manmohan Singh for his wisdom and guidance and said it was a “privilege” for him to serve under Singh’s cabinet. “Over the last few years, you have made it a point to be available for the Congress party despite personal inconveniences. For this, the party and I will always remain grateful,” he added.

Appreciating the economic policies introduced by Manmohan Singh, Mr Kharge said, “You have shown that it is possible to pursue economic policies that were equally beneficial to large groups, young entrepreneurs, small businesses, the salaried class, and the poor .” “Thanks to your policies, India was able to lift 27 crore people, the highest number of poor people out of poverty in the world while you were the Prime Minister,” he said.

He also said that Manmohan Singh will always remain “a hero to the middle class and the aspirational youth, a leader and guide to the industrialists and entrepreneurs, and a benefactor to all those poor who were able to climb out of poverty due to your economic policies.”

Mr Kharge praised Manmohan Singh for introducing the MGNREGA scheme and said that it continues to provide relief to rural workers during times of crisis. “The nation and particularly the rural population will remember you for ensuring that they can earn a living and live with self-respect through this scheme,” he wrote.

In the letter, Mr Kharge mentioned several achievements and key moments of Manmohan Singh’s tenure as the PM and as finance minister. He appreciates him for pursuing the historic Indo-US Nuclear Deal “even if it meant putting your government at risk for the sake of the nation’s security.” He also mentions remembering when former US President Obama said for Manmohan Singh, “Whenever the Indian Prime Minister speaks, the whole world listens to him.”

Mr Kharge said that we live in times that are largely shaped by Manmohan Singh. “The economic prosperity and stability that we enjoy today is built on the foundations laid by you along with our former Prime Minister, Bharat Ratna Shri P.V. Narasimha Rao.”

“The current set of leaders who have reaped the benefits of your work are reluctant to credit you due to political biases,” Mr Kharge said, attacking the ruling government. He said that the reforms done by the current government has its seed in the work initiated during the UPA government headed by Manmohan Singh.

Mr Kharge said that the nation misses the quiet yet strong dignity Manmohan Singh brought to the office of the Prime Minister. “The Parliament will now miss your wisdom and experience. Your dignified, measured, soft-spoken yet statesman like words are in contrast to the loud voices filled with lies that signify the current politics,” he said.

Mr Kharge also recalled Manmohan Singh’s speech on demonetisation, in which he called the move a “monumental management failure” and “an organised loot and legalised plunder”.

“Even as you retire from active politics, I hope that you will continue to be the voice of wisdom and moral compass to the nation by speaking to the citizens of our country as often as possible. I wish you peace, health, and happiness,” said Mr Kharge.

Russia destroys more Ukrainian warplanes, ammunition warehouses

Russia says the army has destroyed three Soviet-era warplanes in an operation against a Ukrainian air base in the south of the country.

The Defense Ministry said in a statement on Sunday that the warplanes, Su-25 close air support, were stationed at Ukraine’s Voznesensk airfield in Nikolaev Region.

The operation was conducted using tactical aircraft, missile forces and troops’ artillery, the ministry said without providing further details.

The latest operation brought the total number of Ukrainian aircraft to 580, since Russia launched its “special military operation” in the country in February 2022.

The ministry also said that the Russian army destroyed a guidance radar array, a combat control vehicle, three S–300 anti-aircraft missile system launchers and two ammunition warehouses.

They also damaged a storage facility for unmanned aerial vehicles in Ukraine.

According to the statement, the Ukrainian forces and its military equipment were targeted in 126 areas.

In total, Russia has shot down 270 helicopters and 17,951 drones since the start of the war, said the defense ministry.

Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu said late last year that the country’s forces had received new military systems, which at the time allowed them to shoot down 24 Ukrainian planes in just five days.

A report by TASS news agency said later that Russia had used an S-400 Triumph air defense system, which has a 400km range.

Ukraine’s jet fleet is believed to consist mainly of Soviet-era Su-27 and MiG-29 fighters, Su-24 frontline bombers, as well as a handful of Su-25 close air support planes. The country has lost much of its air force during the war with Russia.

Kiev has consistently pursued the acquisition of F-16s from NATO member states, but no deliveries have been made yet.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said earlier this week that the warplanes will appear in skies over Ukraine in midsummer.

Russia has warned the West against sending the nuclear-capable jets to Ukraine, saying the move would be an “unacceptable escalation” of the current conflict.

Video: Siraj On 'Gambhir And Kohli' Factor In India's 2011 World Cup Win

India batting talisman Virat Kohli talked about his 2011 ODI World Cup memories and said that it will always be an ‘experience’ that he will never forget. On this day in 2011, the Indian cricket team lifted the ICC Cricket WC 2011, bringing back the cup home after 28 years following team’s unexpected and historic triumph back in 1983. This is the most iconic moment of Indian cricket in the 21st century. Kohli scored 35 runs from 49 balls at a strike rate of 71.43 in the final match of the ODI World Cup 2011. He played a crucial partnership of 83 runs for the third-wicket with Gautam Gambhir.

In a video shared on the official social media handle of the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), Kohli said that it will be a special thing for him since they have won the prestigious tournament in front of the home fans.

The former India skipper added that the World Cup-winning squad had ‘goosebumps’ when the song ‘Vande Mataram’ was played at the stadium. Kohli also said that it will always be his ‘core memory’ from the tournament.

“The fact that we played in Wankhede and we ended up winning is always gonna be a special thing winning in front of your home fans is an experience I will never ever forget and that night, the songs that were been played, like Vande Mataram. Goosebumps that we all felt is always gonna be a core memory for me,” Kohli said.

On the other hand, India pacer Mohammed Siraj praised Kohli and Gambhir’s partnership for the third wicket, and said that it was very crucial for the team.

“At the start, we lost quick wickets. After that, the partnership between Virat Kohli and Gautam Gambhir was very crucial. I really liked Gauti bhai’s inning. And at the end, Mahi bhai’s six,” Siraj said.

“Exactly 13 years since India lifted that World Cup at the #Wankhede! We asked our players about their favourite memories from that night,” RCB wrote on X while sharing the video.

Summarizing the final match against Sri Lanka, Gambhir (97) and MS Dhoni (91*), were the main mastermind behind India’s triumph as they helped the ‘Men in Blue’ chase the 275-run target given by Kumar Sangakkara’s side.

Dhoni was named the ‘Player of the Match’ after he swung his bat to deliver the decisive blow, a massive six into the stands which helped India win the game by six wickets.

"Outraged": US Slams Israeli Strike That Killed Aid Workers In Gaza

'Outraged': US Slams Israeli Strike That Killed Aid Workers In Gaza

“There’s accountability to be held here,” the White House official said after Israel killed aid workers.

Washington:

The White House said on Tuesday it was “outraged” by an Israeli airstrike in Gaza that killed seven people working for World Central Kitchen (WCK), and that President Joe Biden called the charity aid group’s founder to share his condolences.

“We were outraged to learn of an IDF strike that killed a number of civilian humanitarian workers yesterday from the World Central Kitchen,” White House spokesperson John Kirby told reporters during a briefing in Washington.

Asked whether the U.S. would condemn the Israeli airstrike, Kirby said of his use of the word “outraged”: “I think you can fairly characterize that as condemning the strike itself.”

Biden told WCK founder Jose Andres that he will make clear to Israel that aid workers must be protected, White House spokesperson Karine Jean-Pierre told the same briefing.

The strike on the WCK convoy killed citizens of Australia, Britain and Poland as well as Palestinians and a dual citizen of the United States and Canada. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said earlier that the strike was tragic and unintended, and the Israeli military pledged an independent inquiry.

The Israelis have “already said this was on them,” Kirby said. “There’s accountability to be held here.”

“There are issues of deconfliction that clearly need to be fleshed out and improved,” Kirby said, adding that Washington would continue to make sure Israel can defend itself.

Congress Slams BJP Over Its Candidate's 'Samvidhanik Badlav' Remarks

Congress Slams BJP Over Its Rajasthan Candidate's 'Samvidhanik Badlav' Remarks

BJP’s Jyoti Mirdha is contesting from Rajasthan’s Nagaur. (File)

New Delhi:

The Congress on Tuesday claimed that after Anantkumar Hegde, another leader of the ruling BJP, Jyoti Mirdha, has openly said that the party’s aim is to change the Constitution, while asserting that it is a “deliberate strategy”.

Senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor shared on X a post on an undated video of Ms Mirdha, the BJP candidate from Rajasthan’s Nagaur in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls, in which she is purportedly heard talking about the need for the saffron party to secure a majority in both Houses of Parliament to be able to make constitutional amendments.

“After Anant Hegde let the cat out of the bag, BJP leaders hastily stuffed it back in and dropped him from their candidate list. Now another BJP candidate openly says the BJP’s aim is to change the Constitution,” Mr Tharoor said on X.

How many more candidates can the BJP disavow for revealing the truth, he asked.

Reacting to Mr Tharoor’s post, Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said on X: “These are all orchestrated by the MahaSutradhar himself. It is deliberate strategy.” Congress MP M K Raghavan also shared the video on the microblogging platform and said, “BJP candidate Jyoti Mirdha contesting from Nagaur, Rajasthan was speaking about how the BJP plans to change the Constitution.” “BJP MP Anant Hegde had also said that BJP will change the Constitution if they get 400 seats in the Lok Sabha elections,” he said.

In the video, Mr Mirdha is heard saying, “Desh ke hit mein kai kathor nirnay karne padte hain. Unke liye humein samvidhanik badlav karne padhte hain. Agar samvidhan ke andar humein koi badlav karna hota hai toh aap mein se kai log jaante hain uske liye dono jo humare sadan hain, Lok Sabha aur Rajya Sabha, unke andar haami chahiye hoti hai (Several tough decisions need to be taken in the country’s interest. We have to make constitutional amendments for them. If we have to make amendments in the Constitution, many of you would know that we need the nod of both Houses of Parliament, the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha).” “Lok Sabha mein aaj BJP aur NDA ke pas prachand bahumat hai, us mein koi kami nahi hai, lekin Rajya Sabha mein aaj bhi humari majority nahi hai. Agar is baar teesri baar NDA ki sarkar aati hai…. (In the Lok Sabha, the BJP and the NDA have a massive mandate, but we still do not have a majority in the Rajya Sabha. If the NDA government returns to power for a third time…),” she purportedly said.

Replying to Mr Tharoor’s criticism, Ms Mirdha said, “As far as I understand, the BJP’s aim is to serve the national and public interest as it gets articulated in the democratic discourse. And if for those purposes the Constitution needs to be amended then so be it.” “Most recently the cat was let out of the bag by the 106th constitutional amendment for Women’s Reservation Bill in September last year for which it seems you lent a reluctant helping hand,” she said.

Ms Mirdha also shared on X her clarification on the matter, saying that in a public meeting on March 31, her general comment “aimed at explaining the process of constitutional amendment was unnecessarily blown out of proportion by some honourable leaders of the opposition, which in my opinion is not only unnecessary but also entirely undesirable”.

All the distinguished individuals criticizing this are well-versed in law and the Constitution, she said.

“And they all are aware that from 1950 to last year, 106 amendments have been made to the Constitution. The most recent and historic amendment last year has finally realised our decades-long dream of a 33% reservation for women in Parliament, which was also vigorously supported by these very individuals in Parliament.

“In the past, many amendments have been made to the Constitution with the national and public interest in mind,” Ms Mirdha said.

“It is imperative to say that our sacred Constitution is a living document, amended from time to time considering the welfare of the people and the country,” she said.

The reference to Baba Saheb Ambedkar used to criticise me is also misplaced, Ms Mirdha said in her clarification, adding that he too had foreseen the need and hence provided for Article 368 in the Constitution for amendment.

“Thus, any politics over my statement does not reflect a healthy mindset,” she said.

Sharing MS Mirdha’s video, the Congress said in a post on X, “This is BJP candidate Jyoti Mirdha contesting from Nagaur, Rajasthan. Jyoti Mirdha says that to change the Constitution, we need an overwhelming majority in both the houses. BJP MP Anant Hegde has also said that if we get 400 seats in the Lok Sabha elections, we will change the Constitution.” “It is clear from these statements that BJP and PM Modi hate the Constitution and democracy. By abolishing the Constitution given by Babasaheb, BJP wants to snatch away the rights of the people,” the Congress alleged.

Ms Mirdha’s remarks come days after the BJP axed former Union minister Hegde, a six-term Lok Sabha member from Uttara Kannada, from its list of parliamentary poll candidates this time.

At a gathering at Karwar in Karnataka, Mr Hegde had said the BJP needs a two-thirds majority in both Houses of Parliament to amend the Constitution and “set right the distortions and unnecessary additions made to it by the Congress”.
