Editorial: Wages of climate change

Climate Change

The writing on the wall is very clear. The scorching heat wave currently sweeping large swathes of India, with intensity increasing year after year, is a grim reminder of the dangers of climate change, a result of the unbridled exploitation of natural resources like coal and other fossil fuels. Such intense heat waves are the clearest indicator that climate change impacts the entire world. Over the last few years, the spring season has shrunk in most parts of the country. Experts emphasise the need to take concrete measures to protect the most vulnerable from the scorching temperatures. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has now warned that heatwave spells could last 10-20 days, instead of four to eight days in the past. This year, several parts of south India experienced a hotter-than-usual March. Climate change has resulted in increasing frequency and intensity of extreme weather events. For every additional increment of global warming, changes in extremes will continue to be larger. For too long, India has been slow off the blocks on this critical front. During the Climate Summit in Glasgow in November 2021, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced enhanced climate targets for India — increasing the non-fossil energy capacity to 500 gigawatts and meeting 50% of the country’s energy needs through renewable sources by 2030. However, there are fears that this deadline will be missed as many States are not doing enough to substantially increase their non-fossil energy capacity.

It is baffling that solar energy’s vast potential remains underexploited in a country which witnesses sunny days for most of the year. The emissions caused by the burning of coal and other fossil fuels are worsening the situation. One of the world’s major consumers of coal, India needs to expedite its phase-out plans for this polluting fuel, overdependence on which can spell disaster. The most effective way of making that switch is to generate energy from sustainable sources like wind and solar. To switch to clean energy, the country must invest heavily in R&D and chalk out clear plans that are environmentally friendly for sectors like infrastructure, transport, industrial production and forestry. The country’s food security can also come under threat if immediate efforts are not made to sensitise farmers about opting for climate-smart practices like judiciously using fast-dwindling natural resources. The heat has already started to singe us and we no longer have the luxury of putting off till tomorrow what we must do today to arrest the slide. All the States are supposed to have put in place Heat Action Plans (HAPs) focused on creating an early warning system, increasing the capacity of healthcare professionals, promoting adaptive measures in workplaces and creating awareness. However, these are not updated regularly and do not have regular budgets to cater to the needs of the most vulnerable sections of society.

"Hats Off To Gambhir": Internet Explodes As Narine Slams 39-Ball-85 vs DC

Sunil Narine produced a stunning display of batting to slam a half-century in just 21 deliveries for Kolkata Knight Riders during their IPL 2024 match against Delhi Capitals on Wednesday. The all-rounder, who was once again sent to open the batting with Phil Salt, looked in sublime touch as he completely dismantled the DC bowling attack. Narine’s best over came against Ishant Sharma where he ended up scoring 26 runs with a barrage of boundaries as KKR scored 88 runs in the powerplay. He ended up scoring 85 in just 39 deliveries with the help of 7 boundaries and 7 sixes. Social media could not stop praising him and they also hailed KKR mentor Gautam Gambhir for promoting Narine.

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) skipper Shreyas Iyer won the toss and elected to bat.

DC and KKR are locking horns against each other in the 16th encounter of the IPL 2024. The Kolkata-based franchise are currently second in the points table with four points from two matches. Capitals are placed seventh with just two points from three matches.

Both teams are entering the game after winning their last games against their opponents. DC defeated five-time champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) by 20 runs on March 31 and Knight Riders defeated Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) by seven wickets on March 29.

“We’ll bat first. The wicket looks like a belter, no drastic change in the wicket when compared to the last game. It’s been quite a journey…Anything can happen on a given day, it’s important to stick to the process. We’ve Sunil (Narine) coming in and going after the bowlers in the first 6 overs, so his role is very clear and the rest know what’s expected of them. One change – Angrish Raghuvanshi comes in,” Iyer said after winning the toss.

DC skipper Rishabh Pant asserted that they would have batted as well as the wicket can get slower.

“We would have batted first as well, could get a bit slower. It was nice to be back with the group, but I’m not thinking too far ahead. The bowlers did a great job, the fast bowlers, and we’d like them to do it once again. Not thinking about the team combination for the first two games, but we’ve had people working hard in the nets. We just need to keep doing the right things – one change, Mukesh is injured and he’s replaced by Sumit,” Pant stated at the time of the toss.

Hyderabad:

A 35-year-old farmer died after being attacked by a wild elephant in Kumaram Bheem Asifabad district of Telangana on Wednesday, the forest department said.

The incident occurred on the outskirts of Burepalli village in Chinthalamanepally mandal of the district when the victim was working in an agricultural field, they said.

“For the first time a wild elephant entered Telangana from Maharashtra… there are no wild elephants in Telangana. It seems a herd of 70-75 elephants is moving along the other side of Pranahita river in Maharashtra. One of the elephants–a male tusker, strayed into Telangana by crossing Pranahita,” a senior forest department official told news agency PTI.

“Our Maharashtra counterparts had informed us in advance about the movement (of elephants) and we have been monitoring. We had requested the villagers not to venture that side. In spite of our warning one person had gone to the field where he was attacked by the elephant and died,” the official said.

The forest officials have cordoned off the entire area to make sure that elephant does not enter the village, he said.

“… if the elephant does not go back by tonight, then tomorrow we will have to drive it away,” the official added.

Udupi Village Decides To Boycott Upcoming Elections Over Poor Facilities

Udupi:

Residents of a village in Kapu assembly segment of the Udupi-Chikkamagaluru Lok Sabha constituency have decided to boycott the upcoming election, in protest against the poor civic amenities there.

The decision was taken by the villagers of Kattingeri, which is part of Moodubelle Gram Panchayat. They declared their refusal to partake in any forthcoming electoral processes, including the Lok Sabha elections, until their demands are met.

The villagers were aggrieved that Kattingeri grapples with a dearth of essential amenities such as roads, bridges, and functional public transport connectivity.

They lamented the lack of progress despite previous engagements with authorities, including a visit by the deputy commissioners in the past, which failed to yield tangible solutions.

Former President of Belle Gram Panchayat Shivaji S Suvarna highlighted the significant voter base in Kattingeri, estimating around a thousand eligible voters with substantial participation in past elections.

However, the absence of basic infrastructure remains a glaring issue, particularly the absence of roads and bridges, impeding access to vital services for the past six years, he said.

Former Taluk Panchayat President Devdas Hebbar underscored the unwavering resolve of the villagers, noting previous instances where boycotts were rescinded due to assurances from elected representatives.

However, this time, the villagers have stood firm against external pressures and enticements, and have committed to the decisions made at the meeting.

Ranjani Hegde, former President of Belle Gram Panchayat, informed PTI of the non-negotiable stance of the villagers that they would vote in the elections only if roadworks are completed and bus services to Kattingeri are resumed.

Expressing disillusionment with the local MLAs and MPs due to their apparent disregard for the village, Hegde said efforts were being made to garner attention to their problems, especially through correspondence with the District Election Officer and the State Election Commission about the boycott.

Shivpuri:

Union minister and the BJP’s Guna candidate Jyotiraditya Scindia on Wednesday said Congress has become “behosh” (unconscious) because of the “josh” (passion) of BJP workers.

He was speaking at a gathering of BJP workers at Khaniyadhana in Shivpuri district which comes under the Guna constituency.

“Because of the BJP workers’ ‘josh and hosh’ (passion and alertness), Congress has become ‘behosh’. We should not sit idle till we achieve the target given by Prime Minister Narendra Modi of winning more than 400 Lok Sabha seats,” he said.

He urged party workers to connect with 370 new voters in each booth for ensuring a historic victory for the Bharatiya Janata Party.

His grandmother, late BJP stalwart Vijayaraje Scindia used to carry a ‘gamcha’ (cotton scarf) to deal with the heat, and he too keeps an onion in his pocket while campaigning, the Union minister said. It is traditionally believed that the onion keeps heat stroke away.

BJP workers should work so hard that Congress would not get consciousness at all, Mr Scindia further said.

Congress has fielded Rao Yadvendra Singh Yadav against Mr Scindia in Guna seat which has a sizable number of Yadav voters.

In 2019, Mr Scindia as Congress candidate lost to the BJP’s Krishna Pal Singh Yadav by more than 1.25 lakh votes. Mr Scindia joined the BJP in 2020.

At least 10 civilians killed by ADF rebels in eastern DRC

According to local civil society, ADF rebels made an incursion into Mangodomu, a village located in the Beni territory of North Kivu province, which has been under military and police administration since 2021.

Colonel Charles Omeonga, the administrator of the Beni territory, reassured the population of the determination of the Armed Forces of the DRC to neutralize the ADF rebels.

The ADF was founded in the 1990s by several opposition movements in Uganda. Defeated by the Ugandan army, these rebels remained active in eastern DRC, which led to joint operations by the DRC and Uganda to track down this group, now affiliated with the Islamic State.

For decades, ADF rebels active in the Beni territory have continued to increase attacks against the population despite joint operations between Kinshasa and Kampala, which are still underway in the provinces of North Kivu and Ituri. Since May 2021, these two provinces have been placed under a state of siege, where civil authorities are replaced by military and police authorities.
