Helicopter Plucks Miners To Safety As Taiwan Searches For Missing After Earthquake

Rescuers knew the whereabouts of dozens more people trapped in a network of strongly built tunnels.

Hualien, Taiwan:

A helicopter plucked six miners to safety from a Taiwan quarry Thursday as rescuers worked to free scores of people trapped in highway tunnels after the island’s biggest earthquake in a quarter of a century.

Nine people were killed and more than 1,000 injured in Wednesday’s magnitude-7.4 quake, but strict building regulations and widespread public disaster awareness appear to have staved off a major catastrophe on the island.

Dozens of residents of the worst-hit city spent a night outdoors rather in apartments still being shaken by aftershocks, and a massive engineering operation was under way to fix damaged roads and prop up tilting buildings.

Dramatic video released Thursday by the island’s Central Emergency Operation Centre showed a helicopter flying two sorties to pluck six miners trapped in a gypsum quarry in Hualien county, near the epicentre of the quake.

Rescuers knew the whereabouts of dozens more people trapped in a network of strongly built tunnels in the county, a feature of the roads that cut through the scenic mountains and cliffs leading to Hualien City from the north and west.

“I also hope that we can use today’s time to find all people who are stranded and unaccounted for and help them settle down,” Premier Chen Chien-jen said after a briefing at an emergency operation centre in Hualien.

The island has been shaken by over 300 strong aftershocks since the first quake, and the government warned people to be wary of landslides or rockfalls if they ventured to the countryside for Qingming, a two-day public holiday that began Thursday.

Families traditionally visit the tombs of their ancestors on the holiday to clean the gravesites and burn offerings.

“Do not go to the mountains unless necessary,” warned President Tsai Ing-wen in a late-night message.

The latest figures from the national disaster agency said nine people had been killed and 1,050 injured in the quake.

Authorities were in contact with 101 people trapped in tunnels or cut-off areas, but had lost touch with another 46 — although they were believed to be safe.

In Hualien, a glass-fronted building now tilting at a 45-degree angle after half of its first floor pancaked has become something of a symbol of the quake.

“When the earthquake happened, we immediately evacuated the guests… and urged them to leave,” Wang Zhong-chang, the proprietor of a nearby Hualien Hero hotel, 55, told AFP.

“I stayed in this area the whole time — I haven’t left. There’s not much to fear. I’ve experienced it before… but this time was more severe.”

He was referring to the magnitude-7.6 quake of 1999 that killed 2,400 people, the deadliest natural disaster in the island’s history.

Over 100 people chose to sleep outdoors in tents at a shelter set up in an elementary school Wednesday night as the aftershocks continued.

“Our worry is when the big aftershocks happen it might be really hard for us to evacuate one more time — especially with the baby,” said Indonesian Hendri Sutrisno, 30, a professor at Donghua University.

He and his wife hid under a table with their infant when the earthquake struck before fleeing their apartment.

“We have all the necessary stuff, blankets, toilet and a place to rest,” he said.

Social media deluge

Social media was awash with video and images from around the island shared by people who experienced the quake.

In one clip, a man struggles to get out of a rooftop swimming pool as the water swirls violently. In another, a webcam catches three cats running amok as an apartment shakes from side to side.

Officials have yet to give an estimate for a national repair bill, but operations at Taiwan’s key chip-making foundries were minimally affected.

“Overall tool recovery of our fabs (fabrication facilities) reached more than 70 percent within 10 hours of the earthquake, with new fabs such as the Fab 18 facility reaching more than 80 percent,” said Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company — the world’s biggest chip maker.

China, which claims self-ruled Taiwan as part of its territory, was “paying close attention” to the quake and “willing to provide disaster relief assistance”, state news agency Xinhua said Wednesday.

In Washington, the White House said the United States was prepared to provide “any necessary assistance”.

Night Attack On Madhya Pradesh Toll Plaza, 2 Drown In Well While Fleeing

The attack, police said, took place around 10 pm on Tuesday night

Bhopal:

Two employees of a toll plaza in Madhya Pradesh fell into a well and drowned as they were running to save themselves during an attack by masked gunmen, allegedly over a toll tax dispute. The bodies of Agra’s Srinivas Parihar and Nagpur’s Shivaji Kandele were recovered from the well yesterday.

The incident, police have said, took place around 10 pm on Tuesday. Chilling footage from CCTV cameras at Dagrai toll plaza on National Highway – 44 show masked men on four bikes ride near the toll booths. They then start kicking at the doors of toll counters and some manage to enter the booths. The assailants are seen damaging computers, beating up the toll plaza staff and trying to drag them out.

The staff, it is learnt, ran into the adjoining field to save their lives when the assailants started firing in the air. As they ran, Parihar and Kandele fell into an uncovered well right behind the office and drowned.

The contract of the toll plaza between Jhansi and Gwalior changed on April 1, and it passed on to a new contractor. Some locals, it is learnt, had an understanding with the previous contractor and their vehicles allegedly cleared the toll booth without payment. The new contractor refused to play ball. This sparked a dispute and Tuesday night’s attack was planned to terrorise the new contractor, say reports.

A officer said a case has been registered against unidentified persons and probe is on.

Toll tax is a charge vehicle owners need to pay for using some expressways, tunnels, bridges etc. The amount is used for repair and maintenance. The charges vary depending on the size of the vehicle.

"Fan Of Whiskey": Courtroom Banter Between Chief Justice And Senior Lawyer

When Chief Justice, Lawyer Joked About 'Love For Whiskey' In Courtroom

The courtroom erupted in laughter.

New Delhi:

Senior advocate Dinesh Dwivedi and Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud shared a jovial moment in the Supreme Court on Wednesday.

Mr Dwivedi, with a hint of jest, attributed his multi-coloured hair to the recent Holi festivities. “Apologies for my colourful hair,” he chuckled, adding, “It is because of Holi. This is the disadvantage of having a lot of kids and grandkids around. You can’t save yourself.”

Chief Justice Chandrachud seized the opportunity to add a dash of humour to the conversation. “Nothing to do with alcohol?” he quipped, evoking laughter from those present.

Mr Dwivedi, joining in the laughter, playfully admitted, “It does. Holi means partly alcohol… and I must confess… I am a fan of whiskey.”

The courtroom erupted in laughter.

A nine-judge Constitution bench was hearing a case on industrial alcohol. The bench deliberated whether industrial alcohol is the same as edible alcohol that is available in the markets and the overlapping powers between the Centre and state governments on industrial alcohol production.

Mr Dwivedi, representing the state of Uttar Pradesh, argued that all forms of alcohol come under state control.

Iraqi Resistance strikes Israeli airbase, Ashdod with drones

The Islamic Resistance in Iraq, an umbrella group of anti-terror fighters, announced carrying out the attacks on Wednesday.

The first strike saw the forces using drones to hit the Ramat David Airbase — the Israeli regime’s northernmost such outpost that houses warplanes and gunships, according to Press TV.

The resistance noted that the attack had come “in support of our people in Gaza, and in response to the massacres committed by the usurping entity against Palestinian civilians including children, women, and the elderly.”

The Iraqi forces hit a “vital target” in Ashdod during the second attack, which was similarly conducted using unmanned aerial vehicles.

According to the resistance, the latter attack was part of “the second phase” of its pro-Palestinian operations against the Israeli regime.

The regime began the war on October 7 after Gaza’s resistance groups carried out a retaliatory operation against the usurping entity.

Since the start of the offensive, the Tel Aviv regime has killed around 33,000 Palestinians, most of them women and children.

Iraq’s Islamic Resistance has been conducting numerous operations against targets lying throughout the occupied territories ever since the onset of the warfare.

Earlier on Wednesday, it struck the Haifa Airport in the northwestern part of the territories, asserting that it would continue to “destroy the enemy’s strongholds.”

"Can't Raise Anti-Sanatan Slogans": Gourav Vallabh On Why He Quit Congress

'Can't Raise Anti-Sanatan Slogans': Gourav Vallabh On Why He Quit Congress

Mr Vallabh made his poll debut in 2019 from Jharkhand’s Jamshedpur East.

New Delhi:

Congress spokesperson Gourav Vallabh today quit the party, citing discomfort with its current trajectory. In a post on social media, Mr Vallabh lamented the party’s apparent lack of direction.

“The directionless path the Congress party is currently taking makes me uncomfortable. I cannot support anti-Sanatan slogans nor can I criticise the country’s wealth creators day in and day out. Therefore, I am resigning from all positions and the primary membership of the Congress party,” Mr Vallabh posted on X.

Mr Vallabh shared a two-page resignation letter, which he sent to party president Mallikarjun Kharge.

“I am feeling emotional. My heart is heavy. There’s a lot I wish to express, write, and share. However, my principles forbid me from uttering anything that might cause harm to others. Nevertheless, today, I am presenting my thoughts to you because I firmly believe that concealing the truth is also an offence, and I refuse to be involved in it,” he wrote in the letter.

Mr Vallabh contested the Rajasthan assembly election from Udaipur constituency in 2023. However, the BJP candidate secured a comfortable win with a margin of over 32,000 votes.

Mr Vallabh made his poll debut in 2019 from Jharkhand’s Jamshedpur East, where he bagged over 18,000 and ended up in third spot behind then-sitting chief minister Raghubar Das and Saryu Roy.

He further alleged that the Congress party is moving in the wrong direction, against the ‘basic principle of the party’.

“These days the party is moving in the wrong direction. On one hand, we talk about the caste-based census and on the other hand, the party seems to oppose the entire Hindu society. This style of working gives a misleading message to the public that the party is a supporter of a particular religion only. This is against the basic principles of Congress,” he said.

Mr Vallabh’s resignation comes on the heels of boxer Vijender Singh’s defection to the BJP.

Phil Foden Hits Hat-Trick As Manchester City Crush Aston Villa

Phil Foden shone in the absence of Erling Haaland and Kevin De Bruyne as the England international’s hat-trick handed Manchester City a thumping 4-1 win over Aston Villa on Wednesday. The champions responded emphatically to questions over their ability to win the biggest games to move to within one point of leaders Arsenal at the top of the Premier League. City had not beaten a side in the Premier League’s top five in six attempts this season prior to the visit of fourth-placed Villa to the Etihad.

But Pep Guardiola showed faith in the depth of his squad by leaving Haaland and De Bruyne on the bench for the full 90 minutes ahead of a hectic schedule in their defence of three competitions.

“The schedule is terrible and we have to bring energy. Everybody has to be involved,” said Guardiola on his decision to leave out Haaland and De Bruyne.

Guardiola has hailed Foden as the best player in the English top-flight this season and the 23-year-old backed up his manager’s words by taking his goal tally for the season to 21.

“Phil, when he plays in a central position, he has a sense of goal,” added Guardiola.

“He’s a really top class player — he has a natural talent, a gift.”

City were beaten 1-0 by Villa when the sides met in December, but that was their last defeat as Guardiola’s men are now unbeaten in 24 games.

And Unai Emery conceded the gulf between the sides showed.

“We performed very well in different circumstances (at home to City). Today they showed their power and deserved to win,” said the Villa boss.

Jeremy Doku was one of those to return to the City side among four changes and the Belgian rewarded his manager with his brightest display in a City shirt for months.

Doku was the creator for the opener as he skipped past Lucas Digne and his cross was swept high past Villa’s stand-in goalkeeper Robin Olsen by Rodri.

Villa’s normal number one Emiliano Martinez was just one of a host of key absences for the visitors.

Top scorer Ollie Watkins was sidelined by injury, while captain John McGinn was suspended.

However, Jhon Duran showed he is an able deputy to Watkins as the Colombian swept home a fine equaliser after exchanging a one-two with Morgan Rogers.

City restored their lead just before half-time to calm the rising tension among the Etihad crowd thanks to Foden’s first of the night.

His free-kick sneaked through a hole in the Villa wall caused by Nicolo Zaniolo jumping out of position to leave Olsen unsighted.

City’s number two ‘keeper Stefan Ortega is enjoying a rare run in the side due to Ederson‘s thigh injury.

And the German was needed to make a vital save after the break to deny Villa levelling for a second time through Douglas Luiz.

Foden made the points safe when he swept in Rodri’s pass off the inside of the post.

And he completed his hat-trick in style by blasting into the top corner from outside the box.

Liverpool can retake top spot when they host bottom-of-the-table Sheffield United on Thursday.

But City will be quietly confident of becoming the first side to ever win four consecutive English top-flight titles with the worst of their run-in now cleared.

Guardiola’s men have just one more match against a top-six opponent, away to Tottenham, in their final eight games of the season.

Defeat leaves Villa still just two points above Spurs in the race for a top-four finish, having played a game more.
