'Went Through Hell': The Ordeal Of Former Hamas Hostages In Gaza

Aviva Siegel was with her husband Keith when Hamas fighters burst into their home.

Jerusalem, Undefined:

Nearly six months into the Gaza war, with the families of hostages still held captive by Hamas desperate for their release, many former hostages are finding the words to describe the ordeal of captivity.

“I went through hell,” Aviva Siegel, who spent 51 days in captivity in Gaza, told AFP.

On the morning of October 7, Siegel, in her early sixties with round glasses and dark grey hair, was with her husband Keith when Hamas fighters burst into their home in Kfar Aza kibbutz, kidnapped them and took them to Gaza.

For more than seven weeks, she said, they were dragged from tunnel to tunnel in awful conditions.

“They didn’t let us speak, we weren’t allowed to stand up,” said Siegel, who was freed as part of a short truce deal in November.

Her husband remains in captivity in war-ravaged Gaza.

Around 250 people were kidnapped by Hamas on October 7, during an attack that resulted in the deaths of about 1,170 Israelis and foreigners, the majority civilians, according to an AFP tally of official Israeli figures.

During the November truce, the only one of the war so far, 80 hostages were released in exchange for the return of 240 Palestinians held in Israeli prisons. 25 other hostages, mainly Thai farm workers, were released outside the deal.

Four captives were released by Hamas before the truce, while Israel freed a further three, including two in a military operation in mid-February.

About 130 remain in Gaza, Israel believes, including 34 who are presumed dead.

Sunday will mark six months since their abduction and the start of the war.

Israel launched a retaliatory bombardment and ground invasion of Gaza, aimed at destroying Hamas, which has killed at least 32,975 people, mostly women and children, according to the health ministry in the Hamas-run territory.

More than a third of the freed hostages have spoken publicly about their experiences, either in media interviews, at public events or in videos filmed by the Forum of Hostage Families, an association representing some relatives.

‘Permanent fear’

Many former hostages, while not detailing the conditions of their captivity, have talked of experiencing “hell”.

“Even if I told you what the hostages go through, you wouldn’t be able to imagine what they are experiencing… I have come back from hell,” said Mia Regev, an Israeli freed in November after 51 days as a hostage.

The 21-year-old woman was shot on October 7 at the Nova rave where almost 40 people were abducted.

“After eight days, they removed the bullet from my foot and operated on me. The care was bad and contemptuous, not humane treatment and when I arrived here, in Israel, I had complicated infections,” she said shortly after her release.

Doron Katz-Asher, kidnapped alongside her two daughters Raz, aged four, and Aviv, aged two, was also shot. He said he was treated “without anaesthesia, with a needle and thread”.

In an interview with Israeli TV channel N12, Katz-Asher spoke of “permanent fear”, something almost all hostages who have spoken have mentioned.

“There were ten of us in a 12-square metre room with no beds, just a sink and bottles of water… my daughters had a fever.

Danielle Aloni, freed with her five-year-old daughter, said of her captivity, “We sleep, we cry, nothing happens, every day is an eternity, it’s so frightening”.

Fear of sexual violence was acute for female hostages.

Amit Soussana, 40, another hostage from Kfar Aza, described in a lengthy interview with The New York Times how she was sexually assaulted.

A guard “with the gun pointed at me, forced me to commit a sexual act on him,” she said.

Soussana is the only former captive to have explicitly described sexual violence, although Siegel said of the women in captivity: “They turned these girls into dolls they could use as they pleased.”

‘Forbidden to cry’

“I am a witness, I saw a girl tortured… I would like to go back to protect them, I saw what the girls went through,” Siegel added.

Yarden Roman-Gat, another former hostage told the channel Kan 11, “As a woman, the fear of being raped or subjected to sexual assault is constant, being without any way to defend yourself, resisting means risking your life, that fear never leaves you”.

Her sister-in-law Carmel Gat, 39, is still being held in Gaza alongside 13 other women.

Mothers abducted with their children, such as Hagar Brodetz, who was taken with her three children, aged between four and 10, have the acute horrors of being held captive with their kids.

“It was forbidden to cry or to laugh or to talk loudly… you can’t teach a 4-year-old child to cry silently… everything that you have created to protect your children disappears… the children are hungry, they have one pitta per day, I don’t wish it on any mother to have to beg to give your children something to eat,” said Brodetz.

Liat Atzili, 49, a history teacher at a school which organises guided visits to the Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial, learnt after her release that her husband Aviv was killed on October 7.

“I came back from among the dead,” she told N12. “The lack of food, medicines, the horrible hygienic conditions… every day was endless, it was total despair.”

UK facing pressure over arms sales to Israel after death of WCK aid workers

UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is facing mounting pressure over the country’s arms sales to Israel following the death of seven aid workers of the World Central Kitchen (WCK) in an Israeli strike in the Gaza Strip.

In a letter signed on Wednesday, more than 600 prominent figures, including lawyers, academics and retired senior judges, urged Sunak to end arms sale to Israel as a measure to prevent genocide in Gaza.

They described the present situation in Gaza as “catastrophic,” warning that the UK government is breaching international law by continuing to arm the occupying regime.

“While we welcome the increasingly robust calls by your government for a cessation of fighting and the unobstructed entry to Gaza of humanitarian assistance, simultaneously to continue (to take two striking examples) the sale of weapons and weapons systems to Israel and to maintain threats of suspending UK aid to UNRWA falls significantly short of your government’s obligations under international law,” the signatories wrote.

The 17-page letter further called for the government to work towards a permanent ceasefire and to impose sanctions “upon individuals and entities who have made statements inciting genocide against Palestinians.”

It also stressed that restoring funding to the UN Relief and Works Agency is necessary for “effective entry and distribution of the means of existence to Palestinians in Gaza, and by extension the prevention of genocide.”

The letter further emphasized that the International Court of Justice’s (ICJ) conclusion that there exists a plausible risk of genocide in Gaza has placed London on notice that weapons might be used in its commission and that the suspension of their provision is thus “a ‘means likely to deter’ and/or ‘a measure to prevent’ genocide.”

Meanwhile, Tory MPs have piled pressure on Sunak over the country’s arms sales to Israel, saying the UK should stop exporting arms to Tel Aviv following the strike on the WCK aid convoy.

The Liberal Democrats, Scottish National Party (SNP) and a former UK national security adviser have also called for arms sales to Israel to be suspended.

First Minister Humza Yousaf has also urged an immediate end to arms sales from the UK to Israel in a letter to Sunak.

The Labour Party has not called for a suspension, but is urging the government to publish internal legal advice on whether Israel is in breach of international law.

On Tuesday, Gaza’s Government Media Office said at least seven foreign aid workers of WCK had been killed in an Israeli airstrike in Dayr al-Balah in the central part of the Gaza Strip.

It said the foreigners included citizens of Australia, Britain, and Poland.

The British victims were identified as John Chapman, James Henderson and James Kirby, who were all military veterans.

Speaking to the Sun newspaper, Sunak described the deaths as “an awful tragedy,” saying the UK wanted to see “a dramatic increase in the amount of aid getting into Gaza”.

He also called for an independent investigation into the Israeli strike, but stopped short of saying arms sales should end.

Ghana Priest, 63, Who Married 12-Year-Old Girl Says "Nothing Sexual"

'Nothing Sexual': 63-Year-Old Ghana Priest Defends Marrying 12-Year-Old Girl

The priest married the girl in a huge ceremony on Saturday.

A 63-year-old priest in Ghana, who is facing backlash for marrying a 12-year-old girl, has insisted that the marriage was not about sexual relationship. A spokesperson of the priest said the girl is expected to help the priest with his “spiritual duties”. Nuumo Borketey Laweh Tsuru XXXIII, a spiritual leader in the Nungua area of the capital, Accra, wed the unidentified child in a huge ceremony on Saturday. Mr Tsuru, known as a “Gborbu Wulomo,” or traditional high priest, wields significant spiritual authority in the Nungua indigenous community.

After the widespread controversy, the girl and her mother were placed under police protection and Ghana’s attorney general opened an investigation, as per a report in South China Morning Post (SCMP).

“The allegations, if proven, constitute a criminal offence for which all persons involved must face prosecution,” the outlet quoted the attorney general’s office as saying in a statement.

Under Ghanaian law, the legal minimum age for marriage is 18.

But the priest’s spokesperson defended his action, saying the girl is not expected to fulfil marital duties until she reaches the legal age of consent, which is 16 in Ghana.

“It’s not a marriage ceremony. There is nothing sexual attached to it. The priest has three customary wives already. It’s a customary role to help the priest with his spiritual duties,” spokesperson Mankralo Shwonotalor said, as per the SCMP report.

Images of the wedding ceremony were widely circulated on social media. It showed dozens of community members attended the event. As per the BBC, women who attended the ceremony were heard telling the girl to be prepared for wifely duties and to use perfumes to boost hear appeal to her husband.

The women also advised her to dress teasingly for her husband, according to the outlet.

The photos triggered a public outcry by many Ghanaians who pointed out that the practice was illegal. Critics have also called for the authorities to dissolve the marriage and investigate the priest.

Why Players Flourish After Joining CSK? Sidhu's Million-Dollar Dhoni Reply

Year after year, Chennai Super Kings continue to perform at the highest level of the Indian Premier League, qualifying for playoffs more often than not. CSK might not have the best group of players every season, but they often manage to get the best out of them. Players like Shane Watson, Shivam Dube, Moeen Ali, etc. have done wonders for the Super Kings after failing to create an impact in other IPL franchises. While many have mulled on the positive change in such players, former India cricketer Navjot Singh Sidhu perfectly explained the reason behind this change, giving the due credit to MS Dhoni and CSK.

In a chat on Star Sports, Sidhu came across various questions, ranging from MS Dhoni’s batting position to the role CSK play in uplifting the form of a player.

When asked about the promotion of youngster Sameer Rizvi over MS Dhoni in the finisher’s role, Sidhu said that the franchise was right to put the uncapped Indian player higher in the batting order.

“Talent is nothing without opportunity. You have to give youngsters opportunity. One is giving opportunity and the other thing is the player accepting the challenge. You have got to give Rizvi that confidence,” Sidhu said.

“The same player isn’t that strong in the other team, but when he comes to Dhoni, he becomes a completely different player, how? Because a good leader is the one who walks behind him and ignites faith,” Sidhu further said.

Delving into the depth of Dhoni’s arsenal of talent, Sidhu described how the CSK ‘finisher’ has been working to build another ‘finisher’ for the future.

“A drop of honey catches more flies than a gallon of vinegar. So, therefore, fitting people in their rightful place is what is most important. Dhoni is an asset, when he bats and finishes. Jadeja and Dhoni, one plus one is 11. They are multiplying their strength. Dhoni has nothing to prove. The biggest strength of a leader is that he builds future leaders. He will actually unlock potential for the youngsters.”

“The bigger challenge is not batting at No. 3 or No. 4, the bigger challenge is when you bat for the last six overs, the last 7 overs. That is the time when you are really tested, why? That’s when you are going to be scoring 1 ball, 3 runs. 1 ball, 2 and a half. This skill is in a very few people. I am telling you, it’s not easy to be a finisher. You are not getting accolades, but it’s the quality of those runs, which actually helps the team win or lose,” Sidhu said.
