Majority in US disapprove of Israel's brutality against Palestinians: Poll

A majority of Americans now disapprove of Israel’s genocidal war in the Gaza Strip as the regime has started to lose support from its great benefactor, the United States, a new poll has found.

US-based pollster Gallup says its new survey shows support for Israel’s atrocities in Gaza dropped from 50 percent in November to 36 percent in March.

55 percent of Americans are now against the war, Gallup found.

It said all three major party groups in the US have become less supportive of Israel’s war than they were in November.

Support for the regime’s hostilities in Gaza decreased by 18 percent among the Democrats, while approval among the Republicans has dropped 7 percent, the poll shows.

On March 25, the US abstained from a UN Security Council vote on a resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza during the month of Ramadan.

Washington’s abstention allowed such measures to pass for the first time since Israel started its war on Gaza nearly six months ago.

The administration of President Joe Biden had repeatedly blocked similar bids for ceasefire with its veto power.

Some Democratic believe the president has been too closely aligned with Tel Aviv by not taking stronger action to promote a ceasefire so far.

AIFF Woman Staffer Alleges Harassment By Colleague In Admin Dept: Report

File photo of AIFF logo.© X (formerly Twitter)

A woman employee at the All Indian Football Federation (AIFF) headquarters here has lodged a “verbal” complaint of “harassment” against a male colleague, according to a source in the national body. The woman is, however, yet to press a formal charge. Nonetheless, the Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) of the AIFF met on Tuesday to discuss the matter where she sought time before proceeding any further with her complaint. “She made a verbal complaint and despite she not doing it in writing and not pressing for charges, the ICC escalated the matter and the committee met to discuss the issue. She has sought time to decide on whether to press charges or not,” an AIFF source told PTI.

“At this point in time, we don’t even know what is the nature of charges or harassment. The ICC will submit a report in a few days,” said he added.

In January, the AIFF constituted the Internal Complaints Committee under the provision of Chapter II (4.1) of the Sexual Harassment of Women at Work Place (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act 2013.

The AIFF has been plagued by controversies of late with accusations of corruption against its President Kalyan Chaubey.

Compounding its misery was the national men’s team’s shocking loss to an under-strength Afghanistan in a 2026 World Cup qualifying match on Tuesday in Guwahati.

UN expert: I received threats not to disclose info on Israel’s Gaza genocide

A United Nations human rights expert says she has received threats throughout her mandate of compiling a report about Israel’s genocide in the besieged Gaza Strip.

Francesca Albanese, the Special Rapporteur on the human rights situation in the occupied West Bank and Gaza, said on Wednesday that she had been threatened during the time she was preparing a report on Israel’s acts of genocide in Gaza.

Her report, titled “Anatomy of a Genocide”, was submitted to the UN Human Rights Council on Tuesday. Israel said it “utterly rejects” the report.

When asked whether she received threats during her mandate, Albanese said, “Yes, I do receive threats. Nothing that so far I considered needing extra precautions. Pressure? Yes, and it doesn’t change either my commitment or the results of my work.”

The UN expert, who found Israel committed genocide, did not elaborate on the nature of the threats, nor did she say who had issued them.

“It’s been a difficult time,” Albanese said. “I’ve always been attacked since the very beginning of my mandate.”

She said in her report that Israel violated three of the five acts listed under the international genocide convention, warning that the overwhelming scale of Israel’s attacks on Gaza reveals the regime intends to destroy Palestinians as a group physically.

According to Albanese, Israel’s executive and military leadership and soldiers have intentionally “subverted their protection functions in an attempt to legitimize genocidal violence against the Palestinian people.”

“The only reasonable inference that can be drawn from the unveiling of this policy is” a policy issued from Tel Aviv aiming at “genocidal violence toward the Palestinian people in Gaza,” she said.

On Monday, Albanese’s seminal report, which has already infuriated Israel, was leaked to the public by a pro-Israeli group.

In late December, South Africa filed a lawsuit against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) that the occupying regime has failed to uphold its commitments under the 1948 Genocide Convention.

Pretoria argued that Tel Aviv’s actions in Gaza since the onset of the brutal campaign have been genocidal in character because they are intended to bring about the destruction of a substantial part of the Palestinian national, racial and ethnical group.

In its interim ruling on January 26, the top UN court ruled that South Africa’s claims are plausible, ordering provisional measures. The Hague-based court also said the Israeli regime must implement steps to prevent genocidal acts and allow humanitarian aid flow into Gaza.

Israel Asks US To Reschedule Scrapped Meeting On Rafah Offensive Plans

Israel Asks US To Reschedule Scrapped Meeting On Rafah Offensive Plans

Israel’s military campaign has killed more than 32,000 people (File)

Jerusalem:

Israel wants to reschedule talks in Washington to discuss a possible offensive in the Gaza city of Rafah, days after it canceled the trip in protest at a UN ceasefire resolution, a US official said Wednesday.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu angrily scrapped the visit on Monday after Israel’s closest ally, the United States, abstained on the UN Security Council vote, allowing it to pass and deepening talk of a rift with President Joe Biden.

But after the White House said it was “perplexed” by the move, Israel backtracked.

“The prime minister’s office has said they’d like to reschedule the meeting dedicated to Rafah. We are now working with them to set a convenient date,” the senior administration official told AFP, speaking on condition of anonymity.

The U-turn came after Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant had “constructive discussions” over the last two days with senior US officials in Washington, the official added.

“Rafah was one of the many topics discussed” in the talks with Secretary of State Antony Blinken, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, CIA chief Bill Burns and National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan.

Last week, Netanyahu agreed to a personal request by Biden to send a team to Washington to hear US concerns and discuss ways to target Hamas without a major ground operation in Rafah, which is crowded with refugees.

But after the UN Security Council vote demanding an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza war, Israel said that it was canceling and that the US abstention “hurts” its war effort and its bid to free hostages.

The White House said on Monday it was “kind of perplexed” and “very disappointed” by the cancelation.

The United States also insisted its abstention did not represent a shift in policy on Israel.

But Biden has voiced increasing frustration with Netanyahu as the civilian death count in the Gaza Strip mounts and the humanitarian situation for Palestinians becomes increasingly dire.

The US president was caught on a hot mic recently saying he needed to have a “come to Jesus meeting” with the Israeli premier over the situation.

Israel launched a relentless offensive on Gaza after an unprecedented attack by the Palestinian group Hamas resulted in the deaths of about 1,160 people, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally of Israeli figures.

Around 130 people are still believed to be held hostage in Gaza following the attack.

Israel’s military campaign has killed more than 32,000 people, mostly women and children, according to the health ministry in the Hamas-run territory.

Delhi Court Allows Early Hearing On Bail Petition Of Manish Sisodia

Delhi Court Allows Early Hearing On Bail Petition Of Manish Sisodia

The application had sought a hearing to be fixed for April 1, 2024. (File)

A Delhi court on Wednesday preponed the hearing on the bail plea of former Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia in CBI and ED cases related to the Delhi Excise Policy case.

The Special Judge, Kaveri Baweja of the Rouse Avenue Court, after going through the submissions, decided to fix the matter for April 2, 2024. Earlier, the bail hearing was listed for April 4.

The court deferred the hearing on the bail application twice. Yesterday, it was adjourned for April 4.

Manish Sisodia has filed an application seeking a preponement of the date of his bail hearing. The application had sought a hearing to be fixed for April 1, 2024.

Earlier, the Special Judge, MK Nagpal, was hearing the plea. However, he was transferred to Tis Hazari Court on March 19. He had started hearing the plea after the curative petition of Manish Sisodia was dismissed by the Supreme Court.

On March 18, CBI opposed the bail plea and said that some high-profile people may be arrested. The investigation is going on and this accused may hamper it.

Senior advocate Mohit Mathur began by stating that the Supreme Court (SC) has observed that 13 months have passed and granted bail to Benoy Babu.

The senior advocate had also said “I (Manish Sisodia) satisfy the triple test. He is not at flight risk. There is no chance of tampering with evidence. There is no evidence left now. All have become approvers.”

He further submitted that, besides, the fact is that there is no loss to the exchequer but profit to the exchequer. No loss to even any private person or any consumer. No money was paid by him and vice versa, Mathur said.

He also argued that the main charge sheet and charge sheets have been filed. No development in terms of trial, or snail pace. There are 400-plus witnesses, and the trial has not commenced.

On the other hand, the bail plea was opposed by Assistant Public Prosecutor (APP) Pankaj Gupta. He argued that there was no delay from our side. The trial starts after the arguments on charge. We’re trying to start that. The accused are delaying the trial.

The CBI APP submitted that some high-profile people may be arrested. The investigation is ongoing and this accused may influence the witnesses and hamper the investigation.

The application should be dismissed, Pankaj Gupta submitted.

A 23-year-old man was found dead outside his friend’s house in Delhi’s Maidan Garhi area with cops suspecting that he jumped from the terrace, police said on Wednesday.

His family alleged criminal angle in the incident, they said.

According to police, Pankaj Singh Negi, a resident of Chirag Delhi, went to meet his friend on Monday in an inebriated state and a heated argument broke out between them.

“Following an argument, Negi left her house and went to the terrace of the building,” police said.

Later, he was found unconscious outside the building, police said.

“A PCR call was received on March 25 at 10 pm regarding a person lying unconscious in Rajpur Khurd extension in Maidan Garhi area,” another police officer said.

A police team was immediately rushed to the spot who took Negi to hospital. Doctors declared him brought dead.

Police said prima facie, it appeared that Negi who worked at a bar in Greater Kailash Part II had jumped from the terrace.

However, the victim’s family has alleged criminal angle in the matter, police said, adding that a probe on the matter is underway.

SC declines to pass interim order staying Citizenship Amendment Rules

The Bench refused to pass any direction subjecting grant of citizenship under the impugned law to the outcome of the petitions challenging the validity of CAA.

SC declines to pass interim order staying Citizenship Amendment Rules

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Tuesday declined to pass any interim order staying the implementation of the rules notified by the Union Home Ministry under the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).

Emphasising that the Union government must be given a reasonable time to respond to the interlocutory applications challenging the introduction of 2024 Citizenship Amendment Rules, a Bench headed by Chief Justice of India, DY Chandrachud, posted the matter for further hearing on April 9.

The Bench, also comprising Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, refused to pass any direction subjecting grant of citizenship under the impugned law to the outcome of the petitions challenging the validity of CAA.

On Friday, the top court had agreed to urgently list the pleas seeking a stay on implementation of Citizenship Amendment Rules, 2024.

In its application, the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) stated the rules notified under CAA were manifestly arbitrary and created an unfair advantage in favour of a class of persons on the ground solely of their religious identity, which is impermissible under Articles 14 and 15 of the Constitution.

It added that around 250 petitions challenging the provisions of the CAA were pending before the Supreme Court and in case the CAA is held to be unconstitutional, an “anomalous situation” would arise when people who would have got citizenship under the impugned Act and Rules would have to be stripped of their citizenship.

“Therefore, it is in the best interest of every person to defer the implementation of the CAA and impugned rules till this Hon’ble Court finally decides the matter.” The Petitioner had pressed for a stay of the implementation of the provisions of the impugned Act.

“However, the Union of India had told this Hon’ble Court that the rules have not been framed and therefore the implementation will not take place. The Writ Petition has been pending for the last 4.5 years,” the application said.

The CAA 2019 grants citizenship to non-Muslim migrants who had come from Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan on or before December 31, 2014.
