2 Beaten To Death After Citizenship Act Protest In Meghalaya

According to reports, the situation is tense after two persons killed in East Khasi Hills district.

Two persons were allegedly beaten to death by miscreants at Ichamati under Shella police station in East Khasi Hills district on Wednesday evening.

The incident took place after the anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) rally organized by the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) along with other NGOs at Ichamati, police sources informed.

Some criminal elements may have taken advantage of the situation and murdered the two persons, who belonged to non-indigenous communities, they said.

East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner SC Sadhu confirmed the death of two persons and added that the details are awaited.

Sources informed that the situation is tense and reinforcements are being sent.

All Superintendents of Police are instructed to be alert and intensify foot/mobile patrolling in their respective jurisdiction.

They have also been asked to organize peace meetings tomorrow.

District police chief Rituraj Ravi said the two dead bodies of L Esan Sing and L Sujit Dutta were found at Ichamati and Dalda respectively.

“Inquest and post mortem are yet to be done. Teams from local PS and additional teams from Shillong are at site. Further details to be shared,” he said.

Baltimore Bridge Collapse: 2 Bodies Recovered From Water As Search Work Continues

Baltimore Bridge Collapse: 2 Bodies Recovered From Water As Search Work Continues

Workers continue to investigate and search for victims after the cargo ship collided with the bridge.

Maryland:

The bodies of two construction workers were found in the cold waters of Baltimore harbor Wednesday, trapped in their red pick-up truck after a giant cargo ship slammed into the bridge they had been filling potholes on, causing a thunderous collapse.

Maryland police announced the grim discovery at a press conference, adding that sonar shows what they believe are more vehicles trapped within the concrete and twisted steel debris of the Francis Scott Key Bridge.

Six of the eight-man construction crew are believed to have been killed, with four bodies yet to be found.

Warning that it was not safe for divers to try to penetrate the wreckage, police told a press conference that they were shifting to a salvage operation, removing the superstructure and then sending divers back in to recover the rest of the bodies.

“Based on sonar scans, we firmly believe that the vehicles are encased in the superstructure and concrete that we tragically saw come down,” Colonel Roland Butler, the superintendent of Maryland’s state police, told a press conference.

The container ship Dali, about 1,000 feet (300 meters) long, and piled high with cargo, was leaving the busy port at 1:30 am Tuesday en route to Asia when power failed and the vessel crashed straight into a support column.

Nearly the entire steel structure — crossed by tens of thousands of motorists each day — collapsed within seconds, cascading over the bow of the ship, blocking one of the busiest US trading ports.

The ship issued a Mayday call in the moments before the collision, prompting police to rush to stop traffic on the bridge — likely saving lives.

But there was no chance to evacuate the eight workers filling potholes on the road directly above the oncoming ship.

Butler named the two victims found Wednesday as Alejandro Hernandez Fuentes, a 35-year-old who had lived in Baltimore but was originally from Mexico, and his 26-year-old colleague Dorlian Ronial Castillo Cabrera, who lived in the suburb of Dundalk but came from Guatemala.

They were found in 25 feet of water, he said.

Two others were pulled from the water alive in the moments after the collapse early Tuesday. One was uninjured, while the second was released from hospital Wednesday, Butler said.

Four more workers are presumed dead, vanished into the swirling currents and crumpled tangle of wrecked girders and pylons.

– ‘Hard-working’ men –

The vessel, which remained entangled in the debris Wednesday, was “stable,” Coast Guard Vice Admiral Peter Gautier told reporters at the White House, adding that the mostly Indian crew remained on board and were “very much engaged” in the investigation.

The National Transportation Safety Board, a federal authority, said that the ship’s data record, or black box, had been recovered so that investigators can understand what went wrong.

Gautier insisted the ship did not present an environmental danger, despite the billion and a half gallons of oil and few dozen hazardous material cargo containers on board. Two other containers — of the total 4,700 — were lost overboard, he said.

Officials said the missing workers were from El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Mexico.

“They are all hard-working, humble men,” said Jesus Campos, a colleague of the eight workers, all employed by contractor Brawner Builders.

One of those now presumed dead was father-of-three Miguel Luna, according to the nonprofit Casa, which serves immigrant communities.

Luna, from El Salvador, had left for work at 6:30 pm on Monday and never returned, Casa said.

His wife, Maria del Carmen Castellon, told Telemundo 44 that she was “devastated” by the wait for any information.

“My heart hurts with this situation,” said Campos.

–  Busy harbor blocked  –

Footage of the collision showed the vessel slamming into one of the 47-year-old bridge’s supports.

The ship had passed two overseas inspections in 2023, the maritime authority for Singapore, where the ship is flagged, said Wednesday, adding that a fault monitor gauge was fixed in June.

The Port of Baltimore is the ninth-busiest major US port in terms of both foreign cargo handled and foreign cargo value, and is directly responsible for more than 15,000 jobs, supporting almost 140,000 more.

The effect on supply chains “clearly will not be trivial,” US Transport Secretary Pete Buttigieg said, adding it was “too soon” to know when the port might reopen.

“Rebuilding will not be quick, or easy, or cheap,” he cautioned.

Nepotism, Dynastic Politics: Kangana Ranaut On Why She "Despises" Congress

Nepotism, Dynastic Politics: Kangana Ranaut On Why She 'Despises' Congress

She said the opposition party represents something she has long fought against

New Delhi:

Asserting that she has a “glorious right-wing personality”, Kangana Ranaut on Wednesday accused the Congress of supporting nepotism and specifically targeted its leaders Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi.

The actor, fielded by the BJP for the Mandi constituency in Himachal Pradesh in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls, also said the Congress has “always been an appalling party for me”.

She said the opposition party represents something she has long fought against in her film career.

“The Congress has always been an appalling party for me. The nepotism in the party has been hugely problematic for me because I was a target of the same system in my (film) industry. I had condemned it openly, I fought against it. Something that was exploiting me… Nepotism, groupism, dynastic politics… I despise this party,” Ms Ranaut said at the Times Now Summit 2024 – India Unstoppable event here.

“Nepo kids,” the “Queen” star said when she was asked to describe the Gandhi siblings in one line.

“They are weird as if they have landed from Mars,” she added.

Ms Ranaut, 37, said she has open-heartedly supported the BJP.

“Regardless of whether I’m a party member or not, I have always fought for the party’s cause. I have left no stone unturned. I always felt that my natural alignment and ideology is with a nationalistic government. I have a glorious right-wing personality,” said the four-time National Award winner.

Days after Ms Ranaut was named the BJP candidate from Mandi, the Congress kicked up a proverbial storm after derogatory comments about the actor and her constituency were posted on the social media handles of its leaders Supriya Shrinate and H S Ahir.

In her defence, Shrinate on Monday said many people have access to her Facebook and Instagram accounts and one of them made the inappropriate post. She also said she had deleted the post and will take action against a parody account that is using her name.

The actor, who had publicly called out Shrinate for posts shared via her social media handles, said she was hurt by the opposition leader’s remarks.

“This (incident) sets the cause of women back by many years. She has posted a very alarming content,” she added.

Shrinate had also hurt the people of Himachal Pradesh by comparing Mandi, a ‘devbhoomi’, to a market, Ms Ranaut further said.

“The meaning of Mandi is not what runs in the head of the Congress. The innocent people of Himachal Pradesh were deeply hurt when they branded it as if it was a flesh trade market. Mandi was named after sage Mandav,” she said.

Asked if she had a message for Shrinate, Ms Ranaut said she has nothing to say to the Congress spokesperson.

Ms Ranaut also said it’s ironic how Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who joined politics with the India Against Corruption campaign, is currently in jail on corruption charges.

Asked about her political debut, she said she is “anxious”.

“It’s a complete lifestyle change. It’s nerve-wracking. It’s a new role… I will be a horse with blinkers on. Suddenly this world has opened up. I want to do it well. I want to be more involved with the real world as opposed to being consumed by the field of arts,” Ms Ranaut added.

Newly-married woman found hanging, family burns in-laws alive in house

Prayagraj: In a shocking incident, soon after a newly-married woman was found hanging in her in-laws’ house in Mutthiganj area of Prayagraj on Monday night, the family of the deceased reached there and allegedly set the house on fire, in which her father-in-law and mother-in-law were burnt alive.

All three bodies have been sent for post-mortem and heavy police deployment has been done in the area to ensure peace.

According to reports, the incident took place late on Monday night when the body of Anshika Kesarwani was found hanging in her house.

Anshika had recently got married to Anshu, a businessman from Mutthiganj.

As soon as Anshika’s family got the news of her death, a large number of people reached her in-laws’ house and a fierce fight broke out between her in-laws and her maternal family.

The woman’s family accused her in-laws of murdering their daughter and alleged dowry harassment.

Reports said that Anshika’s family members locked her in-laws inside their house and set it on fire. Her father-in-law and mother-in-law died in the blaze.

Prayagraj DCP (City), Deepak Bhukar, said that the police received a call late on Monday night that a woman named Anshika Kesarwani had committed suicide. “Both, parents and in-laws were present there. When the police team reached the spot, the parents of the woman and her in-laws were fighting among themselves. Suddenly the house was set on fire,” he said.

The police took immediate action, informed the fire brigade and rescued five people.

After the fire was put out, the dead bodies of Rajendra Kesarwani and Shobha Devi were found in the house.

Russia says Ukraine’s military intelligence chief ‘legitimate target’

The Russian Security Service (FSB) says Ukraine’s military intelligence chief Kirill Budanov and any other high-ranking Ukrainian intelligence official committing crimes against Russia should be considered a valid target for Russian troops.

“Those committing crimes against Russia and Russian citizens are a legitimate target,” Alexander Bortnikov, the FSB head, said at a press conference on Tuesday.

When asked by reporters why Russia has not yet acted on those targets, the FSB said this possibility “is still ahead.”

Bortnikov said Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) should also be designated a terrorist organization.

The remarks came a day after Vasily Malyuk, who heads the SBU, said his agency was behind several high-profile assassinations inside Russia.

A Moscow Court also issued an arrest warrant for Malyuk on Tuesday. The top Ukrainian security official stands accused of masterminding an attack on the Crimean Bridge connecting Russia and the Crimean Peninsula in October 2022.

Malyuk claimed responsibility for the incident in August 2023, saying he had “personally” planned the operation.

The FSB initially identified Budanov as the mastermind of the attack on the Crimean Bridge. The attack set fire to seven oil tankers, sparking a massive blaze and killing three people.

Crimea has repeatedly been targeted by Ukrainian drone attacks since Moscow launched its military operation in February 2022.

Russia launched the campaign in part to counter NATO’s further eastward expansion and to stop Kiev’s persecution of the pro-Russian population in eastern Ukraine.

Moscow accuses Ukraine of attacks against targets inside Russia. Kiev has never officially taken responsibility for those attacks.

The Kremlin says the West and NATO are playing a direct role in the Ukraine conflict by pouring advanced weapons and military equipment into the country, warning that NATO weapons are “legitimate targets” for its armed forces.

"Were Expecting To Chase 190 To 200": GT Skipper Gill After Loss To CSK

Shubman Gill during IPL 2024 match vs CSK.© BCCI

Gujarat Titans skipper Shubman Gill hailed the performance from the Chennai Super Kings and acknowledged that they got “outplayed” at Chepauk and let themselves down with their batting following their 63-run defeat in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. Ruturaj Gaiwkad’s captaincy reign saw CSK win their second consecutive game as they pulled off a near flawless performance against GT on a surface that is known to be a bit unpredictable. The young opening batter Rachin Ravindra got CSK to a robust start, while Shivam Dube provided the much-needed firepower through the middle overs and in the final four to power CSK to a massive total.

While defending the total, each bowler chipped in with their precise line and length to fend off GT from chasing the total.

After the game, Gill conceded that they were outplayed by CSK’s batting performance and lauded their execution with the ball.

“They outplayed us when they were batting and when they bowled, their execution was spot on. We backed ourselves to get a good powerplay score but once we couldn’t, we were always playing catch up,” Gill said after the match.

“In T20, you can always talk about 10-15 runs here and there but eventually it is about how much they got. We were expecting to chase anything between 190 to 200 but we can talk about how we could’ve stopped a few more boundaries. Rather have games like these at the start of the tournament. We let ourselves down while batting,” he added.

The 63-run defeat marked GT’s biggest loss in terms of runs. After putting CSK to bat, an explosive batting performance saw the hosts set a record chase for GT as they posted 206/6 on the board.

In reply, GT struggled to get off to a start as they struggled to muster up runs through the middle phase as the required rate kept rising. CSK kept GT batters at bay and clinched a 63-run win.

Nikolai Farafonov, 35, was found guilty of “public incitement to commit terrorist acts by court.

Warsaw:

A Russian court on Wednesday sentenced a man to six years in jail for online messages denouncing Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, as Moscow clamps down on public criticism of the conflict.

Nikolai Farafonov, 35, was found guilty of “public incitement to commit terrorist acts” by a military court in Russia’s northern Komi region, local media reported.

The prosecution said he had published “videos and messages” calling for the burning of military recruitment offices.

Several dozen arson attacks or attempted attacks on such premises have been reported in Russia since the war began two years ago.

The NGO Memorial, which referred to Farafonov as a political prisoner, said he lived in a small town in the region and ran a channel on the Telegram messaging service openly hostile to the conflict.

On the channel, Memorial said he referred in particular to Russian soldiers being killed in Ukraine, while criticising political repression, “patriotic” pro-Kremlin education in schools and other local issues.

Farafonov had previously been fined in October 2022 for “discrediting” the army following an online commentary which Memorial said referred to the deaths of Ukrainian children at the point of Russian bayonets.

Despite the fine Farafonov continued to publish critical messages until he was arrested last September for “calls for terrorism.”

Thousands of Russians have been fined and hundreds jailed for denouncing President Vladimir Putin’s attack on neighbouring Ukraine, which was launched in February 2022.
