'Hypocrisy': Congress On PM's Post After Lawyers' Letter To Chief Justice

Instead of giving MSP, PM has given a legal guarantee to corruption, he alleged (File)

New Delhi:

The Congress on Thursday hit back at Prime Minister Narendra Modi after his criticism of the party over a lawyers’ letter to the chief justice of India against a “vested interest group”, saying the PM’s brazenness in orchestrating an attack on the judiciary, in the name of defending it, is the “height of hypocrisy”.

Earlier in the day, PM Modi said it is a “vintage Congress culture” to browbeat and bully others, remarks that came in reaction to more than 600 lawyers writing to the Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud, alleging that a “vested interest group” is trying to put pressure on the judiciary and defame courts.

Hitting back at the prime minister, Congress general secretary in-charge, communications, Jairam Ramesh said in a post on X, “The PM’s brazenness in orchestrating and coordinating an attack on the judiciary, in the name of defending the judiciary, is the height of hypocrisy!” “The Supreme Court has delivered body blows to him in recent weeks. The Electoral Bonds Scheme is but one example. The Supreme Court declared them to be unconstitutional — and it is now proved beyond doubt that they were a blatant instrument of fear, blackmail, and intimidation to force companies to donate to the BJP,” he said.

Instead of giving a legal guarantee of minimum support price (MSP), the prime minister has given a legal guarantee to corruption, he alleged.

“All that the Prime Minister has done in the last ten years is divide, distort, divert, and defame. 140 crore Indians are waiting to give him a befitting reply very soon,” Mr Ramesh said.

More than 600 lawyers, including senior advocate Harish Salve and Bar Council chairperson Manan Kumar Mishra, wrote to Chandrachud, alleging that a “vested interest group” is trying to put pressure on the judiciary and defame courts, especially in cases of corruption involving politicians.

In a post on X, PM Modi said, “To browbeat and bully others is vintage Congress culture. 5 decades ago itself they had called for a “committed judiciary” – they shamelessly want commitment from others for their selfish interests but desist from any commitment towards the nation.”

Taylor Swift Makes Billionaire Debut, Joining Elon Musk In Richest List

Taylor Swift Makes Billionaire Debut, Joining Elon Musk In Richest List

The wealth calculations are accurate up to January 15 of the current year.

Joining the ranks of the world’s wealthiest individuals is Taylor Swift, who has entered her billionaire “era.” Elon Musk, propelled by the surge in Tesla stock and SpaceX’s valuation, has reclaimed his position as the world’s richest person in the annual ranking of billionaires, as per Barrons

With a fortune of $231 billion, Musk surpassed Amazon executive chairman Jeff Bezos ($185 billion) and LVMH CEO Bernard Arnault ($175 billion), who held the second and third positions respectively in the 13th Hurun Global Rich Report, an annual survey conducted by China-based media and research firm Hurun. This marks Musk’s third time in four years at the top of the list.

Swift made her appearance on the list with an estimated wealth of $1.2 billion, driven by her Eras Tour and earnings from re-recording her albums.

Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta Platforms Inc., held the fourth position with a wealth of US$158 billion. However, according to the report, Zuckerberg experienced the most significant wealth growth among all individuals on the list, as Meta shares more than doubled.

Ryan Breslow, a 30-year-old entrepreneur based in Miami and chairman of fintech platform Bolt, entered the billionaire list this year with a wealth of US$1.3 billion, making him the youngest self-made billionaire on the list. Despite the average age of billionaires being 66, there are 93 billionaires aged 40 or younger.

The list now includes 3,279 billionaires, up from 3,112 the previous year. Hurun reported a 5% increase in the number of billionaires and a 9% increase in their total wealth. These billionaires represent 2,435 companies and hail from 73 different countries.

The wealth calculations are accurate up to January 15 of the current year.

According to the report, it’s the first instance where over half of the newly accumulated wealth on the list was attributed to the surge in AI technology.

“AI has been the major driver for wealth growth,” Rupert Hoogewerf, Hurun’s chairman and chief researcher, said in a statement. “Whilst [Nvidia president] Jensen Huang has grabbed many of the headlines as Nvidia broke through the US$2 trillion mark and catapulted him into the Hurun Top 30 as a result, the billionaires behind Microsoft, Google, Amazon, Oracle and Meta have seen significant surges in their wealth as investors bet on the value generated by AI.”

Despite a reduction of 155 billionaires, China retains its leading position with 814 individuals, as reported. The United States saw an increase of 109 billionaires, bringing its total to 800. India registered an addition of 84 billionaires, nearly doubling the count compared to the United Kingdom, according to the report.

Maoist ACM and a courier arrested by police in Kothagudem

Kothagudem: Security personnel have arrested a Maoist area committee member (ACM), who carries a cash reward of Rs 5 lakh on his head and courier in the district.

Congress dumps Udaipur Declaration before polls, yet again

Chennur MLA G Vivek was offered a ticket to contest the Assembly elections and so was his brother Bellampally MLA G Vinod.

Congress dumps Udaipur Declaration before polls, yet again

Hyderabad: The Udaipur Declaration of the Congress stresses on ensuring “One Family, One Ticket”, “One person, One post” and that turncoats should not be given prominence among other principles. However, when it comes to issuing tickets for elections and filling up positions, the Declaration, just like what happened before the Assembly elections, appears to have been dumped, triggering sharp criticism from leaders within the party.

Chennur MLA G Vivek was offered a ticket to contest the Assembly elections and so was his brother Bellampally MLA G Vinod. Now, the Congress party high command has issued the Peddapally Lok Sabha constituency ticket to Vivek’s son G Vamshikrishna, much to the dismay of several other local aspirants.

It was just three months ago that Vivek’s family joined the Congress.

“One family was offered three tickets and loyal leaders like me, who have been working for the party for 30 years, are being betrayed. Is this justifiable?” asked former Youth Congress national secretary and Peddapally ticket aspirant V Varaprasad.

“Our self respect is lost and this is humiliation. Despite Industries Minister D Sridhar Babu recommending my name, the party leadership is not considering my candidature. In protest, on April 5, I will take up a deeksha at Peddapally headquarters,” Varaprasad said.

This was not an isolated case. Recently, BJP leader and former MP AP Jithender Reddy joined the Congress. He was offered two posts, including Special Representative in New Delhi and Advisor to Government (Sports Affairs).

A few have even approached the court seeking disqualification of turncoats. Soon after Khairatabad MLA Danam Nagender, who won the elections representing the BRS, joined the Congressm, he was offered the Secunderabad Lok Sabha ticket.

Congress leader Raju Yadav demanded that Danam Nagender should resign as MLA and then contest the Lok Sabha elections. Since he shifted loyalties, he should be disqualified and a representation to this effect was submitted to Speaker G Prasad Kumar, however, there was no action, he alleged.

“As the Speaker failed to initiate action, a petition has been filed in the High Court,” the former corporator said.

Similarly, T Jeevan Reddy, who had contested the Assembly elections from Jagtial constituency, had lost to BRS candidate Sanjay Kumar. Despite, there being a rule in the Congress party that candidates who lose elections should not be given an opportunity to contest other elections, the AICC picked him as Nizamabad Lok Sabha candidate.

Interestingly, when former MLA Sampath Kumar had sought the Nagarkurnool Lok Sabha ticket, the party leadership had pointed out that he lost the Assembly elections from Alampur.

Telangana: Double tragedy hits groom’s family with four deaths including suicide

Medak: In a tragic incident that left the entire Bacharam village in shock, relatives performed final rites for four persons the same day. The four persons were to attend the marriage rituals of Songa Ramesh on Thursday, were they alive.

While three of them died in an accident on Wednesday, forcing relatives to put off the wedding, Ramesh’s grandfather could not take the shock and died, allegedly by hanging himself.

Things were entirely different on Wednesday, when the entire village, where most residents were close relatives and were preparing to celebrate the wedding on Thursday morning.

Women from Bacharam had boarded a trolley-tractor to visit the bride Mamtha’s residence to accompany her back to Bacharam to perform the marriage ritual. However, tragedy struck the marriage party as the tractor turned turtle at Masanpally in Andole mandal of Sangareddy, leaving all 33 on the board seriously injured. Three of them – Agamma (42), Budhemma (52) and Jittegari Sangamma (45) – died while undergoing treatment at the Area Hospital Jogipet hours later. The 30 persons who were injured were undergoing treatment in different hospitals.

With most of the relatives in hospital and the final rites of the deceased to be performed on Thursday, the family decided to call off the wedding. However, Ramesh’s grandfather Songa Pentaiah was then found hanging even as others were making arrangements for the funeral of the three women. Villagers said Pentaiah was in shock ever since he came to know about the accident.

On Thursday, the villagers collectively performed the funeral of all the four persons.

Meanwhile, the condition of at least four of the injured persons was stated to be critical. Former Medak MLA P Padma Devendar Reddy visited the village and consoled the bereaved family members.

Macron ‘a danger’ to Europe

At a Pan Western meeting of nationalist parties, Deputy Prime Minister of Italy Matteo Salvini called French President Emmanuel Macron “a danger” to Europe for his refusal to rule out the possibility of sending troops to Ukraine.

“I think that President Macron, with his words, represents a danger for our country and our continent.”

Matteo Salvini, Deputy Prime Minister of Italy

Salvini added, “I don’t want to leave our children a continent ready to enter World War III”, as backlash against the Western-led war continues to grow in Europe.

Some believe that Macron is using Russophobia as a way to bring together a European Union which is increasingly being split by demands for more national sovereignty.

The idea that Russia is a threat and that that’s what’s going to make Europe exist, I think, is an illusion.

People aren’t buying it. As a matter of fact, people understand whether it is in Germany or whether it be in France, that in fact, this war in Ukraine, which was unnecessary, and which was wanted by the West and by NATO, is actually hurting them very badly.

You know, inflation, the increase in oil prices and energy and gasoline and food, you name it. The Europeans are realizing that they’re suffering from this war.

Within two years, Macron has gone from major criticism over urging the West not to humiliate Russia, to being one of Europe’s leading War Hawks.

Recent public opinion polls in France, however, show a different trend. Studies show that nearly 80% of the French do not want their soldiers sent to Ukraine.

Macron’s sustained belligerence has been met with major resistance, if not rejection, in all quarters, extending from Washington to the highest ranks of the French armed forces.

There are leaked reports that the generals are extremely worried about Macron making these belligerent comments when France is in no condition whatsoever to defy or to challenge Russia.

I mean, even the British; Sunak, for example, saying he’s got to send troops to Ukraine, what troops?

The British can’t fill a football stadium with their army, the army that they could put in the field; they couldn’t even fill a football stadium. So what is he talking about?

You know, so this is all a lot of bluster, but extremely dangerous bluster, extremely dangerous.

Socrates Kazolias, Journalist and Political Analyst

A newly released report shows how little France has been affected by the Ukrainian refugee crisis, which may make Paris more open to more war.

A mere 60,000 refugees have been accepted by France, which is fewer than Ireland.

France hosts just one Ukrainian refugee per 1,000 residents, whereas Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Bulgaria are currently host to more than 25 refugees per 1,000 citizens.

Ambiguity over TDP’s support to BJP in Khammam LS polls

While BJP leaders assert TDP support in the Khammam Lok Sabha polls, TDP senior leaders maintain that the party high command has yet to make a decision on the matter.

Ambiguity over TDP’s support to BJP in Khammam LS polls

While BJP leaders assert TDP support in the Khammam Lok Sabha polls, TDP senior leaders maintain that the party high command has yet to make a decision on the matter.

Khammam: Even as BJP leaders here claim that they have support of the Telugu Desam Party in the Khammam Lok Sabha polls, senior leaders of the TDP insist that the party high command has not taken any decision on the issue.

It might be noted that the BJP candidate Vinod Rao, along with district president G Satyanarayana and others, visited the TDP district office here on Wednesday. They interacted with TDP district secretary Ketineni Harish and others seeking the party’s support in parliament elections.

A statement was released saying the TDP had extended support to Vinod Rao. It was said that the leaders of both the parties decided to work together for the victory of Rao in the election as the two parties were the partners of the NDA alliance. However, senior TDP leaders now differ with the statement saying that supporting the BJP candidate in the election would solely depend on the directions of the party high command and not on the district committee’s decision.

Speaking to Telangana Today, TDP State vice president Vasireddy Ramanadham stated that just because BJP and TDP have an alliance in Andhra Pradesh, the same would not be applicable to Telangana. He cited news reports wherein BJP State president G Kishan Reddy said there was no need of an alliance with TDP in Telangana.

He further noted that the request for TDP’s support had to be made through proper channel. The State committee and the party’s chief N Chandra Babu Naidu have the authority to decide the matter and not the district committee, he said, adding that there was no communication from the party’s high command regarding the issue so far. The issue of supporting BJP in Lok Sabha polls in Khammam has already been taken to the notice of the high command.

TDP State general secretary Kurapati Venkateshwarlu stated that a BJP leader telephoned him with regard to the party’s support in Khammam Lok Sabha election and he was told to approach the State committee. He expressed surprise how BJP leaders could visit the TDP office without following proper protocol and claim that the TDP has extended support in the election. Instead of visiting the district office, the BJP leaders should have approached the TDP State committee, he said.

Nothing seems to be going in Mumbai Indians (MI) captain Hardik Pandya‘s favour as the franchise suffered their second defeat in as many games of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 match on Wednesday. After a narrow defeat to Gujarat Titans (GT) in their season opener, MI were comprehensively beaten at the expense of SRH, with the hosts registering the biggest-ever team total in the history of the IPL. SRH posted 277-3 to beat MI by 31 runs in a six-hitting festival at the Uppal Stadium. While Hardik has been under the scanner for his captaincy, a video has emerged on social media, claiming that bowling coach Lasith Malinga ignored the MI captain, who went on to sit beside an agitated Kieron Pollard.

The video was shared by several users on social media platform on X.

SRH opener Travis Head (62 off 24) and number three Abhishek Sharma (63 off 23) came up with a sensational display of power-hitting that saw the latter snatching the franchise record for the fastest fifty from the Australian within minutes.

Heinrich Klaasen (80 not out off 34 balls) provided the fireworks in the end to help SRH break an 11-year-old record. The previous highest total in IPL was 263 for five achieved by Royal Challengers Bangalore back in 2013. It was also the highest total recorded in a T20 league.

Mumbai bowlers were left shell-shocked by SRH’s six-hitting spree but their batters came out with a purpose and made a match out of what looked like a one way traffic at the innings break.

Eventually, they ended at 246 for five in 20 overs.

A record 38 sixes were plundered in the game and it was the first time 500 runs were scored in a T20 match.

“The wicket was good but 277, no matter how good or bad you bowl, if the opposition get 277 that means they batted very well. It was tough out there for bowlers. Close to 500 runs were scored so the wicket was helping the batters,” Hardik said after the match.
