UK Greenhouse Gas Emissions Fell 5.4% In 2023, Says Data

Gas use for electricity generation fell 21.1 percent in 2023

UK greenhouse gas emissions fell by 5.4 percent in 2023, largely due to a reduction in the amount of gas used in power stations, according to official data published on Thursday.

Net emissions of all greenhouse gases were estimated to have been 384.2 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent in 2023, compared to 406.2 million tonnes in 2022, the government’s provisional figures showed.

Carbon dioxide emissions decreased by 6.6 percent annually to 302.8 million tonnes, part of a 52.7-percent decrease in total greenhouse gas emissions since 1990.

Gas use for electricity generation fell 21.1 percent in 2023, “primarily due to higher electricity imports from France, as well as UK electricity demand continuing to decline”, said the report.

The reduced demand is mainly due to “greater efficiency resulting from improvements in technology and a decline in the relative importance of energy-intensive industries”, it added.

High energy prices are also likely to have been a factor, with less fuel being used to heat buildings and by industry, said the report.

Nuclear and renewables accounted for 56.7 percent of fuel used for electricity generation in 2023, up from 22.2 percent in 1990.

Domestic transport remained the largest source of UK emissions, accounting for 29.1 percent in 2023, almost all of which are from carbon dioxide, the main source being the use of petrol and diesel in road vehicles.

However, the sector’s emissions decreased by 1.4 percent in 2023, the first fall since 2020 when travel was heavily restricted due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Germany in January reported a 9.8 percent fall in carbon dioxide emissions in 2023 due to the sharp decline in coal consumption and crisis in its industrial sector.

And France last week said its domestic greenhouse gas emissions had fallen by 4.8 percent over the same period.

Kothagudem: Yellandu police have busted a gang that was opening bank accounts in the names of innocent people and committing cybercrimes through their accounts without their knowledge.

The accused Sudhakar along with a man Ashok Gupta from Dubai called his brother-in-law Kasya Chinababu alias Harsha of Gurralapadu village in Khammam Rural Mandal sometime back asking the latter to open a current bank account for trading.

He offered Rs 50,000 for opening the account. Harsha, who works as a loan consultant in HDFC Bank, Gandhi Chowk branch, Khammam, opened a bank account in the name of his wife Priyanka and gave the details to the accused. After some time, Gupta called Harsha again and asked for five more bank accounts.

Then Harsha’s wife Priyanka offered money to her friend Chaitanya of Yellandu to open the bank accounts.

Chaitanya promised a loan of Rs 15, 000 each to five Dwakra women he knew and opened bank accounts at Gandhi Chowk in Khammam.

He sent the account details to Sudhakar and Ashok Gupta through Harsha, who gave Rs 1 lakh to Chaitanya, who in turn gave Rs 75, 000 to the five women in whose names bank accounts were opened and he took the remaining Rs 25,000.

The police grew suspicious about the whole issue and probed into the matter.

They came to know that Gupta and Sudhakar with Dubai as base lured several businessmen in India through a WhatsApp group saying if they invested in crypto currency and bitcoins, they would get many times their money and made them to deposit the money in the accounts which they managed to open in the names of others.

Later, they transferred the money in those accounts to Dubai to live a luxurious life. Gupta and Sudhakar were booked by LB Nagar police in Hyderabad for similar online frauds. The accused who were involved in the case were remanded by the police on Thursday.

Hyderabad: BRS secretary general and Parliamentary party leader K Keshava Rao, along with his daughter and Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) Mayor Gadwal Vijayalakshmi, are poised to return to the Congress fold on March 30.

Keshava Rao joined the BRS (then TRS) in June 2013, and served as the party secretary general. He was nominated to the Rajya Sabha for two terms and led the BRS Parliamentary party.

Sources said Keshava Rao called on BRS chief K Chandrashekhar Rao at the latter’s Erravelli residence on Thursday where the duo are learnt to have discussed about the party internal affairs and political scenario in the State as well as at the national level.

"At Least Try For A Six": Ex-India Star 'Irked' By Hardik's Batting vs SRH

The IPL 2024 match between Mumbai Indians and Sunrisers Hyderabad on Wednesday turned to be a proper run fest with a combined 523 runs scored between the two sides. Sunrisers Hyderabad were in devastating form as they posted a total of 277/3 and in reply, Mumbai Indians played good cricket but ended up falling short by 31 runs. While there were several good batting performances in the match, former India star Manoj Tiwary was disappointed with MI skipper Hardik Pandya‘s performance. In his analysis, Tiwari said that he expected a ‘big-hitting player’ like Hardik to look for more big shots and in a match where the target was so high, his strike rate of 120 did not do his side any favours.

“If you look at the strike rate of MI batters… Hardik Pandya is a big-hitting player, but he struck at only 120. Yes, the bowling was good at that time, but one thing that irked me was the shots he hit against back-of-length. He was hitting the shots down the ground,” Tiwary told Cricbuzz.

“Generally, when the asking rate is 14-15, and you have such a big player, you’d want them to at least try for a six. Attempting to get a single or two, or even a four, wasn’t the demand of the situation. That irked me. And that shows he is not in good form. In the last match, he did start well but was dismissed. We have seen that he has rescued the team on many occasions,” he added.

Meanwhile, while speaking at the post-match presentation, Pandya said that the wicket was ‘good’ at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad.

He accepted that they have a ‘young bowling attack’ and they will learn from the 31-run loss against the Hyderabad-based franchise. The MI skipper showered praise on the Proteas pacer Kwena Maphaka and said that he was ‘fantastic’ in the game.

“Not really (thought SRH would score 277 at the toss). Wicket was good, 277 no matter how bad or good you bowl, if the opposition has to score that much, they have batted well. They (the bowlers) were good, it was tough out there, almost 500 runs were scored and the wicket was helping the batters, we could have done a few things here and there, but having said that, we have a young bowling attack and we will learn. If the ball goes this many times into the crowd, you will need time to get the overs done. Everyone (the batters) looked good and it is just a matter of time before we put things right. He (Kwena Maphaka) was fantastic, coming into his first game and getting overwhelmed, he was alright and backed his skillset, just needs some game time,” Pandya said.

Farmers in trouble because of Govt’s negligent attitude, says KTR

Farmers in trouble because of Govt’s negligent attitude, says KTR

Rajanna-Sircilla: BRS working president KT Rama Rao on Thursday said the negligent attitude of the Congress government was pushing farmers into misery.

Though standing crop in about 15 to 20 lakh acres across the State had withered due to the drought conditions, the State government was least bothered about it, he said, reiterating that the drought was a man-made one that was prevailing only because of the negligent approach of the Congress government.

Speaking after inspecting crops damaged due to the recent hailstorms in Sarampalli of Thangallapalli mandal on Thursday and interacting with the farmers, Rama Rao said that on December 9, Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy had assured to waive farm loans up to Rs.2 lakh.

However, there was no mention of the loan waiver even after four months in office.

Instead of waiving loans, the government through bankers was mounting pressure on farmers by issuing legal notices to clear farm loans.

Before the elections, former Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao had kept Rs.7,000 crore ready to give farmers Rythu Bandhu assistance for the Yasangi season.

However, instead of giving this to farmers, the Congress government was making payments to contractors. Last year, the BRS government had supplied water to agricultural fields in Rajanna-Sircilla district by filling the Annapurna reservoir, Ranganayaka Sagar and other water bodies by lifting Godavari water from Medigadda and Mid Manair reservoir.

Despite the sinking of three pillars of Medigadda reservoir, there were chances to draw water from the reservoir and supply it to farmers by building a cofferdam in Meddigadda.

However, the Congress government had no time to take up repair works. Instead, they were politically targetting the Kaleshwaram project and Chandrashekhar Rao, he said.

Revanth Reddy, who promised Rythu Bharosa to tenant farmers as well as farm labourers and to waive farm loans, had made 14 visits to Delhi so far, but not kept his promises, he said, asking the State government to write to the Election Commission since farmers were in trouble and about 200 farmers had already died by suicide.

Demanding a compensation of Rs.25,000 per acre for damaged crops, Rama Rao asked the government to open paddy purchasing centres immediately to procure the crop.

As promised before the polls, the government should provide a bonus of Rs 500 per quintal as well to farmers. Asking farmers not to resort to extreme steps, Rama Rao said BRS leaders were visiting fields across the State and interacting with farmers to instill confidence among them.

"We Were Expecting Dhoni To Come Out But…": Hussey Confirms Thala's Role

Following his side’s win over Gujarat Titans (GT) in their Indian Premier League (IPL) match, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) batting coach Michael Hussey lauded newly-appointed skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad, saying that he is a very “smart, cricket-savy” guy who is doing a great job, especially in rotating the bowlers and placing fields. The fortress at Chepauk stood untouched as the Chennai Super Kings registered a comprehensive 63-run win over the Gujarat Titans on Monday in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024.

Speaking after the match, Hussey was quoted as saying by ESPNCricinfo, “I think he (Ruturaj) been fantastic. He is very well prepared. Him, Flem (head coach Stephen Fleming), MSD – they get together and talk tactics before the game. But I think the way Rutu changes the bowlers around… the fields are very good. He seems very clear. The messaging to the bowlers is very clear as well.”

“So I think he is taking to the job brilliantly at the moment; I know he has some good support around him but he is a very smart guy and a very cricket-savvy guy, you know; he understands the game well. He has got a good team to work with as well, which helps as well, but I think he has been fantastic so far,” Hussey concluded his point.

The former Australian batter was also very appreciative of all-rounder Rachin Ravindra, the Kiwi star who has provided explosive starts to his team with knocks of 37 in 15 balls and 46 in 20 balls, respectively so far. Hussey said that Rachin is trying to soak up as much knowledge as he can and the crowd gives him more energy.

“He is just trying to soak up as much knowledge as he possibly can. I think he really feeds off the crowd a bit as well. And yeah, once you have got a couple of good shots away earlier, I think his confidence grew and he believed that ‘I can perform on this stage and grow from there.’ I think he has just gone out there with a clear mind and a nice positive attitude and got off to a good start. There is not a lot to work on with these level of world-class players,” said Hussey.

One of the biggest surprises of the match was a cameo by 20-year-old Sameer Rizwi, in which he scored 14 in six balls with two sixes. A key highlight was him smoking T20 superstar Rashid Khan for a massive six on the very first ball of his IPL career and launching another big hit on his fourth ball.

Hussey said that Rizwi has natural hitting ability, especially against spinners.

“Well, he has got a lot of natural ability and natural hitting ability. We have seen it at practice, you know, especially against the spinners. I mean, he can hit a long way and he can hit the ball very cleanly,” said the coach.

“But it is still a big ask for a young player to come in for his first IPL game against arguably the best T20 bowler of all time, Rashid Khan and hit the first ball that you face for six. I mean, that is just crazy, is not it? So we are very excited for him,” he added.

Hussey said that Rizwi was excited to play in front of the packed Chepauk crowd and it was his youth and fearlessness that helped him play with freedom. The batting coach lauded the think-thank for promoting the up-and-coming batter ahead of MS Dhoni.

“He was excited to play, especially here at Chepauk, with such a great crowd. And I think that is the great thing about youth, they have no fear so they can come out and just play with that complete freedom, right? It was also a bit of a masterstroke from the think tank as well,” said the former Aussie great.

“Because I think we were all expecting MSD to come out and play those last sort of a few balls. But they realised that he [Rizvi] has got some natural power against spin and that is why they wanted to send the youngster out. And, you know, he delivered two sixes at the end, which was great for his confidence,” concluded Hussey.

Lastly, Hussey said that it has been a directive from Fleming to “keep pushing the game forward”.

“With the Impact Player rule coming in, we have basically got an extra batsman and an extra bowler throughout the game. So the batting order keeps lengthening. I think we have MSD at number eight. Which is crazy, you know, and MSD is batting really well at the moment as well,” said Hussey.

“So, because we have got so much depth in our resources there, it means the players up the order [are not] in two minds, take the positive route and they will certainly have the backing from the coaches and the captain that we would prefer you to keep trying to push the game forward. If you get out while doing so, that is fine. You will never be criticised for that. Flem’s talk is about playing fast. We want to keep playing fast,” concluded Hussey.

Coming into the match, GT put CSK to bat first. Fiery knocks from Rachin Ravindra (46 in 20 balls, with six fours and three sixes), skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad (46 in 36 balls, with five fours and a six) and Dube (51 in 23 balls, with two fours and five sixes) took CSK to 206/6 in 20 overs.

Rashid Khan (2/49) and Spencer Johnson (1/35) were among the picks of the bowlers for GT.

In the run-chase, GT kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Sai Sudharsan (37 in 31 balls, with three fours), Wriddhiman Saha (21 in 17 balls, with four boundaries) and David Miller (21 in 16 balls, with three fours) tried to put up a fight, but it was just not enough. GT were restricted to 143/8 and lost by 63 runs.

Tushar Deshpande (2/21), Deepak Chahar (2/28) and Mustafizur Rahman (2/30) were the top bowlers for CSK.

Dube took home the ‘Player of the Match’ award.
