'Nonsense': BJP Demands Apology From DMK Leader Over 'Face Cream' Remark

DMK leader Kathir Anand made the alleged remarks earlier on Wednesday (File)

Chennai:

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has demanded an apology from Kathir Anand, candidate of the ruling Dravid Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) from Vellore Lok Sabha constituency, over his alleged remarks against women during an election event.

Expressing dissapointment over the alleged ‘fairness cream’ remarks by the ruling party’s candidate, Tamil Nadu BJP vice president Narayanan Thirupathy called it ‘nonsense’ adding that the DMK government is ‘making a mockery’ of people.

“This is not just an insult. They think people are fools. This is nonsense. This DMK government is making a mockery of people. He should apologise for what he has said,” the BJP leader said.

DMK leader Kathir Anand made the alleged remarks earlier on Wednesday, March 27, while addressing an election event, highlighting the state government’s financial aid scheme offering Rs 1000 monthly assistance to women heads of family.

“Everyone’s face looks stunning and bright. All are shining. It looks like you have all applied fair and lovely, ponds powder and singhar kum kum. What is the reason? Didn’t you all receive Rs 1000? After the election whoever else missed will also get Kalaignar financial aid,” Kathir Anand said.

The Kalaignar Magalir Urimai Thogai Thittam (Kalaignar Women’s Rights Grant Scheme) of the state government was launched in September last year. The scheme is among the crucial poll promises that catapulted the DMK to power. Under this scheme, Rs 1000 is being deposited into the accounts of all eligible women beneficiaries.

Kyrgyzstan offers second chance to medicos

Pursuing a medical degree in Kyrgyzstan costs around Rs 35 lakh, including living expenses.

Bishkek: Giving a second chance at fulfilling their dream to thousands of students every year, the medical education ecosystem in Kyrgyzstan is proving to be a boon to Telugu students. Over 2,000 of them are currently pursuing their MBBS degree in this landlocked central Asian country.

With just over 1 lakh medical seats in India and the number of students appearing for the qualifying exam more than 20 lakh, the competition for a free seat is cutthroat. And the cost of medical education otherwise is shelling out at least a crore. On the other hand, pursuing an undergraduate medical degree in Kyrgyzstan costs around Rs 35 lakh, including living expenses. Their five-year course and over six months of internship is on a par with the education standards here.

Supported by the ISM Edu Tech Pvt. Limited, brainchild of Dr. Phani Bhushan Potu who himself has completed his MBBS from Russia, scores of young aspirants are transitioning into able doctors every semester.

They offer admissions into two universities — I.K. Akhunbaev Kyrgyz State Medical Academy (KSMA), a government university, and the International Higher School of Medicine (IHSM), run by ISM. Their main campuses are located in the capital city Bishkek, with another IHSM satellite school in Issyk-Kul, a serene area surrounded by mountains.

“The goal is to give quality education at an affordable cost and help make more doctors for our country. Students will have to qualify for NEET to secure admission to these universities. We have multiple Indian staff there who will support and guide them every step of the way,” says Phani.

Each class has a strength of not more than 20 students, with faculty and labs like one of the largest anatomy labs at KSMA. Further, as one has to qualify for the Foreign Medical Graduates Examination (FMGE) to practise medicine in India after international study, ISM has arranged for special classes for Indian students to help them prepare for the exam. With high academic standards and international learning experience at an affordable price, Kyrgyzstan has evolved to be the go-to for overseas medical education.

Lufthansa Ground Staff Wins Pay Rise Of 12.5% After Several Strikes

Lufthansa Ground Staff Wins Pay Rise Of 12.5% After Several Strikes

Employees will also receive bonuses to help combat high inflation of 3,000 euros (Representational)

Lufthansa’s ground staff will get average pay rises of 12.5 percent under a deal reached after a series of crippling strikes, the German airline giant said Thursday.

The carrier and union Verdi, which represents some 25,000 ground staff, finally reached an agreement Wednesday, averting the threat of fresh walkouts over the Easter break.

The 12.5-percent increase was in line with Verdi’s demands, and will be implemented in two stages over two years.

Employees will also receive bonuses to help combat high inflation of 3,000 euros, and improvements in other areas including extra holiday pay and flexible working hours.

Several rounds of direct talks between Lufthansa and Verdi had failed, but they finally achieved a breakthrough after agreeing to outside arbitration.

“We fought hard for this compromise and we can now be very satisfied,” Verdi negotiator Marvin Reschinsky said.

“We have achieved real increases in real wages, which will make up for the shortfall of recent years.”

Verdi members still need to take part in a survey to decide whether they accept the deal, but the union has recommended they do so.

The ground staff walked out in early March and in February, on both occasions leading to almost Lufthansa’s entire flight schedule being cancelled.

Lufthansa cabin crew, who went on strike at major airports earlier this month, have by contrast still not reached a pay deal with the carrier.

The group — whose carriers include Lufthansa, Eurowings, Austrian, Swiss and Brussels Airlines — had to be bailed out by the German government during the coronavirus pandemic.

But it has since bounced back strongly as travel has recovered, prompting unions to argue the airline is not passing on enough of its bumper earnings to its staff.

This week’s deal brings some much-needed good news for employers in Europe’s top economy, who have faced a tough season of wage negotiations as workers push for higher pay to offset inflation.

“All that PM has done in the last ten years is…”: Jairam Ramesh

“All that PM has done in the last ten years is…”: Jairam Ramesh

New Delhi: Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh on Thursday hit back to Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his remark on lawyer’s letter to CJI. He said that all that the Prime Minister has done in the last ten years is divide, distort, divert, and defame.

“The PM’s brazenness in orchestrating and coordinating an attack on the judiciary, in the name of defending the judiciary, is the height of hypocrisy! The Supreme Court has delivered body blows to him in recent weeks. The Electoral Bonds Scheme is but one example. The Supreme Court declared them to be unconstitutional – and it is now proved beyond doubt that they were a blatant instrument of fear, blackmail, and intimidation to force companies to donate to the BJP,” Jairam said on X.

He further alleged that instead of giving a legal guarantee to MSP, the Prime Minister has given a legal guarantee to corruption.

“All that the Prime Minister has done in the last ten years is divide, distort, divert, and defame. 140 crore Indians are waiting to give him a befitting reply very soon,” he added.

Meanwhile, reacting to the concerns raised by over 600 lawyers against a “vested interest group,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday took a dig at Congress and said that “to browbeat and bully others is vintage Congress culture.” “To browbeat and bully others is vintage Congress culture. 5 decades ago itself they had called for a “committed judiciary” – they shamelessly want commitment from others for their selfish interests but desist from any commitment towards the nation. No wonder 140 crore Indians are rejecting them,” PM Modi posted on X.

More than 600 lawyers addressed a letter to Chief Justice of India (CJI) Justice Dhananjaya Y Chandrachud , expressing serious concerns against the actions of a specific interest group aiming to undermine the judiciary’s integrity.

This group, according to the lawyers, is employing pressure tactics to influence judicial outcomes, particularly in cases involving political figures and corruption allegations. These actions, they argue, pose a significant threat to the democratic fabric and the trust placed in judicial processes
