Paytm Discontinues Inter-Company Agreements With Paytm Payments Bank

Paytm did not specify what agreements were being terminated.

BENGALURU:

Paytm and its payments bank unit have mutually agreed to discontinue various inter-company agreements in the process to reduce dependencies, the embattled payments firm said on Friday.

Paytm, formally known as One 97 Communications, did not specify what agreements were being terminated.

The payments bank agreed to simplify the shareholders’ agreement to “support (Paytm Payments Bank’s) governance, independent of its shareholders,” the company said.

Paytm CEO Vijay Shekhar Sharma owns a 51% stake in Paytm Payments Bank while Paytm owns the rest.

The move came days after Mr Sharma stepped down as non-executive chairman and board member of the payments bank unit, as part of a major overhaul that follows a central bank clampdown.

The Reserve Bank of India had asked Paytm Payments Bank to wind down operations by March 15 due to persistent compliance issues and supervisory concerns, triggering a meltdown in Paytm’s stock.

The action against the unit followed concerns including inadequate customer identity checks and a lack of arms-length distance from parent company Paytm, sources previously told Reuters.

Gas Cylinder May Cost Rs 2,000 If BJP Returns To Power: Mamata Banerjee

Gas Cylinder May Cost Rs 2,000 If BJP Returns To Power: Mamata Banerjee

Mamata Banerjee said we will have to go back to old practice of collecting wood to light a fire.

Jhargram (WB):

West Bengal Chief Minister and TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee on Thursday claimed that if the BJP returns to power at the Centre, the government would hike the price of cooking gas cylinder to Rs 2,000.

The chief minister was addressing a gathering at a government programme here in Jhargram district.

“If the BJP wins the elections, they may hike the price of a cooking gas cylinder to Rs 1,500 or Rs 2,000. Then again, we will have to go back to the old practice of collecting wood to light a fire,” Ms Banerjee said.

She also gave an ultimatum to the BJP-led central government to complete building houses under the Awas Yojana by April-end, claiming that otherwise her government would start constructing them from May.

On Tuesday, Ms Banerjee had set a deadline of April 1 for the central government to complete building houses for the beneficiaries or else her government would build around 11 lakh houses for them.

Referring to her government paying MGNREGA workers their due wages which were allegedly not paid by the BJP-led central government, Ms Banerjee said, “I asked one youth whether he got the money for the 100 days’ work scheme. He said he got around Rs 30,000. This was the amount that the central government had not paid people like him for the last two years. We have paid 59 lakh people their dues.”

The Trinamool Congress supremo, however, remained silent on the arrest of party leader Shajahan Sheikh, accused of sexual atrocities on women and land grab in Sandeshkhali area in North 24 Parganas district. Sheikh was arrested early on Thursday.

Crypto Exchange To Refund $1.1 Billion To Customers Locked Out Since 2022

Crypto Exchange To Refund $1.1 Billion To Customers Locked Out Since 2022

Customers have not been able to access the funds since late 2022.

Cryptocurrency exchange Gemini will return at least $1.1 billion to customers of its defunct lending program and pay a fine of $37 million for unsafe and unsound practices as part of a settlement with the New York Department of Financial Services, the regulator said on Wednesday.

Gemini’s Earn program, which was offered in partnership with crypto lender Genesis Global Capital, was halted during a crypto market crash in November 2022. That dislocation caused Genesis to file for bankruptcy, and has led to extensive litigation between Genesis, Gemini and Genesis’s parent company, Digital Currency Group.

The Take

The agreement means Gemini’s Earn customers, who have not been able to access the funds held in those accounts since late 2022, are one step closer to regaining access to their money.

NYDFS said on Wednesday that it retains the right to bring further action against Gemini if the company does not fulfill its obligation to return at least $1.1 billion to customers following the resolution of Genesis’ bankruptcy.

Context

Gemini is run by Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss – also known as the Winklevoss twins, who grabbed national attention for their legal battle against Meta Platforms’ CEO Mark Zuckerberg. The company had previously sued DCG over the failure of their joint crypto lending partnership.

The two companies partnered in December 2020 to allow Gemini customers the chance to loan their crypto assets to Genesis in exchange for earning interest, ultimately collecting billions of dollars’ worth of crypto assets from investors.

NYDFS claimed that Gemini failed to monitor and conduct due diligence on Genesis throughout the life of the Earn program and failed to maintain adequate reserves.

Key Quote

“Gemini failed to conduct due diligence on an unregulated third party, later accused of massive fraud, harming Earn customers who were suddenly unable to access their assets after Genesis Global Capital experienced a financial meltdown,” said NYDFS Superintendent Adrienne Harris in a statement. “Today’s settlement is a win for Earn customers, who have a right to the assets they entrusted to Gemini.”

NDA Just 3 Short Of Majority In Rajya Sabha After Latest Round Of Polls

NDA Just 3 Short Of Majority In Rajya Sabha After Latest Round Of Polls

The majority mark in the 245-member Rajya Sabha is 123.

New Delhi:

The BJP-led NDA is just three short seats of majority in the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of parliament. With the election to 56 Rajya Sabha seats this month, the BJP alone has inched closer to 100. Altogether, the party managed to win 30 of the 56 seats in this round of elections, taking its score in the Upper House to 97 and the NDA to 118.

Candidates on 41 of the 56 seats had got elected unopposed earlier this month. Election was held on 15 seats across three states on Tuesday. There, the party scooped up two extra seats — one in Congress-ruled Himachal Pradesh and one in Uttar Pradesh — thanks to cross-voting by MLAs of the Congress and the Samajwadi Party.

The majority mark in the 245-member Upper House is 123. However, currently five seats are vacant, four of them in Jammu and Kashmir, which has been under President’s Rule, and one in the nominated member category. This brings down the strength of the House too 240 and the majority mark to 121.

With the BJP dominating the Lok Sabha, the numbers in the Rajya Sabha have become crucial in terms of passing of bills.

Till 2019, several bills — including the land reform and Triple Talaq Bills of 2017 and 2018 — got blocked by the Opposition in the Upper House. While the land reform bill was not re-introduced, the government went ahead to pass the bill against Triple Talaq in its second term.

After 2019, despite not having majority, the NDA government managed to get crucial bills — including the repealing of Article 370, abolition of triple talaq, Delhi Service bill and others — passed in the upper house with the support of neutral parties such as Naveen Patnaik’s Biju Janata Dal and Andhra Pradesh’s YSR Congress.

For the Congress-led Opposition, a minority position in the Rajya Sabha would push them in a corner.

The INDIA bloc is yet to get the seat sharing process completed. The Congress is expected to finalise the seats for Maharashtra this evening at a meeting with allies Shiv Sena and Sharad Pawar’s faction of the Nationalist Congress Party.

"Ye Hoti Hai Fielding": Pak Fans Stunned As Pollard Pulls Off Stunner

West Indies great Kieron Pollard rolled back the years with a match-winning fifty for Karachi Kings in their Pakistan Super League (PSL) clash against Lahore Qalandars on Saturday. Pollard slammed 58 off just 33 balls to guide Karchi Kings to a crucial win at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore. The former West Indies captain came out to bat with his team reeling at 44/4, while chasing 176. His knock saw Karachi Kings achieve the total on the final ball of the match.

Apart from his exploits with the bat, Pollard also had a busy day in the outfield, taking two brilliant catches to help his side restrict the hosts to 175/6.

He pulled off a stunning juggling catch to dismiss in-form batter Jahandad Khan. The incident happened in the 13th over of Lahore Qalandars’ innings when Jahandad tried to pull Mir Hamza for a six over long-off.

While Jahandad did manage to time his shot, Pollard used his height and athleticism to pull the ball back with one hand, before juggling the ball to complete the catch.

Here’s how fans reacted to Pollard’s stunning effort:

Karchi Kings won the game by 2 wickets while Lahore Qalandars are yet to win a game so far this season.

Meanwhile, Several high-profile international cricketers have already pulled out of the PSL due to the overlapping of dates with other franchise-based tournaments and many cricket boards denying permission to their players to compete in domestic T20 competitions.

A PSL franchise owner reportedly told the PCB revisit the tournament window, as it is not possible to get big players when three leagues are happening on after the other.

“The SA20 ended recently and the ILT20 concludes on the day the PSL begins, so it is getting difficult to sign big players now,” he said on condition of anonymity.

He also pointed out that January-February is a busy season for international cricket series. Sri Lanka are playing a series against Afghanistan, South Africa are in the middle of a two-Test series against New Zealand while West Indies are playing a series against Australia.

“There is an acute need to change the PSL window, else it will lose its charm if we don’t get big overseas names,” he added.

US Says Urgently Seeking Information On Gaza Aid Incident

US Says Urgently Seeking Information On Gaza Aid Incident

More than 100 killed as Israeli forces shot at the crowd as they came too close to aid truck.

Washington:

The United States on Thursday asked Israel to provide answers and ensure safe aid delivery after dozens were killed in a scramble for food shipments in Gaza, calling the situation “desperate.”

“We are urgently seeking additional information on exactly what took place,” State Department spokesman Matthew Miller told reporters as he offered condolences for those killed.

“We have been in touch with the Israeli government since early this morning and understand that an investigation is underway. We will be monitoring that investigation closely and pressing for answers,” he said.

He called on Israel to allow “as many points of access as possible, and to enable safe and secure distribution of that aid throughout Gaza.”

“We continue to make clear in all of our discussions with the government of Israel that all possible measures must be taken to allow the entry of more assistance into Gaza,” he said.

Miller said the rush for aid showed that the situation was “incredibly desperate” in Gaza, where the United Nations has warned of the risk of famine.

“People are swarming these trucks because they’re hungry, because they need food, because they need medicine and other assistance,” he said.

He called for a deal on a ceasefire, after President Joe Biden warned earlier in the day that the killings would complicate negotiations.

Biden also spoke Thursday with the leaders of Egypt and Qatar in hopes of progress.

“The best way to alleviate the ongoing suffering of the Palestinian people is to reach an agreement for a temporary ceasefire that would get hostages out, enable more aid to come in and allow that aid to move everywhere inside Gaza,” Miller said.

India Must Build Deep National Strengths To Be Leading Power: S Jaishankar

India Must Build Deep National Strengths To Be Leading Power: S Jaishankar

New Delhi::

India must build “deep national strengths” for its transition towards a leading power and the country’s goals and ambitions cannot be determined by the goodwill of others, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said on Thursday.

In a virtual address at the Asia Economic Dialogue held in Pune, he said the vision of the Narendra Modi government and its programmes over the last decade are aimed at building national strength.

“As the most populous country that will be third largest economy by the end of the decade, our goals and ambitions cannot be determined by the goodwill of others,” Mr Jaishankar said.

“We must build deep national strengths during the ‘Amrit Kaal’ that will drive the transition towards a developed economy and a leading power,” he said.

“This is the vision of the Modi Government and our initiatives and programmes of the last decade are aimed at this end,” he added.

The minister also delved into various geopolitical challenges facing the globe.

“One is the supply-chain challenge that arises from a particular economic hardwiring created by the globalization era. Whether it is finished products, intermediates or components, the world is dangerously dependent on a limited number of suppliers,” he said.

“How to introduce greater resilience and reliability is today central to de-risking the global economy. All of us need more options and must work to create them,” he said.

The second challenge Jaishankar identified as that of technology.

“The digital era has given it an altogether different connotation because it is so intrusive. It is not just our interests that are at stake but often the most personal of our decisions and choices,” he said.

“Such an era demands more trust and transparency. But in fact, we are seeing the reverse where technology providers are concerned,” he noted.

The minister also talked about “unpredictability and opaqueness” while referring to globalisation.

“The third is the challenge of over-concentrations stemming from the nature of globalisation. They are heightened by unpredictability and opaqueness. We discovered this most sharply during the Covid period,” he said.

“But from time to time, we are also reminded when market dominance is weaponised. For the Global South, this is particularly serious given the extent of dependence,” he added.

Mr Jaishankar said these three phenomena come together particularly impactfully in terms of evolution of critical and emerging technologies.

“To create a more safe, secure and cooperative world, we clearly need greater international cooperation. Only that can serve to mitigate unilateral demands, economic domination or technology assertions,” he said.

“For India, this means moving across a broad front of domains that all contribute to comprehensive national power. It requires a massive upgrade of our skills base,” he noted.
