4 More Gaza Children Die Of 'Malnutrition And Dehydration', Says Health Ministry

Four more children have died of “malnutrition and dehydration” in war-torn Gaza, the Hamas-ruled territory’s health ministry said on Friday, the latest such reported deaths as famine warnings mount.

The deaths occurred at Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza, ministry spokesman Ashraf al-Qudra said in a statement, noting that the number of child “malnutrition and dehydration” deaths now totalled 10.

Earlier Friday, a spokesman for the UN humanitarian agency OCHA told reporters that “if something doesn’t change, a famine is almost inevitable” in Gaza.

“Once a famine is declared, it is too late for too many people,” said the spokesman, Jens Laerke.

Global attention turned to the dire humanitarian conditions in Gaza on Thursday, when the health ministry said more than 100 people were killed after desperate Palestinians rushed an aid convoy.

Israeli troops opened fire as Palestinian civilians scrambled for food supplies during a chaotic disturbance.

World leaders called on Friday for an investigation into the deaths and a ceasefire nearly five months into the war, which kicked off with Hamas’s surprise attack on Israel on October 7 that resulted in the deaths of around 1,160 people, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally based on official figures.

Israel’s retaliatory offensive to eliminate Hamas has now killed at least 30,228, mostly women and children, according to the ministry’s latest toll.

Cubans to demand an end to Israel’s genocidal war on Gaza

The people of Cuba will join millions across the world today to demand that Israel end its genocidal war against the Palestinians in Gaza and stop its planned March 10 invasion of Rafah.

Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel announced X on Friday stating “Cuba joins the global mobilization this March 2 in support of Palestine. In all of the provinces and in Havana, we will be on the streets in solidarity with our brother people and to condemn the holocaust that Israel seeks to provoke in Rafah. Everyone for Gaza!”

The protest is organized by the Union of Young Communists and the Women’s Federation of Cuba. It will be held in the Cuban capital Havana, at the José Martí Anti-Imperialist Plaza which is located in front of the US Embassy where anti-imperialist protests are held in Havana.

Wasim Mustafa, a third-year Palestinian medical student in Cuba told Peoples Dispatch, “Cuba continues to provide outstanding support to the Palestinian cause and the right of the Palestinian people to life, to the best of its ability.”

Mustafa highlighted Cuba’s consistent position to stand with Palestine, politically and materially, “Over the years it has not tired of receiving and graduating medical students from Palestine, and here it is today…renewing its position with Gaza, Palestine, and its people in this terrible moment, by organizing several massive solidarity marches in its cities and streets.”

“The march on Saturday March 2, will witness Cuba’s loyal stance towards the just cause,” Mustafa declared.

Israel began waging the onslaught against Gaza on October 7, following al-Aqsa Storm, a surprise operation staged by the coastal sliver’s resistance groups against the occupied territories.

At least 30,228 Palestinians, mostly women and children, have been killed and 71,377 others injured in the relentless Israeli aggression.

No earlier than on Thursday, the United Nations human rights chief expressed dismay concerning the brutality with which the Israeli regime was waging the war.

“There appear to be no bounds to — no words to capture — the horrors that are unfolding before our eyes in Gaza,” Volker Turk told the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has reiterated that his regime is intent on the ground invasion of Rafah, in its bid for “total victory” over the Gaza-based resistance movement of Hamas.

Netanyahu claimed that once a ground invasion happens, victory would be just “weeks away,” and that a potential ceasefire, being discussed in Doha, would only delay the operation.

Hamas, itself, many regional countries, and even the majority of Israelis have, however, asserted that it would be impossible to oust the movement, which has vowed to resist the Israeli regime’s deadly aggression.

Rajasthan Being Run By Centre Through Remote Control: Ashok Gehlot

Rajasthan Being Run By Centre Through Remote Control: Ashok Gehlot

The state doesn’t seem to have a government for the last 3 months, Ashok Gehlot said.

Jaipur:

Former Rajasthan chief minister Ashok Gehlot on Friday accused the Centre of governing the state through remote control and undermining the authority of the elected chief minister.

The state doesn’t seem to have a government for the last three months, he alleged.

He said that ministers are not able to appoint their private secretaries according to their wish and the Centre is implementing the Gujarat model in Rajasthan.

“It’s been two-three months of the BJP government in the state. There is a discussion in every household as to why there is no governance. I believe that only the chief minister cannot be blamed for it. It is a remote-controlled government which is against the spirit of democracy,” Mr Gehlot told reporters after moving into the new government bungalow from the official CM’s residence, now allotted to the new incumbent.

He added, “An elected Chief Minister has authority, and the government is run by that authority and it provides good governance. They (Centre) have remote-controlled the government. The chief secretary is the de facto chief minister and I have heard that deputy chief ministers are more powerful than the chief minister.” Reacting to his statements, Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal said all three bodies of democracy are working together in the state whereas in the previous government, the power was divided between two centres – apparently referring to the tussle between Ashok Gehlot and his former deputy Sachin Pilot.

Mr Gehlot earlier said if the authority of the chief minister is weakened, it’s the public which will suffer the most. “The chief minister cannot govern without authority.” The Congress leader said there is a possibility that people in the BJP may be “conspiring” against Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma.

“What do you want? The Prime Minister should answer this. What does the Prime Minister want in the country?” he asked.

“This is also an example of the dictatorial tendencies reining supreme in the country … ‘Double-engine’ means both the engines should be of equal capacity but that is not the case here,” Mr Gehlot added.

Mr Meghwal said that the BJP government led by Bhajanlal Sharma has worked more in two months as compared to the two months of the Gehlot government.

“All three bodies including legislature, executive and judiciary are working together in the state whereas in the previous Congress government, there were two power centres. One was led by Ashok Gehlot whereas the other was led by Sachin Pilot,” Mr Meghwal said.

Biden Says "Hoping" For Gaza Ceasefire Deal By Ramadan

Biden Says 'Hoping' For Gaza Ceasefire Deal By Ramadan

Biden said he was “hoping” for agreement on a ceasefire deal in the Israel-Hamas conflict by Ramadan.

Washington:

US President Joe Biden said Friday he was “hoping” for a ceasefire deal in the Israel-Hamas conflict by the Muslim holy month of Ramadan but agreement was still not sealed.

“I’m hoping so, we’re still working real hard on it. We’re not there yet,” he told reporters at the White House when asked if he expected a deal by Ramadan, which will start on March 10 or 11, depending on the lunar calendar.

“We’ll get there but we’re not there yet — we may not get there,” Biden added, without elaborating, as he headed to his helicopter to spend the weekend at the presidential Camp David retreat.

Biden had said at the beginning of this week that he expected a deal by Monday for a six-week halt in the fighting between Israel and Hamas, but has steadily walked back the timeline.

The 81-year-old Democrat announced earlier Friday that the United States would soon start airdropping aid to Gaza, a day after dozens of desperate Palestinians were killed rushing an aid convoy.

Biden has said the incident could complicate talks, but would not comment Friday on what was holding up a deal, adding: “I’m not going to tell you that because that’ll get involved in the negotiations.”

In Tamil Nadu, BJP Gets "Field Nirmala Sitharaman" Dare From AIADMK Leader

In Tamil Nadu, BJP Gets 'Field Nirmala Sitharaman' Dare From AIADMK Leader

PM Modi was in Tamil Nadu this week to drum up support for the BJP before the Lok Sabha election.

Chennai:

Prime Minister Narendra Modi‘s Bharatiya Janata Party, like its rivals the INDIA bloc, is racing to conclude seat-share deals with allies in the southern state of Tamil Nadu – having this week wrapped accords in Assam, Jharkhand, and Uttar Pradesh – ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha election.

Unlike the opposition grouping, however, the BJP has run into rather significant roadblocks in a state where it has traditionally struggled – one seat in four earlier Lok Sabha polls – and has now been thrown a challenge by its disgruntled former ally – the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam.

Speaking at a party event Thursday, senior AIADMK leader KP Munusamy dared the BJP to field Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar – whose Tamil roots are often flagged by the party – “if they indeed believe their support has grown in the state”.

“Can BJP field union ministers Nirmala Sitharaman and S Jaishankar from any constituency in Tamil Nadu for upcoming general election… if they indeed believe their support has grown?” he asked.

Ms Sitharaman and Mr Jaishankar are currently Rajya Sabha MPs from Karnataka and Gujarat, and there is no indication they will be fielded in this Lok Sabha election. A first list of over 100 names is expected from the BJP later today, which could include Mr Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah.

Mr Munusamy’s fiery challenge underlines the two parties’ (current) bitter relationship.

The AIADMK snapped ties with the BJP in September last year; the trigger was critical comments by the BJP’s state unit boss, K Annamalai, about late former Chief Minister CN Annadurai. Mr Annadurai was Tamil Nadu’s first Chief Minister, and also AIADMK founder MG Ramachandran’s mentor.

A defiant Mr Annamalai refused to apologise and, in not doing so, was backed by the BJP, leading to talk his attacks on the AIADMK were a calculated ploy to force the regional party to break ties.

Since then the BJP has been without a major alliance partner in the state, in which it has a vote-share of less than three per cent. The party has sealed only a deal with the Tamil Manila Congress. Sources told NDTV the BJP has reached out to the AIADMK, but these efforts have been snubbed, for now.

There is also talk of a deal with the Pattali Makkal Katchi of S Ramadoss, and speculation senior political figures, like O Panneerselvam, may join. That, though, will be only in an individual capacity.

The party, it appears, has placed its hopes of cracking Tamil Nadu on Mr Annamalai’s shoulders.

There is some good news, though, after 15 former MLAs and an ex-MP joined the BJP in Delhi this week, in the presence of union ministers Rajeev Chandrasekhar and L Murugan, and Mr Annamalai.

Most of the 16 new faces were from the AIADMK.

Mr Munusamy’s challenge also comes after the Prime Minister’s visit to the state, where the political landscape is dominated, entirely, by the AIADMK and the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam.

Within the AIADMK, many had celebrated the break-up with the BJP, pointing out the Tamil party had lost – overwhelmingly – elections contested together. In the 2021 state election the AIADMK won 75 seats – down from 136 in 2016 – and it lost power. In the 2019 general election it was routed.

The AIADMK-BJP alliance won just a single seat, while rivals DMK-Congress claimed 38 of 39.

How Is DMK Faring?

The ruling DMK, which is part of the Congress-led INDIA bloc, is in a happier place, having closed deals with smaller outfits Indian Union Muslim League and Kongu Desa Makkal Katchi.

The big discussion will be with the Congress, which won nine of 10 seats it fought last time in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. There is also buzz actor Kamal Hassan’s Makkal Needhi Maiam may join.

Google collaborates with fact checkers to weed out misinformation in elections

New Delhi: Ahead of general elections, Google on Friday announced a collaboration with fact checkers in India for early detection of online misinformation, including deepfakes, and will create a common repository that news publishers can use through the electioneering.

In a blog post, Google said as part of its commitment to enable the news ecosystem to combat misinformation, it will support Shakti, India Election Fact-Checking Collective, a consortium of news publishers and fact checkers in India, working together to aid the early detection of online misinformation, including deepfakes.

“Starting today until the conclusion of the General Elections in India, the project will focus on connecting independent fact checkers and Indian language publishers, giving them a collaborative platform to share fact checks, research resources and alerts on elections-related viral misinformation and deepfakes, saving crucial time,” it said.

Fact-checks in multiple Indian languages and formats, including videos, will be shared and amplified via partnering news publishers, ensuring they reach a wider set of language users and diverse audiences across the country.

Google working with the fact checkers will create a common repository that news publishers can use to tackle the challenges of misinformation at scale.
India goes to polls in April/May to elect a new government.

Shakti, a pan-India network, will be driven by DataLEADS, in collaboration with the Misinformation Combat Alliance, The Quint, VishvasNews, Boom, Factly, and Newschecker, with support from the Google News Initiative.

In addition, the project will provide news organisations and fact-checkers essential training in advanced fact-checking methodologies, deepfake detection, and the latest Google tools like the Fact Check Explorer, to streamline verification processes.

Google further said that the fact-checking collective will prioritise publishers producing original news in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, Bengali, and Marathi.
With this launch, the Fact-Checking Collective will continue to onboard new partners and scale the effort to reach most parts of the country.

As India prepares for its general elections, Google said it recognises the essential role of news publishers, journalists, and fact-checkers in helping people access the trustworthy information they need for informed participation.

“At Google, we have long supported this work by investing in features, resources and partnerships that can help people better evaluate online information. Continuing our commitment to enable the news ecosystem to combat misinformation, we are supporting Shakti, India Election Fact-Checking Collective.” To strengthen fact-checking organisations worldwide, including those in India, Google and YouTube had previously launched the USD 13.2 million Global Fact Check Fund which has helped to enhance the capabilities of local and regional media organisations in producing high-quality, impactful fact-checking content.

The Fact Checking Collective in India expands Google’s efforts such as the GNI India Training Network, PollCheck, Data Accelerator and Data Dialogue, through which, since 2018, it has supported the training of more than 65,000 journalists, media educators and journalism students in 15-plus languages, and empowered them with digital tools and skills needed to find, verify, and tell engaging stories while tackling the ever-evolving risk of misinformation.

“Amidst a complex information landscape, with the elections round the corner, the Collective is a crucial intervention towards building a robust fact-checking ecosystem to safeguard the democratic processes,” DataLEADS Founder and CEO Syed Nazakat said.

Co-founder and Managing Director of The Quint, Ritu Kapur said that mis- and disinformation are proliferating at an alarming pace, aided by technology and fuelled and funded by those who stand to gain by it. The only way to combat the malaise is to join forces as fact checkers and news publishers, Kapur said.

Tendulkar Touches Lives, Helps In Surgeries To Put Smile Back On Children

Sachin Tendulkar has been touching lives since he emerged as of the greatest sporting icons in the world. The wonderkid from Mumbai rose to become a giant in world cricket with some unmatched feats spread over three decades. During his time with the Indian cricket team, Sachin Tendulkar was pillar of strength for the entire nation. Till the time he was at the crease, the hope for a win was always there no matter the toughness of the situation. Now, even after almost 10 years since retiring from Test cricket, Sachin Tendulkar is continuing to tough people’s lives.

On Friday he posted a video and revealed how he is supporting children with cleft lips.

“We don’t often think about our ability to smile, as a gift. We consider it a given. There are a few, who struggle to express even this basic emotion. Nearly 60,000 babies in India are born every year with deformities that inhibit their smiles,” Sachin Tendulkar posted on X.

“Through Sachin Tendulkar Foundation (@STF_India), we have been working with a wonderful set of doctors who strive to put a smile back on children’s faces, through cleft lip and palate surgeries.

“One of the centres we have been supporting is in Srinagar. During our trip to Jammu & Kashmir, we spent time in Inga Health Foundation’s hospital, interacting with doctors, children and their parents. Listening to the stories of how the surgery has transformed lives of these children was indeed gratifying. Anjali, Sara and I were all smiles after meeting these little heroes. We are happy to have contributed to this beautiful change in their lives.”

Legendary cricketer Sachin Tendulkar recentlyshared a “beautiful experience” from his Kashmir trip which will always be “etched” in his memory and the Master Blaster also emphasised the importance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s statements. The beauty and people’s exceptional hospitality left the Master Blaster in awe. The great Indian player, popularly known as the ‘God of Cricket’ treated his fans with a stunning video from his trip to Kashmir. In the video he posted on social media X (formerly Twitter), he was seen enjoying the snowfall in Gulmarg with his wife Anjali Tendulkar and daughter Sara Tendulkar.

Tendulkar reminisced about the beauty of the snow-covered nation in a post that featured a video and praised the locals for their warm welcome. “Jammu and Kashmir will remain a beautiful experience etched in my memory. There was snow all around but we felt warm because of people’s exceptional hospitality,” Tendulkar posted on X.

Tendulkar underlined that Prime Minister Modi had inspired him to uncover India’s various capitals.

“Hon’ble Prime Minister @narendramodiji said there is so much to see in our nation. Couldn’t agree more, especially after this trip,” he added.

The cricket icon also visited a cricket bat manufacturing plant. For those who don’t know, Kashmiri willow bats have a global reputation for excellence. Tendulkar also lauded the craftsmanship of the Kashmir Willow bats, describing them as great examples of ‘Made in India’ products. The legendary cricketer also encouraged people to visit Jammu and Kashmir, which he referred to as “a precious jewel of Incredible India,” as well as other places in India.

Heavy Snowfall Kills 15, Injures Dozens In Afghanistan

Nearly 30 people injured due to heavy snowfall in Afghanistan.

Kabul:

Widespread heavy snowfall across several provinces in Afghanistan over the past three days has resulted in the tragic loss of 15 lives and injuries to nearly 30 individuals, TOLOnews reported.

Additionally, statistics obtained from Balkh and Faryab provinces by TOLOnews indicate a devastating impact on livestock, with nearly ten thousand animals perishing due to the recent snowfalls.

Abdul Qadir, a resident of Sar-e-Pul, expressed the prevailing anxiety among the population, stating, “The snow is ongoing and very heavy, and people are anxious as their livestock have suffered losses, many roads are blocked, and there is hardly any movement.”

Another resident, Amanullah, emphasised the urgent need for government assistance, especially for those affected by road blockages and the plight of hungry livestock.

In response to the crisis, Afghanistan has announced the formation of a committee comprising various ministries to address the damages, particularly to livestock owners. The authorities have allocated fifty million Afghanis to support livestock owners in the provinces of Balkh, Jawzjan, Badghis, Faryab, and Herat.

Misbahuddin Mustaeen, the Taliban-appointed spokesperson for the Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation, and Livestock, highlighted the swift response of committees formed in all provinces. These committees are actively working to open blocked roads, distribute food and fodder to affected communities, and rescue those stranded in the aftermath of the heavy snowfall.

Erfanullah Sharafzoi, spokesperson for the Afghan Red Crescent Society, said that winter service workers have already provided assistance in provinces such as Badghis, Ghor, Farah, Kandahar, Helmand, Jawzjan, and Nuristan, reaching individuals affected by the recent snowfalls.

The severe snowfall has resulted in the closure of key transportation routes, including the Salang Pass and access to various provinces such as Ghor, Badghis, Ghazni, Herat, and Bamyan. Mohammad Ashraf Haqshenas, spokesperson for the Ministry of Public Works, confirmed the temporary blockage of these routes due to the heavy snowfall over the past two days.

Esmatullah Muradi, spokesperson for the provincial governor of Faryab, reported that heavy snowfall in the province led to road closures in most districts, leaving residents in remote areas stranded. Tragically, one person in the Chahar Sada district on the Turkmenistan border lost their life, TOLOnews reported.
